Another Chance For Dems To Listen To Americans & Vote On #BadIranDeal
Today in Washington, D.C. - Sept. 15, 2015 :
The House will reconvene proforma at 3 PM EST today and then adjourn. They will reconvene tomorrow at 12 PM EST p.m. on Sept 16, 2015.
The Senate reconvened at 1 PM EST today and resumed consideration of H.J. Res. 61, the vehicle for the resolution of disapproval of the Iran deal.
At 6 PM EST, the Senate will vote again on cloture on the McConnell substitute amendment to H.J. Res. 61, which is the resolution of disapproval. Democrats will have the opportunity to drop their partisan protection of the president and let the Senate have an up-or-down vote on the resolution of disapproval.
AP writes today, “Senate Republicans will try a second time on Tuesday to move ahead on a resolution rejecting the Iran nuclear deal, and the outcome is expected to be the same: Democrats are poised to block the measure . . . . Last week, Senate Democrats blocked GOP attempts to get a disapproval resolution to Obama's desk . . . .”
Democrats have an opportunity today to drop their filibuster and allow the Senate to vote directly on the resolution of disapproval. As Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week, “It’s telling that Democrats would go to such extreme lengths to prevent President Obama from even having to consider legislation on this issue. If the president is so proud of this deal, then he shouldn’t be afraid. He should wield his veto pen with pride and explain his rationale to the American people.”
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) said to Roll Call, “There’ll be … other opportunities for folks to change their minds [this] week, hopefully after they hear from their constituents.”
Today, in Michel Gerson's Washington Post column, he runs down the behavior of the Iranian regime just since the Obama administration signed off on this deal. These are all things Americans have noticed, but will Democrats take heed of them as they vote today?
Gerson writes, “Since the Iran nuclear deal was announced in mid-July, the world has been treated to an unusual historic spectacle. As President Obama was busy twisting congressional arms to prevent repudiation of the agreement, the Iranian regime has been systematically humiliating him.
“Almost immediately, bulldozers began sanitizing the Parchin nuclear complex, where Iran is suspected to have researched the weaponization of nuclear technology — a final taunt to mark the erasure of the United States’ ‘red line’ demand that Iran account for the ‘possible military dimensions’ of its nuclear program. Iran’s military and Revolutionary Guard Corps leaders still publicly dispute there will be any inspections of military facilities.
“Ten days after the deal was announced, Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani flew to Moscow (in defiance of a U.N. travel ban) to meet with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and President Vladimir Putin. In short order, Iranian and Russian military forces began arriving in Syria, apparently to prop up the faltering regime of President Bashar al-Assad. . . .
“The Iranian military unveiled a new generation of surface-to-surface ballistic missiles. And Iranian leaders continue to deny the legitimacy of all U.N. Security Council restrictions on the importation of weapons. ‘We will sell and buy weapons whenever and wherever we deem it necessary,’ President Hassan Rouhani has said. ‘We will not wait for permission from anyone or any resolution.’
“Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s Twitter feed is a stream of provocative trolling, promising the end of Israel, posting an image that appears to be the silhouette of Obama with a gun to his head and threatening that in any military confrontation ‘the one who will emerge loser will be the aggressive and criminal U.S.’ . . . .
“This is bound to be one of the reasons that a clear majority of Americans and a majority of the House and Senate oppose the Iranian nuclear deal — because Iran has done everything possible to rub America’s face in Obama’s concessions. Obama was left to save the deal through a crude and partisan appeal.”
Americans have obviously been paying attention. As Pew noted last week, “public support for the deal has declined” since July. Only 21% approved of the agreement in the Pew poll.
Speaking on the Senate floor today, Leader McConnell had some questions for his fellow senators. He asked: “Do Senators think it’s right for the world’s leading sponsor of terror to be able to maintain an American-recognized nuclear program? Do Senators think it’s right that this deal would effectively subsidize Hezbollah, Hamas, and Bashar al-Assad by channeling billions of dollars to their benefactors in Tehran? Do Senators approve of a deal that would leave Iran with an enrichment capability, just as the Iranian leadership is again calling for Israel’s destruction — and praying for ours?”
He explained, “Many Democratic colleagues — including the top Democrats on the foreign affairs committees in both houses of Congress, among the most familiar with the President’s deal with Iran — have already come out in opposition.
“A strong, bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted to reject the deal. A strong, bipartisan majority of the Senate would vote to reject the deal too.
“If only Democrat Senators would stop blocking the American people from even having a final vote on one of the most consequential foreign policy issues of our age.
“Democrat Senators will have the chance to vote on behalf of their constituents later today. . . . Let’s stand up for the people who represent. Let’s allow them a vote on one of the most consequential foreign policy issues of our age.”
