Criminal Trial of U.S. Senator Menendez Starts In Three Weeks
Sen. Robert (Bob) Menendez Trial starts in 3 weeks. |
But despite the fact that a SITTING U.S. Senator will soon be on trial for corruption in his official duties, the media has devoted almost no coverage to this story.
Senator Menendez allegedly accepted lavish private jet trips to luxury resorts and huge campaign contributions from Salomon Melgen, a Florida doctor who has since been convicted of a massive Medicare fraud scheme.
In return, Menendez allegedly pressured officials to drop the Medicare fraud investigation, got visas for Melgen’s Russian girlfriends, and used his perch as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to press the Dominican Republican to award Melgen with a port security contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Last week, Melgen’s sentencing for his 67-count Medicare fraud conviction was postponed by a judge – a potential sign that Melgen is prepared to turn witness against Senator Menendez.
While Senator Menendez is entitled to his day in court, American Commitment wants Senators to tell voters NOW whether they will allow a convicted felon to serve as one of their colleagues.
Why? Because if Menendez is convicted, Democrats will almost certainly make excuses and try to delay calling for his resignation or expulsion in the hopes that a Democrat will be elected governor in New Jersey to replace Chris Christie and keep the seat in Democratic hands.
We need to stop what I fear will be their shameful attempt to accept a felon in their ranks by putting them on the record as soon as possible….
…but Senate Democrats are eerily silent.
American Commitment has sent over 3,400 letters to Capitol Hill last week, and we still haven’t heard an answer from any Democratic U.S. Senator to our simple question: should a convicted felon be allowed to serve in the Senate?
According to Senate Democrats as recently as 2008 – when Republican Ted Stevens was convicted – the answer was a clear no. Back then Democrats put out an official press release saying: “a convicted felon is not going to be able to serve in the United States Senate.”
If convicted, this same standard should obviously apply to Senator Menendez. But will it?
Will your Senators allow a FELON to serve in the Senate? Please click here to ask.
If your Senators reply to your message, please let us know what they say! With an enormous media blackout over this story, it’s critical you and I do all we can to get our elected officials on the record on this potentially major issue as early as possible.
