A Sharp Contrast: Ryan's Budget Verses The President's Budget

Paul Ryan - - Barack Obama
While President Obama’s Budget ‘All But Ignored The Most Important Long-Term Fiscal Challenge,’ Chairman Ryan’s Plan ‘Includes Broad Changes To The Tax System And $6.2 Trillion In Federal Spending Cuts’
The House Republican Budget: The ‘Most Complete Attempt So Far By Republicans To Make Good On Their Promises … To Cut Government Spending And Deficits’
“Government Spending Would Plummet By Nearly $6 Trillion Over The Coming Decade Under A Republican Plan Due To Be Unveiled On Tuesday, In A Sharp Contrast To President Barack Obama's Fiscal Plan.” (“Republican Budget Plan Envisions Sharp Cuts,” Reuters, 4/5/11)

“The Budget Has Been Prepared By Rep. Paul Ryan, A Wisconsin Republican And The New Chairman Of The House Budget Committee, And It Represents The Most Complete Attempt So Far By Republicans To Make Good On Their Promises During The 2010 Midterm Elections To Cut Government Spending And Deficits.” (“GOP Aim: Cut $4 Trillion,” The Wall Street Journal, 4/4/11)

“The Proposal Also Includes Broad Changes To The Tax System And $6.2 Trillion In Federal Spending Cuts From President Obama’s Budget Over The Next 10 Years.” (“GOP 2012: Overhauls On Entitlements And Taxes, $6.2 Trillion In Cuts Over Decade,” The Washington Post, 4/5/11)

“Republicans Say They Are Taking The Initiative On Medicaid And Medicare Because President Obama Has Done Nothing To Put The Programs On A Solid Fiscal Footing.” (“G.O.P. Blueprint Would Remake Health Policy,” The New York Times, 4/5/11)

“In His 2012 Budget, Mr. Obama Did Not Propose Significant Savings In Medicaid Or Medicare, Even Though He And Many Fiscal Experts Say The Programs Are Unsustainable In Their Current Form.” (“G.O.P. Blueprint Would Remake Health Policy,” The New York Times, 4/5/11)

NBC:“It’s Courage Because Ryan Is Seriously Addressing Entitlement Reform, Which Is Something That President Obama’s Budget Didn’t Touch At All.” (MSNBC’s “First Read,” 4/4/11)

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN, The New York Times: “Now There's A Leadership Position. He's Come Out With A Plan Which Is More Than The Democrats Can Say… Give The Man [Rep. Ryan] Credit For Putting Out A Plan When Nobody Else Would, Frankly.” (MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” 4/5/11)

DAVID BROOKS, The New York Times: “The Country Lacked That Leadership Until Today. Today, Paul Ryan, the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee, is scheduled to release the most comprehensive and most courageous budget reform proposal any of us have seen in our lifetimes. Ryan is expected to leap into the vacuum left by the president’s passivity.” (David Brooks, Op-Ed, “Moment Of Truth,” The New York Times, 4/5/11)
The President’s Budget: ‘A Remarkably Tame Response To Washington’s Fiscal Problems’ ‘It All But Ignored …The Growing Cost Of Entitlements Such As Medicare And Medicaid’
LOS ANGELES TIMES: “A Remarkably Tame Response To Washington’s Fiscal Problems… It All But Ignored The Most Important Long-Term Financial Challenge, Which Is The Growing Cost Of Entitlements Such As Medicare And Medicaid.” “President Obama's budget for fiscal year 2012 landed with a thud Monday, laying out short- and long-term tax and spending plans that disappointed lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The proposal was a remarkably tame response to Washington's fiscal problems, not the bold statement about belt-tightening that the White House had suggested was coming. Yet the biggest shortcoming is that it all but ignored the most important long-term financial challenge, which is the growing cost of entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid.” (Editorial, “Obama's Overly Tame Budget,” Los Angeles Times, 2/15/11)

THE WASHINGTON POST: “The President Punted. Having been given the chance, the cover and the push by the fiscal commission he created to take bold steps to raise revenue and curb entitlement spending, President Obama, in his fiscal 2012 budget proposal, chose instead to duck. To duck, and to mask some of the ducking with the sort of budgetary gimmicks he once derided.” (Editorial, “President Obama's Budget Kicks The Hard Choices Further Down The Road,” The Washington Post, 2/15/11)

USA TODAY: “He Whiffed.” “President Obama likes to talk about those ‘Sputnik moments’ when the nation rises to difficult challenges like the one posed by the Soviet space program in the 1950s. On Monday, he had a chance to turn his federal budget proposal into his own such moment. He whiffed. … It's becoming hard not to conclude that Obama doesn't much care about the debt threat or has decided to wait until after the 2012 elections. Either would be a shame, and economically risky.” (Editorial, “Our View: Obama's Budget Ducks Tough Choices,” USA Today, 2/15/11)

I'll say this: he is certainly smarter than both.

For a President who ran on a promise of openness & transparency, and is on TV virtually 5 days a week, he is also the most dismissive, arrogant, deceitful, lying, condescending and patronizing President we have ever had. Obama has spent more time in front of the camera talking than any President in history and still thinks that WE aren't getting HIS message. Maybe he will hear what we are saying at the ballot box in November and in 2012. We are waiting for prosperity while they socialize HC.

Hi Eric, can we talk you into running for something? It seems to be the thing to do these days for many physicians.

Stephen, I was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate against Mikulski in 2010. We are exploring a possible run against our junior US Senator, Ben Cardin (D -MD) , in 2012.

Eric, would love to talk to you sometime about it. I sent out something to a bunch of candidates today about e-maill fundraising, and I'll send it to you this afternoon. It may be useful. I worked on Christine's campaign in DE, the one she won before the high-priced "experts" came in from NY, DC, and Hollywod, & laid waste to the whole enterprise. Cardin is awful, almost as awful as Mikulski. You would need a tremendous, volunteer-based effort. Look into what Dr. Donna Campbell (emergency room physician and relentless) has done in the Austin area against Lloyd Doggett. Also, Vicky Hartzler in Mo and Renee Ellmers in NC. Renee is an RN and ran a wonderful campaign against the Dem. Vicky in MO beat Ike Skelton, a Cardin type.

Eric, you were a great candidate. We appreciated your running! As for Paul Ryan running for President: he is more like a true statesman. Have you noticed that few statesmen ever run for President?

Paul is an intellectual -- he can't help it; he's just very, very bright about issues of economics and fiscal matters that most peope avoid like the plague.

Eric, I think his days are now, we do need somebody with accounting and economic experience, the financial situation in our country is so real and serious that we have to choose and elect people who have experience in business and financing - not merely politician, being politician is not enough for challenges this country is facing!!!!!!

The problem is that a lot of the big business people, those who damaged the economy on Wall Street, or sank the US auto industry, ot who ran a health industry that excluded many people from coverage, have exactly the kind of experience we don't need. President Obama loves the CEOs of Goldman SAchs and Citibank; he should, because they gave him huge amounts of money for his campaign. Many businesses, including financial services, are tied at the hip to big government. If we just assume that one businessman or another is competent or not a crook, we might be very disappointed. I'm not suggesting we follow the Obama model and fill government with academics; I am suggesting we use people who are scrupulously honest and refuse to enrich themselves at the expense of others. To me, that's someone like Sarah Palin, who has proven herself to be one henkuva businesswoman -- and has done so without damaging others.

Yes, Steve, We all know you like Sarah Palin but we can look at and appreciate the talent that is doing something right now without using "Palin ruler." :) The team is on the filed right now and the stakes are high; looking solely for a new quarterback in 18 months is not going to help right now when we need a FY 2012 budget. The young guns are fighting the battle right now! In fact we are quite proud of our young Rep Rick Crawford calling out Sen. Harry Reid.

Bill, I don't get your point. Paul Ryan has no chance of running effectively for the presidency in 2012. Do you know that? If you don't, why? One reason is that the American people NEVER elect a Congressman to the presidency. They never elect a Congressman to the vice presidency. They never elect a person who's never held political office (e.g., Herman Cain, Donald Trump) to the presidency or the vice presidency. I think you and other conservatives should have done a helluva lot more liking of Sarah Palin, who has led the effort against Obama from Day1. Sarah Palin has been consistently courageous from Day 1. Paul Ryan's budget plan is getting a lot of attention this week, and beginning next week it will start sinking like a rock, just as the Deficit Commission's plan disappeared.

Stephan, I like Palin but I thought this group was related to Conservative Candidates not just one person. Paul Ryan deserves a look as well as Herman Cain and others. By the way the following Presidents did NOT serve as Governors or as a US Senator; List of 34% of those elected as President / Vice President were not Governors or members of the Senate:

George Washington
John Adams
James Madison - Leaders of US House
Zachary Taylor
Millard Fillmore US House
Abraham Lincoln US House
Ulysses S. Grant
James A. Garfield US House
Chester A. Arthur
William Howard Taft provisional Gov of Cuba for 1 month
Herbert Hoover
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Gerald Ford - of course not elected - US House
George H. W. Bush US House

-----------

James K. Polk was Gov of TN for 2yrs (didn't quit) but served primarily in the US House
