Ad Praises Critical First Amendment Protections to Stop IRS Political Targeting in 2016
Phil Kerpen |
The ad praises Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Rep. Peter Roskam, Senator Rob Portman, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for their commitment to defending the First Amendment. Their recently enacted reform package bans the IRS from trying to assess gift tax on contributions to nonprofit organizations, which was infamously attempted against conservative donors to chill free speech. It also prohibits IRS employees from using private emails, creates a mechanism for nonprofit organizations to challenge IRS determinations in court so they cannot be held indefinitely in limbo, and enacts a provision requiring any IRS employee engaged in political targeting to be fired. The IRS is also prohibited from enacting regulations to limit political speech by nonprofit groups.
The IRS violated rights to free speech and association, using political intimidation to silence conservatives and tilt the 2012 election. Now this rogue agency has been brought to heel with crucial reforms that will protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans so that we can promote free markets, Constitutionalism, and our values in 2016 and in the years ahead.
The 60-second ad, titled “Thank You For Standing Up For Free Speech” opens with a montage of Obama victories expanding the size and scope of government as liberals sought to fundamentally transform America.
Narrator: “An ever-expanding government looked to control more and more of our lives. Patriots fought back. So the IRS tried to silence them. And they threatened to do it again in 2016.”
The ad then transitions to the conservative IRS reform package that will protect the First Amendment. “But, thanks to these leaders, free speech won a big victory.” The ad concludes with a series of clips of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Rep. Peter Roskam, Senator Rob Portman, and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan defending free speech:
McConnell: “The free exchange of ideas and the ability to criticize our government are necessary for our democracy to survive”
Roskam: “The IRS ought not be manipulating and intimidating and so forth. So Mr. Speaker what this does is, it makes sure that the IRS is boxed in.”
Portman: “I said, you’re not going to get anymore funding until you regain some element of trust in this agency”
Ryan: “They turned the IRS into a political weapon in 2012 and we’re not going to let them turn the IRS into a political weapon again.”
The narrator concludes “Let’s thank these leaders for protecting free speech and standing up to Obama’s IRS.”
