Senate Confirms Kirstjen Nielsen To Lead Homeland Security
Kirstjen Nielsen |
Earlier today, Majority Leader Mitch MConnell said, “By confirming Ms. Nielsen’s nomination to lead the DHS, this Senate will take a serious step to strengthen our nation’s security. Ms. Nielsen will be charged with leading the department at a critical time. With her understanding of the challenges facing our nation and her experience in prevention and preparedness, I believe that she will excel as the next Secretary of Homeland Security.
“Her leadership will also help in providing continued assistance to the men and women still suffering from the effects of the recent natural disasters in our country. Our nation faces myriad threats, and I look forward to working with Ms. Nielsen to address each of them.”
U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) said in a statement after voting to confirm Kirstjen Nielson: “Securing our nation from the many threats we face is one of Washington’s most important responsibilities. I am confident that Kirstjen Nielsen has the experience, knowledge & leadership skills to serve our nation in this extremely challenging capacity. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, I look forward to working closely with Ms. Nielsen and her team to ensure that Congress is giving DHS all the support it needs.”
An attorney and cybersecurity expert, Nielsen will be the first DHS secretary with previous experience working at the agency. Her confirmation Tuesday gives the White House a DHS chief well versed in the politics and policy goals of Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda. . . .
As the top official leading the DHS which has a $40 billion discretionary budget and 240,000 employees, Nielsen will take on a broad array of responsibilities. The DHS has 22 subagencies, including immigration enforcement, transportation security, disaster preparedness and response, the Secret Service, and the Coast Guard."
