Government Shutdown Avoided - Spending Continues in Looneyville
Joint Statement from Speaker Boehner & Senate Majority Leader Reid on Bipartisan Agreement To Cut Spending, Keep Government Open
WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) tonight released the following statement: “We have agreed to an historic amount of cuts for the remainder of this fiscal year, as well as a short-term bridge that will give us time to avoid a shutdown while we get that agreement through both houses and to the President. We will cut $78.5 billion below the President’s 2011 budget proposal, and we have reached an agreement on the policy riders. In the meantime, we will pass a short-term resolution to keep the government running through Thursday. That short-term bridge will cut the first $2 billion of the total savings.”
Editor's Note: While the GOP secured cuts $78.5 billion in reductions / spending, they lost any further leverage this year for more cuts via the CR process. The also gave up their positions in the revised CR to defund Obamacare implementation this year and to defund Planned Parenthood Abortion clinics. However, Harry Reid had to agree that the Dems would allow up or down votes in the US Senate on two separate House bills regarding defunding Planned Parenthood and defunding the implementation of Obamacare (the Federal Healthcare Law) for the remainder of the year. Note, Obamacare has been determined to be unconstitutional.
There may also be other bills the Senate must vote on addressing the policy riders that were removed from the Continuing Resolution. We will learn more tomorrow or in the next few days other details of their agreement. The House may now complete without interference their FY 2012 Budget proposal and the Senate Democrat leaders allow it to be debated before the Fiscal Year runs out at the end of September 2011. In summary, even though we have gained cuts, the government get to continue to waste money and collect our taxes, both the military and others will receive their pay or government retirements and benefits, the National museums, zoos and Parks remain open and the Washington, D.C Cherry Blossom Parade marches tomorrow. Spending Continues in Looneyville!

FED UP with LOONEY TUNE TIME!
Thank you Bill again and again and again!
Debbie - Thank you! -- Also for the Thank you which keeps me motivated :)
I was afraid Boehner was not strong enough to stand his ground. What are they going to do when they start working on 2012. I served under Reagan and never missed getting paid through a shutdown. In 1995 they were paid. I think the President can issue an order and pay them, not issue now as they are being paid. I fear that we will have a hard time with the Democrats after this.
Byron, You make some good points. I also served under Reagan and few other POTUS in 22 yrs. Obama has our military stretched too thin and is using up our weapons which I don't expect that he will support replacing.
I believe Boehner went farther than most of his GOP House colleagues expected in securing the spending cuts and forcing Harry Reid to reverse himself and agree to an up or down vote which will identify each Senators vote prior to the 2012 election on defunding Obamacare, etc. Reid had refused to allow these votes. If Reid he is smart he will move to vote on these forward and vote early verses dragging them into next year when everyone will not the votes before the elections.
They also had to keep things on tract to pass in the House the FY2012 budget in time to give the Senate enough time to be forced to have a debate. Reid and Pelosi both liked massive CRs with no cuts verses real budgets.
I had mixed feelings as I was ready for the shutdown but didn't want the military hampered with lack of support by all the civilian support they no rely on.
We must also be reminded the Senate and White House are still controlled by Democrats, unfortunately. I believe the Speaker did all he could to fight a good fight and force the democrats to show their votes. We did not need a government shutdown in my opinion, however, I was ready and willing to accept it as long as our military and others responsible for our safety were paid. I really don't know what people expected from Boehner in his position. Until republicans control the House and Senate or White House *or both, as long as we are the minority, you know what they say . . .
Almost Unbelievable, except that all those attorney's in the Congress and Senate are Clueless about "Bottom Line" anything????
I just realized what a huge Opportunity we just missed. VERY DISAPPOINTED!
News Alert: Lucy pulls football out from sucker nice naive Charlie Brown...once again! GOP cheers, calling it a great victory.
