THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: “If the federal government can't responsibly manage the money it's doling out in the name of economic stimulus, then it has no business doling out the money — period… Public investments… must be based on due diligence. Not big money politics. Not stimulus rollout timetables. Not all stimulus is considered equal.
The Arkansas Energy Office received a total of $110.8 million in ARRA funding distributed in various ways. $2.2 million of which went to the CNG vehicle conversion rebate program a central Arkansas winner in 'promoting' the use of natural gas from the Fayetteville shale play. Both businesses and individuals were eligible to receive the rebates.
As conservatives how do we understand these 'useful' local applications as 1) tolerable exceptions because they are beneficial or 2) part and parcel to a systemic problem with our 'anti-federal' system of picking winners and losers?
Is something useful and beneficial when the money does not exists, creates debt, and further encumbers our grandchildren. We can all justify but that make it right. Yes when we receive it appears good. But who decides who gets and who doesn't and who is called upon to pay the cost of the stimulus even when it came to Arkansas.
Is it anymore egregious if our 'conservative' representatives are on the receiving end of these debt creating federal gifts? Is it any more disappointing if our leaders are preaching the message of conservatism and yet line up to the public trough?
How can we expect a constitutional amendment to fix the ills of our nation if the very legislators we trust with our vote to limit spending are the first to benefit from the very spending they publicly castigate?
How long do we continue to support political welfare just to beat the other side?
How long do we look the other way because we have invested all of our energy in a party and its players?
How effective can the TEA party continue to be if the closet partners we have don't adhere to the fundamental tenants of fiscal conservatism and personal responsibility?
How long before we lose our state and our country?
