This Should Bother Way More People Than It Is
by Erick Erickson: Congress and various state governments are seeking to release President Trump’s tax returns for no real reason other than to embarrass him. They claim various conflicts of interest, etc. that could be exposed by a release of the President’s tax returns, but there is no proof any such conflicts would be exposed. It is just an excuse.
California and a few other states want to disqualify the President from running for office without releasing his tax returns, despite disclosure of taxes paid not being a requirement for the office.
This is harassment. It serves no purpose but to try to embarrass the President. It sets a dangerous precedent that future legislatures may try to use on future executives. I remain in the camp that thinks the President should release these records, but I do not think any legislature should force this issue.
Today, they only want to do it to the President. Tomorrow, it could be any major figure in America that a ruling party decides it does not like. All Americans should be able to trust the privacy of the income tax system, including the President.
The prior (Obama) administration weaponized the IRS to harass and maliciously obstruct various conservative activist groups. An IRS agent leaked information about Michael Cohen to Michael Avenatti.
Democrats in the Obama Administration began to sow distrust into the tax system by targeting conservatives. They escalated it with leaks about Michael Cohen. Now they are further undermining the integrity of the system.
The drip, drip, drip of institutional collapse in the name of fighting President Trump will eventually cause real collapse in trust and basic operations of government. This needs to stop!
