House Passes Two Bills to Help New VA Secretary Improve Care for Veterans

ARRA News Service: This week, the House passed the following veterans bills:

H.R. 1367, (House Vote 412 - 0).  H.R. 1367 improves the authority of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to hire and retain physicians and other employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and for other purposes.

H.R. 1259, the VA Accountability First Act of 2017 (House Vote 237-178).  H.R. 1259 would give the VA Secretary increased authority to remove, demote, or suspend any VA employee for poor performance or misconduct.

Following passage of H.R. 1367 and H.R. 1259, Congressman French Hill (AR-02) stated:“We in the House remain committed to making VA a place that employs the best and brightest and those that take pride in working on behalf of our veterans. H.R. 1367 will give the secretary the ability to recruit the personnel needed to provide top-notch, quality care, and the VA Accountability First Act will ensure that those working at the department fulfill their responsibilities in a way that does right by our veterans and by our taxpayers. I hope the Senate will work with the House to pass both of these bills, so that the president can sign them into law and VA can open a new chapter of increased accountability and quality customer service and care.”
