50,000 People To Lose Current Health Coverage | Idaho School District Slashes Employee Hours Due To Obamacare Mandates
The Hill writes today “Thousands of Americans will see their health plans cancelled before the November elections in a development that could boost critics of ObamaCare. The Morning Consult, a Washington-based policy publication, reported that nearly 50,000 people will lose their current health coverage in the coming weeks. The figure encompasses cancellations announced by insurance departments and providers in Kentucky, Alaska, Tennessee, New Mexico, North Carolina, Maine and Colorado.”
According to Morning Consult, “In Kentucky, the Department of Insurance told Morning Consult that nearly 14,000 people, mostly enrolled in plans from Humana, will have been notified of a plan cancellation by October 1. . . . About 800 Alaskans will receive similar letters by October 1, according to a report from the Associated Press, potentially creating a challenge for Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Begich, who is also facing a tough reelection. The number of cancellations vary significantly from state to state. In Tennessee, approximately 2,000 people will receive notices this month from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee informing them that their plans are being discontinued.
“In New Mexico, the Albuquerque Journal reports that about 30,000 people in New Mexico will have plans that don’t fully comply with the ACA discontinued at the end of this year. North Carolina’s Department of Insurance has only been notified of 75 people losing plans, but said that number could be higher because insurers do not have to tell them when they end coverage. In Maine, approximately 40 people will be effected by the transitional plan cancellations, according to the Bureau of Insurance. . . . In Colorado, just over 1,700 people were informed earlier this year that their plans would be ending in June.”
While many Americans continue to lose their health plans, despite Democrats’ repeated promises that that would not happen, others continue to suffer from lost hours at work because of other Obamacare regulations and mandates.
In Twin Falls, Idaho, the Times-News reports, “The Twin Falls School District has slashed scores of employees' hours amid fears of skyrocketing health-care costs under the Affordable Care Act. . . . The Twin Falls School Board approved the move to slash hours for more than 150 non-professional, or classified, staff after administrators said maintaining work hours would cost the district $1 million. The board moved to cut the weekly hours of food service employees, teaching aides and other non-professionals to 27.5, down from 30 to 34 hours. Those workers' annual pay thus was cut by $535 to $2,100. But administrators said the move was necessary to keep cash flowing into the classroom.
“‘It's an unintended consequence of the health care reform act,’ district Human Resources Director Shannon Swafford said Tuesday . . . . Fear of the looming mandate led the district to rework how it schedules substitute teachers and other staff who could break the 30-hour threshold, Swafford said. It also means some aides no longer can coach sports teams. The shift drove several employees to find other jobs, but the exact number wasn't available.”
Again, these were easily foreseeable consequences of the regulations and mandates created by Obamacare that Republicans warned about, only to have Democrat claims like, President Obama's remark “If you like your current plan, you will be able to keep it.” This unpopular law needs to be repealed and replaced.
