One Quarter of Black Population Missing from Abortion Genocide Says Dr. Alveda King
by Hilary White: Dr. Alveda King, the niece of legendary human rights campaigner Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., told a meeting of Priests for Life that the killing of a quarter of the black population of the US has not been from the lynch mobs of her childhood days, but from abortionists, "who plant their killing centres in minority neighbourhoods and prey upon women who think they have no hope."
"The great irony," she said, "is that abortion has done what the Klan only dreamed of" . . . Dr. King pointed out that the killing of the unborn in the US, which has taken the lives of well over 42 million American children, is overwhelmingly concentrated in the African-American community. “In the last forty-plus years,” Dr. King said, “15 million black people have been denied their most basic civil right, the right to life. Roughly one quarter of the black population is now missing.” . . . “It's time to stop killing the future and keep their dream alive.” . . . Highway Robbery of Texas Roads (SPP & Trans-Texas Corridor)
by Cathie Adams, Texas Eagle Forum: Texas drivers are tired of traffic gridlock. We want new roads built sooner rather than later, but we do not want a Trans-Texas Corridor that would surely invite more illegal drugs and more illegal aliens. Legislators have gotten our message but since both highway funds, the State Highway Fund (a gasoline tax) and the Texas Mobility Fund (bond money), have been pilfered for other uses, there is no money for road building.
Members of the Texas Senate Transportation & Homeland Security Committee met on August 7 to discuss this funding dilemma. Committee Chairman John Carona suggested a new constitutional amendment to protect the two existing highway funds from future abuses. He also recommended linking the state gas tax to inflation, in order to keep pace with the economy. Both ideas could be helpful in the future, but do nothing to remedy our current state of affairs. A new funding scheme, public-private partnerships, was also discussed which allows foreign interests to lease our infrastructure for 50-99 years. Like highway robbers, those private investors would profit as much as 39 times the road building cost and then take their loot and leave the country. That’s a bad deal for Texans who currently own our infrastructure . . .
When Texas taxpayers learned about Cintra, a foreign company public-private partnership, they were outraged. As a result, the legislature passed a moratorium on the public-private partnership scheme to build the Trans-Texas Corridor (TTC), the Texas segment of the NAFTA Highway that bisects the entire country from Laredo, TX to Duluth, MN. Regretfully, Governor Rick Perry vetoed not only the moratorium, but also a law to require our Attorney General to study the impact of federal laws on our state and a good eminent domain bill aimed at protecting farmers and ranchers from the unfair taking of 580,000 acres to build the 12-lane TTC super-highway. The unconstitutional NAFTA treaty and unilateral SPP agreement are undermining our nation’s sovereignty and security. In order for America to remain strong, we must . . . by John Gizzi: Presidential politics was in full swing at the Midwest Republican Conference here, as Mike Huckabee brought the 400-plus guests to their feet with a fighting luncheon speech. "I'm a little sick of runnng a credit card through the gas pump and knowing I just made the Saudi oil family a little more rich," the former Arkansas governor told the cheering crowd, underscoring his call for energy independence by the United States. Huckabee went on to decry spending "$250-to-half a billion dollars a year on compliance" by Americans with the federal income tax, and repeated his now-familiar call for a "fair [consumption] tax" that "a kid running a lemonade stand could understand."
Serenaded by luncheon guests on his 52nd birthday ("Now tell me how great I look!" he joked to them), Huckabee also spoke of the Republican Party as "the party of Main Street and not Wall Street" and gave his reasons for being a Republican, which included his beliefs that "life begins at conception" and marriage "is between a man and a woman and nothing else." . . . Having raised $1.3 million for his campaign up until the vote in Ames, Iowa, Huckabee "has now brought in several hundred thousand dollars just since then," according to Salzman . . . In addition, the governor is sandwiching in his speaking engagements with a string of 20 fund-raisers, including events in Virginia, California, and Missouri. The Huckabee campaign also released a string of major political endorsements in New Hampshire, site of the first-in-the-nation primary . . . [Read More]

Hispanics Moving Out Of Oklahoma Before New Law Takes Effect
by Jerry Giordano, Tulsa News Channel 8: Tens of thousands of Hispanics have left the Tulsa area. And, a law designed to crack down on illegal immigration hasn't even taken effect yet. But, there's a catch. East Tulsa is where the majority of Hispanics ended up settling. They came by the thousands and now they're leaving that way, too. And, it's all because of one word -- deportation. . . . "Two months ago I heard 25-thousand Hispanics have left Oklahoma," Navarro says. That is about 30-percent of Oklahoma's Hispanic population. "They are leaving. A lot have already left."
. . . officials are standing firm. If they are here illegally, it's a one way trip home. And, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office is doing its part to move things along. This week, they're training deputies to handle the deportation process. And word is spreading quickly. Simon has already said a lot of goodbyes. "People are leaving," he says. "They're scared of the sheriff." . . . There is a large group of people on the other side who believe the new law, which takes effect in November, is a good idea. Most illegal immigrants are ending up in either Kansas or Arkansas. But, that may not be for long. Arkansas is about to adopt a law like Oklahoma's. Kansas is considering the same thing. by Jane Whitson, Pajamas Media: If the sweltering 96 degree heat in Nashville at a fundraiser/reception this week for Fred Thompson is any indication of the political heat he’s taking from faithful supporters to get on with it and announce his candidacy for President, then it doesn’t seem like it can stay this hot much longer. . . . We’re getting very, very close,” Thompson said . . . “Sometime in the next few weeks, we’ll officially have our hat in the ring.”
. . . Like a cool breeze blowing away the stifling air he continued: “We’re right where we want to be. I’ve already saved us over $50,000,000 by waiting to announce. I’m doing in several months what others have been working on for years, and in some cases for a lifetime. In the spring with no money raised, I was in second or third place.”“We got sued several weeks ago by a liberal blogger. It’s the first time in history someone has been sued for not announcing on time.” . . . The crowd roared its approval . . . Bush put on spot: Where's the fence? Despite $800 million , only 18 miles completed
by Jerome R. Corsi: With only a small fraction of the border fence between the U.S. and Mexico complete, California congressman and Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter is warning President Bush the construction mandated by the Secure Fence Act is falling drastically behind schedule. "Unless construction is promptly accelerated," Hunter wrote in a letter to Bush, "deadlines for the completion of fencing will not be met." . . . The Bush administration's unwillingness to build a border fence, even when mandated by a law Bush signed as recently as Oct. 26, 2006, questions the credibility of Bush's denial, especially when the border with Mexico remains wide open today, nearly six years since the Bush administration declared war on terrorism.
Hunter's letter points out the Secure Fence Act calls for completing 392 miles of fencing from Calexico, Calif., to Douglas, Ariz., by May 30, 2008. Additionally, the act mandates 30 miles of fencing be completed in the Laredo, Texas, sector by Dec. 31, 2008. "It is my understanding that approximately $800 million is currently available for the installation of border infrastructure," Hunter's letter continued. "Despite this funding, only 17.9 of the 854 miles of fencing called for in the Secure Fence Act have been completed as of Aug. 10, 2007." Hunter emphasized, "This lack of progress is unacceptable, especially when adequate funding is available to earnestly proceed with fence construction." He recommended President Bush "immediately direct the Department of Homeland Security to execute contracts in a way that all fencing locations identified in the Secure Fence Act are constructed concurrently." . . . WorldNetDaily, Aug 23, 2007: President Bush's top intelligence aide has confirmed that Iraqi terrorists have been captured coming into the United States from Mexico. The confirmation comes from National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, who talked about the situation in an interview with the El Paso Times recently. "Coming up through the Mexican border is a path," McConnell said. "Now, are they doing it in great numbers? No, because we're finding them and we're identifying them and we've got watch lists and we're keeping them at bay." But, he said, "There are numerous situations where people are alive today because we caught them (terrorists)." Intelligence officials say the numbers and details of such situations are classified . . . U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-TX, of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee . . .said, "It's not something we would talk about." . . . By Geoff Earle, New York Post: Aug 24, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton yesterday raised the prospect of a terror attack before next year's election, warning that it could boost the GOP's efforts to hold on to the White House. Discussing the possibility of a new nightmare assault while campaigning in New Hampshire, Clinton also insisted she is the Democratic candidate best equipped to deal with it.
"It's a horrible prospect to ask yourself, 'What if? What if?' But if certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism, that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again, no matter how badly they have mishandled it, no matter how much more dangerous they have made the world," Clinton told supporters in Concord. "So I think I'm the best of the Democrats to deal with that," she added. The former first lady made the surprising comments as she explained to supporters that she has beaten back the GOP's negative attacks for years, and is ready to do so again. "The spirit of Christianity is pure democracy." [Historical Quote]
PRESIDENTIAL QUOTE: Ninety-nine years ago President William Howard Taft said the following:
No man can study the movement of modern civilization from an impartial standpoint and not realize that Christianity and the spread of Christianity are the basis of hope of modern civilization in the growth of popular self-government. The spirit of Christianity is pure democracy. It is equality of man before God—the equality of man before the law, which is, as I understand it, the most God-like manifestation that man has been able to make. -- William Howard Taft, 1908

by Ann Coulter: Mickey Kaus has raised the intriguing possibility that, since Bush's amnesty plan went down to humiliating defeat once Americans got wind of what the elites had planned for us, the Bush administration might respond by intentionally targeting highly sympathetic illegal aliens for deportation "in as clumsy, heartless and lawsuit-inspiring a fashion as possible, in order to create the maximum number of negative headlines." . . . So it was curious when we were treated this week to a weeping Mexican woman on TV, claiming the U.S. government was tearing her from her infant son and saying she knew the American people would be outraged if she were deported.
. . . I'd just as soon have Homeland Security focusing on illegal immigrants like the one who shot four promising college kids execution style in Newark, killing three of them, possibly after sexually molesting two of them. Heck, I wouldn't have minded if they had deported Jose Carranza even before his girlfriend accused him of raping her 5-year-old daughter. - Or Ruben Hernandez-Juarez, an illegal alien charged with sexually molesting a 6-year-old boy in Martin County, Fla. - Or Alejandro Bautista, an illegal alien in Cook County, Ill., who was convicted for sexually molesting two teenage boys. - Or Alejandro Xuya-Sian, the illegal alien who hit a pedestrian with his car in New York and dragged him for nearly a mile before dislodging the victim from his car, throwing him aside and driving off again. - Or illegal alien Alberto Barajas-Enriquez, who is charged with beating his Michigan neighbor to death with a golf club because the neighbor complained about the constant barking of Enriquez's dog. - Or Lucio Sanchez-Martinez, the illegal alien in Ohio charged with sexually molesting a sleeping 8-year-old girl.
. . . Still, if Elvira Arellano is the best they've got to change public opinion on deporting illegal aliens, don't expect public opinion to change anytime soon. Arellano has already snuck into the country illegally twice (that we know of). After being deported in 1999 – under an administration that, astonishingly, was more serious about enforcing immigration law than the current one – she illegally ran across the border again a few days later. Only after 9/11 was she arrested again and convicted for using a stolen Social Security number to get a job as a cleaning woman at an airport. In lieu of jail time, Arellano was to be deported. Instead, she took refuge in a left-wing "church" and began to bellyache about being thrown out again. Despite living in this country illegally for a decade, Arellano hasn't mastered the most rudimentary English. She doesn't want to assimilate and become a "Mexican-American." She wants to be a Mexican-Mexican living in and off America. So far, the only thing Arellano has contributed to America is one illegitimate child. . . . Shell Game - Domestic Lawsuits Make U.S. Dependent on Foreign Oil
Featured Editorial, Wall Street Journal: Just about everyone claims the U.S. must urgently become "energy independent," yet at the same time just about every policy that may actually serve that goal is met with environmentalist opposition. That contradiction has impeded the Bush Administration's attempts to increase domestic energy production. And even the modest progress so far may be blocked because litigation is driving the conflict out of politics and into the courts. To see this trend at work, look north to Alaska, where lawsuits are blocking an offshore drilling program. Last week, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted an emergency stay that will suspend all operations until at least September, when the court will hear full arguments. . . . This is bad news for Shell, whose three-year exploration program in the Beaufort Sea was green-lighted by the Department of the Interior in February. The company planned to sink up to four temporary wells this summer to determine the available resources. But there's a limited open-water window before the winter ice moves back in, so the Ninth Circuit could delay work for a year, even if it decides in Shell's favor. The worst ramifications, however, could hit environmental and regulatory law.
. . . Congress and the executive are charged with determining what areas should be opened to development, balancing the public interest with environmental concerns. The law then provides for "maximum protection" within that context, which MMS has clearly done here. The public interest in this case is domestic energy. The U.S. is one of the only countries in the world that chooses to lock up its natural resources. Since 2003, the Administration and Congress have lifted the federal moratoria on a few select areas of the Outer Continental Shelf. The Beaufort basin, which is estimated to hold 27.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 8.2 billion barrels of recoverable oil, was one of those. A successful exploratory program could open a new frontier of energy. That public purpose is what drives the greens bonkers, so they're trying to create a legal backstop to prevent any Administration from doing what President Bush has done. The Shell case shows that even a long and expensive effort to address every conceivable concern can still be undone by lawsuits. If anyone wants to know why we're still "dependent on foreign oil," this is it.. . . [Read More]
ARRA News Editorial Comment: This editorial identifies the extreme efforts by a few who seek to make America continually dependent on foreign oil and gas. Even when all necessary reasonable protections are established, they still oppose our being able to use our own natural resources. Congress has the authority to abolish the 9th Circuit Court - the wackiest court in history having been overturned on a significant majority of its decisions appealed to the Supreme Court. Regardless, Congress could immediately resolve the problems hampering energy independence by redefining the jurisdiction of the 9th Circuit Court and removing and assigning all cases related to the review of Federal Energy oversight of agencies like the Minerals Management Service to a special Appellate level court or by establishing a special court to expedite the review such policies and actions. A special court already exist for government contracting disputes. American energy policies need to be freed from being taken hostage of environments and the 9th Circuit Court. Sizzling study concludes: Global warming 'hot air'
WorldNetDaily: A major new scientific study concludes the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on worldwide temperatures is largely irrelevant, prompting one veteran meteorologist to quip, "You can go outside and spit and have the same effect as doubling carbon dioxide." That comment comes from Reid Bryson, founding chairman of the Dept. of Meteorology at the Univ. of Wisconsin, who said the temperature of the earth is increasing, but that it's got nothing to do with what man is doing. "Of course it's going up. It has gone up since the early 1800s, before the Industrial Revolution, because we're coming out of the Little Ice Age, not because we're putting more carbon dioxide into the air."
"Anthropogenic (man-made) global warming bites the dust," declared astronomer Ian Wilson after reviewing the newest study, now accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of Geophysical Research. The project, called "Heat Capacity, Time Constant, and Sensitivity of Earth's Climate System," was authored by Brookhaven National lab scientist Stephen Schwartz. "Effectively, this (new study) means that the global economy will spend trillions of dollars trying to avoid a warming of (about) 1.0 K by 2100 A.D.," Wilson wrote in a note to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Sunday . . . by Kelly Patterson, Ottawa Citizen : In a landmark case, an American court has ruled that gay couples who tie the knot in Canada can be treated as legally married in the state of New York. Justice Joan Lefkowitz of the New York Supreme Court ruled last week that same-sex marriages performed outside the country are valid, even though gay New Yorkers cannot be legally married in their home state. . . . If the ruling holds up on appeal, “it will mean for all practical purposes, same-sex marriage is legal in the state of New York,” because people can easily cross the border to get married, said Koppelman. While the lower-court ruling is not technically binding on other state courts, it's significant in that “it says you can recognize a (same-sex marriage) even if locally you can't perform it,” and lays out historical examples of that recognition, explains Mark Strasser, a law professor at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, who has written extensively on same-sex marriage . . . Is Rudy's Teflon Gone? Immigration backlash hits Giuliani right in the solar plexus; a Romney spokesman calls his record ‘abysmal’
by Jason Horowitz, The New York Observer: Finally: Rudy Giuliani was caught red-handed. After months of watching him wriggle out of tight spots on issues like abortion and gun control, opponents of the front-running former mayor say that his reversal on immigration policy has finally brought down the mayor’s impenetrable defenses and opened him up to attacks on everything from the consistency of his record, to his personal life, to the veracity of his remarks about Ground Zero. . . . “It’s going to damage him pretty severely,” said Tom Tancredo, a Republican presidential candidate running largely on an anti-immigration platform . . . Giuliani’s problems started when Romney broached the subject of immigration on Aug. 8 by calling New York, under Giuliani, a “poster child for sanctuary cities in the country.” On Aug. 14, Giuliani, anxious to avoid appearing weak on an issue that had contributed greatly to the demise of John McCain’s campaign, boldly told voters in South Carolina that “I promise you, we can end illegal immigration.” It was a bad calculation . . . Illinois GOP County Chairmen Lend Support to Fred Thompson
by Rick Pearson & Monique Garcia (summarized): Straw polls like the Illinois Republicans' inaugural state fair presidential straw poll can admittedly be biased and not reflect the true intent of the party. At the Illinois state fair, fewer than 1,000 ballots cast. Mitt Romney's win, with 40.4%; Fred Thompson second 20%; Ron Paul1 8.9%; Giuliani 11.6%; McCain 4.1%; Huckabee 3%; Sam Brownback 1.1%; Hunter 0.7% and Tom Tancredo .3%. Despite the low-key nature of the straw poll, with none of the Republican presidential contenders in attendance, Romney's Illinois operation sent supporters to Springfield from Chicago's suburbs to vote.
Andy McKenna, the Illinois GOP chairman, cast the free event as more of an entertainment device to generate interest in a moribund state political organization. However the opposite may be said of the secret vote by Illinois Republican County Chairmen. Secret balloting conducted earlier in the day by almost half of the state's Republican county chairmen might have more practical value in determining candidate strength among local organizations charged with getting out the vote in the state's Feb. 5 primary. Among the 48 votes cast by the GOP county chairmen, Fred Thompson, an as-yet unannounced candidate, got 22 votes (46%); Rudy Giuliani second with 13 (27%). Mitt Romney 9 (19%); Mike Huckabee 2 and John McCain and Duncan Hunter each received one vote. . . . Close the loophole for future shoe-bombers / terrorists
by Rosemary Jenks, NumbersUSA: . . .Richard C. Reid - aka the "shoe bomber" - stood in a federal court and defiantly admitted attempting to blow Flight 63 out of the sky, "I'm a member of al-Qaida. I pledge to Osama bin Laden and I'm an enemy of your country, and I don't care." Who gave this murderous fanatic a U.S. visa? Truth be told, no one.Under a loophole in the law called the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), all Reid needed as a British citizen to put himself in a position to murder a plane-full of Americans was to purchase a ticket on a U.S.-bound flight.
. . . Reid was not the only al-Qaida terrorist who exploited VWP. "In addition," said a 9/11 Commission staff report on terrorist travel, "Zacarias Moussaoui, an al-Qaida operative suspected of being primed as a possible pilot in the 9/11 plot, entered the United States Feb. 23, 2001, from London England using a French, 'visa waiver' passport." Moussaoui was arrested in Aug. 2001 for staying longer than the 90 days he was routinely granted when he arrived in Chicago with this French passport. As Moussaoui later admitted in court, he sat in jail for three weeks declining to warn U.S. authorities of the (pending 911) attacks . . . .
Congress started VWP as a pilot program in 1986. It was designed to facilitate tourism and reduce the workload of State Department consular officers who vet foreign nationals applying for visas. Originally, it applied to only eight countries, but was eventually expanded to 27. In 2000, Congress made VWP permanent. Even though VWP aided al-Qaida terrorists Reid and Moussaoui, President Bush announced last fall that he wanted to expand the program and use it to reward our allies in the war on terror with visa-free travel to the United States.
Not surprisingly, that decision flabbergasted former Dept. of Homeland Security Inspector General Clark Kent Ervin. "We ought to be ending this visa-waiver program, not expanding it," he told USA Today. "There's a reason why terrorists are keen to obtain passports from visa-waiver countries: They don't have to undergo extensive background checks." . . . . Congress sided with Bush. It sent him a bill . . . which includes provisions making it easier for countries to join the visa-waiver list. The bill vastly increases the acceptable "visa-refusal" rate for countries added to the visa-waiver list. . . . That's nuts. If Congress is serious about protecting America against terrorist attacks, the Shoe-Bomber Loophole should be closed. . . . US News Political Bulletin: With congressional Democrats still groping for a unified Iraq withdrawal strategy, the eyewitness reports from individual Democratic lawmakers who’ve recently visited Iraq appear to have changed the dynamic in the debate over the war. TheKansas City Star‘s “The Buzz,” for example, reports Democratic Rep. Brian Baird “saw enough progress on the ground that he will no longer vote for binding withdrawal timelines.” Rep. Jerry McNerney “suggested that his trip to Iraq made him more flexible in his search for a bipartisan accord on the war.” Also changing his tune is Rep. Tim Mahoney of Florida, who says the troop increase ‘has really made a difference and really has gotten al-Qaida on their heels.’” As the Washington Post says this morning, “Democratic leaders in Congress had planned to use August recess to raise the heat on Republicans to break with...Bush on the Iraq war.” Instead, “Democrats have been forced to recalibrate their own message in the face of recent positive signs on the security front, increasingly focusing their criticisms on what those military gains have not achieved: reconciliation among Iraq’s diverse political factions.” . . . Gallup Poll - Record Low Approval Rating for Dermocrat Lead Congress
A Gallup poll yesterday showed the Democrat-led Congress' job-approval rating sank to 18%, the lowest rating since Gallup began tracking that public-opinion measurement in 1974. The approval rating dropped nine percentage points since last month as 76% of Americans registered unhappiness with Congress' performance, according to the survey. Voters have not held Congress in such low esteem since Gallup recorded another 18% job-approval rating during the congressional check-bouncing scandal in March 1992 or a 19% rating during crippling gasoline shortages in the summer of 1979. . . .
The poll showed that the negative opinion of Congress is shared across the political spectrum - Democrats gave Congress a 21% job-approval rating, Republicans 18% and independent voters 17% - reflecting impatience with new leadership unable to deliver on promises, including an end to the Iraq war. The nine percentage point drop from last month was a result of further disapproval from Democrats and independents. The rating by Democrats fell 11% points and the rating by independent voters declined 13% points, Gallup said. by Matthew Mosk: Fred Thompson's continuing non-candidacy may have had its advantages . . . But not being a candidate can have its downsides, too. And one that might pose a serious concern is his inability to start gathering the signatures needed to gain a place on various states' primary ballots. Sources inside the Thompson camp acknowledge they could feel some pressure in several states. A September announcement could give them a short window to gather the signatures needed to get his name on the ballot.
Notable among those are Illinois and New York, both of which are due to hold Feb. 5 primaries . . . . Illinois requires each Republican candidate to gather at least 3,000 signatures by Dec. 5. New York requires each Republican gather 5,000 signatures from registered republicans in the state, including at least 100 signatures from at least half of the state's 29 congressional district. New York's election calendar has not been settled yet, but elections officials in Albany predicted those signatures would need to be filed sometime in late November. . . . In Virginia, he'll need at least 10,000 signatures, with a minimum of 400 from each congressional district, by Dec. 14. The Virginia primary is scheduled for Feb. 12. In Michigan, he'll need to collect 11,569 names also by Dec. 14 to get on the ballot for the state's primary, which is currently slated for Feb 26. In Indiana, he'll need to gather 4,500 signatures, with 500 coming from from each of nine congressional districts. Those must be filed by noon on Feb. 12. . . . by Jeff Golimowski CNSNews: If you can get past the border guards and into the United States, you're no longer violating the law, according to a Kansas Court of Appeals decision. The ruling comes after an illegal immigrant, Nicholas Martinez, was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine and endangering a child. . . . Under Kansas law, the charges (and plea bargain) would have landed Martinez on probation. But the judge in the case said the defendant couldn't be put on probation because of his immigration status. "Mr. Martinez is illegally in the country and is in violation of the probation rules right from the start if I place him on probation," . . . quoted Judge Hannelore Kitts . . .. "He has to comply with all the conditions of the probation and he can't do that because he's in violation of the law . . ."
. . . But on appeal, a three-judge panel threw out the sentence, based on an apparent contradiction in U.S. law. While it is illegal to enter the country without the proper documents and permissions, it is not necessarily illegal to be in the country. . . . the court explained that Congress had implicitly created the distinction: "While Congress has criminalized the illegal entry into this country, it has not made the continued presence of an illegal alien in the United States a crime unless the illegal alien has previously been deported," . . . Because the judge hadn't determined whether Martinez had been deported previously, the appeals court ruled she had no legal basis to deny probation, since simply being in the country isn't necessarily a crime. . . . Amnesty International drops neutral stance on abortion
by Patrick Goodenough, CNSNews International Editor: Amnesty International (AI) has gone ahead with a decision to move away from a neutral stance on abortion, a step that will likely prompt Catholics and other pro-lifers to withdraw support for the human rights group's work around the world. The decision was taken at a top-level, closed meeting in Mexico City, and confirmation appeared in a statement posted on the group's website late last week. AI said the week-long international council meeting, which ended Friday, had "affirmed the organization's policy on selected aspects on abortion (to support the decriminalization of abortion, to ensure women have access to health care when complications arise from abortion and to defend women's access to abortion, within reasonable gestational limits, when their health or human rights are in danger), emphasizing that women and men must exercise their sexual and reproductive rights free from coercion, discrimination and violence."Tags:abortion, Amnesty InternationalTo share or post to your site, click on "Post Link". The NEA lists its goals & the Democratic Party agrees
by Phyllis Schlafly: Some critics complain that the issue of education has been conspicuously absent from presidential television debates. But Democratic presidential candidates did sound off with their pro-federal government, pro-spending policies at the annual convention of the National Education Association, and the nation's largest teachers union liked what they heard.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, told delegates that she will fight school vouchers "with every breath in my body." Reiterating the message of her book "It Takes a Village," she called for universal preschool for 4-year-olds. Sen. Barack Obama, D-IL, likewise inveighed against "passing out vouchers." Former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, also announced his opposition to vouchers and proposed that the federal government pay college tuition for all students who will work 10 hours a week. Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) wants to "raise teacher's average minimum wage to $40,000 a year." Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-OH, goes all out for "a universal prekindergarten system that will provide year-round day care for children age 3 to 5." All Democratic candidates look forward to increased federal control of and spending for public schools . . . by Jonathan Mummolo, Washington Post: U.S. Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA) has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery for allegedly pushing an airline employee at Dulles International Airport on Sunday during a dispute over baggage, authorities said. Filner, who represents the San Diego area, "attempted to enter an area authorized for airline employees only" while in the United Airlines baggage claim office and "pushed aside the employee's outstretched arm and refused to leave the area when asked by an airline employee," according to a Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police statement. . . . The female airline employee, whom police did not identify, appeared before a Loudoun County magistrate that evening, and Filner was charged with assault and battery. If convicted, Filner faces up to 12 months in jail and up to a $2,500 fine under Virginia law . . . [Read More]
ARRA comment: Maybe at age 64, Filner can't handle the stress of airport travel or believes he is beyond treating the "little people" with respect. Welcome congressman to the real world! Note that this is the same California liberal who wants all tie up all U.S. defense-related agencies by forcing them to comply with all federal and state environmental laws. Imagine States enforcing their current and future wacko anti-military conceived environmental laws on US Military bases, testing ranges, weapons storage, etc. Next, these State and local agencies would be arresting and charging Federal military members and interfering with required mission activities. by S.A. Miller, Washington Times: Top Senate Democrats have started to acknowledge progress in Iraq, with the chairman of the Armed Services Committee yesterday saying the U.S. troop surge is producing "measurable results." Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan highlighted improved security in Baghdad and al Qaeda losses in Anbar province as examples of success — a shift for Democrats who have mainly discounted or ignored advances on the battlefield for weeks. "The military aspects of President Bush's new strategy in Iraq ... appear to have produced some credible and positive results," Mr. Levin said in a joint statement with Sen. John W. Warner, Virginia Republican, after a two-day visit last week to Iraq.
Mr. Levin joins a growing chorus of Democrats - including 2008 presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin of Illinois - who say the troop surge has produced benefits, but who also bemoan failures of the fledgling Iraqi government they have repeatedly criticized for taking an August vacation. The Democrats' reframing of the war debate helps them avoid criticism for naysaying U.S. military achievements while still advocating a speedy pullout from what they say is a civil war the Iraqi government cannot quell. . . . Washington Post Editorial: The opponents of appeals court nominee Leslie H. Southwick haven't made their case. Before being nominated by President Bush to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, Leslie H. Southwick served for almost 12 years on the Mississippi Court of Appeals, where he participated in thousands of cases spanning the gamut of civil and criminal law. A panel of the American Bar Association unanimously found Judge Southwick to be "well qualified" for the promotion, its highest ranking. Yet congressional opponents have latched on to two opinions that Mr. Southwick joined, but did not write, to argue that he is unfit for the federal appeals post. . . .
Judge Southwick wouldn't have been our first choice for this vacancy. Nor do we like the results in the custody and racial slur cases. But we cannot find fault with Judge Southwick's narrow but ultimately legitimate interpretation of the law in those cases, and we do not find in his record the anti-gay, anti-worker caricature his opponents have drawn. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (CA), the lone Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee to vote in favor of his confirmation, got it right when she concluded that if senators were to examine Judge Southwick's entire career, including his stint as a judge advocate in Iraq, they would find a "qualified, circumspect person." . . . RPA, LITTLE ROCK - Once again today, Hillary Clinton is heading South in another futile attempt to pander to Arkansans and convince voters in this state that she's not a liberal Senator from New York. She will attend three fundraisers and a meeting of Democratic local elected officials, according to media reports. "Hillary Clinton attempts to call her trips to Arkansas a 'homecoming,' but no amount of pandering will change the fact that this liberal Senator is more in touch with voters in her home state of New York," said Republican Party of Arkansas Chairman Dennis Milligan. "Now, Arkansans are now learning that Hillary's records are locked down from public viewing until after the 2008 election - even though she called for more transparency in government just last year," Milligan continued. "We want to know what Hillary Clinton is trying to hide in what's being described as 'Little Rock's Fort Knox.'" Note: Hillary Clinton's visit comes on the heels of recent media reports revealing that over 2 million pages of Hillary Clinton's White House records are being locked down at the Clinton Library in Little Rock. Hillary Attacks & Calls For Transparency In Government, But Her White House Documents Remain In Lockdown Until After '08 Race
Hillary has attacked & called for more "Transparency" & Openness in Government: -"Clinton ... cited a need for more transparency in government." (Paige Hewitt, "Hillary Hits Town With Pocketful Of Promises," Houston Chronicle, 8/12/07) - Hillary criticized the Bush administration for withholding information and resisting "legitimate requests for information." Hillary: " . . . that a tendency of this administration . . . is to withhold information, to resist legitimate requests for information. . ." (Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Press Conference, Washington, DC, 2/14/06)
But over 2 million pages of her White House documents won't be released until after the 2008 election:- "To tourists, it's a place to ogle the 42nd president's golf clubs . . . But to the dozens of reporters, historians . . . who have filed requests for documents from the library's archive, it is Little Rock's Fort Knox." (Glenn Thrush, " Clinton Archive A Tough Request," [New York]Newsday, 3/19/07) - "[N]early 2 million pages of documents covering her White House years are locked up in a building here, obscuring . . . her record as First Lady." (Peter Nicholas, "Clinton's First Lady Records Locked Up," Los Angeles Times, 8/14/07) - "Clinton's calendars, appointment logs and memos are stored . . . in the custody of Federal archivists who do not expect them to be released until after the 2008 presidential election." (Peter Nicholas . . .)
It could be "years" before Hillary's records are made available to the public. - "Asked how long it might be before Hillary Clinton's records are released, the library's chief archivist said it could take years." (Peter Nicholas . . . ) - Legal watch group, Judicial Watch, even sued for ". . . access to Senator Clinton's calendars, phone logs, and office diary during her time as first lady." (Josh Gerstein . . . ) - Judicial Watch . . filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the calendars in April 2006. 'We've been more than patient,' . . . 'There's got to be a way to break this logjam. Hopefully, this lawsuit is it.'" (Josh Gerstein, . . . ) -Jeff Gerth, Clinton biographer and former New York Times reporter: "I haven't received any documents or even a note indicating that they're searching the records."(Glenn Thrush, "Clinton Archive A Tough Request," [New York] Newsday, 3/19/07)
Expert says - Thomas Blanton, Director, George Washington Univ. National Security Archive: "There's no reason why a load of a few hundred FOIA requests should absorb 11 full-time people perpetually."(Peter Nicholas . . .) Paul supporters turn out for Alabama GOP straw poll
by Jamon Smith, Tuscaloosa News: Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Congressman Ron Paul dominated the West Alabama Republican Assembly 2007 Presidential Preference Straw Poll held at the Bryant Conference Center Saturday afternoon. Of the 266 votes casts during the poll, Paul claimed 216, landing him an easy victory. . . . Ron Paul 216 Mitt Romney 14 Duncan Hunter 10 Fred Thompson 9 Rudy Giuliani 7 Mike Huckabee 6 Sam Brownback 2 John McCain 2 Tom Tancredo 0
A statewide survey of likely voters taken [by American Research Group Inc.] between July 30 and August 2 found just 1% of likely Republican voters reporting they’d choose Paul if the election were held that day. Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson led that poll with 31%, followed by Giuliani at 26%. McCain had the third strongest following in that poll, 16%. . . . DeWayne Fowler, president of the West Alabama Republican Assembly, said he thought more supporters of the other Republican presidential candidates would have shown up at the poll, but he’s not surprised that Paul’s dominated the event. “We’re not endorsing anybody, but if one candidate wants to energize and mobilize his voters, then more power to him,” Fowler said . . . Congressmen tell Bush: Back off SPP agenda Lawmakers' letter warns 'stealth' effort to 'harmonize' could undermine security
by Jerome R. Corsi, WorldNetDaily: Twenty-two members of the U.S. House of Representatives – 21 Republicans and a Democrat – are urging President Bush to back off his North American integration efforts when he attends the third summit meeting on the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America next week in Montebello, Quebec. They make it clear that continuing any such agenda at this point would be disregarding growing apprehension in Congress about the plans. "As you travel to Montebello, Canada later this month for a summit with your Canadian and Mexican counterparts, we want you to be aware of serious and growing concerns in the U.S. Congress about the so-called Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) you launched with these nations in 2005," the letter said. . . .
The members also noted in their letter the amendment added by Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., to . . . H.R.3074, the Transportation Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008, prohibiting the use of federal funds to participate in SPP-related working group meetings in the future. The members noted in their letter that, "This vote is an indication of the serious concerns felt by those of us in Congress and by our constituents about this initiative – concerns that will only be intensified if pursuit of the SPP continues out of public view and without congressional oversight or approval." The (members) called upon the president "not to pledge or agree to any further movement in connection with the SPP at the upcoming North American summit."
The letter concluded that, "in the interest of transparency and accountability, we urge you to bring to the Congress whatever provisions have already been agreed upon and those now being pursued or contemplated as part of this initiative, for the purpose of obtaining authorization through the normal legislative process." . . . ARRA Comment: Our thanks to KeepingArkansasLegal for providing a heads up on this news story. The items in "red" are their comments.Today's THV- KTHV: Governor Beebe says the state needs more accurate information on how much its agencies are paying for services for illegal immigrants if there is to be an informed discussion on immigration policy.(It's better than any study he's done!)Beebe says a report released to legislators Monday did not break down the costs of services by an immigrant's legal status. (That's because most of the departments are not allowed to ask about legal status.)The governor says lumping legal and illegal immigrants together doesn't give the complete picture on the cost of illegal immigrants to the state. He calls the discussion among state legislators about immigration policy healthy but says the state has to work with (do nothing with) federal government on these issues. . . . Former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-GA) weighs run for White House
by Jim Galloway, The Atlanta Journal--Constitution: Sam Nunn left the U.S. Senate more than 10 years ago. Since then, the Georgia Democrat, who made his name nationally as a defense-minded hawk, has watched what's happened to the country, and he's more than a bit ticked - at the "fiasco" in Iraq, a federal budget spinning out of control, the lack of an honest energy policy, and a presidential contest that, he says, seems designed to thwart serious discussion of the looming crises. . . . Nunn acknowledged that he - like former Georgia congressman Newt Gingrich - is considering a run for the White House next year. But unlike Gingrich, Nunn would run outside the traditional two-party structure. . . . Nunn said he's been in touch with Unity '08, a group with a goal of fielding a bipartisan or independent ticket for president. . . .
"In a new era in which the chief concern is Islamic jihadism, a world security system built around a nuclear stand-off between the United States and Russia has become "obsolete," Nunn says Ultimately, he said, if there's to be any chance of persuading smaller countries to give up nuclear weapons technology - and keep it out of the hands of increasingly sophisticated terrorists - world powers will have to put themselves on a gradual, verifiable path toward total nuclear disarmament. That includes the United States. . . . "I am frustrated, and clearly frustrated, with the fact that I think my children and grandchildren are not going to have the kind of future they should be having," Nunn said. Political debate has been captured by the extreme wings of both parties, he said, ignoring solutions that can only be found in the middle. . . . As posted on First Amendment Center: The pastor of a conservative Christian church being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service said the threat of losing its tax-exempt status will not stop the church from fighting abortion. “We will continue regardless of what the IRS does,” said Rev. Mark Holick, pastor of Spirit One Christian Center. “We will continue to obey the Lord.” . . . He called the investigation a violation of the church’s First Amendment rights. . . . Doug Ittner, an abortion-rights supporter affiliated with an informal group calling itself the Maggot Punks, told the AP that he filed two complaints as a private citizen with the IRS regarding the church’s signs during the elections. “It is just one more tool,” Ittner said of the IRS. “Might as well get the government to do our work for us, and Spirit One helps by breaking the law.” . . . The Dishonorable John "Jack" Murtha ! [Videos of his actions]
On Friday, we reported the story on the "Media and Terrorist Hoax of the Haditha Massacre" perpetrated by John Murtha and liberal media bias. Today we provide some additional background video on the current behavior of Murtha and his continued dishonorable stance. At a minimum John Murtha should be censured by Congress. It is a shame that he will be drawing a retirements for his inept work in Congress from a government he has continuously betrayed. When he passes someday from this world, if the words "U.S. Marine" appears on his gravestone may it be in the context of "He betrayed the U.S. Marines."
