Fear Legislatures Won't Vote Will Of The People
by Dan Cook, Letter to Editor: As a common-sense, conservative-minded citizen, I was heartened by the overwhelming Republican victory wave in this year's mid-term elections.
Having said that, I am also a citizen who believes in our representative democracy, which means that our elected officials are to vote the majority opinion of their constituents' views and not those of their own or those made after political deals with their legislative colleagues.
I am already hearing rumblings that some of these newly elected state and national Republican conservatives are beginning to wimp out on the hard stands they took prior to their election night wins.
These hard fought victories were accomplished by the tireless work of grassroots Americans who took the fight door to door, in letters to the editor and through the Internet to educate voters on the differences between failed liberal policies and fresh conservative views on the problems facing our state and nation.
If these new lawmakers turn against the will of the people and either promote or continue the policies they railed against in their political campaigns, then they are worse than the people they defeated. If they do not vote the will of the people, the people themselves need to nip it in the bud quickly to remind these elected officials where the real power lies, We The People.
If some of these new Republicans, who now have control of both the state of Arkansas Legislature and the U.S. Congress, begin to talk conciliation with the very people they said were taking us down the road to ruination, then the mandate given by the people on Nov. 4 doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Fresh common-sense, conservative ideas are needed to get our country kick-started again, not the stale policies of the past several years that have driven us to bankruptcy and made the United States the laughing stock of the world.
Heed the will of the people. The voting public has finally woken up, and they will not be content with wishy-washy legislators who thumb their noses at the very people who put them in power.
