$56 Million In Questionable Spending At The NEH
Ann Louise Wilcox, Bankrupting America: Last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the unemployment situation summary for October. In October, the national unemployment rate fell to 5.8 percent, down from 5.9 percent in September. While the economy added more than 200,000 jobs, October wages were still stagnant, suggesting individuals are not feeling the effects of an improving economy. Read on for the top stories for the week:
“Unemployment Is Down, But Wages Aren’t Up.” According to The Huffington Post, “Friday delivered another solid-if-not-amazing jobs report. Unfortunately, the "not-amazing" part continues to involve your paycheck. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the U.S. economy added 214,000 jobs in October and that unemployment fell a tenth of a percentage point to 5.8 percent. This is the ninth straight month in which employers added 200,000 jobs or more, the Financial Times' Eric Platt pointed out. The last such streak of that length happened in 1993-1995 and lasted 19 months.” However, wage gains haven’t accelerated.
ELECTION RESULTS: GOP Secured Control Of The Senate, Retained Control Of The House. According to The Wall Street Journal, “Republicans took control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, a result that transforms the political dynamic in Washington and gives the GOP new power over President Barack Obama’s final two years in the White House. Republicans won Senate seats from West Virginia to Colorado and beyond to assemble a majority of at least 52 seats, expanded their margin in the House—possibly to levels not seen in decades—and won key governor races. The sweep left Democrats without a majority in either chamber for the first time since 2006.”
$56 Million In Questionable Spending At The NEH. On October 23, The Washington Times reported on several questionable grants awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). During 2014, the NEH awarded grants for 570 projects, worth $56 million in taxpayer funds. Opponents of the NEH suggest the endowment is a poor use of taxpayer funds and should be eliminated. Some of the awards included a $37,000 grant to study anti-nuclear protest music, as well as a $50,000 grant to study the role of alcohol in India.
$9 Trillion Deficit From 2014 To 2024. Last week, the Mercatus Center released a report breaking down federal spending over the next decade. According to the report, the data was compiled from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and highlighted the projected outlays vs. revenues for fiscal years 2014-2024. According to the Mercatus Center, “If left untouched, the federal budget could one day become merely a transfer mechanism for entitlement programs and a debt machine that incurs higher and higher interest payments, so discretionary programs of the sort Americans are accustomed to will be harder to continue.” Check out the chart below, which highlights federal spending and revenue projections for 2013 - 2024:
