‘Gun Appreciation Day’ - Jan 19, 2013
This morning the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep & Bear Arms placed a full page ad in the Washington Times announcing Gun Appreciation Day and a number of articles have already been published about our event.
The Washington Times also reported today:
A collection of conservative and gun rights groups are joining together for a “Gun Appreciation Day” on Jan. 19, two days before President Obama’s second inauguration.
The group is emulating the anti-gay marriage activists who made the Christian fast food chain Chick-fil-A into a national conservative cause with “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”
The group is asking supporters to turn out in droves at gun stores, gun counters, gun shows, and gun ranges to protest what they see as government overreach in the wake of the Sandy Hook elementary school shootings.
Obama and Democrats are pushing for the reinstatement of an assault weapons ban. A White House working group is also considering broader measures to mandate universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors.
“We need to ban politicians who assault our rights, not firearms that are used thousands of times a day to protect lives and property from criminal attack,” said Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation.
The groups currently involved in effort are: Second Amendment Foundation, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Special Operations Speaks, Revolution PAC, Citizens and Country, Social Security Institute, Committee to Draft Judge Andrew Napolitano, Conservative Action Alerts, Women Warriors PAC, Conservative Action Fund, and Political Media, Inc. Former Conservative Presidential Candidate Gary Bauer said today that the "Second Amendment Is In Obama's Crosshairs."When it comes to other aspects of the left's radical agenda, it is increasingly obvious that Second Amendment rights are in Obama's crosshairs. Sales at gun stores across the country are soaring. Gun manufacturers say they will need six months to fill orders. Background checks that would normally be completed in minutes are now taking days due to the sheer volume. This "panic buying" isn't being driven by hunters and NRA members. Many Americans are fearful that this administration is about to limit their Second Amendment rights.
By the way, the Second Amendment isn't really about hunting or sports shooting. Here's a history lesson for the day: The first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired at the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Why? The British troops were attempting to seize an arms depot and gunpowder.
Our Founding Fathers had firsthand experience with a dictatorial government that moved first to disarm its own citizens, a pattern that has been repeated throughout history. The Second Amendment was written to preserve our liberty.
But in the wake of the Newtown shootings, congressional liberals are planning a broad attack on the Second Amendment. Legislation reportedly being drafted by Sen. Dianne Feinstein and others, including Vice President Biden's commission, goes far beyond specific items like assault weapons or high-capacity magazines. In fact, it's even starting to unnerve some Democrats on Capitol Hill. The Gun Appreciation Day website has some very cool memes that you can share (note the one used above) in articles, on FaceBook and other social networks. And, if you have made a cool one, they appreciate your submit it to their website for us by others.
