I’ll See Your Clinton Conspiracy and Raise You My CIA Conspiracy

by Erick Erickson: I have some very smart friends peddling what I think is a not very credible conspiracy. The claim being circulated around is that this impeachment gambit and the whistleblower letter are all to undermine or overshadow an investigation into the Clintons and Joe Biden. Any day now the Inspector General will reveal all.

It boggles my mind how Hillary Clinton is still the great bad boogeyman. Like Elvis Presley, Hillary Clinton will be sighted in Burger Kings in Kalamazoo long after she is dead. She will be the Baba Yaga that conservatives threaten to send after their misbehaving children. Mysterious deaths will be blamed on her a hundred years from now.

I absolutely do not take this seriously. But just wait. We will get a FISA reveal and an McCabe indictment any day now. I think it is more likely that the impeachment investigation and whistleblower complaint are to distract from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation than to distract from a Clinton related conspiracy. And I don’t believe this is a distraction from Epstein.

Let me posit a different kooky theory of my own — one I think has more merit.

The President has been at war with the intelligence community for some time and they have hated him. Many of them are left of center bureaucratic academics. We can get a feel for their contempt of Trump from the FBI agents who loathed him. They are convinced he is a dimwitted would-be kleptocrat and a menace to our society.

A CIA agent who probably has a legal background was embedded at the White House. He or she probably collaborated with friends to build up a whistleblower complaint then went to a Clinton/Schumer alum to help get it exposure. I suspect more than one person actually played a role in helping shape the complaint. They hate the guy, they read every possible bad motive into his actions, and they took their best shot at bringing down his presidency as pay back for his attacks on the intelligence community and their general contempt of him and belief that he’s a corrupt third-world kleptocratic wannabe.

I also believe the President played perfectly into their hands because he has no impulse control. He is surrounded with people like Rudy Giuliani and others who believe kooky conspiracy theories. They believe all the stupid crap they read about Ukraine and heard from their geriatric talking head friends on Fox News. It steered them into impeachment because of a lack of self control and knowledge of how to avoid trouble. If anything, Trump is headed towards impeachment because he watched too many talking heads on Fox News prattling on about things they really did not understand or care to understand.

The intelligence operative(s) was/were absolutely out to get the President if the opportunity arrived and we really should not reward that behavior. But the President absolutely was willing to do things that played perfectly into their hands.

I can believe that. I can believe that because we have had a series of leaks from inside the intelligence community that undermine the President. Hello Reality Winner. Hello leak of the Australian PM transcript. Hello consistently retracted information from various media outlets all designed to put the President in a bad light.

Having tipped my own hand to my own small suggestion of plotting, let me give you the simple and real explanation.

The Democrats have been out to get President Trump since he became the GOP nominee.

They did not need the CIA. They did not need to try to protect Clinton or Biden. Hell, most of them want Warren anyway. They don’t want to protect Biden.

They hate Trump. They have wanted to thrown anything and everything at the wall to see what sticks. They have not formalized impeachment because they would have to give the President due process. Right now they’re just looking to see what piles have steam and smell. After they’ve sorted that all out, they will begin in earnest.

We don’t need an elaborate conspiracy or protection or distraction schemes. We just need a party that thinks it was robbed in 2016 and has wanted revenge ever since. And we have that.
