Arkansas Government Spending Problem Worse Than First Thought
by Conduit for Action: Back in June (2017) Conduit for Action shared an article “A Solution to Arkansas’ Government Spending Problem” highlighting the recent out of control spending by Arkansas state government. You can see that article reprinted below. This week Jeremy Horpedahl and Jacob Bundrick with the Arkansas Center for Research and Economics (ACRE) put out a new research report diving further into the Arkansas state spending numbers. The problem appears even worse than we thought!

Some of the takeaways from the report include:
- On average, Arkansas spends over 59% MORE than its competitor states at around $7,674 per capita while competitor states spend on average $4,815 per capita.
- Welfare (mostly Medicaid), public pensions and public benefits, and education are the leading forces behind the unsustainable spending growth.
- Since 1951, Arkansas government spending increased around 800% in per capita, inflation-adjusted terms..
- Unfunded public pension liabilities of more than $20 Billion for the state..
- Targeted Incentives (Corporate Welfare) cost the state in 2013 ALONE more than $128.56 million, or $74 per capita.
- From 2008 – 2015, the Governor’s Quick Action Closing Fund spent more than $108 Million on corporate welfare projects selected at the Governor’s discretion.
