EPA: “This is a Stick Up!” and Amtrak is a Zombie Rip-Off
by William Warren: EPA robbing Oil & Gas Companies of their profits and jobs via regulations.
Don’t Subsidize Amtrak, Just Let the Free Market Work!
U.S. taxpayers are forced to fork over more than a billion and a half dollars a year to subsidize Amtrak which would not exist under its current model otherwise. Propping up this zombie business is ludicrous, especially in a time of fiscal dire straits.
By Adam Bitely: As the new Republican Congress debates where it will cut back spending, Amtrak is one place they could start with. If there is any example of ludicrous, wasteful government spending, Amtrak is definitely the place to look at.
To begin with, Amtrak receives most of its operational funding from the taxpayers. Cutting the subsidy and government grants to Amtrak would save over a billion dollars a year. Of course, ending a subsidy is more simply said than done.
Amtrak operates on a grotesquely large government subsidy. How much money does the Congress give to Amtrak from the taxpayers? $1.563 billion a year — a considerable sum. And when you consider that Amtrak had $2.4 billion in revenues in 2009, it is clear that Amtrak relies solely on these subsidies and grants to operate under its current design. . . . [Full Story]

You can eliminate AMTRAK subsidies AFTER you eliminate subsidies for airlines, shipping, automobiles, and trucks.
Typical irrational conservative ideology. The truth? ALL forms of public transpotation are subsidized, from airlines tio sidewalks.
Interesting Jim!
Sidewalks are not voted on and paid for out of the Federal Treasury. The are determined The people of a community decide when, where and how to fund their sidewalks. Big Federal Government is not a community.
For the most part highways have been prior to the Eisenhower Interstate System, which was created under the platform of supporting "National Defense," are funded by each state via a toll systems or state gasoline taxes in the states. Highways for the "most part" are not a Federal responsibility. However, the collection of Federal taxes on gasoline and diesel was established to help fund federal designated highways even though they are not legally owned or controlled by the Federal government.
Trains have been principally private enterprises except for land set aside through the territories by the Federal government.
The issue with Amtrak is it is a failed love affair with government subsidized program when in fact there are not enough people wishing to pay to ride Amtrak. Why should taxpayers are forced to fork over more than a billion and a half dollars a year to subsidize Amtrak which would not otherwise exist under its current model?
Since you seem to be willing to attack conservatives using a platitude, I will respond in kind -- your comment is based on typical irrational liberal ideology. The truth, liberals believe other people's money should pay for their failed ideas and wasteful programs.
