Officially Reported Unemployment Rate Remains at 8.3%

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released February 2012's jobs numbers:
Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in February, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.3 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment rose in professional and businesses services, health care and social assistance, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, and mining.
The February jobs numbers show the unemployment rate remained at 8.3%. Progress is being made, but a U.S. Chamber infographic shows that the economy needs to create 755,000 jobs per month for the next seven months for employment to return to pre-recession levels. Alcohol Fuels

Patrick L. Booth
Patrick L Booth, Guest Editorial: Brazil burns Alcohol for fuel because it has had little oil available to it but has lots and lots of sugar cane which has about 6 times as much sugar available to turn into alcohol than does corn. In the USA we foolishly burn our food product, corn, to produce alcohol (which is a wonderful industrial solvent but poor fuel) to mix into our oil based fuels supposedly to make our oil fuels burn more cleanly and to satisfy a stupid environment movement that has no ability to comprehend the consequences. It doesn't, of course, but it has and does increase the prices of both fuels and foods which the Democrat Socialist do like.

Alcohol has about 1/2 the total energy by weight that gasoline does and requires twice as much in an engine to produce the same power as does gasoline. That means adding 10% alcohol to fuel decreases power by at least 5% requiring that much more throttle to be used burning even more fuel than the engine would have without the alcohol additive. The side effects are that the solvent cleans oil from off the cylinders and valves, hardens rubber, plastic, attacks aluminum parts, etc. thereby shortening engine life. Outboard motors all over the country have been utterly destroyed because the users did not comprehend the dangers of putting a solvent in their fuels. Fortunately, some premium brands of gas have no alcohol content and thus can be used in small engines and outboards without harm.

Everything we consume is delivered to every store in every town in every state all thru the nation by vehicles which burn diesel fuels including the tractors that farmers use to grow those foods, etc. It would be much wiser, economical, and more environmentally friendly to grow oil producing plants whose products could expand bio-diesels lowering prices for every commercial carrying truck, train, and aircraft that uses DIESEL for fuel.

Of course, that would be intelligent use of resources so wouldn't require a Government program and would be environmentally useful so wouldn't be to the advantage of the socialist big government environmental movement so don't expect any politicians to get behind the idea. Stupid is as stupid does and nothing is as stupid as& politicians selling votes.

Destruction Of Our Society

The below letter to the editor is by Robert "Bob" McDowell, Jr. He is a Professional Engineer and Geologist with over 50 years experience in creating drilling prospects, supervising drilling, well completion, production operation, and pipeline design for oil and gas including repair of problem wells. McDowell is a conservative and active in the Oklahoma Republican Assembly.

Bob McDowell
By Bob McDowell: Among other things to come to my attention was written information received recently concerning changes made last year (2011) to the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) operations manual concerning the treatment of ILLEGAL Alien detainees. ICE, for those unfamiliar with the connection of the multitude of US Government bureaus, commissions, departments, ad nauseam, is a division of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security, established following the attacks of 9/11 and vastly expanded following the inauguration of PRESBO in January of 2009). ICE is the bureau to which Tulsa County Sheriff Glanz sends any illegal aliens that may come into his department custody after a contact for some other law violation and which has, all too often, instructed him or his deputies to release them because they do not have time to come after them.

The source* quotes the 2011 Operations Manual for ICE as stating that the agents will provide "hormone therapy" to detainees who say they are transgender, that is changing their sex from one to the other. The manual further states that all illegal alien detainees shall be screened by a specially trained detention officer within 12 hours of arriving at the facility. The manual specifically states that the "screening shall ... inquire into a transgender detainee's gender self-identification and history of transition related care, when a detainee self-identifies as transgender."

If the self-professed illegal alien transgender detainee has been receiving hormone therapy on the outside, ICE will give it to him or her while detained" (at taxpayer expense). "The report states: "Transgender detainees who were already receiving hormone therapy when taken into ICE custody shall have continued access. All transgender detainees shall have access to mental health care, and other transgender-related health care and medication based on medical need. Treatment shall follow accepted guidelines regarding medically necessary transition-related care."

The ICE detention operations manual also says that illegal alien detainees who are
pregnant will be provided with help for not just the impending delivery but also in obtaining an abortion. According to the report every detention facility "shall directly or contractually provide its female detainees with access to:
  • 1. pregnancy services including routine or specialized prenatal care, postpartum follow-up, lactation services and abortion services at outlined herein;
  • 2. counseling and assistance for pregnant women in keeping with their express desires in planning for their pregnancy, whether they desire abortion, adoptive services or to keep the child ..."

One wonders how far the 'politically correct activists in the PRESBO administration, and those in the entrenched bureaucracy will go to further their perceived agenda of the complete destruction of our society and economy. The politicians in Washington continually first bring up reduction of services in Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Defense Preparedness, and others directly affecting the citizens before ever considering reducing the bloated bureaucracy that on a daily basis intrudes on the actions, freedom and security of the population, whose taxes pay for their very existence, and lavish life style.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a presidential candidate, or sitting President, publicly state that he/she would abolish the DOE, DOE, DHS, EPA, OSHA, FDA, BIA, and terminate all financial aid to those nations whose officials continually curse and call for the destruction of our Republic. Such a person would probably win an election in a historic landslide.

Senate Dems Vote Down Keystone Pipeline Jobs - House Votes For Merging Markets American Job Creation

Toon Created 6 mo's ago applies today!
By Gary Varvel
Today in Washington, D.C - March 9, 2011:
The Senate is not in session today and will reconvene on Monday afternoon to resume consideration of S. 1813, the highway bill. The House opened for less than 5 minutes and then adorned until 10 Am on Tuesday.

Yesterday the House passed (390-23) H.R. 3606: Reopening American Capital Markets to Emerging Growth Companies Act of 2011 - "To increase American job creation and economic growth by improving access to the public capital markets for emerging growth companies." Only a simple majority of 207 votes were needed to pass this bill. Because of this the following interesting demographics are noted. All Republicans (except 9 not voting) voted for the bill and 158 Democrats voted for the bill with 23 voting against the bill and 10 not voting. The Majority of all State delegations supported the bill. The No votes were from the following delegations: In CA 6 Democrats voted against including the proverbial disturbed Henry Waxman while 26 other democrats including Speaker Pelosi vote Yes.  The other states with nominal democrat no votes were GA, IL, ME, MD, MA, MI, NJ, NY, NC, OH (outgoing Kucinich), and WA.

Yesterday, following personal lobbying from President Obama, Senate Democrats filibustered an amendment to the highway bill from Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) that would have finally authorized the Keystone XL pipeline. The vote was 56-42.

Yesterday, after President Obama “personally lobbied” Senate Democrats, they voted down an amendment from Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) that would have finally authorized the Keystone XL pipeline after repeated delays from the White House.

After Politico reported that “President Barack Obama is intervening in a Senate fight over the Keystone XL oil pipeline and personally lobbying Democrats to reject an amendment calling for its construction,” Bloomberg News added, “Ahead of a vote . . . the president has made personal appeals to Democrats from Midwestern states, where many of the jobs would be created . . . .” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed President Obama’s lobbying efforts against the Keystone XL pipeline to reporters at his press briefing yesterday.

The Wall Street Journal wrote last night, “Every Republican who voted supported the proposal, and 11 Democrats joined them, despite last-minute lobbying from President Barack Obama, called senators personally to persuade them it was ‘irresponsible.’ . . . Republican lawmakers and the Business Roundtable were quick to denounce the rejection of the measure. Sen. Mitch McConnell, the chamber’s Republican leader, pinned the blame on Mr. Obama.”

Clearly, the president’s lobbying of Democrats to vote against creating jobs and securing American energy worked, since the amendment fell just short of the 60 votes needed for approval. Politico notes, “Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) wryly congratulated Obama on his lobbying efforts. ‘That was very strong work by President Obama himself, making personal calls to Democrats,’ Lugar said. ‘He understood that a majority of the American public and a majority at least of the Senate are strongly in favor of this project.’”

It’s amazing that the President continues to oppose a project that even labor unions argue would create tens of thousands of American jobs. And at a time of serious concerns about the Middle East, Keystone XL would enhance American energy security by allowing better access to domestic oil and bringing more oil from our friends and allies in Canada.

Politico explains the upshot of the vote yesterday: “Thursday’s squeaker of a Senate vote on the Keystone XL pipeline serves both as a warning to President Barack Obama that a majority of both houses of Congress supports the pipeline and as encouragement to Republicans to keep pushing the issue. Obama had personally lobbied Senate Democrats with phone calls urging them to oppose an amendment to the highway bill that would fast-track the Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline. And as it turned out, he needed every bit of their help. In all, 11 Democrats joined 45 Republicans to support the pipeline. Only the fact that 60 votes were needed for passage saved the White House from an embarrassing defeat.”

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell summed up the situation, saying, “The Democrat-controlled Senate just turned its back on job creation and energy independence in a single vote by rejecting the bipartisan Hoeven-Lugar amendment. They rejected legislation that would have led to construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline and the thousands of private-sector jobs that come with it. At a moment when tensions are rising in the Middle East, millions of Americans are struggling to find work and millions more are struggling with the rising cost of gas, Democrat opposition to this legislation shows how deeply out of touch they are with the concerns of middle-class Americans. President Obama’s personal pleas to wavering Senators may have tipped the balance against this legislation. When it comes to delays over Keystone, anyone looking for a culprit should now look no further than the Oval Office.”

Just Words, Mr. President

By Ken Blackwell, Contributing Author: Just words? Just words? Don’t tell me words don’t matter,” said Barack Obama in 2008. He was responding to criticisms from the Hillary Clinton campaign that he had never done anything but deliver speeches.

Mr. Obama then recited the lines from Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He followed it by offering “All Men are Created Equal,” from the Declaration of Independence. And he closed with “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

All those hallowed words were followed up by actions. Dr. King went from the National Mall to “Bloody Sunday” at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma , Alabama in 1965. Many of the Founding Fathers who signed that Declaration in 1776 would actually risk “their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.” Franklin D. Roosevelt, when he spoke on Inauguration Day, March 4, 1933 , of our only fear being fear itself had just come away from an assassination attempt. Riding next to him in his open car was Mayor Cermak, who was killed. As our president for twelve years, Mr. Roosevelt would sail to summit conferences and fly to meetings of the Big Three, all the while risking being killed by the Nazis.

What actions have preceded President Obama’s assuring words to Israel on Iran ? This president came to office pledging to the Iranian mullahs “an open hand, not a clenched fist.” They spat on his open hand. When the people of Iran rose up following obviously rigged elections in June, 2009, Mr. Obama declined to offer any support for the Green Revolution in the streets. Instead, green turned to red—the red bloodstains on the cobblestones as the mullahs’ hired guns shot down pro-democracy demonstrators.

Mr. Obama has allowed Ahmadinejad , Iran ’s putative head of state, to come to America to address the UN General Assembly and to deliver his rants against his neighbor, Israel . Ahmadinejad was further allowed to disport himself at Columbia University . All the while, Ahmadinejad had two American hikers locked up on trumped up charges.

The Obama administration betrayed our new allies in Eastern Europe — Poland , Hungary , and the Czech Republic —by ditching our anti-ballistic missile plans. For what purpose?
To gain Russia ’s cooperation in dealing with Iran . Did we get it? Actually, no. Russia is busily pulling the teeth of UN resolutions dealing with Iran and Iran ’s puppet state, Syria .

Re-set anyone?

Now, President Obama assures Israel he “has their back.” Well, thanks to President Obama, Israel ’s back is to the wall. Hamas, Hezbollah, and some new regional players are also at Israel ’s back. It’s getting a bit crowded back there.

No one can doubt President Obama’s sincerity. He believes what he says when he says it.
They’re not just words.

He offered brave words early in his administration when he signaled a major change in U.S. foreign policy. No longer would the United States stand accused in the dock of world opinion. Under President Obama, we were at last joining an enlightened humanity.

With a great, left-handed flourish, the just-inaugurated President Barack Obama signed his Executive Order. In keeping with his campaign promise, made over and over again: Guantánamo Bay would close in one year.

What was that number? Executive Order Zero. Not only is Gitmo still open, but the most liberal Democratic Congress since Lyndon B. Johnson decreed in the waning days of 2010 that Gitmo shall remain open. (It’s the only good thing the 111th Congress did.)

So, are Mr. Obama’s words of assurance to Israel something substantial? Or are they, in Hillary’s words, just words?

If I had the responsibility for the life of the Jewish people and the survival of the State of Israel, I think I would look for something more solid on which to plan my own actions.

We shall see. Charles Krauthammer memorably said Israel was founded to prevent a second Holocaust, not to invite one. Israelis should remember that the Jewish people suffered a Holocaust because they trusted too much in the kindness of strangers.

Mounting Debate On Re-Authorization / Expansion Of U.S. Export-Import Bank

We are in Debt!
Why are we paying for this?
If I am paying,
Where is my return?
There is a mounting debate swirling around President Obama, the Republicans, and the re-authorization / expansion of the U.S. Export-Import Bank. Conservatives have weighed in on the re-authorization of the "Export-Import Bank. Did you even know this Bank funded by taxpayers existed?  Please note the following comments:

RED STATE’S ERICK ERICKSON
“The Export-Import Bank is a federal agency whose sole reason for existence is to use your tax dollars to subsidize sales of American manufactured goods to foreign buyers. It is nothing short of corporate welfare, and its business model (providing loans and loan guarantees at below market rates) is virtually identical to that of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

“Almost half of all Ex-Im loans wind up lining the pockets of just one company: Boeing. General Electric is another top beneficiary. That’s right. Your tax dollars are underwriting a profitable company that didn’t pay any federal income tax in 2010 and whose CEO is Obama’s chief spokesman for more stimulus.

“And if these loans go bad, your tax dollars are legally obligated to bail them out. It also has the perverse result of actually costing U.S. jobs.”[Erick Erickson, “Will Republicans Vote to Raise the Debt Limit for the Fannie Mae of Corporate Welfare?RedState.com, 3/5/2012]

WALL STREET JOURNAL
“The bigger issue is that the bank by its nature helps some companies at the expense of others. ExIm, for instance, helped its biggest client—Boeing—win airplane contracts in 2011 from Air China, Air India, Cathay Pacific and others. That's great for Boeing, which accounted for 45.6%, or $40.7 billion, of ExIm's total exposure in fiscal 2011.

“But this subsidy means that foreign airlines can then buy newer aircraft more cheaply than their U.S. competitors. This gives them an advantage in the global air transportation market. In a letter to Congress last month, Delta estimated that ExIm cost the U.S. airline industry up to 7,500 jobs and $684 million a year.” [“The Export Subsidy Boomerang,” Wall Street Journal, 3/3/2012]

HERITAGE ACTION
“Next week, the House may vote reauthorizeand expand the federal Export-Import Bank. The ExIm Bank provides taxpayer-subsidized loans to American exporters. The Heritage Foundation has described ‘the ExIm Bank as Fannie Mae for exporters’ which ultimately means taxpayers end up ‘holding the bag for bad loans.’

“…The Wall Street Journal summed up the fight on the ExIm Bank perfectly: If the GOP wants to have a principled battle about fiscal waste and market distortions, this is a good one.

“The bank should be eliminated, and conservatives around the country will certainly be watching.” [“Ex-Im Bank: The Fannie Mae for Exporters,” Heritage Action, 3/3/2012]

CLUB FOR GROWTH
“The Export-Import Bank's actions are nothing more than market-distorting subsidies that pick winners and losers in the private sector. Market forces should dictate trade flows, not bureaucrats and politicians.” [“Key Vote Alert - "NO" on Export-Import Bank Reauthorization,” Club for Growth]

WASHINGTON EXAMINER’S TIM CARNEY
“In its latest act of venture socialism, the Obama administration has offered a novel taxpayer backstop to General Electric, the multinational industrial conglomerate that is famously close to this administration, and that spends more on federal lobbying than any other company. The government accessory in this instance is the Export-Import Bank of the United States, a federal agency that finances U.S. exports at taxpayer risk.” [Timothy P. Carney, “Big banks binge on Bush- Obama 'venture socialism,’” Washington Examiner, 11/13/11]

HOT AIR’S JAZZ SHAW
“[T]here is a coalition of people working to keep Ex-Im in it’s current form, including Republican Gary Miller and Democrat Barney Frank. Now, I don’t know about you, but when I see a pairing like that, my first response is to reach for my back pocket and make sure I still have my wallet.”[Jazz Shaw, “Time to dump the Ex-Im Bank?Hot Air, 3/3/2012]

President Obama Blocks Bipartisan Keystone XL Jobs

President Obama’s personal pleas to wavering Senators may have tipped the balance against this legislation. When it comes to delays over Keystone, anyone looking for a culprit should now look no further than the Oval Office.’ ~ Mitch McConnell

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell offered the following regarding the Democrat-controlled Senate’s rejection of the bipartisan Hoeven-Lugar amendment which would have advanced the XL Keystone Pipeline:
“The Democrat-controlled Senate just turned its back on job creation and energy independence in a single vote by rejecting the bipartisan Hoeven-Lugar amendment.
Sean Hackbarth. Policy Advocate at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce responded to the President's interference and the blocking of bipartisan support for the Keystone XL Pipeline:
Remember a couple of weeks ago when Jay Carney created an alternate universe and told the White House press corps that “the President didn't turn down the Keystone pipeline”? He blamed partisan politics for the denial of the permit that would link Gulf Coast refineries to Canadian shale oil

The President didn’t turn down Keystone XL yet he is lobbying Senators to oppose a Senate amendment in the transportation bill that would remove the State Department’s role in approving the pipeline.

I would’ve thought Jay Carney’s explanation would have involved protecting Executive Branch authority. Instead, he called bills to approve the pipeline "ineffectual, sham legislation." I wouldn’t call 20,000 jobs from Keystone XL to be a “sham.”

In another energy speech yesterday, the President said, “We can’t just rely on fossil fuels from the last century, we have got to continually develop new sources of energy.” Great! The Chamber agrees and is pushing for an “All-of-the-Above” energy strategy. But what differentiates this from the President’s rhetoric is that it is truly an “All-of-the-Above” strategy that includes coal, renewable, nuclear energy, natural gas, and … oil--thus the need for the Keystone XL pipeline.

Keystone XL doesn’t need any more barriers. The President should approve this popular, job-creating project.

Politico: Obama "Personally Lobbying Democrats To Reject" Keystone Pipeline

by AF Branco
Today in Washington, DC - March 8, 2012:
The Senate today again resumed consideration of S. 1813, the highway bill. As many as 30 amendments to the highway bill will be worked through and voted on over the next few days of consideration. Among the first series of votes will be an amendment from Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) to authorize the Keystone XL pipeline over the president’s rejection, an amendment from Sen. Susan Collines (R-ME) to block the EPA from implementing its costly Boiler-MACT regulations, and an amendment from Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) to expand offshore drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Yesterday, The Bureau of Reclamation Small Conduit Hydropower Development and Rural Jobs Act, H.R. 2842 passed (265-154). It will face a tougher test in the Democrat-controlled Senate where Democrats will oppose language in the bill that exempts small hydropower projects on Bureau of Reclamation property from review under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Reuters is reporting:  House  Speaker John Boehner, signaling a lack of Republican support for a stalled $260 billion transportation bill, said on Thursday he was ready to pursue a less-ambitious version under consideration by the Democratic-controlled Senate. A day after imploring House Republicans to end their deep divisions over the five-year measure to rebuild roads, bridges and railways, Boehner moved a step closer to giving up on the troubled House bill altogether. "The current plan is to see what the Senate can produce and to bring their bill up," Boehner told a news conference. "In the meantime we're going to continue to have conversations with members about a longer-term approach, which most of our members want. But at this point in time, the plan is to bring up the Senate bill or something like it," Boehner said.

Politico reports this morning, “President Barack Obama is intervening in a Senate fight over the Keystone XL oil pipeline and personally lobbying Democrats to reject an amendment calling for its construction, according to several sources familiar with the talks.

“The White House lobbying effort, including phone calls from the president to Democrats, signals that the vote could be close when it heads to the floor Thursday. The president is trying to defeat an amendment that would give election-year fodder to his Republican critics who have accused him of blocking a job-creating energy project at a time of high gas prices.

“The amendment, proposed by Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.), states that Obama would have no role in such cross-border permitting decisions since, in this case, the pipeline would originate in Canada. The measure would need 60 votes to pass, and Obama has already lost two Democrats who back the proposal - Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Mary Landrieu - and is at risk of losing more moderates and vulnerable Democrats.”

So despite President Obama’s talk of embracing an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy, he’s apparently “personally lobbying Democrats” in the Senate to vote against Sen. Hoeven’s amendment to remove the White House’s road blocks to the pipeline and begin construction. This is even more remarkable in light of White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s assertion last month that “the President didn't turn down the Keystone pipeline” and Obama himself bragging about “approving dozens of new pipelines” in a speech in North Carolina yesterday.

This was too much for Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who took to the Senate floor, saying, “There’s a report this morning that President Obama is personally making phone calls to Democrat Senators he thinks might vote for this amendment. He’s asking them not to.  And, frankly, it’s hard to even comprehend how out of touch he is on this issue. I mean, think about it: at a moment when millions are out of work, gas prices are skyrocketing and the Middle East is in turmoil, we’ve got a president who’s up making phone calls trying to block a pipeline here at home.  It’s unbelievable.”

A vote on Sen. Hoeven’s amendment should begin sometime after 2 PM this afternoon. Will Senate Democrats support American energy security and thousands of jobs or will they pay heed to President Obama’s “personal lobbying” against the Keystone XL pipeline?

Alternative Energy Crash And Damaging Gas Prices

A.F. "Tony" Branco:
While President Obama touts algal biofuels; $14M in new RandD funding and mocks the oil capability of the United States, we are faced with the following:
$40 More Per Fill-Up
Tank Of Gas Costs Nearly $40 More Today Than When Obama Took Office

President On Payroll Holiday: ‘$40 Can Make All The Difference In The World’
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “We asked folks to tell what it was like -- what it would be like if they lost $40 out of every one of their paychecks -- because we wanted to make sure that people understood this is not just an abstract argument, this is concrete. This makes a difference in the lives of folks all across the country in very important ways… It would be $40 less for groceries to feed your kids; it would be $40 less for the medications you depend on; $40 less to cover bills and the rent; $40 less to take care of an elder parent, or to donate to a church or a charity.”(President Obama, Remarks, 2/14/12)

OBAMA: “And that's what this debate is all about. This is what’s at stake for millions of Americans. This is why it matters to people -- it matters a heck of a lot. And I’m asking the American people to keep their stories coming. Tell us what $40 means to you.” (President Obama, Remarks, 2/14/12)

ICYMI: Newt Takes Gregory To Task on Meet The Press

Editor's Note: The running of this article is not an endorsement of Newt Gingrich as a candidate for President. Which can also be said for articles run on occasion by elected and non-elected officials who are also candidates for president. Having said the above enjoy Newt being Newt "eating the press alive."

Red, White Blue News: David Gregory, Meet The Press (MSNBC), tried to mess with Newt Gingrich about Rush Limbaugh. Newt wasn't having it. Instead Newt answered like only Newt can.

Fight for Freedom

Heritage Action: In 2010, the Tea Party movement struck a history-changing blow to the Washington Establishment by working to elect limited government, constitutional conservatives. But if you listen to the media, conservatives are fading everywhere from Congress to the campaign trail.

Nothing could be further from the truth; the strength of conservative principles continues to endure and thrive. In the months since, the protected classes in the American political system – Big Wall Street, Big Government, Big Labor and Big Business – are coming under increasing scrutiny.

There is an awakening across the country, and the fight is on to return power to individuals and localities, empower individuals and unleash America’s entrepreneurial spirit. As Ronald Reagan said, “we’re not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline.”

Gas Prices From Hell: $40 More For A Family To Fill Up Than When Obama Took Office

Today in Washington, DC - March 7, 2012:
The Senate reconvened and resumed consideration of S. 1813, the highway bill. Senators continue to work towards an agreement on amendments to the highway bill. Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) failed to cut off debate on the bill. His vote on cloture fell short of the 60 votes needed, 52-44.

The Senate will recess between 5 and 6 PM for a cybersecurity briefing.

Also yesterday, the Senate voted 95-2 to confirm Mary Elizabeth Phillips to be US District Judge for Western District of Missouri and 93-4 to confirm Thomas Rice to be US District Judge for the Eastern District of Washington.

The House yesterday passed 370-39 H.R. 4105 to ensure the United States can impose duties on subsidized goods from China and Vietnam.  The Senate passed the legislation on Monday. The bill, which overturns a recent court ruling.  It  now goes to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it into law.  This is a mixed bag.  Tariffs are indeed constitutional and a means for revenue for the U.S. Treasury, and while both China and Vietnam under communist rule and controlled labor rates, etc, have an advantage in keeping prices lower than in the U.S.  However, the negative is that Americans will be paying both higher prices for goods and higher sales taxes on those goods while being faced with difficult economic times.  Some conservatives argued this is a backdoor tax increase on consumers.  Also, it makes you wonder how you would expect your local lender to react to you if you kicked him in the crotch.  China is the lender and the U.S. is in debt to them. Also, trade wars often lead eventually to real war.  Only time will tell.

The House is expected to vote on H.R. 2842 hydroelectric bill. The bill would small hydroelectricity projects that utilize existing Bureau of Reclamation canals and ditches the ability to bypass costly and time-consuming environmental reviews. A win-win, in using the run-off canals and ditches to produce power. There may be a vote on another Democrat-sponsored amendment that would continue the environmental permitting requirement for hydroelectric projects involving Bureau of Reclamation infrastructure. Then a vote on the bill itself which is expect to pass with the Republicans holding a 242-193 advantage in the House. It is unknown if the Senate is willing to vote on this common sense bill.

Gas Prices From Hell
As gas prices continue to rise, we’ve now reached the point where a typical family will pay nearly $40 more to fill up their minivan today than when President Obama first took office. In January 2009, the average price of gas was $1.83 per gallon and the price has ballooned to an average of $3.77 per gallon today. For a minivan with a 20 gallon gas tank, that works out to about $40 more to fill up today than when President Obama was inaugurated.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration’s own Energy Department doesn’t see relief in sight. According to the Los Angeles Times, “[T]he Energy Department has boosted its pump-price predictions for the peak driving season, defined as April through September, and for the full year. Peak prices will average $3.925 for a gallon of regular gasoline in the peak driving season, 5.7% higher than during last year’s peak season and up from February’s forecast of $3.62 during the peak months, according to the agency’s monthly Short-term Energy Outlook. The high is projected to be $3.96 in May. If national prices average just south of $4 a gallon during the peak season, then there will be times when the U.S. average probably will exceed $4. And California drivers can expect to pay a lot more because of the state’s cleaner-burning type of gasoline.” Little wonder, then, that The Wall Street Journal headlines a story today, “With Gas Prices Rising, Obama Feels Heat.”

Recall that just a month ago, the president was travelling around the country declaring, “$40 can make all the difference in the world.” He said at one point if the payroll tax cut were not renewed, “This makes a difference in the lives of folks all across the country in very important ways…  It would be $40 less for groceries to feed your kids; it would be $40 less for the medications you depend on; $40 less to cover bills and the rent; $40 less to take care of an elder parent, or to donate to a church or a charity.”

But what about now when American families are seeing that extra $40 leave their wallets when they visit the gas station? Does President Obama still believe “People can’t afford losing $40 . . . . Not right now”?

This morning, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said, "For the President’s part, he often says that Americans should judge him not only by his words but on his deeds. So when it comes to gas prices, I’ve pointed out that the President continues to limit offshore areas to energy production and is granting fewer leases on public land for oil drilling; has encouraged countries like Brazil to move forward with their own offshore drilling projects; continues to impose burdensome regulations on the domestic energy sector that will further drive up the cost of gasoline for the consumer; has repeatedly proposed raising taxes on the energy sector, which we all know would only drive up gas prices even higher and, finally, has flatly rejected the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline. All these things help drive up the cost of gas and increase our dependence on foreign oil. So the President simply can’t claim to have a comprehensive approach to energy, because he doesn’t. And any time he says he does, the American people should remember one word: Keystone.

"The President likes to talk about fairness. But when it comes to rising gas prices, the American people don’t think it’s particularly fair that at a time when they’re struggling to fill up the tank, their own tax dollars are being used to subsidize failing solar companies of the President’s choosing, not to mention the bonuses that executives at these companies keep getting.
I think most Americans are tired of reading about all the goodies this administration’s allies are getting on their dime even as the President goes around lecturing them about fairness. I’ll tell you what’s not fair: what’s not fair is that it now costs about $40 more to fill up a 20-gallon tank of gasoline than it did when this President took office, and yet this administration continues to pursue policies that would make it even worse."

Romney Wins Alaska Republican Caucus

Yesterday, while many checked out for the night, in the Alaska Time Zone, the State of Alaska reported its Super Tuesday Republican caucus results. With 100% of the caucus completed, Mitt Romney won Alaska with on-third of the votes cast in the caucuses.

Alaska (27 Delegates): Mitt Romney 33%; Rick Santorum 29%; Ron Paul 24%; Gingrich 14%. Of the 27 delegates, 3 delegates have not been assigned. Assigned delegates were Romney 8 delegates; Santorum 7 delegates; Paul 6 delegate; and Gingrich 3 delegates.

While the people's vote is always important, sometimes a specific person's vote gets the news.  On Fox News, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was asked who she voted for and responded that she had voted for Newt Gingrich. She added "My preference tonight was for the cheerful one." In a former debate, Gingrich, when asked to pick one word to describe himself, said "cheerful." In January, Gov. Palin's husband, Todd Palin, an independent, endorsed Gingrich. It looks like 85.8% of the Republicans of Alaska expressed a different opinion than the Palin family.

With all the March 6th Super Tuesday primaries over, many pundits are noting the fact that the spoiler preventing Rick Santorum from overtaking Mitt Romney appears to be Newt Gingrich.  Gingrich has won 2 states, his home state of Georgia and neighboring South Carolina out of all the contested races to date.  So did Mitt Romney in winning Massachusetts with 72%.  In 2008, Mike Huckabee won his home state of Arkansas after dropping out as a candidate.  But based on states voted States this year, Huckabee had also won Iowa, Tennessee, and Georgia.

At Immigration, It's Sex of One, Half a Dozen of the Other

Tony Perkins, FRC Washington Update: Breaking the law has its advantages--like complimentary sex changes, for one. I suppose now that the Obama administration has dispensed with conscience rights and religious freedom, there's no limit to the health care taxpayers can be ordered to provide. Under new rules from the office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), that "care" now rewards illegal immigrants with everything from government-sponsored abortions to transgender hormone treatments. The standards, just released from ICE, insist that law-breakers are entitled to better care than most U.S. citizens!

"A pregnant detainee in custody shall have access to pregnancy services... including abortion services," the guidelines explain. In addition to abortion, taxpayers will also have to foot the bill to get these women to the abortion clinic. As if that weren't outrageous enough, ICE actually commits federal dollars to drugs that are designed to help men look and sound like women and visa versa. "Transgender detainees who were already receiving hormone therapy when taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody should have continued access," the rules state. That's quite a parting gift for people who are trespassing into America illegally.

Chris Crane, President of the National ICE Council, reminds The Daily Caller that most of these detainees are convicted criminals. "They came out of jails and prisons where we treated them based on the charges that they were either convicted of or arrested for. The second they come to ICE, we have to treat them with a completely different standard. We throw law enforcement and security protocol... out the window." Now, it's important for people to understand that these benefits are not defined by the ObamaCare legislation. They are, however, part of the unilateral power vested in the government by the President's health care law. In the 2,000-plus pages of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, there are literally 4,156 issues left to the administration's discretion. We have all come to realize that those issues include outrages like contraception mandates and politically correct surgeries that no Congress would have approved. That's why the health care law is so dangerous. It empowers the government to practice politics--instead of empowering others to practice medicine.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) is just one House member stunned by the ICE reforms. "The Obama administration's new detention manual is more like a hospitality guide for illegal immigrants. The administration goes beyond common sense to accommodate illegal immigrants and treats them better than citizens in federal custody." An ICE spokesman tried to tamp down the criticism--but ultimately made it worse by telling reporters, "It is important to note that one of the main goals of the agency... is to increase fiscal prudence and efficiencies within the system." How could the posh treatment of illegal aliens possibly help America's bottom line? And, more importantly, how is exacerbating a mental health crisis like cross-dressing beneficial to them or us? In the end, it doesn't matter who you are. This administration won't let you leave the country without taking some liberal indoctrination with you.

ABC: "Green Firms Get Fed Cash, Give Execs Bonuses, Fail"

Today in Washington, D.C. - March 6, 2012:
The Senate resumed consideration of S. 1813, the highway bill. The Senate will vote on cloture on the Reid substitute amendment, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) tries to cut off debate on the bill. This afternoon, the Senate will vote on two district judge nominees.

Yesterday the House names some post offices. Today the House will consider H.R. 4105 To apply the countervailing duty provisions of the Tariff Act of 1930 "To nonmarket economy countries, and for other purposes." Also, being considered H.R. 2842 - "To authorize all Bureau of Reclamation conduit facilities for hydro-power development under Federal Reclamation law, and for other purposes."

ABC News has a must-read story today on the results of the Obama administration’s green energy financing program, titled, “Green Firms Get Fed Cash, Give Execs Bonuses, Fail.”

ABC reports, “President Obama's Department of Energy helped finance several green energy companies that later fell into bankruptcy -- but not before the firms doled out six-figure bonuses and payouts to top executives, a Center for Public Integrity and ABC News investigation found.

“Take, for instance, Beacon Power Corp., the second recipient of an Energy Department loan guarantee in 2009. In March 2010, the Massachusetts energy storage company paid cash bonuses of $259,285 to three executives in part due to progress made on the $43 million energy loan, Securities and Exchange Commission records show. Last October, Beacon Power filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

“EnerDel, maker of lithium-ion battery systems, landed a $118.5 million energy grant in August 2009. About one-and-a-half years later, Vice President Joe Biden toured a company plant in Indiana and heralded its taxpayer-supported expansion as one of the ‘100 Recovery Act Projects That Are Changing America.’ Two months after Biden's visit, EnerDel corporate parent Ener1 paid $725,000 in bonuses to three executives -- including $450,000 to then-CEO Charles Gassenheimer, who led Biden on the tour. This January, Ener1 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

“At least two other firms that benefited from Energy Department funding -- one a $500,000 grant, the other a $535 million loan guarantee -- handed out hefty payouts to executives and later went bankrupt.”

ABC points out, “Solyndra, bankruptcy records show, was among the companies doling out thousands in executive payments -- in its case, just months prior to its late August collapse and early September bankruptcy. As a criminal investigation and House inquiry continue into the company's implosion, the government must navigate bankruptcy proceedings in hopes of recovering a piece of its $535 million investment. . . . One company executive said the Energy Department explicitly allows for federal funds to be used to pay out executive bonuses. . . . Solyndra executives, bankruptcy records show, pocketed thousands in payments just months before the company dismissed 1,100 workers. At least 17 company executives received two sets of payments -- ranging from $37,000 to $60,000 per payment -- on the same days in April and July 2011. The insider payments, reported last year in the San Jose Mercury News, came as the company catapulted toward bankruptcy in early September.”

Incredibly, ABC reports, “Beacon Power's bonuses were specifically linked to executives' progress in landing the company's $43 million Energy Department loan guarantee in 2009. Securing the loan was among the measures used to establish how much executives would pocket in bonuses, company SEC filings show.< ‘The DOE loan application was approved by the credit review board, making us the first public company and the second of 16 applicants to receive the commitment,’ the document notes.” ABC summarizes, “At least six Energy Department loan and grant recipients -- from electric car maker Fisker Automotive to electric-car battery maker A123 Systems to Colorado-based Abound Solar -- have laid off workers or suffered financial woes. Those setbacks come on top of the companies that have already filed for bankruptcy.” It’s amazing considering this story and all the previous ones of the failures of the Obama administration’s Energy Department pumping taxpayer money into Solyndra, Beacon Power, EnerDel, and others, and recalling that just last week, President Obama doubled down on his pledge to continue this type of spending. And yet the president has refused the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, which wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dime, and could put thousands of Americans to work right away.

As ABC noted, “To watchdogs, the pattern of firms awarding bonuses only to file for bankruptcy raises questions about how well the Energy Department chose its winners, and how thoroughly it kept an eye on them once selected. ‘Giving a bonus to the executives under these circumstances is rewarding failure with our money with no chance of getting it back,’ said Leslie Paige, spokeswoman for the nonpartisan Citizens Against Government Waste. ‘Taxpayers need some representation here. They didn't really get it.’”

Ten Questions Obama Should Be Asked At All Press Conferences

Lachlan Markay: President Obama will hold his first official press conference since October on Tuesday. Plenty has happened since then: the president has illegally appointed four officials to federal posts, Energy Secretary Steven Chu has again demonstrated his lack of concern for rising gas prices, Iran has continued its march towards nuclear weapons, and the Department of Health and Human Services has usurped Americans’ rights to free practice of their religion.
In light of these and other happenings over the last few months, here are ten questions that we feel should be asked of the president when he takes the podium on Tuesday.
  1. Your Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, has now been on record three times stating it is not the policy of his department to help lower gas prices. Do you agree with Secretary Chu that this is not the job of the Energy Department?
  2. Your administration has touted the declining unemployment rate. Do you plan any policy proposals to deal with the steady – and ongoing – decline in labor force participation?
  3. According to The Heritage Foundation, there are over $2 trillion in tax hikes in your latest budget proposal, when you yourself stated that raising taxes is anathema to economic recovery. How will tax hikes spur job growth, or is that secondary to some other policy goal?
  4. Your Justice Department insisted the Senate was in recess over the holidays for the purposes of recess appointments. But the Senate passed the payroll tax cut extension during that period. Do you think Presidents should dictate when Congress is in session, were these appointments legitimate, and will you go around Congress on future travel weekends?
  5. What provision of the Constitution grants the federal government the authority to require religiously-affiliated groups to pay for contraception in violation of their own moral teachings?
  6. Does China’s decision to boost its defense budget by more than 11% give you any pause about repeatedly slashing our own military capabilities?
  7. Do you regret your administration’s hands-off approach to the Iranian Green Revolution given the country’s increasing belligerence and its continued pursuit of nuclear weapons?
  8. Your administration has no plan to reform unsustainable entitlement programs, according to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. Why haven’t you proposed any real solutions?
  9. You continue to tout an “all of the above” approach to energy policy, but your budget proposal singles out the oil industry for punitive tax hikes, while preserving preferential tax treatment for wind energy, despite the fact that wind energy companies get roughly 100 times the amount in subsidies that oil companies do per kilowatt-hour. Do you believe the playing field should be leveled by eliminating all energy subsidies, or should government continue trying to pick winners and losers?
  10. Have you instructed Attorney General Holder to comply with the congressional subpoena related to the more than 60,000 documents that the Department of Justice has not turned over to House Oversight and Government Reform Committee?
