Pew Report Shows Broad Support For Gun Rights In America
Pete R. Brownell |
That’s according to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center. While most of the media ignored the study, its findings pointed to good news for NRA members, America’s gun owners, and everyone who cherishes our constitutional liberties.
The survey examined the views of 3,900 Americans, including 1,200 gun owners, and found that 55 percent of American adults believe the NRA has too little or the right amount of influence.
Among gun owners, the majority grows to 70 percent. And 19 percent of gun owners said they were a member of the NRA. While your NRA has grown to more than 5 million members, the survey indicates that another 15 to 20 million Americans believe in NRA’s mission and message.
But the Pew study did far more than confirm NRA as an integral part of our culture and political landscape. The survey dug deeper into gun ownership in America.
Contrary to what Second Amendment detractors say, the study found gun ownership to be broad and far-reaching, to include 22 percent of women, 24 percent of African-Americans and 15 percent of Hispanics. Additionally, the study concluded that while nearly half of all gun owners live in rural areas, about 20 percent live in urban communities and another 28 percent are from suburban areas. This confirms what gun owners have long known and previous industry studies have proven: We are a diverse group, growing larger in popularity and representing all walks of life. As evidence illustrates, the majority of first-time gun owners are predominantly women and minorities; this is especially true for Americans in their 20s and 30s, who live in urban or suburban communities.
NRA members should be proud that, because of all of our hard work over the last two decades, the right to carry a firearm has expanded to almost every corner of the country. But we aren’t finished and won’t stop until national Right to Carry has been adopted by Congress and signed into law by the president!
I am confident we can get that job done. NRA members represent America’s freedom-loving gun owners and are among the most politically engaged citizens in the country.
With the support of our membership, America once again has a pro-Second Amendment administration. This does not mean we have won, it means we are now on offense. This is no time for rest! The hard work is just beginning … and we need your help.
The continued growth of the NRA is the primary reason anti-gun legislators lie awake at night. If you are committed to the Second Amendment, self-defense, carrying a firearm on a regular basis, going shooting, taking safety courses and being politically engaged, then you’ve made the choice to stand with the NRA. If you are among the millions who identify with the NRA enough to “say” you are a member, then join us!
I’m often asked, “What can I do to strengthen our Second Amendment?” My answer is simple; set a great example for other gun owners, expose new people to our lifestyle, and yes, recruit friends and family to join the NRA.
If you want your voice to make a difference in capitol buildings around the country and in Washington, D.C.—join!
There is no freedom more fundamental than our constitutionally protected Second Amendment rights.
America’s gun owners believe in that freedom. NRA members fight for that freedom and, more and more, your NRA has become, truly, Freedom’s Safest Place.
