Congress Stop the FCC’s Obama-Ordered Regulatory Attack on the Internet
“Congress must use its powers and act immediately to stop President Obama’s radical ‘public utility’ Internet plan—or completely shut the FCC, a supposedly independent agency that has embarrassingly become an appendage of White House political staff,” said Phil Kerpen, president of American Commitment. “Despite November’s landslide election results rejecting larger and more intrusive government, President Obama moved even further to the Left and openly demanded that the FCC take the most radical action imaginable: reducing the Internet to a ‘public utility,’ imposing sweeping new taxes and destroying private investment, competition, and innovation while putting bureaucrats firmly in control.”
“Congress must not allow President Obama to bully the FCC into seizing control over the Internet. Even the New York Times had to acknowledge that President Obama issued a ‘surprising public admonition to an independent agency.’ We urge Americans to support our petition to block this rogue action or shut down the FCC entirely.”

American Commitment delivered 808,363 citizen comments opposing any regulation of the Internet to the FCC. The Sunlight Foundation later confirmed in a report that these comments represented the majority of all public comments in the FCC’s reply-comment period.

FCC was going to ignore facts, law, and economics in order to reverse two decades of successful free-market Internet policy because Obama told them to.
Today, the Wall Street Journal confirmed it:
The president’s words swept aside more than a decade of light-touch regulation of the Internet and months of work by Mr. Wheeler toward a compromise...
The prod from Mr. Obama came after an unusual, secretive effort inside the White House...
Officials told participants not to discuss the process openly...
The FCC will issue an order on February 26 to reduce the Internet to a heavily-taxed, heavily-regulated public utility. Not because they think that's a good idea. They don't. But because the White House steamrolled them for political reasons.
And here's the craziest part, from the same WSJ story:
While Obama administration officials were warming to the idea of calling for tougher rules, it took the November elections to sway Mr. Obama into action.
After Republicans gained their Senate majority, Mr. Obama took a number of actions to go around Congress, including a unilateral move to ease immigration rules.
Senior aides also began looking for issues that would help define the president’s legacy. Net neutrality seemed like a good fit.
Got that? The American people demanded smaller government in a historic landslide -- and that convinced Obama to seize control of the FCC and regulate the Internet, imposing sweeping new taxes and destroying private investment, competition, and innovation.
What is the point of expert agencies like the FCC if their opinions are rendered irrelevant on political whim?
And what is the point of a Republican Congress if they can't step up and stop such a disgusting abuse of power?
The bottom line: Congress must act immediately to stop President Obama’s radical ‘public utility’ Internet plan—or completely shut down the FCC, a supposedly independent agency that has embarrassingly become an appendage of White House political staff.
