Some Sobering Statistics

According to OMB, the average federal worker makes an annual salary of $76,353. Given the million-dollar price tag of President Obama’s recent golf trip with Tiger Woods, this amount would have been enough to prevent what is likely to be two weeks of furlough for 341 federal workers. ARRA News Service - In discussing the Sequester, President Obama said that Republicans are “cutting vital services for children” in order to “benefit the well-off and well-connected.” U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, replied to that charge:


“While the White House operatives may think this attack is clever, it betrays an astonishing elitism: the federal government is perfect and requires no reform…our massive federal government is, right now, creating poverty and hurting families. Look at cities like Baltimore, Chicago, and Detroit. Raising taxes—instead of reforming government—denies struggling Americans the help they need. There is nothing just or virtuous about protecting a stale welfare state that is failing the people it is supposed to help. President Obama is defending the bureaucracy at the expense of the people.”

Children living in single-parent homes

• 71 percent in Detroit
• 73 percent in Cleveland
• 64 percent in Washington, DC

Chicago crime statistics for 2011 (FBI)

• 609 murders and nonnegligent manslaughters
• 18,100 robberies
• 56,203 burglaries
• 27,138 vehicle thefts

Illinois’ 1^st, 2^nd, 4^th, and 7^th congressional district

• 58.5 percent of households with children under 18 using SNAP

Michigan’s 13^th congressional district food stamp usage (September 2011 USDA report)

• 59,942 households using SNAP
• 53.2 percent of households with children under 18 using SNAP
• 62.3 percent live below the poverty level
