Perry returns to Texas, Bachmann concedes sixth finish in Iowa

By Kelly Carson & Hannah Hess | IowaPolitics.com: DES MOINES -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry will return home to reassess his campaign after a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Iowa GOP presidential caucuses, he announced Tuesday night.

"I've decided to return to Texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus and determine whether there is a path forward in this race," Perry told supporters at a vote-night gathering here. Results of the 2012 Iowa Republican Caucuses had not yet been finalized when Perry made his announcement. He stood in fifth place with 10 percent of the vote after 96.6 percent of precincts had been tallied, according to Republican Party of Iowa results.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum are in a virtual tied for the top spot.

Each had 24.6 percent of the vote with 96 percent of precincts reporting.
Fox News reports that a truck full of results from Story County is en route from Ames to Republican Party headquarters to deliver the final vote tally.

Santorum credited his hard work in all 99 counties with helping him make the final surge to the top of the polls.

Minnesota U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann conceded a sixth place finish with 5 percent of the vote late Tuesday night, but sounded optimistic about the future of her campaign. She referred to her first-place Ames Straw Poll win and thanked the people of Iowa for "launching us on the path to victory." Bachmann suggested there could be "another Michele in the White House" in 2012, referring current occupant first lady Michelle Obama.

Santorum - who else unless Perry caters to the establishment - he had been Gore's man, right? Newt is out to destroy Romney (they could support him for kicks but I doubt that).

Perry hasn't dropped yet. However, Perry has made several major mistakes. Normally, when talking. Cowboys did to be doer. politicians tend to be talkers. Unfortunately, the elitists love tearing down the practical people. Look what happened to Palin and Cain.

IMO: If Michelle Bachmann is smart, she should not endorse anyone. She has to focus on winner her Congressional seat. If Perry is looking for a potential position out side of Texas (why) and drops out, he had better keep quite until after Florida. Remember the politicians who jumped on the HUCK Train. What happened to them?
