Where Is God In This Corrupt Generation?

by Dr. Alan Keyes: It is not an uncommon question, these days, among those who profess to believe in God. Yet, as with our very existence, the answer comes from His Word: God is in the generation of the righteous. We can find this insight in the 14th Psalm. The generation described therein sounds much like our own:

"The fool has said in his heart 'There is no God.' They are corrupt. They have done abominable works; there is none that does good. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand and seek God. They are all gone aside; they are altogether filthy; there is none that does good, no not one. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge; who eat up my people as they eat bread and call not upon the Lord? There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous. You have shamed the counsel of the poor because the Lord is his refuge."

These days, many who profess to be Christians nonetheless cater to the temper of our times, which bridles at the name of the Lord. In the United States, deceivers pretend that the Constitution of our self-government forbids us to mention it as we go about performing the duties it assigns to us as citizens. Why do we surrender to this lie?

That it is a lie ought to be self-evident to anyone who remembers the generation in which the people of the United States came into the world. As it were with our first outcry as a people, we appealed to "the laws of nature and of nature's God" to justify our existence as such. America called upon the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth, to proclaim our nation's equality under Heaven with every other nation on earth. America relied upon the authority of God, the Creator, to secure our claim to justice.

The good people of America did so, against all odds, because they trusted in the righteous commands God has written into the program that governs all human nature. They trusted God's promise of aid to people willing to stake our identity as a nation on the ground of His endowment of right. They did so, trusting in God's mercy despite the evil present amongst themselves.

Thanks to that trust, God was there, in each new generation of Americans, filling people with the righteous courage to battle against that evil, even though it seemed ineradicably triumphant. What is to become of us, however, in this generation – where the courts and politicians; the tech tyrants and the would-be tyrants of the socialist ilk; the news and entertainment media; and now even major church denominations of all sorts seem to be corrupt and ready to advance works abominable in God's sight? More than that, they seem determined coercively to enforce such wrongs against innocent nascent life, the foundations of human society, and the procreation of humanity itself – discarding the "laws of nature and of Nature's God" He has encoded in Creation so that all things, including all of us, may work together for good.

I understand why those who openly proclaim "There is no God" are eager to abandon the premises of liberty that sustain our nation's constitutional self-government. I understand why would-be tyrants, seeking to return humanity to the habits of oligarchic despotism, cultivate and exploit their foolishness. But now leaders in Christian denominations, Protestant and Catholic alike, are moving to join them – even though this means abandoning, with the faith they profess, the premises of right, including liberty that cannot be maintained without that faith.

Last week, I attended a conference sponsored by Cleveland Right-to-Life, under the banner of "Bringing America back to Life." The double entendre points to a truth that explains why America's faith is now being expressly targeted by all the anti-Christ forces seeking to discourage, demoralize, and dispirit the good people of the United States. Though they reject the knowledge of God, these workers of iniquity know the efficacy of His power.

The primary objective of their strategy to destroy our self-government is to co-opt, subvert, neutralize, and dissolve the gathering of faithful people in Christ, through which God's power flows like nourishing blood, informing, sustaining, and encouraging the commitment to God's justice that is the true and only hope for preserving our Union. The first generation of American patriots did not err in believing that our liberty requires that union, predicated upon God's endowment of right and justice.

Ours is not, as some would have it, a union of states arbitrarily bound together by some coincidence of selfish interest. It is a union of heart, will, and understanding. It unites us in hope because it requires, first of all, that we stand united in goodwill – which is to say the will to do right by God, humanity, and all of God's Creation. But this means, first of all, doing right according to His will for our own existence – striving to be all that He intends us to be – rooted in His understanding; respectful of the bounds and determinations of His will; and yet free to choose – so that the love our choice attests remains as true and uncoerced as the love of God that makes choice possible for us.

"... for God is love. In this, the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only-begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love: not that we loved God but that He loved us...."
