Tightening Screws On Democrats & #Bad Iran Deal - Iran Must Recognise Israel & Release American Prisoners
Today in Washington, D.C. - Sept. 16, 2015:
The House reconvened at Noon today. Expect a lot of routine administrative land and federal building bills today.
The House Oversight and Reform Committee will hold oversight hearing on Sept 15, 2015 on EPA Animas River toxic spill.
The Senate reconvened at 10 AM today. Following an hour of morning business, the Senate and resumed consideration of H.J. Res. 61, the vehicle for the resolution of disapproval of the Iran deal.
The Senate recessed between 12:30 and 2:15 PM.
Last night, Democrats had a chance to end their filibuster and allow an up-or-down vote on the resolution disapproving of the president’s Iran deal. Instead they doubled down and 42 Democrats again filibustered the resolution.
Following that vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate would then vote on an amendment tying sanctions relief for Iran to recognition of Israel and a release of American prisoners. Will Democrats vote this down too?
Given the opportunity to vote with the prevailing view with the American public and oppose the president’s deal with Iran, Senate Democrats chose instead to continue their blockade of an up-or-down vote on a resolution of disapproval.
Disgusted with Democrats’ obstruction, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell lambasted their tactics and announced a new vote. “Democratic leaders are determined to do anything they can to prevent that vote from happening, because Democrats know the deal is indefensible on the merits. . . . Democrats seem to think they can end the discussion by blocking an up-or-down vote, then turn around and pretend they care deeply about Israel and human rights.
The ARRA News Service reported today, " Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that if Democrats continue to filibuster, he will offer a new amendment on the President’s deal with Iran. This one will say that the President can’t go forward with the windfall of sanctions relief to Iran unless or until the Iranian regime releases American prisoners held in Iran AND Iran recognizes Israel as a state. You’ll recall that the President’s deal-partner believes that America’s ally, Israel, should be wiped off the map.
If Democrats don’t want to vote on whether or not to approve the President’s deal with Iran, they’ll have the opportunity to vote on whether or not American prisoners should be released and Israel recognized as a state before billions of dollars are released to the Iranian regime." . . .
Politico writes, “Mitch McConnell is looking for payback.
The Hill describes the move as “forc[ing] Democrats to walk the line on the Iran nuclear agreement, teeing up a vote on a contentious amendment on the deal.”
Another Politico piece adds, “McConnell is still tightening the screws on Democrats, who have repeatedly balked at aggressive Iran legislation when McConnell has sought to hold votes on new sanctions. As payback for Democrats’ second filibuster, he will make them take votes that the GOP can easily exploit by forcing them into confronting the hot-button issues of Israel and Americans held overseas. And McConnell says he will not allow votes on any Democratic legislation dealing with Iran until it has the support of 67 total senators, the number needed to override a veto.
“That’s bad news for Democrats who want to immediately move toward getting tough with Iran as it prepares to engage economically with Europe and enter a long-term agreement with global powers. . . . And McConnell believes by hammering home the point again on Tuesday he is making the partisan contrast between the two parties even brighter for voters in 2016. ‘Not a single Republican in the House or Senate voted for it. My view is it’s one of those rare and defining issues with a significant shelf life and will be a big issue in next year’s campaign,’ McConnell said.”
‘I think accountability is really important,’ Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn told reporters Tuesday. ‘I know they’re trying to say that it’s all over with, there’s nothing to see here, move on down the road, but this is the most serious national security vote we will have had at least since 2002 on the Authorization for the Use of Military Force, maybe even more [serious] since it involves nuclear weapons and a nuclear-arms race in the Middle East. So this is very important. And the idea that they can just brush this under the rug and move on from here — I think they underestimate the consequences of this both from a national security perspective and a political perspective of them owning this whole issue on a partisan basis.’”
