Boozman Supports Employer Verification Bill Calls program important for security, workers, wages
U.S. Rep. John Boozman (R-AR, 3-Dist) has announced his support of H.R. 2508 which requires employers who contract with the federal government to use the verification program which is now voluntary for all other businesses. The Internet-based Basic Pilot Program is administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is available in all 50 states and is free to employers to use to verify newly hired employees. “It is important to the security of our nation that contractors working with the federal government are able to determine the eligibility and identity of their employees and this legislation is the proper step toward accomplishing this goal,” Boozman said. This bill will also affect contractors who do business at military bases or other federal installations. Last month, immigration agents arrested a dozen illegal immigrants working for contractors at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, AR. Boozman identified, “This bill can prevent occurrences like this from happening in the future, by requiring contractors which provide services to military installations to ensure their workers are supposed to be working in the United States. This bill is an added protection for American workers, by requiring employers on federal building projects to hire only workers who are eligible to work here. This will prevent workers’ wages from being undercut, and will result in a benefit for our economy.”Tags:employing illegals, employment verification, Homeland Security, John Boozman, US House
ICYMI: 48 of 600 Workers Had Valid Social Security Numbers
In cased you missed it (ICYMI), The Arkansas Democrat Gazette, NW Edition, on Wednesday reportedon a federal raid on the offices of a Oregon food-processing plant suspected of employing hundreds of illegal workers who used Social Security numbers that belonged to other people or were made up. More than 165 plant workers were detained to be processed for possible deportation. More may have been detained but the raid involved fewer than 600 workers because of seasonal employment changes and shift work. A check of employee records by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed that only 48 of nearly 600 workers at the plant had valid Social Security numbers. Federal prosecutors said that 20 of the Social Security numbers being misused belonged to people 60 or older and that 29 belonged to dead people. Ever wonder what would have happened if the raid had been on one of Arkansas' poultry processing plants? ARRA Editor - We are pleased to exchange links with several blogs partners to get out the conservative message. Tonight, we feature THE TYGRRRR EXPRESS which provides excellent Conservative insights by a young author (Eric). You may your self laughing all the way through one of his postings, and as the Lord knows, we need to laugh with the serious items we face each day. Thank you Eric! The Tygrrrr Express: Immigration is killing large swaths of this country. No, not Mexicans. No, not the scourge of the North, our cold furry Canadian friends. Our immigration problem is internal. To quote Walt Kelly’s Pogo, “We have seen the enemy, and they is us.” Blue state migration has to stop. Sadly enough, blue states have a right to exist. yes, there are people who actually believe blue state solutions work. This begs the question…why don’t they stay there? . . . From Ursula R. Stufflebeam, Mountain Home, AR: I am not a "German-American" nor a "Canadian American," I am "American," having received my citizenship legally in 1968, and I speak my imperfect English with pride.
An applicant for citizenship must be at least 18 years old and must have been a lawful resident of the United States continuously for five years. They must demonstrate an understanding of the English language, including an ability to read, write and speak words in ordinary usage. They must have been a person of good moral character and be attached to the principles of the Constitution, etc., etc., etc. There are a few exceptions, but nowhere does it state that if they protest in the streets, waiving foreign flags and demanding citizenship, that it will be granted.
Certainly our politicians can't think that any of these illegals meet the qualifications of the above paragraph? Let American people vote on this "so-called" amnesty that is now in the works. Apparently the idiots in Washington think we are all brain dead and gag over their achievements.
Perhaps our so-called "D.C. bleeding hearts" could do us all a favor and lead the mass deportation. I would not miss any of them. Let's start with a brand new slate - no term limits - just no retirement pay for sticking it to us twice. Let "we, the people: vote their pay raises for "we, the people" gave them their jobs.
Let them survive on Social Security and their own self-funded health plan, like the majority of this great nation, which, if not for our military, from enlisted to senior officer, would not be the "land of the free." I am proud to say "America, love it or leave it!" but don't try to turn it into the country you deserted to come here illegally. by Mike Soraghan, The Hill: Pentagon officials are bracing for a fight with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over her desire to allow lawmakers’ adult children to tag along on taxpayer-funded travel for free. Pelosi wants them to be able to fill the role of lawmakers’ spouses when the latter are unable to make a trip because of health issues or work commitments.
“It has been longstanding policy that, in the absence of a congressional spouse, the adult child of a member of Congress may accompany the member on official U.S. government travel abroad for protocol reasons and without reimbursing the U.S. Treasury,” Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said. “Speaker Pelosi believes that a modern policy must reflect the professional responsibilities or health realities that might prevent a spouse from participating, and instead permit an adult child to fulfill the protocol needs of the official trip.”Pentagon officials say the policy is that the Treasury must be reimbursed at commercial rates for children who accompany members on such trips, . . . .
“We were told that the Speaker would expect that members’ children (of married and unmarried [members of Congress]) would not have to reimburse the Treasury,” Wilkie wrote. “We expect future challenges from the House leadership on this policy.” . . . But taxpayer watchdog groups and ethics advocates said they were surprised Pelosi would seek more perks for members . . . The Club for Growth: The Democratic Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Charlie Rangel (D-NY), has a message for American taxpayers: "I want your money, and I want it now." Rangel released new legislation this week that will raise the highest income tax rate 4.3 percentage points to 39.3% as part of a plan to reform the Alternative Minimum Tax. Worse, when the Democrats let all the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010, the top income tax rate will soar to 44%. No doubt, Rangel and his buddies will spend America's hard-earned tax dollars on all sorts of crucial programs like subsidies for California spinach growers and peanut storage in Georgia. The Club for Growth released a satirical letter from Charlie Rangel to the American taxpayers. It is worth the read.

General Peter Pace says he refused to quit voluntarily
Dr. Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Thanks to TexasFred a linked partner for the "heads- up" on this story.Washington D.C. (AP): In his first public comments on the Bush administration's surprise decision to replace him as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Peter Pace disclosed that he had turned down an offer to voluntarily retire rather than be forced out. To quit in wartime, he said, would be letting down the troops. . . . "One thing that was discussed was whether or not I should just voluntarily retire and take the issue off the table . . . I said I could not do that for one very fundamental reason," which is that no soldier or Marine in Iraq should "think — ever — that his chairman, whoever that person is, could have stayed in the battle and voluntarily walked off the battlefield. "That is unacceptable as a leadership thing, in my mind."
. . . Pace, whose current term ends Oct. 1, said he intended to remain on the job until then. Navy Adm. Michael Mullen has been announced as Bush's choice to succeed Pace, who is the first Marine ever to hold the military's top post. A Vietnam veteran, Pace has served in uniform for 40 years. That experience colored his decision to refuse to quit voluntarily. "The other piece for me personally was that some 40 years ago I left some guys on the battlefield in Vietnam who lost their lives following 2nd Lt. Pace," he said. "And I promised myself then that I will serve this country until I was no longer needed — that it's not my decision. I need to be told that I'm done. I've been told I'm done. I will run through the finish line on 1 October, and when I run through the finish line I will have met the mission I set for myself," he said. . . . By Steve Leblanc, AP: Massachusetts lawmakers voted Thursday to block a proposed constitutional amendment that would have let voters decide whether to ban gay marriage in the only state that currently allows it. The narrow vote was a victory for gay marriage advocates and a devastating blow to efforts to reverse the historic 2003 state court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. The proposal needed 50 votes to advance to the 2008 ballot. It got 45, with 151 lawmakers opposed. . . from Robert "Mike" Duncan, RNC: Harry Reid doesn't understand that there are some lines you just don't cross. It was bad enough when he said "this war is lost." It was bad enough when he brought bill after bill to the Senate floor trying to force us to surrender Iraq to the terrorists. It is bad enough that he has declared the President's new strategy in Iraq a failure, even though our military leaders say that we won't know the true results until September.
But now Reid has simply gone too far! During an interview with liberal bloggers, he called Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace "incompetent." He made similar comments about General David Petreaus, the man leading our troops in Iraq. There is room for him to express reasonable disagreement about our path forward in Iraq. But to attack our military is unacceptable. To attack General Petraeus, the man actually leading our troops on the ground, is reprehensible. And to call General Pace, a man who has served our nation for his entire adult life with honor and distinction, 'incompetent' is beyond the pale.
Why would Reid attack our men and women in uniform? One simple reason: to play catch-up with the fringes of his liberal base. The far left was furious that President Bush held firm and successfully forced Democrats in Congress to pass a clean war funding bill last month. Now, the Democrats have to make up ground with their extreme base. There's nothing wrong with a healthy political debate about Iraq. But playing politics with our troops' lives and insulting the professional military leaders who are trying to bring those men and women home safe and victorious is just too much. Contact your Congressman and Senators. Urge them to reject Harry Reid's attacks on our military, and to trust our men and women in uniform as they continue to fight to keep the American people safe. by Michael Steele (former Lt Gov Maryland): When House Republicans passed legislation last December that secured our borders and put a premium on strict enforcement of our immigration laws, the American people had hope that their elected leaders had heard their demands. Sadly, the legislation that is currently leading the debate in Washington shows our Senators have turned a deaf ear to the public. Despite last week’s action stopping it from coming to the Senate floor for a final vote, efforts are being made to tinker around the edges with this legislation and pass it later this year. The better course of action is for our elected leaders to follow the no-nonsense direction being called for by hard-working, tax-paying, law-abiding citizens: Secure Our Borders Now! . . .
The problem is the bill’s “triggers” are basically meaningless since amnesty occurs regardless of whether the triggers are pulled. And besides, most of the triggers either are already in place or authorized by current law. For instance, Immigration and Customs Enforcement already has 27,500 detention beds, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is on schedule to have 18,000 Border Patrol agents in the next two years (they currently have almost 15,000 agents) and DHS is already required by law to build over 700 miles of fencing along the border (the 370 miles required by this “trigger” is actually a cut). In short, these “triggers” do not lead to true border security; but rather, greater insecurity for American families and businesses. The current “comprehensive” immigration bill is purposely designed to permit the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants to legally live and work in the U.S. from day one and eventually to become permanent residents and then citizens. This is not the outcome the American people desire. . . . Bill in Congress makes it a crime for pastors & churches to speak against homosexuality
AFA: A bill in Congress makes it a crime for pastors and churches to speak against homosexuality - Message to pastors and other Christians: Just keep your mouth shut!
If pastors and other Christians don’t aggressively oppose a bill now in Congress, in the near future they will be subject to huge fines and prison terms if they say anything negative about homosexuality. The proposed law would make it a crime to preach on Romans Chapter 1 or I Corinthians Chapter 6. Or even to discuss them in a Sunday School class. If churches and individuals want to keep the government from telling them what they can and cannot preach and teach about homosexuality, they better get involved now! HR 1592 and S 1105 would make negative statements concerning homosexuality, such as calling the practice of homosexuality a sin from the pulpit, a “hate crime” punishable by law. This dangerous legislation would take away your freedom of speech and your freedom of religion. AMNESTY BILL IS COMING BACK! Tell Your Senators to Oppose the Kyl-Kennedy Amnesty . . . period!!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said President Bush will have to deliver 20 Republican votes for cloture (to end debate and proceed to a vote on final passage) on the Senate bill. 38 Republicans voted against cloture last week and only 7 voted for cloture.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is trying to work out a list of 10 Republican amendments to get votes on before voting to end debate. Benjamin Shapiro: There is a curious void in the modern American left. That void is the empty spot where God should be. The American left -- and the Democratic Party, as its political representative -- has worked tirelessly over the course of decades to cast God from the public square, all the time disclaiming their mission by invoking "tolerance" for all beliefs. by Michael R. Blood: Republican John McCain's campaign on Wednesday circulated a video clip showing then-Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney reiterating his vow to uphold the state's abortion-rights laws. Romney, in response, suggested that his opponent's criticism was a sign that the Arizona senator is struggling in his presidential bid. . . . "Mitt Romney's biggest challenge in this election will be convincing Republicans he has principled positions on important issues, especially now that it's known that he remained committed to pro-choice policies after his 'epiphany' on abortion in 2004," Matt David, a McCain campaign spokesman, said in a statement in which he also boasted of McCain's 24-year voting record against abortion. That was a reference to a Nov. 9, 2004, meeting that Romney had with an embryonic stem cell researcher. Romney often says it was at that meeting that he decided "to make it very clear that I'm pro-life." Earmarks Delay Homeland Security Bill - Agreement Near
by Andrew Taylor: Republicans skillfully exploited a political opening provided by Democrats, whose position ran counter to a campaign promises and reforms passed both this year and last. . . . Democrats yielded to GOP demands for floor votes on offending "earmarks." . . . David Obey, D-WI, started an uproar by announcing earmarks . . . wouldn't be added to spending bills until House-Senate negotiations. Obey subsequently softened his position to offer GOP conservatives weeks to scrutinize the thousands of earmarks in spending bills, but until Wednesday evening was publicly unwilling to guarantee floor votes on questionable projects. . . . The development came Wednesday evening . . . The agreement has not been finalized, but under an outline described by both Democrats and Republicans, Democrats would largely abandon plans to bypass floor debates on earmarks, while Republicans would offer procedural help to move the 12 spending bills through the notoriously partisan House. Republicans cautioned that an agreement was not final. . . [Read More] Tags:earmarks, federal funding, Homeland SecurityTo share or post to your site, click on "Post Link". Arkansans Are Outing Senator Lincoln's Pro-Homosexual Voting Record -- Free Speech at Risk
Letters to the editors published in Arkansas newspapers are taking Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) to task for supporting the Hate Crimes (Hate Speech) bill before the Senate. Below are excerpts from some letters that were posted by the Women's Prayer & Action Org:[Click to Read full text]
Iris Stevens, Jonesboro - Just how well is Sen. Blanche Lincoln representing the values of Arkansans? She just voted to keep the section of the immigration bill that allows immediate legal status for 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens. . . . (However,) Lincoln is also . . . co-sponsor of the hate crime bill that passed the House and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. Three of Arkansas’ four representatives voted against the bill. . . Our state Legislature has voted against a hate crime bill nine times.
Lincoln in 2006 received an 89% rating from the largest gay and lesbian organization in the country, Human Rights Campaign, . . . She also received a 75% rating from the ACLU in 2006, up from 43% in 2000. . . . According to National Review, the ACLU defended the North American Man-Boy Love Assoc. after two convicted pedophiles accessed information on NAMBLA’s website and used it to seduce, rape and murder a 10-year-old boy, then (the ACLU) sued the city of San Diego to expel the Boy Scouts from Balboa Park, calling them a religious group. Just how many Arkansans would vote like Lincoln, 75% of the time with the ACLU and 89% with the Human Rights Campaign?
Bobby L. Hester: Sen. Lincoln is co-sponsor of the U.S. hate crime bill that recently passed the House. Doesn't Lincoln believe that we are all created equal and deserve equal protection? Giving more punishment for violating one person than another and giving federal protection to certain classes, as the hate crime bill does, is not equal treatment. . . The latest hate crime bill expands protection for sexual orientation, and Lincoln voted more than once to add that language to the bill. . . If homosexuals are born with homosexual orientation, wouldn't the same be true for pedophiles? Just recently in an Arkansas pedophile case, a prominent psychiatrist and the defense attorney both testified that the offender suffered from homosexual pedophilia, as well as mental illness, and was unable to control his actions. Until 1973 homosexuality was considered a mental disorder, not sexual orientation. Sen. Lincoln, just how long will it be before pedophilia will be considered sexual orientation?
Bobbie Warner, Little Rock: Sen. Blanche Lincoln says she supports the U.S. hate crime bill. A post by America's Human Rights Campaign (HRC), self proclaimed as the largest gay and lesbian organization, heralds the victory of the passage of this hate crime bill in the US House, saying, "The bill adds sexual orientation and gender identity... hate violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
According to the FBI report there were 5,190 victims related to hate crime in 2005. The approximate number of crimes against children each year is 849,000. About 2,000 of those children are murdered each year, but only 6 of the hate crime victims were murdered. And about half of the hate crime victims were just threats, not actions. Oh, that our children could be so lucky . . . Sen. Lincoln . . . received a 89% rating by HRC's . . . 43 senators didn't vote for even one of the bills HRC thought was important, earning a 0%. Lincoln, however, received her 0% rating from Concerned Women of America, voting against family and children issues. . . . contact Lincoln and tell her that instead of exalting homosexuals to priority status, our 849,000 child victims need the federal assistance the hate crime promises to lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.
Debrah Donner, Manilla: "Pastors, Act Now or Prepare for Jail, "was the title of an article recently used by a author in regard to the US hate crime bill H. R. 1592. . . . The bill passed the House 237-180 but hasn't passed the Senate. An amendment by Rep. Dave Weldon (FL) "to clarify that the printing, distribution, or public reading of the Bible is not prohibited by any of the provisions of the bill," was defeated in the Rules Comm. by Democrats 9-4. Another amendment, "Nothing in this section limits the religious freedom of any person or group under the Constitution," by Rep. Mike Pence was also rejected by Democrats... According to FBI reports, "In about half of hate crimes, the victim was threatened verbally or assaulted without either a weapon or an injury being involved," In other words, the crimes were speech. It is obvious that hate crime bills are designed to take away the free speech of anyone that expresses politically incorrect viewpoints on issues. And the Reviews Keep Rolling In… Democrats have not done themselves proud on earmarks”
ARRA: This post expands on prior post 6 days ago -Comments Regarding New House Earmark Rules By Adam Putnam, Chair US House Republican Conference:WHAT THEY’RE SAYING about Democrat Earmark Abuses
Chicago Sun-Times: “Democrats in the House seem to be blowing their first opportunity to demonstrate they mean business … More openness is supposed to make lawmakers propose only those earmarks that are easy to defend, or force them to withdraw projects that don't stand up to public scrutiny. If the House Democratic plan does anything to reduce public scrutiny, then it represents a step backward in the battle against pork.” (Editorial, 6/8/07)
Pensacola (FL) News Journal: “Democrats have not done themselves proud on earmarks. Despite their promises to smash open the pork barrel and stop hiding members' projects, the Democrats are bypassing their own House rules to let earmarks remain shrouded in the technical mists of the budget … [I]t sounds as if the pressure from members eager to feed at the trough is causing the reform to be sidetracked … The Democrats promised much, but so far have delivered less.” (Editorial, 6/5/07)
Lincoln (NE) Journal Star: “Those optimistic souls who trusted that ethics would make a dramatic appearance in Washington after the Democrats won control of Congress have had their faith tested . . . Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Pa., who had a temper tantrum after a Republican member unearthed an earmark Murtha had inserted into the intelligence authorization act … That dust-up was emblematic of the way that reform has languished in the House since newly elected Speaker Nancy Pelosi promised to ‘drain the swamp’ and end ‘the culture of corruption’ . . .” (Editorial, 6/4/07)
Baltimore Sun: “Favor czar … a Democratic effort to bring these goodies out of the closet has run wildly awry. Overwhelmed by more than 30,000 requests from his 434 colleagues, the chairman of the House Appropriations Comm., David R. Obey . . . and his staff alone will sort the worthy from the unworthy, the election-year booty from the lobbyist payoff …” (Editorial, 6/11/07)
St. Louis Post-Dispatch: “. . . Democrats pledged to end, or at least curb, earmarks … But, in a slick maneuver, Appropriations Comm. chairman David Obey, D-WI, will keep earmarks off bills now, but attach them at the last minute before passage this fall. That will keep them hidden from public scrutiny until it's too late for spoilsport good-government types to raise a stink.”(Editorial, 6/11/07)
The Press of Atlantic City (NJ): “But they’ve done a shameful and shocking about-face. . . . Democrats are following an order by the Appropriations Comm. chairman, Rep. David Obey, D-WI., to keep the earmarks out of spending bills entirely until the last moment - when bills come up for final action and cannot be amended, and when it will be too late to oppose specific projects as wasteful or questionable. Congressional watchdog groups are justifiably outraged …” (Editorial, 6/8/07)
Wisconsin State Journal: “Obey is now dodging the very reforms he helped to generate… His solution was to wait until the end of the lawmaking process, where earmarks would be submitted in closed-door sessions of the committee that negotiates the differences between House and Senate versions of bills. With this maneuver, Obey would enhance his own power but prevent the public and most lawmakers from questioning earmarks until it is too late.” (Editorial, 6/7/07)
Cleveland (OH) Plain Dealer: “… Democrats promised to reduce the practice [of earmarking], in part, by shining light on it. But now Appropriations Chairman David Obey has decided that he will review all earmark requests and add them during conference committee deliberations to reconcile House and Senate spending bills. That's a secretive process, and its final product gets a yes-or-no vote in each chamber. This means earmarks will sail through before the press or even most members of Congress can examine or challenge them. There's nothing inherently wrong with Congress making minute spending decisions, but do it openly.” (Editorial, 6/10/07)
Mobile (AL) Press-Register: “Democrats work ATM … But now that they control the ATM, the Democrats are finding all sorts of excuses to keep the earmark dispenser open for business … Democrats are reneging on their vows of fiscal responsibility just a few months after they won their chance to load the ATM.” (Editorial, 6/8/07)
Charleston (SC) Post and Courier: “. . .Rep. David Obey, D-WI, has decreed that earmarks won't be considered in budget bills until they reach conference committee. . . . Critics justifiably contend that the idea would sharply diminish the needed level of public review, particularly since conference committees are held behind closed doors … Former congressional aide Winslow Wheeler . . . put it more broadly . . .‘The rhetoric has changed but not the behavior, and the behavior has gotten worse in the sense that while they are pretending to reform things, they are still groveling in the trough.’” (Editorial, 5/26/07)
Tacoma (WA) News Tribune: “Pork reform? Some say Democrats doing the opposite …, Rep. David Obey, D-WI, has said the earmarks will be added when House-Senate conference committees meet to hammer out the final versions of the bills. . . . Obey is maneuvering to ensure earmarks added to the spending bills can’t be challenged. The final version of an appropriations bill can’t be amended when it comes to the House floor. . . . by Phyllis Schlafly: Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, please call your boss and urge him to read your May 9 speech to the National Summit on America's Silent Epidemic in Washington, DC. Your eloquence in describing the silent epidemic was exceeded only by our shock at the facts you described.
"The dropout rate for African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students approaches 50 percent. . . . Every year nearly a million kids fail to graduate high school. . . . The United States has the most severe income gap between high school graduates and dropouts in the world." You exhorted us to deal with this problem because "stopping the exodus" is both a "moral imperative" and an "economic necessity." You lambasted our government's current "state of denial" and demanded "a state of acknowledgement." Administration "More Determined Than Ever" To Pass Amnesty
by Steve Elliott: Bush and the Amnesty Senators are now preparing to bring the Bush-Kennedy Amnesty bill back for a vote immediately. Yesterday, Commerce Secretary Gutierrez said the administration is “more determined than ever” to pass amnesty andTony Snow added that the Senate “could wrap this up in two days.” Now, Bush (has met) . . . with Senate Republicans to plan strategy and Majority Leader Reid is saying he is ready to move the bill to a vote. . . . Bush said of the immigration bill that has run into deep trouble on Capitol Hill. “I’ll see you at the bill signing.” This is outrageous. By Jerome Corsi: Noe Aleman, a border patrol agent for 12 years in the El Paso sector of Texas, is headed to federal prison today, destined to join Border Patrol Agent Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos in solitary confinement at Yazoo City, Miss., both having been prosecuted by El Paso U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton. He surrenders to the U.S. Marshal's office at the U.S. District Court in El Paso at 2:00 pm local time today. What was Aleman's crime?
"I was prosecuted for trying to adopt the three daughters of my wife's sister after their father died in Mexico," Aleman said in a telephone interview. "My wife and I cannot have children and we already have an adopted Samoan child from Hawaii, Noe Aleman III, now age 18." But to read the statement from Sutton's office, Aleman is a dangerous criminal who defrauded the United States by smuggling aliens, providing false testimony to the adoption court, and lying to federal authorities about the girls' ages, whereabouts, and parentage. . . . [Read More]
Aleman's legally adopted daughters are today at an orphanage in Juarez, separated from their adopted parents and forbidden from returning to the United States for another 10 years. "It's hard to see what's happened to me as justice," Aleman argued over the phone. "I spent 12 years of my life on the border trying to prevent criminals and illegal aliens from entering the United States and now I find myself going to federal prison." "What crime did I commit?" Aleman asks. "There are organized criminals out there who bring hundreds of women and children into the U.S. for sexual exploitation. I'm not one of the bad guys. I'm one of the good guys who just wanted to adopt three kids who were already part of our family." The Aleman family has set up a defense site at their website.

by Rep. Roy Blunt, Human Events editorial: That the authors of our nation's governing document gave the House of Representatives exclusive authority to bring forth legislation related to revenue was no accident. The House, after all, was designed to be the more responsive, more accountable of the two chambers -- especially when it came to the business of raising and spending the hard-earned money of the American taxpayer. But it's precisely this element of accountability that's come under withering attack from Democratic corners this year. . . . the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee simplified the process dramatically by declaring himself a one-man selection committee in charge of determining how much of your money will be spent through earmarks this year, and to whom it will be sent.
These funding decisions are among the most important and controversial items we deal with each year, and for good reason. After all, the question of how to allocate the hard-earned money that millions of American families pay in taxes deserves the same sober and serious deliberation by members of Congress that families give to creating their own budgets around the dinner table. That's why it's so important that the rules of the budgeting and appropriations process be well-defined and understood -- and the process itself easy to monitor from the outside, and difficult to obfuscate or manipulate on the inside.
Unfortunately, that basic level of transparency will not be part of the annual appropriations process in Congress this year. Instead, one man will decide which of the thousands of spending requests will receive support, and which will not. And once that's determined, that one man will draft a series of conference reports with no opportunity for amendment by elected members of the House. The potential for abuse in proceeding along a course this invulnerable to scrutiny is obvious. . . . Just to give you a sense, under their plan spending projects couldn't be challenged on the floor as long as a list of earmarks -- even an inaccurate or incomplete one -- is included in the bill. Even more disturbing, a bill slathered with pork can be certified as "earmark-free" if the corresponding money is dropped into a slush fund without identifying where it's going. Of course, the payouts will be the same as soon as the names, places and amounts are added in conference. But gone will be any opportunity to debate the merits of that funding in an open, honest, and transparent manner. . . . [Read More]

by Bill Woodiel, ARRA guest reporter: Today (6/11/07), Paul Harvey News & Comment reported that "President Bush, at the G8 Summit was quite safe. He was protected by a 7 mile long fence which kept protesters at a distance. It took German engineers 6 days to build 7 miles of fence. That much fence on our Mexican border took President Bush's engineers 7 years."
Imagine anyone using a fence to keep people, whom you don't want in, out! A fence; what a really great & novel idea.
WheresTheFence.com: Last year, Congress and the President promised 700 miles of fence. Now, with almost no progress on the fence, they are pushing ahead with amnesty. KTHV Little Rock: . . . Former Governor Mike Huckabee’s success in the recent Republican debates has raised questions of his potential as a vice presidential running mate, but he’s not biting. “I think we're trying to figure out which of these guys I'll pick as my running mate,” he said. “I've gone from a candidate no one knew much about to a person their talking about for vice president. I think by January, they will be talking about me as the presidential candidate. Tony Perkins, FRC: Hoping to lure more Republicans to support the upcoming appropriations bill, House Democrats surprised everyone by voting to increase the amount of abstinence-education funding from the $137 million that President Bush requested to $141 million. Although the measure still faces debate in the full House, the growing support for the Community Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) program looks promising. Unfortunately, the compromise over abstinence funding comes at a price. In exchange for boosting the CBAE funds, Democrats want tens of millions more in Title X "family planning services." Last week, committee members voted to raise the Title X from $283 million to $311 million! According to a new report by one of the biggest recipients of those dollars, Planned Parenthood, the increased funds would almost certainly work hand in neoprene glove with the organization's booming abortion services. The 2005-2006 Planned Parenthood Annual Report shows that the organization performed a record 264,943 abortions in 2005 yet did not record a single adoption referral. With assets totaling more than $839 million, Planned Parenthood hardly needs a government handout. Contact your representatives and ask them to invest your tax dollars in the one form of pregnancy and disease prevention that never fails--abstinence.Take Action Now: Congressional DirectoryTags:abstinence education, federal funding, FRC, Planned Parenthood, Tony PerkinsTo share or post to your site, click on "Post Link". Media Research Center: On Friday's Good Morning America, co-anchor [liberal]* Chris Cuomo, the son of former Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo, slammed conservative immigration hawk Tom Tancredo for using "scary" words and wondered why he chose to "rip" down the Senate's immigration bill. [Didn't know Tancredo had this much power -- GO TOM]*The GMA anchor slyly asked if the Congressman was "driving anti-immigrant sentiment." Cuomo's overall tone fit the very definition of loaded questions and a liberal agenda. The ABC anchor, whose brother is the Democratic Attorney General of New York, began the segment by aggressively inquiring, "Why did you feel the need to rip a bill like this down?"
He continued with a query about why Tancredo, who is also running for President, opposed a "humane" solution: "A majority of Americans want a humane solution. The numbers are in favor of giving some type of amnesty to these people. Isn't that the humane solution? Why are you so adamantly opposed to it?" Tom Tancredo: "Here is how you handle it. It's called, it's called attrition through enforcement. If we actually begin to enforce the laws, secure our border and enforce the law against people hiring people who are here illegally, you will see attrition. People go home if they cannot get the thing for which they came. And then they get in line and they come in the same way anybody else does."[Good answer Tom]*
Of course, Cuomo only presented half the story. Yes, a majority of Americans do support some type of guest worker plan. But most polls find agreement on enforcing existing immigration laws:www.foxnews.com Additionally, as the MRC's Tim Graham pointed out, a New York Times poll found that 69 percent of Americans said illegal aliens should be prosecuted and deported: newsbusters.org . CNSNews: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Friday threw some weight behind 2008 Republican presidential frontrunner Rudy Giuliani even though Gingrich may himself decide to enter the race in September. Citing his "extraordinary accomplishments" as New York City mayor, Gingrich praised Giuliani for bringing a new approach to an inefficient government. Gingrich said this needs to happen on a much larger scale across the nation. . . . He also praised former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's handling of the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. And Gingrich observed that former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson - who has yet to make a formal candidacy announcement - "would be very formidable." Arizona Sen. John McCain "has the greatest challenge" among the Republicans, Gingrich said. He cited among difficulties McCain will face his work in passing campaign finance reform and his support for the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform proposals, which many conservatives view as an amnesty program. . . .
The former House speaker has been coy about his presidential ambitions. In some interviews and speeches, Gingrich has suggested that he will join the race, while in others he has characterized his candidacy as unlikely. "If there's a real genuine vacuum, we may feel compelled to run," Gingrich said, referring to himself and wife Callista. "If there are people who have filled the vacuum and are campaigning on solutions of appropriate scale, we'll be happy to keep giving them ideas." Gingrich said his plan for "winning the future" is "vastly more important than anything I'd accomplish, at least in the short run, if I were a candidate." [Read More] ARRA Editor:Gingrich may realize that his past personal issues are reflective of those of Giuliani and that Giuliani has a better chance of winning the race for the GOP nomination. Either winning or losing the race to be the GOP candidate could damage Gingrich's broad based efforts to advance his proposed plan for "winning the future" with voters be they republicans, independents or democrats. Also, for the moment at least within the GOP, past misdeeds can hurt your future efforts when you chose to apply to be the "chief leader of the flock." Media Miss Irony of Anti-Gun Rep. William Jefferson Possessing Firearms
Posted on NewsBusters by Noel Sheppard on 6/9/2007:Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) was ordered by a U.S. district judge to surrender his firearms Friday. Yet, media outlets that reported this ignored the delicious irony inherent in the Congressman’s anti-gun positions throughout his career.
As reported by the Associated Press Friday (h/tMarc Sheppard, emphasis added): “As conditions for his release, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III denied the Congressman access to shotguns and rifles in his Louisiana home.”
ABCNews.com also reported this interesting revelation (emphasis added): Jefferson will also have to surrender guns he has at his home in New Orleans. Jefferson said he had several rifles and shotguns.
On the television side, CNN did at least three reports Friday about Jefferson that included his gun possession, starting with “CNN Newsroom” during the 10AM EST hour:
TONY HARRIS, HOST: Right. And Brianna, Jefferson wants to keep his firearms?
BRIANNA KEILAR, CORRESPONDENT: He didn't say he wants to keep them, but this is an interesting -- this was an interesting moment in court. He does have firearms. The judge asked him about this. He has rifles and guns that he says are for hunting. He says he's been hunting since he was 10 years old. What normally happens, if you come up on charges, you're not allowed to have possession of weapons, use weapons. So, he's going to have to figure out something. His attorney, and the prosecution, are going to have to figure out a way to take those guns out of his possession or lock them up in a way that he doesn't have access to them.
HARRIS: Gotcha.
As far as the broadcast networks, only the “CBS Evening News” felt this court proceeding was at all newsworthy, and its producers totally ignored the gun issue. Yet, most important, none of the reports that did include the firearms story pointed out Jefferson’s strong anti-gun positions in the past, an irony that was certainly not lost on the American Thinker’s Marc Sheppard (emphasis added):But the specter of a gun-toting gun opponent raises some rather curious questions, wouldn't you say?
You might ask yourself, what does a man who, in 2005, voted against a bill to protect law-abiding gun dealers and manufacturers from litigation blaming them for criminal misuse of their products by others, need with rifles? Did he own them when he voted against similar law in 2003?
Why would a legislator with an anti-Second-Amendment voting record that earned him an NRA rating identical to that of Chuckie Schumer and Nancy Pelosi own multiple shotguns?
For those interested, that rating by the NRA for Jefferson is an “F.”
Yet, these media outlets seemed happy to dismiss a controversy that they weren’t willing to address by informing readers that when asked by the judge about these guns, Jefferson replied, “I've been hunting since I was 10 years old."
Hmm. Isn’t that what gun advocates say about their own arsenals?
Toward that end, Marc made a bulls eye with his parting shot: Naturally, had the camo-clothed Liberal been involved in an accidental discharge while stalking gallinules on the Bayou one hot summer's morn', there'd have been no one to blame but Remington. How marvelous. Tags:corruption, gun control, US Congress, William JeffersonTo share or post to your site, click on "Post Link". Please mention / link to the ARRA News Service. Thanks!
by David Paul Kuhn: . . . They ("Top Democrats") showcased their faith-friendly credentials at an event last week unprecedented for modern Democrats, hosted by the Rev. Jim Wallis, a key figure of the religious left. John Edwards spoke of his “belief in Christ” and said “it was the Lord that got me through” the death of his son. Barack Obama said religion taught us to be “our brother’s keeper, our sister’s keeper.” Hillary Rodham Clinton said she was not sure how she would have handled her husband’s public infidelity “without my faith. And, you know,” she added, “I take my faith very seriously and very personally.” That may be true, but will it persuade churchgoers to vote Democratic in 2008? Raleigh Chronicle Staff & Wire Reports, June 7, 2007: RALEIGH - In a surprising development, a Republican presidential candidate who hasn't even officially announced his candidacy yet is leading polls of Republican voters in North Carolina. If a vote were held today for the Republican primary, former US Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee would be leading the way among all candidates in the party, says Public Policy Polling which is located in Raleigh. According to the report, Thompson's support jumped from 25% of likely Republican voters in May to 37% in this month's poll, while Rudy Giuliani's support fell to 25%. The poll said that John McCain and Mitt Romney both were tied with 14%.
