McConnell Speaks on 13th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks
Today in Washington, D.C. Sept 11, 2014:
This morning, following a moment of silence to remember those killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell spoke on the Senate floor on the 13th anniversary of those attacks: "Yesterday I joined congressional leaders in awarding three congressional gold medals to the memory of the thousands of men and women who perished so tragically on this day, 13 years ago. Every American that morning bore witness to terrible tragedy and suffering. But that wasn’t all we witnessed. We also saw incredible acts of bravery, and compassion, and heroism. We saw it in a great city, we saw it on the edge of a capital, and we heard about it high above the clouds."
“The sacrifices of those heroes of 9/11 inspired us then, and they inspire us now. “The memory of every man and women who perished so tragically that day continues to serve as a unifying force for our nation. And we will never stop honoring them.”
President Obama delivered the following remarks at the White House on Sept. 10 outlining his strategy to defeat Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria..
The Senate reconvened at 9:30 AM today and began with a moment of silence in tribute to the Americans’ whose lives were taken in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The Senate then resumed post-cloture consideration of the motion to proceed to S. 2199, Democrats’ so-called “Paycheck Fairness Act,” (S. 2199), which would not actually do anything to address compensation for women. Yesterday, the Senate voted 73-25 upon reconsideration to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to S. 2199, Paycheck Fairness Act by Paycheck Fairness Act Voice Vote
At 1:45 PM today, Democrats failed to get 60 votes to advance their Democrats’ radical constitutional amendment that would gut the core political speech protections of the First Amendment. S. J. Res. 19 failed a cloture vote by a tally of 54-42. All 54 YEA votes were by Democrat Senators including Democrats with close races. For Example Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas vote yes supporting Harry Reid efforts to amend the constitution to limit free speech. All No votes were by Republican Senators.
Following that vote, the Senate will hold voice votes on the nominations of John Hoover to be Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Joseph Nimmich to be Deputy Administrator of FEMA. Also scheduled for voice votes are nominees to be the NASA CFO, the Administrator for Federal Procurement Policy, and three members of the board of directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The House reconvened at 9:00 AM today. The adjourned at 3:52 PM. They are scheduled to return at 12 PM on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement after bipartisan House passage of H.R. 3522, the Employee Health Care Protection Act, which would allow Americans in the group insurance market to keep or choose the plans they like: “In this tough economy, hardworking families need all the peace of mind they can get, and by helping them keep the plan they like, Bill Cassidy’s bill does just that. It will also mean getting more people back to work, lowering costs at home, and restoring opportunity. Of course, to protect our workers from all of ObamaCare’s broken promises, we need to repeal this law and replace it with solutions that lower costs and protect jobs. For now, given that Senate Democrats promised Americans early and often that they would be able to keep their plans, we hope they will not consign this bill to the same fate as so many of our jobs bills.” - See more at: http://www.speaker.gov/press-release/helping-families-keep-their-plan-peace-mind#sthash.9czEvpxW.dpuf
