Senate Calls on President Trump To Move US Embassy to Jerusalem
‘In honor of this significant anniversary for our close ally, many Senators from both sides of the aisle are joining together in a resolution to mark the occasion today. While we know that Israel continues to face a number of threats, bipartisan passage of this resolution will serve as yet another indication of the United States’ commitment to standing by our Israeli friends.’
ARRA News Service: Earlier today, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made the following remarks today on the Senate floor regarding a bipartisan resolution that will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reunification of the city of Jerusalem:“This week marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Six-Day War. Confronted by the massing of Arab Armies and the closing of the Tiran straits, Israel responded and, in a fight for survival, ultimately prevailed. As a result, the city of Jerusalem was finally reunified after years of division. The reunification of the city allowed for people of all faiths to worship and to access the respective holy sites throughout Jerusalem.
“In honor of this significant anniversary for our close ally, many Senators from both sides of the aisle — including the Democratic Leader and myself — are joining together in a resolution to mark the occasion today. While we know that Israel continues to face a number of threats, bipartisan passage of this resolution will serve as yet another indication of the United States’ commitment to standing by our Israeli friends. I look forward to supporting it later this afternoon, and working to strengthen our relationship with the nation in the years to come.” The Senate then passed (90 to 0) a resolution calling on President Trump to "abide by" provision of a 1995 law moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as part of the bipartisan resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, which followed the Six Day War in 1967.
The 1995 law called for the president to move the embassy to Jerusalem by May 31, 1999, or else issue a waiver every six months. PUBLIC LAW 104 - 45 - JERUSALEM EMBASSY ACT OF 1995 was passed by a vote of 93-5 in the Senate and 374–37 in the House. Since passage, the law has never been implemented, because of opposition from Presidents who view it as a Congressional infringement on the executive branch's constitutional authority over foreign policy; they have consistently claimed the presidential waiver on national security interests.
The act asserted that every country has a right to designate the capital of its choice, and that Israel has designated Jerusalem. The act notes that "the city of Jerusalem is the seat of Israel's President, Parliament, and Supreme Court, and the site of numerous government ministries and social and cultural institutions." Jerusalem is defined as the spiritual center of Judaism. Furthermore, it stipulates that since the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, religious freedom has been guaranteed to all.
It also stated that "Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel; and the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999". Although the Senate and House votes preceded visits by then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert to Washington to celebrate the 3000th anniversary of King David's declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jews little to no progress has been achieved in the physical relocation of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem to date.
