Arkansans are fed up with the government spending more than it takes in. In 1995, when our national debt was $4.9 trillion, the Senate failed, by a single vote, to pass a balanced budget amendment. Now look where we are today.
With our nation’s debt reaching $21.3 trillion, our country’s prosperity and security is in jeopardy. Without balancing our budget, we’re setting ourselves up for financial ruin. I supported this measure because it would have put us on a path towards long-term fiscal responsibility. I am extremely disappointed that it failed, and I remind those who voted against it today that nations not in control of their finances cannot control their future – and this is not a legacy we want to leave our children and grandchildren.”
Background: The Proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution of the United States, H.J.Res 2, places a limit on federal spending by mandating that the federal budget be balanced each year.
