Court Rules that Virginia Election is now a TIE
by Trey Bennett: Yesterday news broke that a House of Delegates race in Virginia had been won by a single vote. Now it's a tie.
In Virginia, the House of Delegates holds 100 members. 51 of those Delegates are Republican, and 49 are Democrat. In November, Del. David Yancey of the 94th District narrowly held off Democrat challenger Shelly Simonds by a mere 10 votes. Ms. Simonds asked for a recount, and yesterday it was reported that she had prevailed by a single vote.
This victory was seen as huge for the Democrats. The Republicans have held power in the House of Delegates for 17 years, and a win in the 94th meant that the House sat at a 50-50 tie. Nationwide, the Left celebrated another victory in their anti-trump "wave."
BUT.... Today, the results of the recount were submitted to a three-judge panel for certification. That panel not only refused to certify the results, but gave another vote to Del. Yancey, thus creating a tie. The Court apparently determined that a ballot that had marks by both candidates' names, also possessed a strike through Ms. Simonds' name.
After awarding this ballot to Del. Yancey, the Court declared that "there is no winner in this election." While that phrase could be used to appropriately describe most elections these days, it makes for some pretty high-stakes political drama in the Commonwealth.
