House Dems Clash on the Free Way

by Tony Perkins: If you're wondering what Washington would look like with a radical liberal in charge, Thursday's House hearing was a pretty good preview. Maybe you're thinking we already know what to expect after eight years of Barack Obama -- but trust us. As bad as the last administration was on religious freedom, those policies would feel like a love pat compared to the army of the new Left.

If there's one thing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has made clear, it's that House Democrats don't want a gavel -- they want an eraser. And the first thing they'd take it to is the U.S. Constitution. For years, liberals tried to play it coy on their ultimate goals. But now that they've gotten a lot of what they wanted out of same-sex marriage, there's no point in hiding the rest of their agenda: destroying religious liberty. And at Thursday's Oversight hearing, Democrats pointed out that they don't take too kindly to the president getting in their way.

"The Trump administration," Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) ranted, is turning the government "into an instrument of hostility towards LGBTQ rights..." Like his colleagues, he can't stand the fact that this president has had the nerve to roll back some of the attacks Obama launched against men and women of faith. It's not that Democrats don't support religious freedom, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) tried to explain, it's just that they don't want people practicing it. If you want to exercise your faith, they argued, do it at church.

They took turns railing against the administration's rules on conscience rights and faith-based protections, calling them an insult to people in the LGBT community. "Religious liberty," the legal director of the Human Rights Campaign testified, "doesn't mean that you get to engage in discrimination." But just because someone doesn't agree with the Left's radical ideas about sex and gender doesn't mean they don't respect the dignity and decency of other people. The White House pointed that out in a statement to the committee, explaining that the president is just trying to "eliminat[e] unfair and unequal treatment by the federal government."

Congressman Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), who's been a huge advocate for leveling the playing field for religious groups, doesn't understand why everyone can't co-exist. "The faith community has deeply-held religious beliefs. The LGBTQ community has deeply-held beliefs. We do not discriminate against those beliefs -- and we say if that's what you choose, fine. All we ask is that [the government doesn't] discriminate against somebody... because they don't hold those same beliefs."

But unfortunately, that's exactly what the government has done. And the people who've suffered, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) points out, aren't the LGBT activists. They're the men and women of faith. "[W]hen Obama was president, [they] became a target. And now that President Trump is in office, he's trying to right the wrong of the Obama administration with respect to faith-based organizations. And the Democrats don't like it. That's what today's hearing was about." To be honest, he said, "Over the last two years, it's just become shocking to me how obsessed the Democrats are with [so-called] LGBTQ rights. And, you know, LGBT individuals have rights just like everyone else has rights. But what the Democrats are trying to do is create new rights, create a special category [that supersedes everyone else's rights]."

And it's creating havoc in medicine, health care, adoption and foster care, even places like homeless shelters. The church can't even have something as simple as a drug rehab program, Rep. Comer said, without committing to an LGBT policy so radical that most of them couldn't agree to. Homeless shelters, he pointed out, can lose their funding if they won't put a biological man in with the other females. "It's ridiculous," Comer argued. "Our founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they knew that that was even a topic of debate in Washington. The president is trying to stop [it]. And the Democrats are crying, "discrimination, discrimination, discrimination' -- and it's not!"

Unfortunately, he warned, "Democrats are going to continue to double down on their assault on religious liberties. And we're going to just have to continue to band together and evangelicals are going to have to continue to be active and informed as far as elections go. And hopefully we can reverse this trend. I think President Trump's gone a long way in reversing some of the excessiveness of the Obama administration. And hopefully we can win this war of ideology, because that's what we're fighting right now in Washington..."

Barr Warns of Erosion of Religion, Centralization of Government, 'Monolithic' Media

Susan Jones
by Susan Jones: "We live at a time when religion, long an essential pillar of our society, is being driven from the public square," Attorney General William Barr told the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville on Wednesday.

"Thank God we have the National Religious Broadcasters to counter that effort. You have boldly shown that media can serve higher ends: the safeguarding of faith as well as the cultivation of the classical virtues of the mind and heart that maintain our republican experiment in self-governance."

In his speech, Barr said religion, decentralized government, and the free press once protected us against majoritarian tyranny, but those three moderating forces have declined in recent decades, resulting in political acrimony and a move toward despotism.

First, Barr noted that the Founders believed religion was "indispensable" to sustaining our free republic.

"How does religion protect against majoritarian tyranny?" Barr asked. He made three points:
-- It put "moral limits" on people with the power to rule.

-- The essence of Christ's message counsels for modesty and restraint in secular politics.

-- Religion tempers political acrimony by making clear that what happens here on earth is only transient, not eternal.
"Unfortunately," Barr said, "this vital moderating force in our society has declined over the past several decades. In recent years, we have seen the steady erosion of religion and its benevolent influence."

Barr turned next to the decentralization of government power as a vital check on despotism:

"The federal government was supposed to be a government of limited powers," he noted, but that is no longer the case. "As a result, the federal government is now directly governing the country as one monolithic entity with over 300 million people."

Barr used abortion as an example:

"When you take a controversial issue about which there are passionate views on both sides, such as abortion, and say we are going to have one rule nationwide, it is a recipe for bitter conflict over that rule...The result is our current acrimonious politics."

Barr said we have lost "real diversity" in this country, "where communities can coexist and adopt different approaches to things. That, too, erodes an important check on despotism."

And finally, Barr turned to freedom of the press as a necessary -- but now deficient -- check on despotism:

"In 19th-century America, the press was so fragmented that the power of any one organ was small. The multiplicity of newspapers, even in one city, cultivated a wide variety of views and localized opinion," Barr said.

But times have changed:

Today in the United States, the corporate – or “mainstream” – press is massively consolidated. And it has become remarkably monolithic in viewpoint, at the same time that an increasing number of journalists see themselves less as objective reporters of the facts, and more as agents of change. These developments have given the press an unprecedented ability to mobilize a broad segment of the public on a national scale and direct that opinion in a particular direction.

When the entire press “advances along the same track,” as Tocqueville put it, the relationship between the press and the energized majority becomes mutually reinforcing. Not only does it become easier for the press to mobilize a majority, but the mobilized majority becomes more powerful and overweening with the press as its ally.

This is not a positive cycle, and I think it is fair to say that it puts the press’ role as a breakwater for the tyranny of the majority in jeopardy. The key to restoring the press in that vital role is to cultivate a greater diversity of voices in the media.
Barr said this is where religious broadcasters come in:

"You are one of the last holdouts in the consolidation of organs and viewpoints of the press. It is, therefore, essential that you continue your work and continue to supply the people with diverse, divergent perspectives on the news of the day. And in this secular age, it is especially vital that your religious perspective is voiced."

Barr told the gathering, "We need to support local journalism and local voices, and each of you needs to continue the great work you are doing."

Barr's full speech can be found here.

Asking the Right Questions about Coronavirus

by Newt Gingrich: After listening to the Democrats attack President Trump and smear Vice President Pence over the coronavirus, it hit me that it is vital for Republicans to focus on the virus – specifically its challenges to human health, jobs, and the economy.

There is a real temptation to descend to the level of the left’s dishonest, false, and often vicious attacks about the Trump Administration’s response to the potential pandemic. However, that would be exactly the wrong reaction.

Just as the contrast between President Trump in India and the pathetic South Carolina debate emphasized the stature difference between the president as a world leader and a group of noisy, desperate politicians, there is an opportunity for the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans to demonstrate patriotism, seriousness and focusing on solving real problems for real people.

The contrast between bitterly partisan, negative, and divisive Democrats like Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the serious, focused effort of President Trump and Vice President Pence is important. It can go a long way toward convincing the country that there is a serious, problem-solving Republican Party and a petty, divisive Democratic Party.

There are serious questions that need answering. We need certainty about the health aspects of the coronavirus. We also need to understand the implications of the collapse of the Chinese economy and its ability to undermine the world logistics system and damage other economies, including our own.

First, let’s look at the health aspects of coronavirus.

I was fortunate to do a Newt’s World episode on February 9 with one of the great experts on viruses, Dr. Tony Fauci. He is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. During our discussion, Dr. Fauci, who had been one of the heroic figures in breaking through on HIV/Aids in the 1980s, outlined the sound scientific approach to thinking through a potential viral epidemic or pandemic. I recommend it as excellent background material.

We must continue to monitor people who come to the United States. It is clear that President Trump’s decision to implement travel restrictions has reduced the threat of importing coronavirus and kept the United States safer.

One key concern is to develop new capabilities for early detection of the virus, so people can easily distinguish the common cold, the ordinary flu, and coronavirus.

Another key concern is to increase the number of medicines which can be used to heal a person if they do become infected. Timely health care intervention seems to have a dramatic impact on survival rates. Some of the Chinese death rates may have been a function of inadequate treatments – especially for the elderly. (There are reports of substantial fatality rates among some nursing homes in Wuhan for example.) Also, we need to figure out why some people who appear to be recovering from the virus begin to relapse.

There is a substantial effort underway to develop a vaccine. This is important because we must consider the real possibility that coronavirus will behave like the regular flu and disappear in warm weather and reappear in the fall. There is a real possibility that sometime next year we will have a vaccine just as we vaccinate against the common flu.

Ironically, it is the expertise of the pharmaceutical industry which is being brought to bear to potentially save millions – and even tens of millions of lives. The next time you hear the American pharmaceutical industry attacked, you might remember how vital it is when we need it. Proposals which would undermine and even destroy our research capabilities are proposals which will cost millions of lives in the future.

America has the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the finest epidemiological center in the world. We have in the National Institutes of Health, the largest and most capable biological research system in the world. It is at times like this that our investment in these capabilities is seen as truly vital and wise.

A key question is how much we will need to spend to accelerate research and moving treatments from the laboratory to your medicine cabinet. Some Food and Drug Administration protocols and regulations may need to be revised to maximize the rate of getting the new drugs to the patients who will need them.

Finally, we have to examine thoroughly local public health plans. When San Francisco announces a public health emergency before a single case has been reported in the city, some tough questions need to be asked. In a city which has thousands of homeless people living on the street – and in which the district attorney has announced he will not prosecute public defecation and urination – how would you quarantine homeless people if they became infected. San Francisco is faced with an impossible dilemma: Take the virus seriously and change the pattern of disease breeding lack of law, or accept that there is a large vulnerable population on the streets who would be very susceptible to an epidemic.

Beyond health issues we also must confront the danger to our economy the Chinese meltdown is posing. There are a surprising number of medicines, face masks, syringes, and other medical supplies which come from China. There are a significant number of American companies who will have their production disrupted because they rely on Chinese parts in the logistics chain.

One step toward recognizing how unhealthy our reliance on Chinese production is would be to create a one-time tax credit for insourcing production which has been outsourced to China. We might well convince a substantial number of companies to bring their production home to the United States now that the precariousness of the Chinese system is so obvious.

If we approach the challenge of the coronavirus as serious adults, there is no reason to believe we can’t solve both the health and the economic problems.

More Hate, We Have A Winner, Bloomberg & The Mosque

Gary Bauer
by Gary Bauer, Contributing Author: More Hate
As I noted earlier this week, the left has nothing to offer on the coronavirus debate but hate and vitriol. The Trump Administration is calling the shots, not Chuck Schumer, not Nancy Pelosi, not the New York Times.

Of course, that's not stopping the left from carping, complaining and offering unsolicited advice. But their progressive prescriptions are absurd. For example:
  • CNN complained about the racial makeup of the administration's coronavirus task force. Just more evidence of how far the "woke" left has strayed from Martin Luther King's dream that we should judge people not based on the color of their skin but on their abilities and the content of their character.
  • MSNBC is fretting about xenophobia. The left-wing media outlet Vox lectured us on "the history of racism and 'cleanliness.'"
  • "Meet The Press" host Chuck Todd suggested that Trump is to blame for the coronavirus panic, saying, "You reap what you sow." In Todd's twisted mind, there is panic because no one trusts the government to handle the crisis because Trump has attacked and undermined our vital institutions. Again, this is total nonsense. The Deep State has been doing its best to attack and undermine Trump since before he was elected.
  • Meanwhile, the left can barely contain its glee over the fear currently roiling the financial markets. It's not surprising. They don't have much to run on.
Their radical policies – open borders, abortion on demand, free healthcare for illegal aliens and much more – are tremendously unpopular.

Their candidates are not compelling.

Their convention could turn into a civil war.

But they're just giddy about coronavirus!

By the way, Democrats have repeatedly complained in recent days that Trump cut the budgets of critical health-related agencies. This charge came up several times during the South Carolina Democrat debate. The only problem is that it is false.

An Associated Press fact check found that while Trump's budgets have proposed certain cuts, Congress ignored them and actually increased funding. "The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aren't suffering from budget cuts that never took effect."

The Associated Press also rejected Chuck Todd's claims that Trump has undermined the government's response, writing:

"The public health system has a playbook to follow for pandemic preparation — regardless of who's president. . . Those plans were put into place in anticipation of another flu pandemic, but are designed to work for any respiratory-borne disease."

We Have A Winner!
After 25 days and a partial recount, we finally have a declared winner in the Iowa Democrat caucuses. In a statement yesterday, the Iowa Democrat Party declared, "The recount process resulted in no change to the National Delegate allocation."

Translation: Pete Buttigieg wins and will receive 14 delegates. Bernie Sanders finished second and gets 12 delegates.

Except that the Associated Press isn't buying it. While acknowledging that the results will be certified Saturday, the Associated Press declared that it will not call a winner due to "remaining concerns about whether the results as reported by the party are fully accurate."

In related news, new polling shows Bernie Sanders with big leads over his closest competitors in upcoming Super Tuesday states. For example:
  • Sanders is up 17 points over Elizabeth Warren in California (34% to 17%).
  • He's up 12 points over Warren in Colorado (27% to 15%).
  • He's is up nine points over Joe Biden in Virginia (28% to 19%).
  • And Sanders (26%) is up six points over Biden (20%) and Bloomberg (20%) in Texas.
Bloomberg & The Mosque
I've heard some people suggest that Michael Bloomberg is the "moderate" in the Democrat race, primarily because he's defending capitalism and calling out Sanders's socialism. That doesn't make him moderate.

Bloomberg is promoting a host of big government solutions and always sides with the radical left in the culture wars. From banning guns to Big Gulps, Bloomberg is anything but moderate. He's a left-wing elitist who thinks he knows best how to run your life.

If you need any more evidence, let's go back a few years to the great national debate over the proposed Ground Zero mosque.

A CBS News poll found that 71% of Americans opposed the construction of a mosque just two blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks, where 3,000 Americans were murdered by radical Islamic supremacists. Many 9/11 families led protests against the mosque.

But Bloomberg aggressively defended the Ground Zero mosque when he was mayor of New York City. At the time he said, "I think it's fair to say if somebody was going to try, on that piece of property, to build a church or a synagogue, nobody would be yelling and screaming."

Could you be more tone deaf?!

Actually, there was a church even closer to Ground Zero that was trying to rebuild, and it spent years fighting Bloomberg's bureaucrats.

And Bloomberg is still unapologetic about his support for the Ground Zero mosque. In fact, he's campaigning on it, even tweeting about it this week.

By the way, another great American stepped up at the time, hoping to resolve the dispute over the mosque. His name was Donald Trump.

Trump offered to buy out the mosque's investors, and he even offered a very generous 25% premium, in order to "end a very serious, inflammatory, and highly divisive situation."

Democrats Demand Open Borders for the Coronavirus . . .

. . . Their only hope for victory is infecting America.
by Daniel Greenfield: Over 90 Chinese migrants were caught by the Border Patrol trying to enter the United States this year.

According to Brandon Judd, the president of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), on February 10, three Chinese nationals were apprehended illegally entering Texas with flu-like symptoms, and had to be quarantined. "Luckily they did not have the coronavirus," he said. "But this is a wake-up call."

Border Patrol personnel have been handed respirators and told to isolate the large number of Chinese migrants who are continuing to illegally enter the United States.

According to Todd Bensman of the Middle East Forum, his source in the Border Patrol told him that, “What we cannot ascertain is if they are isolated until they come back negative. A lot of that is 'medical' and some managers treat it like it's personal information. So we are not privy to the results of where they go after."

We know that some of the CDC test kits meant to detect the coronavirus were flawed. It’s possible that migrants carrying the coronavirus have not been properly detected and may be spreading it even now.

Illegal migration from China through the Mexican border rose significantly toward the end of last year, increasing fivefold from October to the end of January, compared to the entire previous fiscal year.

And those are the migrants that the Border Patrol had successfully intercepted. There’s no way to know how many got through. The human smugglers are clever and determined. And anyone who is infected might be desperate enough to try to enter the United States in search of superior medical care.

A few months ago, Border Patrol officers intercepted eleven Chinese migrants at the border hiding inside a washing machine, and a dresser, along with other pieces of furniture inside a moving truck. A month earlier, six Chinese migrants had been caught hiding inside the fake wall of another truck.

And it’s not just by land. In December, a boat tried to smuggle two Chinese nationals into California.

It’s also not just China. As the coronavirus spreads to other countries, outbreaks are popping up in South Korea and Iran. The expansion of the scope of the outbreak means that migrants from more countries pose a potentially deadly risk. The first coronavirus case has just emerged in Latin America.

It’s unlikely that it will be the last.

California is already monitoring 8,400 people for the coronavirus, with 33 known cases, including one that occurred among the general public, resulting in the quarantine of 100 health care workers.

The last thing that the border states need are infected illegal aliens coming through, blending into the population, and spreading the disease to health care workers, and in poor neighborhoods.

But that’s exactly what the Democrats seem to want.

Senator Elizabeth Warren announced that she was introducing a plan to redirect money from the border wall to fighting the coronavirus. Rarely has there been so literal an example of drilling a hole in the boat and then bailing water faster. And while Warren is an extreme case, every Democrat 2020 candidate wants to dismantle border security and enable the rapid entry of migrants into the United States.

That means putting Americans at risk, not just at the border, but also at airports and seaports.

Warren had called for replacing ICE with "something that reflects our values” and infects us with their diseases. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Mayor Bill de Blasio have called for abolishing ICE. Senator Bernie Sanders, as the most radical candidate, wants to abolish ICE, CBP, and stop deportations.

Bernie’s call to abolish the Border Patrol would create open borders for drug cartels, smugglers, murderers, rapists, and any migrants infected with the coronavirus, not to mention other diseases.

Sanders, Steyer, Bloomberg, and Warren all oppose any further border fencing. But Sanders has gone the furthest by essentially calling for an end to immigration enforcement. “Immigration is not a threat to national security,” he insists. The coronavirus once again demonstrates that’s a dangerous delusion.

Imagining a world without borders is also envisioning a world of defenseless nations and peoples. Borders are the immune system of nations. Without an immune system, the body cannot survive. And without borders, a nation cannot exist. Illegal migration is a disease attacking our national body. The Democrats who champion open borders and attack CBP are the disease destroying our immunity.

Border security is the cure.

As nations around the world rally to secure their borders against coronavirus migrants, the Democrats still insist on chanting the mantra of open borders. At the Democrat debate in South Carolina, Senator Amy Klobuchar refused to say that she would close the border to stop the spread of the virus.

None of the CBS moderators asked the candidates about using border security to stop infected aliens.

And none of the Democrats mentioned border security, instead pivoting to calls for more funding. Like Warren, they want to drill a bunch of holes in the boat, and then spend money to bail out the water.

President Trump had asked for $2.5 billion in coronavirus funding. The Democrats want as much as $8.5 billion, with Senator Schumer demanding a $2 billion piggy bank for the states and cities to raid.

Meanwhile those same politicians are determined to starve CBP of the funds it desperately needs. They would rather plow endless billions into an emergency that their own dereliction of duty created than spend a lot less to prevent the spread of the coronavirus to the United States in the first place.

The cynical truth behind this gambit is that funneling money into health organizations builds up the political organizations and infrastructure of the Democrats, while border security is Republican.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), which represents NIH personnel, among many others in the gargantuan portfolio of the country's largest federal union, endorsed Hillary Clinton. Meanwhile the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), which is a subsidiary of the mega-union, endorsed Donald J. Trump. As did the ICE Council.

When replying to AFGE’s questionnaire about overtime pay for ICE and Border Patrol personnel, Senator Elizabeth Warren instead ranted that she would destroy ICE and CPB and focus on stopping counterfeit goods. Democrats, like Warren, care more about protecting fashion brands than stopping a pandemic.

They care more about protecting their political power through open borders than protecting Americans.

Even as the Democrats and their media allies whip up a panic and attempt to blame the coronavirus on President Trump, they continue undermining our front line of defense and our national security.

The Democrats want open borders for drug cartels, human traffickers, and the coronavirus. And if the outbreak and its financial repercussions improves their political prospects, then it’s a win-win situation.

When the coronavirus spreads, when our economy shakes, then the Democrats win.

And that’s how the Democrats became the party of the coronavirus. Their political future is tied to the disease. They’re attacking our immune system because their only hope for victory is infecting America.

Trump: Pelosi Creating Virus 'Panic' For Political Gain

President Donald Trump addresses his administration's
response to the coronavirus at a Feb. 26 press conference.
by Free Press International News Service: Russia was a hoax, impeachment an embarrassment, and they are heading toward nominating a socialist who praises re-education camps in Cuba as their presidential nominee.

So, what is the next move for the Democrats and their corporate media allies?

Weaponizing the coronavirus for political gain, President Donald Trump said on Wednesday.

During a press conference in which he detailed the U.S. response to the virus, Trump addressed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s criticism of his administration’s handling of the virus.

“I’m just saying, we should all be working together. She’s trying to create a panic, and there’s no reason to panic because we have done so good,” Trump said.

The president added: “All they’re trying to do is get a political advantage. This isn’t about political advantage. We’re all trying to do the right thing. They shouldn’t be saying, ‘This is terrible. President Trump isn’t asking for enough money.’ How stupid a thing to say? If they want to give us more money, well that’s OK, we’ll take more money … but they shouldn’t demean the people on the stage that are the finest in the world. They’re not demeaning me. They’re demeaning the greatest health care professionals in the world.”

Trump reassured Americans that his administration was prepared for the spread of the coronavirus in the United States “if” it spread further in the country.

“We are ready to adapt and we’re ready to do whatever we have to as the disease spreads, if it spreads,” Trump said.

During her Wednesday broadcast, Fox News host Laura Ingraham commented: "The facts don't matter to the Trump haters. They learn from the 'never let a crisis go to waste' philosophy of Rahm Emanuel, that many of them are frankly so sick with their anti-Trump fever that they actually consider this virus a political godsend," Ingraham said, referring to the Democratic former mayor of Chicago.

"The 2020 Democrats, on the other hand, are either hoping for misery or actually peddling it," Ingraham said. "None of the candidates have an answer to Trump's booming economy. So they pretend, as they did in last night's debate, that Americans really aren't better off at all."

During the Wednesday press conference, a media personality asked Trump: “What is your response to Speaker Pelosi, who said earlier today you don’t know what you’re talking about about the coronavirus? I’m also wondering if you’d want to address critics who say you can’t be trusted about what your administration is saying?”

Trump responded: “I think Speaker Pelosi is incompetent. She lost the Congress once. I think she’s going to lose it again. She lifted my poll numbers up 10 points. I never thought I would see that so quickly and so easily. I’m leading everybody. We’re doing great. I don’t want to do it that way. It’s almost unfair if you think about it. But I think she’s incompetent and I think she’s not thinking about the country.

“Instead of making a statement like that where I’ve been beating her routinely at everything, instead of making a statement like that, she should be saying we have to work together because we have a big problem potentially, and maybe it’s going to be a very little problem. I hope that it’s going to be a very little problem, but we have to work together. Instead, she wants to do the same thing with Crying Chuck Schumer. He goes out and says the president only asks for $2.5 billion. He should have $8.5 billion. This is the first time I’ve ever been told we should take more. Usually, it’s we have to take less. We should be working together. He shouldn’t be making statements like that because it’s so bad for the country.”

The president continued: “Nancy Pelosi, she should go back to her district, clean it up.”

Socialism 101 Refresher

. . . If you want to know whether Bernie Sanders's plans are good, ask those in Vietnam.
by Roger Helle: It was 31 years ago I found myself sitting with a hero of the Communist Revolution in Vietnam. She was also one of the founders of the National Liberation Front (NLF), a.k.a. the Viet Cong — the insurgency in South Vietnam. Her story was shocking and a reminder to all how socialism always produces more than promised. Just not for good.

A medical doctor, she was in charge of the largest pediatric hospital in Saigon. She and her husband were politically connected and knew our ambassador as well as Gen. William Westmoreland. But they were communist. When the Tet Offensive was launched in 1969, their identity became known. While the offensive was a failure, our media gave the communists a media victory. Their cover blown, they fled to the jungle.

In 1975, after our politicians abandoned South Vietnam, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) overran the country, “liberating” the people of the South. The victory was glorious … until it wasn’t. Former soldiers, politicians, and wealthy businessmen were rounded up and sent to “re-education camps.” Hundreds of thousands died in those labor camps. It was horrific, but Cambodia was worse. Possibly two million may have died under the regime of Pol Pot.

As our new friend told us her story, it included being sent to prison! Why would a hero of the revolution be sent to prison? After the communists took over, the result was not what they were told would happen. They fought for unification of their country, but they obtained a brutal dictatorial regime. When she spoke out about the victors abusing their power, plundering their vanquished foes for their own benefit, she was sent to prison.

The public outcry over her imprisonment resulted in her release sooner than most political prisoners. But not before her health was destroyed — she never fully recovered and died early of heart problems developed in prison. She was not the only one I met. I would meet and befriend a number of former Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers who were imprisoned for speaking out on the abuse of power by NVA leaders.

We’ve all heard it before: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely!” This is the history of socialism. What’s the difference between socialism and communism? About 10 years.

Bernie Sanders, who honeymooned in the former Soviet Union with his current wife, praised Hugo Chavez, who destroyed one of the most prosperous countries in South America. Bernie thought Fidel Castro was a great leader. Bernie could have corrected this but on “60 Minutes” this past week he praised Fidel’s literacy program. I guess that cancels out his imprisoning more people per capita than any other dictator.

Bernie is successful because he stirs up greed, envy, and entitlement in young people. “Others have more than you and that’s not right!” How do you do that? It’s easier when a generation has never been taught what’s good in America. We are evil and racist and others have more than you, so that’s not right. Bernie, a millionaire, owns three homes and has never held a regular job in his life — he has lived off of taxpayers. Greed and envy of others seems to be working. But be careful of what you wish for. Ask the people of any communist country who will never know the Liberty we have in America.

Something to think about?

Stop, Question and Frisk

Dr. Walter E. Williams
by Dr. Walter E. Williams: Before former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg threw his hat into the 2020 presidential race, he defended the New York Police Department’s use of “stop, question and frisk” policing. At a United States Naval Academy’s 2019 Leadership Conference, Bloomberg said, “We focused on keeping kids from going through the correctional system … kids who walked around looking like they might have a gun, remove the gun from their pockets and stop it.” He claimed that as a result of his policy, New York’s murder rate fell from 650 a year to 300 the year he left office.

In the cases of Terry v. Ohio, Sibron v. New York, and Peters v. New York, the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1968, granted limited approval to officers to stop, question and frisk, even though they lacked probable cause for an arrest, if the officer believed the subject to be dangerous. The Court’s decision made suspicion of danger to an officer grounds for a “reasonable search.”

The stop, question and frisk policy has taken on racial overtones because most of the people stopped are black men. Let’s look at the numbers.

Last year, NYPD data showed that 93% of suspects arrested for murder were black or Hispanic. Ninety-six percent of those nabbed in shootings were also minorities.

Eighty-eight percent of New York City’s homicide victims were black or Hispanic as were 96% of shooting victims.

While these percentages have been roughly the same for decades, New York police have brought the absolute number of crimes, including homicides, way down from its 1990 peak at 2,245 to 289 homicides in 2018. Since blacks and Hispanics are the major victims of homicide, as a result of the NYPD’s proactive response to crime, possibly tens of thousands of blacks are living today who would otherwise be dead.

For a law-abiding black person to be stopped, questioned and frisked — in a word or two, be racially profiled — is truly insulting. However, to analyze the policy, let’s look at the origins of racial profiling or any other kind of profiling. First of all, policemen are neither mind readers nor are they equipped with X-ray vision. That means good policing requires learning how to use an easily observed physical characteristic as a guess or proxy for some other difficult-to-observe characteristic. Thus, the reason people profile is that information is costly and they seek methods to economize on information costs. One way to do that is through profiling.

The reality is that race and other behavioral characteristics are correlated, including criminal behavior. That fact does not dispel the insult, embarrassment, anger and hurt a law-abiding black person might feel when being stopped by police, being watched in stores, being passed by taxi drivers, standing at traffic lights and hearing car door locks activated or being refused delivery by merchants who fear for their safety in his neighborhood.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a politician in pursuit of his own agenda. President Donald Trump is also a politician in pursuit of his own agenda. Both will deny their support for and talk down the policy of stop, question and frisk in an effort to curry favor with black voters. Most Bloomberg and Trump supporters don’t live under the horrible conditions that so many blacks live under in high crime cities like Baltimore, St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit.

Black people must ask what needs to be done to stop criminals from preying on them and making so many of their communities economic wastelands. If stop, question and frisk can contribute to that goal, so be it. They need not listen to politicians, academics, talking heads on the news and others.

I’ll add that even if the police, intimidated by leftists, are not doing their job to safeguard black residents in high crime communities, that doesn’t mean that black people should not organize to take independent measures to protect themselves.

Coronavirus Crisis Is Trump’s Time to Lead

by Patrick Buchanan: The chickens of globalization are coming home to roost.

Not until well into the Democratic debate Tuesday night did the COVID-19 coronavirus come up, and it was Mike Bloomberg, not a CBS moderator, who raised it:

“The president fired the pandemic specialist in this country two years ago,” the former New York mayor said. “There’s nobody here to figure out what the hell we should be doing. And he’s defunded the CDC.”

Not 24 hours later, President Donald Trump, home from India, was in the White House briefing room, flanked by the nation’s foremost health experts, deputizing Vice President Mike Pence to head the task force to lead America’s battle against the spreading disease.

Yet, by Thursday noon, the Dow Jones average was down 3,000 points on the week, a 10% plunge from its recent all-time high.

Trillions of dollars in equity value had been wiped out. The great bull market of the Trump presidency may be history.

Though only 60 Americans are known to have been infected, and none has yet died, fear has begun to grip the nation as well as the world. Yet, as of now, the numbers don’t justify the emotion.

The death toll as of Thursday was 2,800, out of 82,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide. The great majority of these are in China, where the virus originated, though the disease has spread to every continent, with Italy and South Korea the hardest hit outside of China.

Whatever happens medically — the mortality rate of the virus is between 2 and 3% — it’s hard to see how the world averts a recession if COVID-19 is not soon contained and controlled.

Already, Democrats are piling on Trump for cutting funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and failing to reflect the seriousness of the threat. And the issue does present a challenge to Trump’s presidency. His handling of it may determine his stature as chief executive.

Yet the issue is also tailor-made for Trump.

First, the disease comes out of Xi Jinping’s China, not Trump’s USA.

Second, the president occupies what Theodore Roosevelt called the “bully pulpit,” the White House. He can use that pulpit daily to command the airwaves and inform, lead, unite and direct the nation during what could be a months-long crisis. And Trump alone has the power to declare a national emergency, should that be needed.

If Trump acts as a leader, urging unity in the struggle to contain the virus and discover a vaccine, the hectoring from the Democratic left, already begun, can come to be seen as unpatriotic.

Also, Trump’s probable opponent this fall, who would be in charge of preventing the coronavirus from spreading like the Spanish Flu of 1918-19, is Bernie Sanders. And what are Sanders’ credentials and plans?

Under “Medicare for All,” Sanders intends to nationalize the entire U.S. heath care system and abolish the private health insurance plans of 140 million Americans who now depend on them.

As for the pharmaceutical industry, uniquely situated to assist in the crash effort to find a cure for the coronavirus, Sanders will confiscate its profits and put those profiteers out of business.

Still, given the alarming news coming from countries all over the globe, there is a risk that by November, the U.S. and the world may have tumbled into a recession. Airlines are already canceling flights to and from Asia. Cruise ships are pulling into ports and off-loading passengers. Travel and tourism are suffering terribly. Schools are closing.

Chinese factories that produce essential parts for factories and finished products in the U.S., Europe and Asia are shutting down. Supply chains are being severed. Shortages are cropping up.

The Japanese are talking of canceling the Olympics. If the virus spreads here, the question arises: Will our two parties still hold their nominating conventions this summer in Milwaukee and Charlotte?

The chickens of globalization are coming home to roost.

In recent decades, America’s economic and political elites of both parties surrendered America’s economic independence for globalism, a new interdependence of nations, where we Americans no longer rely on ourselves alone for the vital necessities of our national life.

That decision is now being exposed as the folly against which Hamilton and economic nationalists always warned.

According to The Washington Post, critical ingredients of medicines and drugs, upon which many American lives depend, are made in Chinese factories now in danger of being shut down.

In the ongoing struggle between nationalism and globalism, the globalists are taking a beating. Like the Chinese and Japanese and Koreans, Americans are not going to be looking to the WHO or U.N. to ensure their health, but to their own nation-states. And if a pandemic threatens, transnationalism’s “open borders” ideology is not a policy that will bring universal acclamation.

Like Trump’s America, all nations, in this crisis, are going to put their own people first. As they should.

Violence is Declining

by Kerby Anderson: Even though there is lots of evidence that violence is declining, many people don’t believe it. On my radio program, we have documented that the violent crime rate has dropped significantly over the last few decades. And if you want a longer look at the decline in violence over millennia, you could pick up the 2011 book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, by Steven Pinker.

Apparently, many people don’t believe it. That is why he spends a few pages in his 2018 book, Enlightenment Now, trying to answer some of the skeptical comments and questions. Here are a few of his responses.

Some wonder how you can say violence has decreased when we hear about school shootings and terrorist bombings. He points out that decline is not the same thing as disappearance. Something can decrease quite a bit without vanishing altogether. The best way to examine the level of violence is to look at the level today and compare it to the level in the past.

Others argue that all of these statistics mean nothing if you are one of the victims. That is certainly true. But it also means that you are less likely to be a victim. All the stories about civil wars, terrorist attacks, and other examples of violence make us feel like the world is more dangerous than it was in the past.

He has even heard people charge him with being naïve, sentimental, idealistic, and romantic because he says violence has gone down. He merely says, look at the data. To look at the data and still say that violence has gone up is delusional. To ignore the data and say that violence has gone up is to be a know-nothing.

This discussion about violence is yet another reminder that there is often a major difference between perception and reality. That is why we need to do good research and exercise discernment.

Chinese Reds Set a Trap for Trump

by Cliff Kincaid: President Trump is in a difficult situation. If he were to disclose circumstantial evidence that the coronavirus virus is a Chinese bioweapon, there would be calls for retaliation against the Communist regime.

Such a declaration could lead to more fear, the threat of war, and perhaps a global economic collapse. As it is, the virus is causing a market meltdown. He does not want to contribute to a panic and further collapse.

Politically, his reelection hangs in the balance.

Aside from Senator Tom Cotton, China experts such as Steven Mosher and Gordon Chang, and the newspaper The Epoch Times, few people in politics or the media are asking the hard questions about whether the virus is a weapon of war.

But the evidence is available for those who take the time to review the facts.

Also known as COVID-19, it is considered by many at this point to be just another mystery disease like the flu-like virus SARS, which also originated in China. But the number of deaths from the coronavirus has already surpassed the fatalities from the SARS outbreak. It appears to have a higher mortality rate than the flu.

What's more, a controversial but disputed scientific report indicates that the coronavirus has elements of HIV, the virus causing AIDS. This suggests it was engineered.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is ocated in the city where the virus is said to have originated. The institute claims to be committed to "effectively improving our [China's] defense and resilience towards biological wars and terrorist attacks." Hence, it has a military orientation.

The official Chinese propaganda organ, Xinhuanet, ran a story headlined "China slams conspiracy theories about COVID-19 virus." At a so-called news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said, "The WHO [UN's World Health Organization] has said repeatedly there is no evidence that COVID-19 was engineered in a laboratory or created by the manufacture of biological weapons." But nearly everyone agrees that China's role in the outbreak has been characterized by lies and cover-ups. And the WHO's role in "containing" the virus has been widely viewed as deferential to China. The UN bureaucracy moved too slowly.

Yet the WHO admits, "Any infectious agents or toxic chemical could in theory be engineered for deliberate use as a weapon."

The official Chinese line at first was that the virus came from wildlife and it closed the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan city on January 1 for "environmental sanitation and disinfection." Later, a Chinese outlet claimed the virus came from a "patient zero" character who emerged out of nowhere last November.

To add more mystery, last October the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security hosted a fictional coronavirus pandemic exercise called Event 201 with the World Economic Forum and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "Experts agree that it is only a matter of time before one of these epidemics becomes global – a pandemic with potentially catastrophic consequences," the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security said. Gates is a big funder of the UN, its World Health Organization, and HIV/AIDS vaccine research.

While some so-called "experts" are claiming the Trump Administration is unprepared, Trump is relying on these same experts to contain and solve the problem. The Wuhan Institute of Virology maintains partnerships with such governmental organizations as the National Institutes of Health in the United States and the WHO.

What's more, several of the Chinese lab directors were educated in the United States and specialize in emerging diseases and genetic engineering. Research fields include "HIV, influenza virus, hepatitis virus, tumor virus and zoonotic virus and virus replication and antiviral drugs etc." This sounds impressive but the lab is an integral part of the Chinese Communist medical establishment and subservient to the state.

In another strange development, American biopharmaceutical company Gilead had applied back in 2016 for a Chinese patent on the use of the antiviral drug Remdesivir against coronaviruses. The Wuhan Institute of Virology had also applied for its own Chinese patent on a copy of the drug.

It appears that China was considering the idea that profits could be made from a coronavirus outbreak and that it was trying to profit from the work already done by an American company. A compromise is reportedly being talked about so that pharmaceutical companies in both countries can make billions.

Even if we assume the leak of the virus was accidental and not deliberate, the world is still at the mercy of China, where it originated, and thousands if not millions could die. This makes China complicit in what are called crimes against humanity.

Commentators trying to play down the threat ignore the fact that scandals of this kind involving China have already occurred. One of the most notorious cases was contaminated Chinese-made heparin, a blood-thinning agent, which claimed at least 81 lives in the United States in 2007 and 2008.

The 2014 report of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission found that Baxter International, Inc., the U.S. company selling the heparin product, "relied on a long and complex supply chain for the active ingredient that led back to China. Somewhere in that upstream supply chain, someone deliberately inserted over-sulfated chondroitin sulfate, a counterfeit and toxic ingredient, for crude heparin." The commission declared that the absence of checks and balances in China's system "makes it difficult to hold manufacturers and officials accountable" and that China "never accepted that the contaminated drug caused the deaths associated with Baxter's products in the United States."

In regard to the coronavirus, the American liberal media echo the official Chinese government claim that "experts" dismiss the idea that it was created by scientists and that any views to the contrary are conspiracies. Yet, in the case of SARS, it was later acknowledged that the virus had "escaped" from another Chinese lab. Our media do not want to hold China responsible for what emerged from their own territory.

The Trump Administration has appointed an HIV/AIDS expert, Dr. Deborah L. Birx, as the Coronavirus Response Coordinator. "She has developed and patented vaccines, including leading one of the most influential HIV vaccine trials in history," the White House noted. Dr. Birx was originally confirmed under President Obama as director of the U.S. Global HIV/AIDS Office.

These credentials seem impressive. But HIV/AIDS vaccines have been in human trials since President Clinton in 1987 promised to make the creation and use of an AIDS vaccine "a national mission." Today, however, there is no vaccine available that will prevent HIV infection or treat those who have HIV or AIDS. Billions of dollars have been wasted on failed HIV/AIDS vaccine research.

The Democrats in Congress are now rushing to pour billions of more taxpayer dollars into development of a potentially risky coronavirus vaccine, when it should be holding hearings on American involvement with the Chinese military-industrial-medical complex and whether sanctions should be imposed on the communist regime for threatening global health.

With a coronavirus vaccine under development that could make billions of dollars for Chinese or American companies, the nature of the virus takes on immense importance. If it indeed has elements of HIV, the "solution" to what appears to be shaping up as a pandemic could be a mandatory and potentially dangerous vaccine. Scientific papers openly discuss the prospect of a "coronavirus-based HIV multigene vaccine."

All of this could do even more harm, as some vaccines rushed into production have backfired. A scientific paper by attorney Walter Kyle documented how contaminated polio vaccines may have led to cancers and AIDS in humans.

Keep an eye on those "experts," Mr. President.

Private Hell

by Mario Murillo Ministries: Vast swathes of the church still bring up his past. A few who are wearing tinfoil hats call him a devil. Clueless preachers still won’t take a stand. He goes through hell every day protecting the American church and they repay him with indifference.

I am sure that he would make me take down this blog if he could. How I know that, is my business. He doesn’t want the church to know how our ingratitude hurts and baffles him. Obama silenced pastors and yet many pastors still love Obama. Meanwhile, Trump fought for and won free speech in the pulpit—free speech that is being used by many to castigate the very person who restored that right.

But no matter how much I am attacked for supporting him, I will not turn my back on President Trump. Because of his policies, I have been able to win more souls and preach with greater freedom. The President is standing up for our ministry and he is standing up for you, as well.

You lefties need to save your strength. Nothing you say is going to change my mind.

Now, I have a burning question for the church: Have you seen the chilling video of Lance Wallnau relating the prophetic warning Trump gave to Evangelical leaders? Our President found out what the Democrats plan to do to Christians if they win the White House and retake the Senate. He took the time to gather church leaders and to warn them.
The Left will go after the church with a vengeance because they think the church helped Trump. Embarrassingly, that is a false accusation since the church at large really hasn’t done much to help him. Nothing like they could have. Now because of apathy, Trump’s hard won protections can be frittered away. The President’s description of the Left’s hatred for the church and their plans for us is chilling.

Informed sources say, radicals will be bolder to assault conservatives and Christians. Social media would tear off its mask and openly persecute the church.

Yeah, I’m angry! Donald Trump and his family have endured excruciating suffering so that we could do something as simple and easy as voting and challenging other Christians from our pulpits to get out and vote. AND WE STILL CAN’T BRING OURSELVES TO DO SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS THAT?

It is jaw-dropping how oblivious many believers are about this moment in time in which they are living. Trump is a divine disruption—a merciful pause button to give the church a chance to keep America from going off the cliff of Socialism. So far, most people in the church have done little to act on this mercy, let alone appreciate it! But I thank God for my President!

And what has the church done to repay Trump for the silent, nameless agony he suffers daily on our behalf? Many reward him with apathy, ingratitude, disrespect, slander, and abandonment. My friend, we are about to pay an incalculable price if we don’t get a right view of this hour.

I am sorry to say this, but Satan has seduced many preachers who head personal empires and oversee independent kingdoms. At such a critical hour as this, they will still not come together in unity to speak to the nation with one voice. Because they are protecting their own private little empires, they can’t afford to offend their congregation. Little do they realize this: if the Left gets its way, they will have no empire to defend and no nation to pass on to their children.

You may ask: “Mario, is there any hope?” Yes, there is! But we need God to apply the electrode paddles to our faintly beating hearts. We need holy rage, holy boldness. We need to talk to every believer we know and tell them to wake up and vote and tell others that they need to vote.

I realize that it takes courage to support President Trump and to take a stand for our faith at this hour. Just remember, right now it may be difficult, but if we lose in November, it will go from hard to impossible.

No one believes in miracles more than I do—and a miracle is exactly what we must have at this hour. We need a miracle of repentance and boldness, but it all begins with our having a humble appreciation for this man whom God has placed in the White House.

There will never be a more important election than this one. Your vote will never mean more than it does now.

In, Over and About

by Paul Jacob, Contributing Author: Sometimes losing track of a story pays off.

Last week, Facebook and Twitter and that minor player, the “major” news media, erupted with Democrats glorying in and gloating over and harrumphing about a story from Reliable Liar & Leaker Adam Schiff — I think that may be his semi-official position in the House of Representatives.

Schiff’s office confirmed that the House Intelligence Committee — which, in fact, Schiff chairs — had been briefed on February 13th to the effect that Russia favors the Trump Administration and will again, this year, ‘interfere’ in U.S. presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders, who is running for the presidency as a Democrat but who calls himself a ‘democratic socialist’ (but of whom Nobel Laureate in Amnesia Paul Krugman dubs a mere ‘social democrat’) . . . well, he got in the news with the story that he had been briefed with “intelligence” that Russia was trying to throw the race towards him. Sanders sputtered his protests.

In 2016, it has been determined, Russian operatives had placed lame social media ‘memes’ into the political mill, impressing no one at the time, but scandalizing Democrats after the ‘inexplicable’ loss of their much-hated candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Perhaps they are priming their Excuse Reservoir for another ignominious defeat?

Anyway, last week I was so distracted that I did not comment on the whole story. Which, conveniently, has now received enough “pushback,” denials and contradictions to close the chapter on it.

In record time, it was over.

That’s about it.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.
