Liberal Activists Step Up Campaign Against FOX News

FoxNews: Liberal activists are stepping up their campaign against FOX News Channel by pressuring advertisers not to patronize the network. MoveOn.org, the Campaign for America's Future and liberal blogs like DailyKos.com are asking thousands of supporters to monitor who is advertising on the network, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Once a database is gathered, an organized phone-calling campaign will begin, said Jim Gilliam, vice president of media strategy for Brave New Films, a company that has made anti-FOX videos . . . Think No Evil

by Janet Levy: A proposal for federal hate crime legislation is currently wending its way through Congress. H.R. 1592, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007, has already passed the House of Representatives, and is now pending in the Senate. Yet, in these over-heated and volatile times, broadening hate-crime laws is unwise. Such laws magnify and criminalize thoughtless, petty actions, exaggerating their importance, and prosecute those doing nothing more than exercising their personal opinions. Some recent incidents demonstrate how this occurs . . . [Read More]

FCC Chair: Fairness Doctrine Not Needed
Stop Liberal Censorship [Video]

By Jim Abrams, AP: The Federal Communications Commission has no intention of reinstating the Fairness Doctrine imposing a requirement of balanced coverage of issues on public airwaves, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said. Martin, in a letter written this week to Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), and made public Thursday, said the agency found no compelling reason to revisit its 1987 decision that enforcing the federal rule was not in the public interest. Several Democratic lawmakers suggested that Congress take another look at the doctrine after conservative radio talk show hosts aggressively attacked an immigration reform bill when it was on the Senate floor, contributing to its defeat. Martin, in his letter, said government regulation was not needed to ensure public access to a wide range of opinion. "Indeed, with the continued proliferation of additional sources of information and programming, including satellite broadcasting and the Internet, the need for the Fairness Doctrine has lessened even further since 1987," . . . NRSC: Liberal Democrats are at it again. This time, they're calling it "fairness." Democrats want to revive the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" because they think talk radio doesn't represent their liberal views. Senate approves $3 billion for border security
Arkansas Senator Pryor - main Democratic sponsor of the bill

Stephens Washington Bureau: - The Senate on Thursday voted to spend $3 billion to beef up border security by hiring thousands of federal agents and constructing a 700-mile border fence. The funding would pay for 23,000 full-time border patrol agents in an effort that Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) claimed would "help restore American confidence in our immigration system."The measure reflects Republicans' efforts to pass parts of an immigration reform plan backed by President Bush. The broader immigration reform legislation died in the Senate last month. Pryor, the main Democratic sponsor of the bill, said the funding would give the United States "full operational control" over its border with Mexico. The bill passed the Senate 89-1 as an amendment to the 2008 Homeland Security appropriations bill. . . . The funding would be used for four unmanned airplanes, 105 miles of ground-based radar and camera towers and 300 miles of permanent vehicle barriers. It also would be used to purchase 45,000 detention center beds to effectively end the practice of capturing immigrants entering illegally and releasing them back into Mexico. [Read More]

Reading, Writing, and Ramadan

Tony Perkins, FRC: While some American schools are rushing to ban "Christmas" parties and Bible clubs, others are going out of their way to promote prayer in schools. That is, if the prayers are to Allah. In a world where the ACLU is suing Christian students faster than you can say "10 Commandments," it may surprise some that there's a new movement of religious tolerance afoot. Unfortunately, as USA Today points out, this type of religious expression seems to be a one-way street open only to Muslims. As part of this wave of preferential treatment, at least 17 universities have made special arrangements to build foot baths and prayer rooms for Islamic students. In San Diego, an elementary school created an extra recess for Muslim children to pray. The University of Michigan has gone so far as to provide facilities for Islamic students to wash their feet before prayer--all at taxpayer expense! In California, another school hosts a curriculum called "Becoming a Muslim" as part of world history class. Yet when the families of these seventh graders sued the school for violating the ban on religious establishment, they lost. Sadly, this is all part of broader paranoia in America, in which people are more concerned about offending someone than they are about violating the law. This same fear is one of the driving elements in the "hate crimes" debate. ACLU's silence on the matter exposes their anti-Christian agenda. The group, which is all too willing to sue when a Christian student prays silently, seems completely unfazed when another public school uses taxpayer dollars to ensure that Muslims can pray openly on school time during class. America may be the Mecca of diversity, but when it comes to certain schools promoting true religious tolerance, one thing's become clear--the Christian faith need not apply. Liberal Stonewalling Begins Anew On Bush’s Judicial Nominees

by Andrea Lafferty, Traditional Values Coalition: Senate liberals are back to their old tricks in trying to block every qualified judicial nominee that President Bush sends to the Senate for a vote. The latest target is former Mississippi Judge Leslie H. Southwick, who is an Iraqi war veteran. According to media reports, Senator Patrick (Obstruction) Leahy, head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, opposes Southwick for numerous reasons. Among them is the fact that he’s a white southerner. Leahy claims there should be more racial diversity on the federal bench, but he and his leftist allies raged against Judge Janice Rogers Brown, a conservative Christian African-American when she was nominated by President Bush to serve on the DC Circuit Court. The fact is that liberals only want leftist, activist judges on the federal bench – regardless of their race. If they can’t find corruption or incompetence in a nominee, they’ll distort their record or lie about them. That’s the typical strategy used by groups like People for the American Way . . . Hazleton immigrant law voided by judge - Do you agree with Hazelton or the Court?

A federal judge on Thursday struck down Hazleton's tough anti-illegal immigration law, ruling unconstitutional a measure that has been copied around the country. The city's Illegal Immigration Relief Act sought to impose fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and deny business permits to companies that give them jobs. Another measure would have required tenants to register with City Hall and pay for a rental permit. Based on testimony from a nine-day trial held in March, U.S. District Judge James Munley ruled that the act was pre-empted by federal law and would violate due process rights. . . . [Read More] See also: Judge strikes down Hazleton's illegal immigrant law & Judge overturns Pa. city's illegal immigrant ordinance

Your Opinion - leave your comments!
A couple public comments so far:
- Anna Arias, president of the Hazleton Area Latino Assoc: "It is a bittersweet victory. It is sad in the sense that we should be spreading love and unity, and not hatred and division as this has created. This has divided the community."
- Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta: "Sadly, today's decision sends the wrong message to elected officials in Washington and elsewhere. We, the American people, want our cities secured, our borders protected and our citizenship respected. This battle is far from over."
- Fred Thompson, potential GOP presidential candidate: "Think about what this ruling means. Congress has preempted the field, so state and local governments are powerless to act. Then, Congress and the federal authorities do next-to-nothing to prevent illegal immigration, burdening the states and local communities around the country. But those communities cannot act because Congress said they couldn’t. What sense does that make? None. Congress could not have meant to prevent state and local governments from exercising their traditional police and regulatory powers over businesses and landlords to address the problems caused by uncontrolled illegal immigration. ‘Factory Farms’ Take Heat - Lincoln (D-AR) sponsors bill to exempt manure from Superfund

by Aaron Sadler, Times Record, Ft Smith: Large-scale poultry operations in Arkansas generate health and environmental problems that outweigh any benefits, an environmental group claimed in a report released Tuesday. The state ranks third in the number of farms with 500,000 or more broiler chickens sold each year. Two northwest Arkansas counties - Benton and Washington - are in the top 10 counties nationwide, according to USDA data analyzed by the nonprofit Food and Water Watch. The private group lambasted the “factory farm” structure in rural areas across the nation. It claimed manure from large livestock and poultry operation pollutes air and water and poses a significant health risk to neighbors. . . .

Factory farms rely on poorly educated immigrants as workers, he said. “They end up straining the social services of the local community,” he said. “When you drill down and really look at the economic impact of industrial agriculture, it turns out to be a bit of a mirage in that there are costs that are not captured when you look at crude employment figures or overall economic productivity.” Food and Water Watch called for the Environmental Protection Agency to place a moratorium on construction of new factory farms.

The group opposes an effort in Congress to prevent animal waste from being considered a hazardous material under the federal Superfund law. Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) is sponsor of a bill in the Senate to exempt manure from Superfund. She maintains that without the exemption, family farms could be subject to damaging lawsuits, and that research and development of manure as fuel might be held back. . . . [Read More]

Republicans on the Rise!

Robert "Mike" Duncan, Chairman, RNC: The eight most recent public polls show the President's job approval is rising while approval of Congress is plummeting. The four polls that measured job approval for both the President and Congress show the President's ratings are higher. Surveys show Americans give high marks to the economy and that the GOP is regaining its lead on taxes while voters reject Congressional Democrats on earmarks and pork.

Polls show that on Iraq, voters reject Democrats' calls for immediate withdrawal, clearly recognize the consequences of defeat, and are waiting for General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker to report in September. As voters see signs that the surge is working in Baghdad and Anbar, optimism is increasing with more people believing the war was the right thing to do and that the war is going better. Click the following links for their corresponding polls: Presidential Approval and Opposition to Withdrawal from Iraq.

The more people see the clear differences between the policies of Republicans and Democrats, the stronger our position. On Iraq, Republicans want decisions made on recommendations of our military commanders based on conditions on the ground. Democrats seem to pay more attention to the strategic judgments of MoveOn.Org, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore than they do our military commanders in battle. Republicans have offered a plan to balance the budget by freezing growth in discretionary domestic spending to less than 1% and with no tax increases, resulting in a surplus by 2012. Democrats want $205 billion more in spending over the next five years and the largest tax increase in history.

Republicans are working hard to confirm judges who will uphold the Constitution by strictly interpreting the law. Democrats have fallen into their old pattern of obstruction, delay and opposition to the highly qualified conservative judicial candidate the President has nominated. Republicans are working to make certain the nearly 700,000 poor children not covered by the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) get health care coverage, supporting a 20% in funding for SCHIP. Democrats want a 140% increase in spending to move children and families with private health insurance onto government-run health care and would shift the focus from poor children to adults with incomes of up to $83,000 a year. Having failed to have the Federal government take over the health care system all at once, Democrats are now holding approval of SCHIP hostage so they can begin having Washington take control of your health care one big chunk at a time.

Oklahoma City mayor washes hands of North American Union
'It was a pretty stupid thing to get involved with'

by Jerome R. Corsi, WorldNetDaily: Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett has repudiated his signing in 2004 of a document described as "The Declaration of North American Integration." "I do not favor the North American Union," Cornett told WND . . . "It was a pretty stupid thing to get involved with three years ago. I don't necessarily remember what I was thinking at the time, but I can speak for now and I do not favor a North American Union" . . . Cornett told WND that Oklahoma City was not taking any steps to integrate with Mexico and Canada and that Oklahoma City has not declared itself an "inland port" targeted for warehousing containers from international trade coming in through Mexican ports on the Pacific Ocean, as has Kansas City to the north and San Antonio to the south of Oklahoma City. "Oklahoma City is not an inland port for containers coming from China," Cornett stressed. "I am opposed to the extension of the Trans-Texas Corridor into Oklahoma if the whole point is to make it cheaper to transport containers from China coming through Mexican ports." . . . WND asked Cornett if he agreed with Oklahoma Republican state Senator Randy Brogdon that Oklahoma ought to withdraw from the North American SuperCorridor Coalition. "I don't know enough about NASCO to comment," Cornett told WND. Brogdon told WND in a telephone interview that, "I am extremely pleased to know that Mayor Cornett is opposed to the North American Union and the NAFTA superhighway. Cornett is the mayor of Oklahoma City and the NAFTA Superhighway is designed to come right through the middle of Oklahoma City." . . . [Read More]

Guard numbers on border to be halved
Support mission to end entirely by Sept. 2008

by Brady McCombs, Arizona Daily Star: The number of National Guard troops along the Arizona-Mexico border will be trimmed in half by the end of next month. As the presidentially mandated Operation Jumpstart mission begins its second year in support of the U.S. Border Patrol, the number of troops is being reduced as planned. It will be trimmed from 6,000 to 3,000 nationally and from 2,400 to 1,200 in Arizona . . . Since arriving in June 2006, National Guard soldiers have helped free up agents to patrol by manning radios and control rooms, and repairing vehicles, roads and fences. They have also provided extra eyes and ears on the border with observation posts called entrance identification teams stationed along the border on hills or peaks. [Read More]

House moves to free Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting Mexican drug dealer

Free Republic (AP): The House on Wednesday approved a move by conservative Republicans to try to set free two Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a Mexican drug dealer. After a long, emotional debate, the House voted by voice to block the Bureau of Prisons from keeping former agents Ignacio Ramos and Alonso Compean in federal prison. Ramos and Compean are serving 11- and 12-year federal prison sentences, respectively, for the 2005 shooting of Osvaldo Aldrete Davila on the Texas border near El Paso. Ramos is serving time at Yazoo City Federal Correctional Complex about 40 miles northeast of Jackson, Miss. He was severely beaten by other inmates at the prison in February. The case has caused a furor among conservative lawmakers and on talk radio across the country. . . . The move came as House lawmakers debated a bill funding the Justice Department for the budget year beginning Oct. 1. The underlying measure is likely to pass the House later this week, but the Senate has yet to take up a companion measure. . . . [Read More]

AgJOBS: The Senate has another AMNESTY in store

NumbersUSA Action Alert: MANY SENATORS STILL DON'T GET IT Despite the public outcry that helped defeat the Senate's giant amnesty bill in June, several senators are determined to pass a number of smaller amnesties. THE LATEST AFFRONT: AgJOBS AMNESTY. Senators Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Larry Craig (R-ID) are telling everyone that they will offer an "AgJOBS" amnesty bill, which would grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens who work in agriculture.

They have been joined by a chorus of senators determined to ram this amnesty down the American people's throats.Don't their cries of "fruit rotting on the vine" fool you. The H-2A guestworker program provides the agricultural industry with all of the temporary labor it needs. But the H-2A program has wage requirements. The AgJOBS amnesty would relieve employers of that requirement, allowing them to set the wages for the indentured, formerly illegal workers at any level they wish, down to the minimum wage.Since aliens will have to perform agricultural work in order to become permenent residents, they will have no choice but to work at whatever wages and working conditions employers choose to offer.

Once again, the Senate is trying to force an amnesty on the American people for the purposes of driving down wages! Please call your senator on this note today at (202) 224-3121 and drive the message home that they should have learned after the "grand bargain" amnesty bill that rewards for illegal workers and their employers are NOT acceptable to American voters. SAY "NO" TO AgJOBS AMNESTY!

No Left Turns

by Mitt Romney: We can all agree that we need change in America. America’s strength depends on change and innovation. I’m convinced that America is going to change course. The question is which way it is going to go? Are we going to take the sharp left turn Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards represent, or are we going to move forward with the American values that have always made us the strongest nation on earth? I believe we'll do the latter, but it’s going to take a fight. The Democrats’ solutions for change are Big Brother, big taxes and big government. That’s not the right answer, it’s frightening. We need change, but not that kind of change. Stand with me against big government, on the side of the American people, and we’ll be on our way to bringing real conservative change, not Clinton-style big government to Washington.

Newt flirts with Thompson
Gingrich is Newt Inc. -- one part provocateur, one part entrepreneur

by Jonathan Martin, Politics '08: Publicly, Gingrich has been sending signals making clear that a presidential candidacy for him is becoming less likely. Privately, he and some of his closest advisers have been meeting with -- and, in at least one prominent case, going to work for -- the lobbyist-actor and former Tennessee senator. "I've always said it was unlikely I would run," Gingrich said . . . if Thompson "runs and does well, then I think that makes it easier for me not to run." The same day that Gingrich made his comments, his former communications director, Rich Galen, disclosed that he had signed on as an adviser to Thompson's campaign in waiting. . . . Galen termed the coincidence "an unfortunate confluence of events," denying that there was any link. But that was not the only evidence of a possible Thompson-Gingrich alliance in 2008. Gingrich and his wife, Calista, had dinner with Thompson and his wife, Jeri, at the former senator's home in McLean, Va., on July 16 . . .

Still, if he is trying to avoid getting in the race and looking for somebody to get behind, it's not clear why Gingrich continues to keep the possibility of a presidential bid open. One explanation: Keeping speculation churning during the remaining months before the primaries begin is good for business. Since his unceremonious departure from the House in 1998, Gingrich has become Newt Inc. -- one part provocateur, one part entrepreneur, who stirs debate in his party and in journalistic circles, gets Sunday talk show invites and draws audiences on the lecture circuit. A presidential flirtation helps Gingrich further raise his profile, push his ideas and sell his books. . . . Were he to get in, though, Gingrich would face considerable hurdles . . . conduct as speaker, both public and private. . . . he'd likely find himself bogged down in answering questions about the 1990s. "Newt Gingrich would be an immensely polarizing candidate among Republican primary voters," said Emory Univ. professor Merle Black, and in "the extremely unlikely event of a Gingrich nomination, Democrats would relish his candidacy as the second coming of Barry Goldwater." . . . But even if Gingrich doesn't get in and instead throws his support to Thompson (or doesn't endorse at all), his knack for delivering a good quote is likely to keep him in the news . . . [Read More]

On The Global War On Terror -- Basic facts on Al Qaeda in Iraq

President George Bush, at Charleston Air Force Base (7/24): . . . A good place to start is with some basic facts: Al Qaeda in Iraq was founded by a Jordanian terrorist, not an Iraqi. His name was Abu Musab al Zarqawi. Before 9/11, he ran a terrorist camp in Afghanistan. He was not yet a member of al Qaida, but our intelligence community reports that he had longstanding relations with senior al Qaida leaders, that he had met with Osama bin Laden and his chief deputy, Zawahiri.

In 2001, coalition forces destroyed Zarqawi's Afghan training camp, and he fled the country and he went to Iraq, where he set up operations with terrorist associates long before the arrival of coalition forces. In the violence and instability following Saddam's fall, Zarqawi was able to expand dramatically the size, scope, and lethality of his operation. In 2004, Zarqawi and his terrorist group formally joined al Qaida, pledged allegiance to Osama bin Laden, and he promised to "follow his orders in jihad." Soon after, bin Laden publicly declared that Zarqawi was the "Prince of Al Qaida in Iraq" -- and instructed terrorists in Iraq to "listen to him and obey him." It's hard to argue that al Qaida in Iraq is separate from bin Laden's al Qaida, when the leader of al Qaida in Iraq took an oath of allegiance to Osama bin Laden.

According to our intelligence community, the Zarqawi-bin Laden merger gave al Qaida in Iraq -- quote -- "prestige among potential recruits and financiers." The merger also gave al Qaida's senior leadership -- quote -- "a foothold in Iraq to extend its geographic presence ... to plot external operations ... and to tout the centrality of the jihad in Iraq to solicit direct monetary support elsewhere." The merger between al Qaida and its Iraqi affiliate is an alliance of killers -- and that is why the finest military in the world is on their trail. Zarqawi was killed by U.S. forces in June 2006. He was replaced by another foreigner -- an Egyptian named Abu Ayyub al-Masri. His ties to the al Qaida senior leadership are deep and longstanding. He has collaborated with Zawahiri for more than two decades. And before 9/11, he spent time with al Qaida in Afghanistan where he taught classes indoctrinating others in al Qaida's radical ideology.

After Abu Ayyub took over al Qaida's Iraqi operations last year, Osama bin Laden sent a terrorist leader named Abd al-Hadi al Iraqi to help him. According to our intelligence community, this man was a senior advisor to bin Laden, who served as his top commander in Afghanistan. Abd al-Hadi never made it to Iraq. He was captured, and was recently transferred to the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. The fact that bin Laden risked sending one of his most valued commanders to Iraq shows the importance he places on success of al Qaida's Iraqi operations. According to our intelligence community, many of al Qaida in Iraq's other senior leaders are also foreign terrorists. They include a Syrian who is al Qaida in Iraq's emir in Baghdad, a Saudi who is al Qaida in Iraq's top spiritual and legal advisor, an Egyptian who fought in Afghanistan in the 1990s and who has met with Osama bin Laden, a Tunisian who we believe plays a key role in managing foreign fighters. Last month in Iraq, we killed a senior al Qaida facilitator named Mehmet Yilmaz, a Turkish national who fought with al Qaida in Afghanistan, and met with September the 11th mastermind Khalid Shaikh Muhammad, and other senior al Qaida leaders.

A few weeks ago, we captured a senior al Qaida in Iraq leader named Mashadani. Now, this terrorist is an Iraqi. In fact, he was the highest ranking Iraqi in the organization. Here's what he said, here's what he told us: The foreign leaders of Al Qaida in Iraq went to extraordinary lengths to promote the fiction that al Qaida in Iraq is an Iraqi-led operation. He says al Qaida even created a figurehead whom they named Omar al-Baghdadi. The purpose was to make Iraqi fighters believe they were following the orders of an Iraqi instead of a foreigner. Yet once in custody, Mashadani revealed that al-Baghdadi is only an actor. He confirmed our intelligence that foreigners are at the top echelons of al Qaida in Iraq -- they are the leaders -- and that foreign leaders make most of the operational decisions, not Iraqis. . . .

Here's the bottom line: Al Qaida in Iraq is run by foreign leaders loyal to Osama bin Laden. Like bin Laden, they are cold-blooded killers who murder the innocent to achieve al Qaida's political objectives. Yet despite all the evidence, some will tell you that al Qaida in Iraq is not really al Qaida -- and not really a threat to America. Well, that's like watching a man walk into a bank with a mask and a gun, and saying he's probably just there to cash a check. You might wonder why some in Washington insist on making this distinction about the enemy in Iraq. It's because they know that if they can convince America we're not fighting bin Laden's al Qaida there, they can paint the battle in Iraq as a distraction from the real war on terror. If we're not fighting bin Laden's al Qaida, they can argue that our nation can pull out of Iraq and not undermine our efforts in the war on terror. The problem they have is with the facts. We are fighting bin Laden's al Qaida in Iraq; Iraq is central to the war on terror; and against this enemy, America can accept nothing less than complete victory. . . . [Read Complete Speech]

A Child's Right To A Father And Mother

by Phyllis Schlafly: Debates about same-sex marriage and gay adoptions always include the argument that a child has the right to both a father and a mother. If that is true, why is a child usually deprived of that right when heterosexual couples divorce? It would seem that maintaining the father's love and authority would be crucial when a child's life is turned upside down by divorce. Yet, family courts routinely deprive children of one of their parents, usually the father, restricting his time with his child to about six days a month. The courts pompously assert they are invoking "the best interest of the child," but how can it be in the best interest of children to make them forfeit one parent? . . . [Read More]

The Victory Caucus - Featured WebSite!

Dr. Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: The Victory Caucus website is not an ARRA partner but it is now added to the list of Editor's Picks links. I hope readers will visit this site which helps citizens to understand what is really going on with our war effort. The site presents an aggregation of official US sources like MNF-Iraq, DoD, and CENTCOM, as well as key bloggers who are reporting from Iraq. See the map of major operations or visit the library of official documents: Weekly State Dept. status reports; transcripts of DoD briefings, etc. Our country is at a critical time for the war effort: just as we are seeing real signs of progress on the ground in Iraq, defeatists in both parties are stepping up their efforts to push for a swift withdrawal. This website seeks to counter this defeatism and to give the brave men and women of our armed services the time they need to win the war on the ground.

Why is the base not rallying behind a candidate?

by Bobby Eberle, GOPUSA: . . . Why is the base not rallying behind a candidate? Some say it's early, and it is. But with the front-loading of the primaries, it's only a few more months until this race could be decided. Some say it's because every candidate has some sort of negative... something that falls short of conservative expectations. This is also true, but when have we ever had a "perfect" candidate? I believe the answer is never. The main problem right now can be summed up in one word: betrayal. The conservative base feels betrayed by its leaders and office holders. The rise of the Republican Party occurred through the belief and promotion of conservative values and policies. Republicans won races, and it was their mandate to put these policies into action. . . . Yes, conservatives feel betrayed, but the ball is in our court. If we sit back and do nothing, the Left will win. If that happens, the country loses. We must get ready for action, but this time, the play book is different . . . [Read More]

Embryonic Experimentation: A Hard Cell

from FRC Action: For all the controversy surrounding the Missouri ballot initiative on embryonic stem cell (ESC) experiments last November, it appears that the state could have saved itself the trouble. Although voters agreed to modify the state constitution to protect such experiments, recent reports suggest that few may desire to conduct it. Due to the lack of success with ESC and the ethical headaches surrounding it, two major entities have abandoned the research altogether. According to The Washington Post, the founders of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research have decided to slash its $300 million ESC expansion project because of the growing opposition to experiments that destroy human embryos. Another prominent hub for ESC, the Univ. of Missouri, lost its $150 million research center when lawmakers voted to pull the venture's funding. And the pullback isn't limited to the U.S. A former top executive of ES Cell International in Singapore says that the company's investors are impatient with the lack of progress on ESC and no longer want to back the experiments after they failed to "create a clinical product." Perhaps the changing ESC landscape will help break Congress of its stubborn demands for more funding and also serve as a valuable lesson for states engaged in a similar debate. Morally paralyzed

by Thomas Sowell: "Moral paralysis" is a term that has been used to describe the inaction of France, England and other European democracies in the 1930s, as they watched Hitler build up the military forces that he later used to attack them. It is a term that may be painfully relevant to our own times. It is a term that may be painfully relevant to our own times. Back in the 1930s, the governments of the democratic countries knew what Hitler was doing — and they knew that they had enough military superiority at that point to stop his military buildup in its tracks. But they did nothing to stop him. Instead, they turned to what is still the magic mantra today — "negotiations." . . .

The Iranian leaders are not going to stop unless they get stopped. And, like Hitler, they don't think we have the guts to stop them. Incidentally, Hitler made some of the best anti-war statements of the 1930s. He knew that this was what the Western democracies wanted to hear - and that it would keep them morally paralyzed while he continued building up his military machine to attack them. Iranian leaders today make only the most token and transparent claims that they are building "peaceful" nuclear facilities - in one of the biggest oil-producing countries in the world, which has no need for nuclear power to generate electricity. Nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran and its international terrorist allies will be a worst threat than Hitler ever was. But, before that happens, the big question is: . . . Are we morally paralyzed, perhaps fatally? . . . [Read More]

Immigration Deception Reveals SPP Threat to America

by John Lewandoski, Family Security Matters: When the common sense approach to a public issue is conspicuously avoided by Washington power brokers, it’s a good time to suspect ulterior motives. Such is the case with our Mexican border and why it “can’t” be secured. Bottom line: border control is not designed to remedy the security problem. Rather, the border is designed to be eliminated.

Unnoticed by much of mainstream America, there is an unholy cabal that’s slithering past them. Among the geo-economic power elite in Washington, with our President at the core, is an effort that if not averted will, by 2010 or thereabouts, lead America into a hardened amalgam of tri-national partnership, and eventually into international organization. The result of this could, and more likely will, be the abolishment of our Constitution and national sovereignty; i.e., America in name, but a “nation-less” country. It appears that Mr. Bush doesn’t want a common border between Mexico and the U.S., and thus is doing his best to win and maintain favor with the Mexican government and its people, who have everything to gain by border dissolution.

A recent and firm clue that the President is willing to go to extreme ends . . . . it’s the

Cozy With 'La Raza'

by Investor's Business Daily: Election 2008: If a GOP candidate sought votes from a white group calling itself the "National Council of the Race," he'd rightly be shunned as a racist. But let Democrats do the same and they're called "progressive." The difference, of course, is that in the latter case both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were appearing before the National Council of La Raza ("The Race"), a radical Latino group. Trolling for votes, Obama pandered to La Raza's convention in Miami over the weekend, selling himself as one who marched alongside Latinos at last May 1's illegal immigrant amnesty rallies. Clinton, by contrast, insisted she was "at home" among the La Raza crowd, having hired a top La Raza official, Raul Yzaguirre, as her national co-chair. . . .

The irony is that La Raza is no ordinary organization. . . The organization has been around since the 1960s, with many name changes. . . La Raza is not only the loudest proponent of illegal immigration in the U.S. It fosters ethnic separatism in schools. It runs Hugo Chavez-type handouts for indigents and has ties it refuses to renounce to fringe groups like MEChA, whose own slogan is derived from the rhetoric of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro: "Through the race, everything; outside the race, nothing." Today's La Raza is a $52 million not-for-profit group that lives off congressional earmarks, shakes down big corporations like WalMart and Bank of America . . . for financial support, and has made illegal immigration and ethnic separatism its leading agenda. . . . What matters to La Raza is amnesty for illegals, if not through the Senate, then through the 1960s tactic of silencing opponents by smearing them as racist.

. . . Obama stood out as the most willing race-baiter, his Chicago activist experience coming in handy. He denounced immigration bill foes as "both ugly and racist in a way we haven't seen since the struggle for civil rights." It's pure charlatan logic. The illegal immigration issue is about whether to reward foreign invaders who've broken the law, just because there are 13 million of them. Obama should know that there are also 300 million other Americans of every skin color and ethnicity -- including Latinos -- who oppose amnesty and resent efforts to intimidate them through charges of racism. Americans have already shown they won't be intimidated. They believe in the rule of law . . .[Read More]

Dems want to raise tax on cigars 20,000%
Sen Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) is sponsoring the bill.

By Though Mechanics: A measure making its way through the halls of Congress would not only raise the tax on cigarettes and cigars, it would raise the tax on some cigars through the roof. Cigarettes, which account 95 % of tobacco tax collections, are the main focus of the bill. Federal taxes on a pack would jump from 39-cents to $1. As for cigars, currently the federal government levies a flat tax of 5-cents per cigar. If the proposed legislation passes, it would increase the tax up to $10 per cigar, depending on the price of the cigar. In some cases that would be an increase of up to 20,000 %.

Under measure being considered, a cigar would be taxed at 53 % of its wholesale price. For example, if a cigar costs $5 now, under the new tax plan the price would increase by more than half - to just over $7.50. A cigar that costs $20 would be taxed $10 under the new plan. . . . If the measure passes, the outlook appears bleak for cigar smokers and makers particularly in Florida, where thousands make their living off cigars, and in Latin nations where most cigars are rolled. “The actual impact on this is probably 500,000 jobs,” said Christian Eiora of Camacho Cigars. “And these are the people, if they don’t have a job, these people will end up crossing the border and adding to the immigration problem we have now.” . . . Congress plans to use the revenues from the new cigar tax to help fund healthcare for low income children. . . . [Read More] See also: Cigar tax: A job killer ARRA Editor: If they get their way and fund the healthcare for low income children with Cigar taxes, what are they going to do when people stop smoking Cigars - tax the rest of us to cover this program? Also, who's going to pay for the loss of 500,000 jobs? [More unemployed illegals on the way to the U.S.] Blanche Lincoln is fooling no one. She is for restriction of free speech by Christians & Radio Talk show hosts, for amnesty and legalization of illegal aliens, for federal funding to support illegal immigrants, against the war on terrorism, wants to repeal the Bush tax breaks and now seeks to tax 50,000 Americans out of work by adding this 20,000% tax on Cigars. I don't smoke but Lincoln and the other tax happy liberals will soon get around to the things that we all like. Taxpayers Unite - this is not just a Cigar tax issue!

Arkansas Rep. Marion Berry (D) Cashing In on Federal Service
GAO Reveals U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) receives farm subsidies under maiden name

by The Truth in Arkansas Politics: Recent coverage about farm subsidies for minority farmers got us thinking. Where is the outrage over Marion Berry cashing in on his position in Congress? Consider if you will, between 1996 and 2000, farm and land-holding companies that Berry owns with relatives in eastern Arkansas have received $750,449 in federal crop subsidies, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture records. I wonder if it is a coincidence that Berry was elected in 1996 and has served on the Agriculture Commitee ever since. I just don't see why no one has investigated this clear conflict of interest?

Inconsistencies in Federal Conflict-of-Interest Rules Of the three branches of the federal government, Congress has the fewest prohibitions on conflicts of interest and acts of self-dealing. . . . Members of Congress are not required to divest themselves of any financial interest, even if that interest is subject to their official oversight and influence. Nor are they required to recuse themselves from voting on issues that may harm or benefit the personal investment interests of themselves or their relatives. Funny how the Democrats in Congress are always pointing the finger at the Bush Administration when in fact it is Congress that has such loopholes in profiting of their service. . . . Subsidies for Deceased Farmers - GAO reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) distributed $1.1 billion in subsidies over the past seven years to the estates or companies of deceased farmers. . . . The resistance to agriculture reform is partially explained by the conflicts of interest that exist between policymakers and the farm subsidy program. The Heritage Foundation’s Ron Utt writes that many members of Congress benefit directly from the program; . . . Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) receives subsidies under her maiden name, Blanche Lambert . . . The waste and abuse in the farm program, coupled with its economic ramifications, hurts taxpayers and the economy. The GAO report is a timely reminder of the importance of agriculture reform.

A Question of Priorities…

by Boozman Press Office: It would seem the Democrat leaders of the House and Senate have their priorities set, and not exactly in order…

MoveOn candlelight rally at the Capitol?
Yes.
“Close to 300 anti-war activists participated in the MoveOn.org-sponsored candlelight vigil Tuesday night to hear leading congressional Democrats blast Senate Republicans for holding up a vote on troop withdrawal from Iraq. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, and Sen. Carl Levin, D-MI, stood on stage surrounded by close to 75 congressional colleagues.” (
Fox News, 7/18/07)

Meet with leader of Vets for Freedom? No.
“Five days in advance of today’s events, Vets for Freedom meeting requests - for 5 minutes - were submitted to the Majority Leader and the Speaker of the House. Repeated attempts were made to contact and meet with the Democratic leadership. ‘In the end, they made a disappointing decision to decline meeting with veterans who have first-hand knowledge of the situation on the ground’ said Pete Hegseth, an Iraq War veteran and executive director of Vets for Freedom.” (

UCA President Lu Hardin praises Mike Huckabee

University of Central Arkansas President and former Head of the Arkansas Dept of Higher Education, Lu Hardin pledged support to Mike Huckabee. Hardin said Huckabee could work better with Congress than Hillary Clinton. Hardin was a former Democrat Arkansas state senatorfor 14 years when Bill Clinton was governor. He was chairman of the Senate Education Committee and also served on the Joint Budget Committee and Legislative Council. He chaired the Arkansas Advisory Council for Vocational Education and served 12 years as a Professor of Legal Studies at Arkansas Tech University. In addition, he was a trial attorney for 10 years. In 1996 he lost a Democratic primary race for U.S. Senate in 1996. Hardin was appointed by Gov. Huckabee as Director of the AR Dept of Higher Educ. for six years, Hardin switched to the Republican Party the year he was appointed to DHE. Hardin has served as UCA president five years.

Hardin described Bill Clinton as a "friend of education," but then identified that Mike Huckabee 10 years were marked by successful education reforms. "The SmartStart program for elementary school students was instrumental in improving test scores. Huckabee vigorously advanced expansion of state-funded college scholarships," he added. "Every governor in the history of this nation ... has claimed to be an education governor," Hardin said. "Mike Huckabee, truly, substantively, has been an education governor." Hardin identified that Huckabee isn't a polarizing figure who has high unfavorable ratings in national polls. "If Mike Huckabee were president of the United States, I believe Sen. Reid and others could work with him and talk with him and unify more than divide," Hardin said. [Source: Huckabee Campaign Blogger & Press Conference]

Fairness Fantasies

by Victor Davis Hanson, The Washington Times: Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, caused a stir recently when she criticized talk radio for its role in stopping the recent immigration bill. Talk radio, she lectured, "pushes people to... extreme views without a lot of information."Mrs. Feinstein then suggested it might be time to bring back the "Fairness Doctrine, repealed in 1987, that mandated private radio stations devote time to all points of view in discussions of controversial topics. Unfortunately, Mrs. Feinstein chose Orwellian logic: "I remember when there was a fairness doctrine, and I think there was much more serious correct reporting to people." One wonders what Mrs. Feinstein meant by "correct." Correct to whom? Democratic senators, a government auditor or New York Times editors? Aside from the central issue of stifling free speech, there are a number of things wrong with Mrs. Feinstein's desire to have the government arbitrate what is "fair" and "correct" on your car radio . . . Black ministry leader challenges Obama's sex-ed message

OneNewsNow: Age-appropriate sex education for kindergarteners is prompting a black Christian ministry leader to speak out against presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama (D-IL). Dean Nelson, executive director of the Network of Politically Active Christians, is calling Obama's views on sex and abortion out of touch with those of mainstream Americans. This remark follows Senator Obama's recent address to Planned Parenthood in which he stated that sex education for kindergarteners, provided it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do." Obama also affirmed his healthcare proposal would include universal abortion coverage. Nelson says Obama has a radical view of what "age-appropriate" sex education should entail . . . [Read More]

Outrageous! - No Speak English - No Rape Trial
Alleged Child Rapist Goes Free Because Court Can't Find Interpreter

FoxNews: ROCKVILLE, Md. — Charges against a man accused of repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl were dismissed last week because the court could not find an interpreter fluent in the suspect's native West African language. Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian native who received asylum in this country and attended high school and community college here, according to The Washington Post, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai.
Click for The Washington Post article. A court-ordered psychiatrist determined that Kanneh, despite his functional facility with English - he originally spoke with detectives in English, The Post reports, needed to have Vai spoken in order to understand the proceedings against him. . . .

Prosecutors can't refile the charges but are considering whether to appeal the judge's ruling for the dismissal. FOX News spoke with a man who claimed to be Kanneh in a five-minute phone conversation on Sunday in English. He said the allegations against him were false and the dismissal of the charges was "a good thing." Asked if the accusations were true, he responded, "I said what I had to say" and hung up. . . . Romney Continues Assault on Democrats

By Phillip Elliot, AP: Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney took aim at Democratic rivals on Sunday, calling them all unprepared to lead the country and comparing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's economic plan to that of Socialist Karl Marx. "It would be helpful to have a person leading the country who understands how the economy works and has actually managed something," the former Massachusetts governor told reporters after a GOP fundraiser. "In the case of the three Democratic front-runners, not one of them has managed even a corner store, let alone a state or a city." . . . "I wanted to focus on the Democrats," he said. "By and large, the best way to further my interest is to let people know what I would do and to distinguish that from what the Democrats would do." . . . [Read More]

Look Out For Another Big Spending Boondoggle

by Phyllis Schlafly: A new grab for power over education now lurking in the corridors of Congress reminds me of a song popular in the Harry James/Frank Sinatra era: "I've Heard That Song Before." Section 3401, inserted by the Senate (but not the House) in the pending America COMPETES Act (S.761), would give us another costly and harmful expansion of the federal education bureaucracy. . . . Section 3401 authorizes the creation of a "statewide partnership" whose powers are unspecified. The "partners" will be at least a dozen politicians and education bureaucrats, plus one lone "representative of the business community," but, of course, no parents. Section 3401’s goals are wrapped in the comforting word "accountability." But the bill never says to whom the schools are to be accountable; clearly, it does not call for accountability to parents or taxpayers. The America COMPETES Act is now in conference. Tell your House Members not to agree to Section 3401 because it will waste taxpayers' money, expand an unnecessary and overbearing bureaucracy, give the Federal Government control of all school curricula, and put information about all children in a government database. . . . D.C. Petitions US Supreme Court to Hear Gun Ban Case

NRA-ILA: On Monday, Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty announced the city will appeal the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit's Parker ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. While it is too early to tell whether the Supreme Court will choose to hear the appeal, Fenty's action possibly sets the stage for a showdown over the meaning of the Second Amendment. Since enacting its gun ban, D.C. has ranked at or near the top of the list of most violent cities in America—often earning the distinction of being the nation's murder capital. Nonetheless, supporters of the law are now mounting a full PR offensive claiming that, without this constitutionally offensive statute, things would have been much worse! Reasonable people realize that the first rule of getting yourself out of a hole is to stop digging. Such rationale, however, is lost on the gun grabbers who think that if a gun control law has failed in its stated purpose (in this case reducing violent crime), the best thing that can be done is to maintain (or often expand) the law . . .
