Thanksgiving 2022 -- National Day of Atonement 2022

Bill Smith, Ozark Guru: I received the following allegory from a friend today.  It has been around the Internet for several month. The earliest I can find is on Jan 21, 2011, when Kevin in California posted it on Free Republic. Based on the comments at the time, it appears to have been written by Kevin. However, if Kevin or anyone else identifies an earlier source, I will give the earlier source credit.

I passed on posting this before. But, this weekend, I am in a funk - a depressed mood - created by the hot weather, the fish not biting, the behavior of our President, and the Senate refusing to even debate the "Cap, Cut and Balance" bill which would have put the U.S. on the read to recovery. At least the hot weather will go away. I am more than tired of our immature president continuously lecturing and his prevarications. And, he is not going away before at least 2012. The Liberal progressives are wrecking our country and their chief helmsman happens to be our current president.

I pray that the following will not be the case in 2022. However, if people and governments keep attacking, restricting and eradicating the use and access to our personal resources and the restricting or removing our freedoms and choices, we may well see that day identified in the below futuristic article. I and many others my age and older know this to be true, because, we can recall when we had less conveniences but we had a whole lot more freedom and liberty. Thus, the following allegory.

Wednesday, November 24, 2022

"Winston, come into the dining room, it's time to eat," Julia yelled to her husband. "In a minute, honey, it's a tie score," he answered. Actually Winston wasn't very interested in the traditional holiday football game between Detroit and Washington.

Ever since the government passed the Civility in Sports Statute of 2017, outlawing tackle football for its "unseemly violence" and the "bad example it sets for the rest of the world," Winston was far less of a football fan than he used to be. Two-hand touch wasn't nearly as exciting.

Yet it wasn't the game that Winston was uninterested in. It was more the thought of eating another TofuTurkey. Even though it was the best type of VeggieMeat available after the government revised the American Anti-Obesity Act of 2018, adding fowl to the list of federally-forbidden foods, (which already included potatoes, cranberry sauce and mince-meat pie), it wasn't anything like real turkey. And ever since the government officially changed the date and name of "Thanksgiving Day" to "A National Day of Atonement" in 2020 to officially acknowledge the Pilgrims' historically brutal treatment of Native Americans, the holiday had lost a lot of its luster.

Eating in the dining room was also a bit daunting. The unearthly gleam of government-mandated fluorescent light bulbs made the TofuTurkey look even weirder than it actually was, and the room was always cold. Ever since Congress passed the Power Conservation Act of 2016, mandating all thermostats-which were monitored and controlled by the electric company-be kept at 68 degrees, every room on the north side of the house was barely tolerable throughout the entire winter.

Still, it was good getting together with family. Or at least most of the family. Winston missed his mother, who passed on in October, when she had used up her legal allotment of live-saving medical treatment. He had had many heated conversations with the Regional Health Consortium, spawned when the private insurance market finally went bankrupt, and everyone was forced into the government health care program. And though he demanded she be kept on her treatment, it was a futile effort. "The RHC's resources are limited," explained the government bureaucrat Winston spoke with on the phone. "Your mother received all the benefits to which she was entitled. I'm sorry for your loss."

Ed couldn't make it either. He had forgotten to plug in his electric car last night, the only kind available after the Anti-Fossil Fuel Bill of 2021 outlawed the use of the combustion engines-for everyone but government officials. The fifty mile round trip was about ten miles too far, and Ed didn't want to spend a frosty night on the road somewhere between here and there.

Thankfully, Winston's brother, John, and his wife were flying in. Winston made sure that the dining room chairs had extra cushions for the occasion. No one complained more than John about the pain of sitting down so soon after the government-mandated cavity searches at airports, which severely aggravated his hemorrhoids. Ever since a terrorist successfully smuggled a cavity bomb onto a jetliner, the TSA told Americans the added "inconvenience" was an "absolute necessity" in order to stay "one step ahead of the terrorists."

Pix via Abigal and Dolly
Winston's own body had grown accustomed to such probing ever since the government expanded their scope to just about anywhere a crowd gathered, via Anti-Profiling Act of 2022. That law made it a crime to single out any group or individual for "unequal scrutiny," even when probable cause was involved. Thus, cavity searches at malls, train stations, bus depots, etc., etc., had become almost routine. Almost.

The Supreme Court is reviewing the statute, but most Americans expect a Court composed of six progressives and three conservatives to leave the law intact. "A living Constitution is extremely flexible," said the Court's eldest member, Elena Kagan. " Europe has had laws like this one for years. We should learn from their example," she added.

Winston's thoughts turned to his own children. He got along fairly well with his 12-year-old daughter, Brittany, mostly because she ignored him. Winston had long ago surrendered to the idea that she could text anyone at any time, even during Atonement Dinner. Their only real confrontation had occurred when he limited her to 50,000 texts a month, explaining that was all he could afford. She whined for a week, but got over it.

His 16-year-old son, Jason, was another matter altogether. Perhaps it was the constant bombarding he got in public school that global warming, the bird flu, terrorism or any of a number of other calamities were "just around the corner," but Jason had developed a kind of nihilistic attitude that ranged between simmering surliness and outright hostility.

It didn't help that Jason had reported his father to the police for smoking a cigarette in the house, an act made criminal by the Smoking Control Statute of 2018, which outlawed smoking anywhere within 500 feet of another human being.

Winston paid the $5,000 fine, which might have been considered excessive before the American dollar became virtually worthless as a result of QE13. The latest round of quantitative easing the federal government initiated was, once again, to "spur economic growth." This time they promised to push unemployment below its years-long rate of 18%, but Winston was not particularly hopeful.

Yet the family had a lot for which to be thankful, Winston thought, before remembering it was a Day of Atonement. At least he had his memories. He felt a twinge of sadness when he realized his children would never know what life was like in the Good Old Days, long before government promises to make life "fair for everyone" realized their full potential.

Winston, like so many of his fellow Americans, never realized how much things could change when they didn't happen all at once, but little by little, so people could get used to them. He wondered what might have happened if the public had stood up while there was still time, maybe back around 2010, when all the real nonsense began. "Maybe we wouldn't be where we are today if we'd just said 'enough is enough' when we had the chance," he thought. Maybe so, Winston. Maybe so.

Rep. Jeb Hensarling on ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’

WASHINGTON, DC – Delivering the Weekly Republican Address, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) discussed Republicans’ continued efforts to create a better environment for private sector job creation and address America’s debt crisis. Earlier this week, the Republican-led House passed ‘cut, cap, and balance’ legislation that cuts spending, promotes private sector job growth, and avoids a government default. The measure received bipartisan backing in the House and strong support from the American people. Rep. Hensarling is chairman of the House Republican Conference. Following is a video and the text of his comments.
Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) - “Hello, I’m Congressman Jeb Hensarling of Texas and I serve as the chairman of the House Republican Conference.

“You know, unfortunately, every day we hear about some friend or some neighbor who just got laid off or still can’t find a job. The Obama Administration promised its ‘stimulus’ plan would help keep unemployment below eight percent. And instead, unemployment has been above eight percent for 29 straight months, the longest such stretch since the Great Depression. 14 million of our fellow citizens remain out of work. So is it any surprise that the number one question in America remains, ‘where are the jobs?’

“You know, by and large, it’s a lack of confidence in our nation’s future that’s holding our economy back, whether it’s uncertainty about our national debt, uncertainty about taxes, uncertainty about all the regulations and mandates that just keep pouring out of Washington. Small business owners are pleading for the government to stop the reckless spending, balance the budget, and then just get out of the way.

“That’s why the Republican-led House is focused on removing government barriers to private-sector job growth – the kind of growth the President promised with his ‘stimulus’ but failed to deliver. As part of our Plan for America’s Job Creators, we’ve passed a series of jobs bills to cut wasteful Washington spending, rein in needless red tape, and increase American energy production. Our plan includes the budget, written by Chairman Paul Ryan and the Budget Committee that actually pays down our debt over time and paves a path to prosperity and economic growth.

“We Americans are the best entrepreneurs and workers in the world. Given a level playing field, we can compete and win against anyone, anywhere, anytime. But not as long as the policies coming out of Washington remain harmful to jobs. What we need to do is get government out of the way so our economy can get back to creating jobs.

“That’s what makes this debate we’re having about America’s fiscal future so important. Our government has gotten so big, so expensive it’s keeping our economy from recovering as it should. Job creators are fearful that our $14 trillion debt is going to lead to higher taxes, which could harm their businesses and destroy even more jobs.

“Just this week the co-founder of Home Depot, Bernie Marcus, when he was asked what’s the ‘single biggest impediment to job growth,’ he answered: ‘The U.S. government.’ He went on to say: ‘If we don’t lower spending and if we don’t deal with paying down the debt, we are going to have to raise taxes … [and ] when you raise taxes, you cost jobs.’ This sentiment is echoed by small business people and entrepreneurs from coast to coast.

“The American people have long since said, ‘It’s time to quit spending money we don’t have. It’s time to stop borrowing 42 cents on the dollar – much of it from the Chinese – and then sending the bill to our children and grandchildren.’

“Credit rating agencies have spelled out the consequences of failing to heed this message, warning that even if we’re able to avoid any type of default, that may very well downgrade our status unless we take serious action to get our fiscal house in order.

“That’s why the House this week passed ‘cut, cap, and balance’ legislation.

“First, the legislation immediately cuts government spending to 2008 levels. You know, I just haven’t really met anybody who thought government was too small before President Obama became president.

“Second, it puts caps in place to ensure government spending is put on a glide path to be no more than 20 percent of our economy, as it has been on average since World War II.

“Last, but not least, it amends the Constitution to balance the budget once and for all. Every family, small business, and almost every state has to balance their budget. Why should the federal government be any different? And our plan accomplishes this without imposing job-crushing tax hikes.

“Now unfortunately, the Democratic-led Senate tabled this common-sense measure despite the fact it received bipartisan backing in the House and overwhelming support from the American people.

“You know, the Democrats who run Washington are pretty good at telling us what they’re against, but they have yet to put a plan on the table that tells us what they’re for. Speeches and press releases won’t do the trick. It’s time for some action. Senator Reid, if you don’t like our plan to deal with the debt crisis, where is your plan? Mr. President, if you don’t like our plan to deal with the debt crisis, where is your plan?

“If we’re going to avoid any type of default and downgrade – if we’re going to resume job creation in America – the president and his allies need to listen to the people and work with Republicans to cut up the credit cards once and for all.

“It’s time to ‘cut, cap, and balance.’ That’s what will give us jobs, hope, and opportunity.

Spenditol - Stop Bankrupting Our Families!

Regardless of the failure that occurred in the US Senate today, the American public knows that Big Government is Spending Too Much. The following video by Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) makes the point:
The endless cycle of federal debt is a moral issue. The endless cycle of deficits is putting our families at risk and undermining the future for our children and grandchildren. It’s time for the women of America to stand up and demand that the federal government "Stop Bankrupting Our Families!" and get serious about ending the cycle of debt and balance the budget!

Women are responsible for the vast majority of consumer spending. We are forced to balance our family budgets. The government can and must do the same. That’s why Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee is initiating this petition calling on our nation’s leaders to "Stop Bankrupting Our Families" and pursue a real plan to end the deficits and balance the federal budget -- the Cut, Cap and Balance proposal.

They have released the following promotional ad: Spenditol:

Senate Leader Harry Reid Tables Vote On "Cut, Cap and Balance" Bill

“If they [Senate Republicans] want to debate it tomorrow for a period of time, they can do that, but I’m going to — I think this piece of legislation [Cut, Cap & Balance Bill] is about as weak and senseless as anything that has ever come on this Senate floor … The American people should understand that this is a bad piece of legislation. Perhaps some of the worst legislation in the history of this country.” - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)

Harry Reid
and Senate Democrats
Bill Smith, Editor: A few minutes ago, Senate majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) led an effort to table and thereby preventing debate on the bill, considerations of amendment by democrats, or a vote on the "Cut, Cap and Balance" bill. The vote to table was down party lines (51-46) with Republicans voting to consider the bill and Democrats voting to not even consider the bill.

To repeat, Senate democrats, including Reid, could have opened debate and made amendments to the bill which if approved and the bill had passed would have sent it back to the House of Representatives for reconciliation. Obama had vowed to veto the bill if it reached his desk. Thus, Reid refused to allow the representative process to continue and instead chose to align with a dictatorial process.

What and where are Harry Reid's ideas? He has not proposed anything. He has not put forward what his position. He is not the Senator representing Nevada but the "chief lemming" who always waits to do the bidding of the President. The House offered a plan and passed a bill. However, neither Senate Democrats nor the President has put forth a plan. Today, President Obama continues his rhetoric. He has offered no written plan -- no action. He is today holding a "town-hall meeting" at the University of Maryland.

Also after tabling this bill, Sen. Harry Reid reversed himself and cancelled holding sessions in the Senate over the weekend.

Two thirds of the American people like the "Cut, Cap, and Balance" bill. It is not dead - but it is tabled in the Senate, ignored, and falsely maligned. It is now up to the American people to speak up and to force the Senate to take up this bill!

Our Federal Government has a spending problem and the United States is on the verge of becoming Greece. The Senate Democrats have no will to stop this from happening. They appear to have joined Reid as Obama lemmings.

Another Virtue: Cut, Cap, And Balance Doesn't Raise Taxes

When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat. - Ronald Reagan

WH Jay Carney Upset
He Doesn't Know Crap
Today in Washington, D.C. - July 21, 2011:
As House Republicans stand by their "guns" on their "Cut, Cap and Spend" bill, it appears the final quotes below by Sen. Mitch McConnell evidences that he has "felt the heat" and "seen the light" and is pushing for now solely avote on the House Republican bill.

The Washington Post sent out an alert that "President Obama and House Republican leaders are deep in negotiations over a far-reaching plan to save $3 trillion over the next decade, congressional leaders have been told. Aides said the savings would come through sharp cuts in agency spending and changes to popular health and retirement programs -- but without any immediate increase in taxes." Withing minutes the link was killed and the following report was posted.

The Washington Post: "President Obama and House Republican leaders are deep in negotiations over a far-reaching plan to save $3 trillion over the next decade through sharp cuts in agency spending and politically painful changes to popular health and retirement programs, congressional leaders have been told, but there were conflicting accounts on whether the deal would include any immediate increase in taxes. White House spokesman Jay Carney and House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-OH) quickly issued statements saying the two sides are not close to any agreement. Aides to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also said they were unaware of an imminent deal."

As the writing of this post, Speaker John Boehner just spoke with Rush Limbaugh and said there is no secret deal and he is keeping the conversation position open.  Boehner shared he is 100% behind "Cut, Cap and Balance Bill."  However, he admitted that he believed a fall back plan is needed if the bill does not pass the Senate and that we do not want to be in "uncharted waters" of having a default on the debt. Bohener said, "The President has not put a plan on the table." Rush expressed his concern that Republicans will be blamed verses the president who has failed in his responsibility and that some see Speaker Boehner "as the life line" to Obama's re-election." Boenher responded a family teaching that "if you do the right thing for the right reasons, good things will follow."

The Senate began consideration of the motion to proceed to H.R. 2560, the Cut, Cap, and Balance bill.  If no agreement is reached today to hold an earlier vote on the bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is expected to file cloture on the motion to proceed and have a cloture vote on Saturday.

Yesterday, the Senate voted  97-2 to pass H.R. 2055, the Military Construction-Veterans Affairs (Milcon-VA) appropriations bill. H.R. 2055 appropriated $72.5 billion.  Prior to final passage, the Senate voted 69-30 to table an amendment from Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) requiring the adoption of a budget resolution before funding in the bill could be spent. Also tabled, by a vote of 69-30, was an amendment from Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) which would have required veterans receiving benefits for injuries caused by Agent Orange to adhere to a stricter standard for causation to get benefits.

As the Senate begins debate on the House-passed Cut, Cap, and Balance bill today, Senate Republicans are calling on Democrats to follow through on their past statements in support of cutting spending, capping spending, and balancing the budget by supporting the Cut, Cap, and Balance bill.

Speaking this morning, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell said, “This means that Senators will now have the opportunity to go on record either in support of balancing our books or against it. This is an opportunity to take a stand. It’s an opportunity to say that a government which borrows more than 40 cents for every dollar it spends is not sustainable, and needs to change its ways. It’s an opportunity to stand with those who believe that Washington needs to heal its addiction to spending now, not make more false promises of spending restraint later. The President’s veto threat on this legislation is telling. Many of us learned a long time ago to pay more attention to what this President does than what he says. And anyone who’s witnessed his reckless spending habits over the past two and a half years, or sat across the negotiating table with him over the past few weeks, could be forgiven for being skeptical of his recent attempts to come across as a fiscal moderate. I’ll just say this: There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that this President is as deeply committed to a government we can’t afford as he was on Inauguration Day.”

Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman John Thune added, “If in fact we fail to act to get spending and debt under control and to put us on a sustainable fiscal course, the next generation is going to pay a powerful price for our irresponsibility. And I would submit again to my colleagues, Mr. President, that this is fundamentally a spending issue. A lot of folks have talked about the need for more revenue. The president talks about wanting more revenue. . . . Many of us believe . . .  that we don’t have to raise taxes on the American people or American small businesses to solve what is inherently and fundamentally a spending problem. Now, if we want to balance our budget, it means we’ve got to get spending under control.”

And Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) argued, “I have watched the president give press conferences, I have watched the president give speeches, but I have yet to see a plan from the president. And with all due respect to my colleagues in the other party here in the Senate, I haven’t seen a plan from them either. They are the majority party; they control this chamber. They control the Senate. And I haven’t seen a plan from them. A moment ago we heard this talk of, ‘We have to compromise’—it’s really hard to compromise when the other side doesn’t have a plan. What do you compromise on? . . . You can’t compromise if only one person is offering plans. There is only one plan that has been voted on by any house to deal with this issue, and it’s the one we’re on right now: Cut, Cap and Balance.”

Sen. Rubio challenged Democrats, saying, “Why don’t you vote to proceed to Cut, Cap and Balance? Proceed to this bill so we could have a debate on this bill and so you could offer your ideas on this bill. This is the perfect opportunity to do it. Let’s stop negotiating in the media and through press conferences and start doing it here on this floor, which is what people sent us here to do. And I hope that that’s what will happen.”

As Leader McConnell said, “Cut, Cap, and Balance cuts spending now, caps it in the future, and only raises the debt limit if it’s accompanied by a constitutional amendment to balance the federal budget. This is what America wants. It’s what Washington needs. All we need is 20 Democrats to join us. At least 23 of them have led their constituents to believe they’d fight for a balanced budget amendment. The White House has called for a balanced approach in this debate. This bill doesn’t just suggest balance. It mandates it. So I strongly urge my Democratic friends to join us in supporting this legislation.”

He continued, “Let me note another virtue of the Cut, Cap, and Balance Plan: it doesn’t raise taxes. . . . The reason we’ve got a debt crisis is that government spends every cent it gets — and then some. Sending Washington more money will not solve that problem, it will enable it. Our tax system isn’t perfect. But until Washington can prove that it’s responsible with our tax dollars, we shouldn’t be sending it more of them. This is why Republicans have focused on cuts in this debate, and that’s why every one of us — Democrat and Republican — should support Cut, Cap, and Balance.”

Feds Giving Away US Borrowed Dollars To Build Churches, Sewers and Internet Service in Foreign Countries

The following video was released over 4 months ago. It shows info about $770 million being spent to save mosques in Egypt; millions to rebuild mosques in Cypress, and providing tax-payer dollars to establish Internet centers in foreign countries. With the present discussions on the federal deficit and Federal spending, should we (the citizens of the United States) be paying to rebuild Foreign religious buildings, sewers, and providing Internet cafes in foreign countries? Ask yourself, how many U.S Churches get in Federal aid to rebuild their buildings? (Hint: None)

As of yesterday, the U.S. was borrowing 42% (42 cents) of each dollar it spends. This negative situation gets worse everyday with each dollar the Federal spends or gives away. That means, we are giving away money to non-U.S.projects and to be able to do so, we are borrowing money to give it away. Then, we must pay the money back with interest on that borrowed money.

The present administration is using Compressional authorized programs like the Ambassadors Fund to do this. Past administrations have done the same for other projects. Maybe this was okay when the United States had control of our spending and the economy, and we were not borrowing to pay the debt. We can no longer afford to be "nice ambassadors."

We are broke! We should not be borrowing and taking the money from future citizens to give to these foreign projects. In fact, if our economy does not survive, we will not be able to help any other country.

Let demand a stop to this insanity. CUT this spending. What is your opinion? Should we continue to borrow to give away or should we stop U.S. Aid projects to rebuild Mosques or other religious buildings in foreign countries and establishing Internet for others in foreign countries?

The following video was an investigative report by WBSTV Channel 2:

Earth to Harry Reid: The "Gang of 234" Shows Cut, Cap, and Balance IS the Path Forward

Disclosure: Goofy U.S Senate Gang Photo
had too many Tax Tats and Evoked Rage
Today in Washington, D.C. - July 20, 2011:
The Senate resumed consideration of H.R. 2055, the Military Construction-Veterans Affairs (Milcon-VA) appropriations bill.

At noon, the Senate will vote on an amendment to the bill from Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) which would require the adoption of a budget resolution before funding in the bill could be spent.

As noted previously, last night, House Republicans passed their Cut, Cap and Balance bill by a bipartisan vote of 234-190. Also, addressed was the Senate Gang of 6, trying to broker a separate deal with the president. While the term "Gang" sounds bad, it may be appropriate when a few big heads believe they should run roughshod over the rest of the elected Senators and House members elected by the people. If things have deteriorated to Chicago Style politics of Barack Obama, it is time for some drastic changes. An appropriate term for the Gang's plan was coined today by Eric Erikson at RedState: Gangrene Plan - "The Gang of 6 plan is intended to play a role in the debt ceiling debate by giving the McConnell-Reid-Pelosi Pontius Pilate Act more life to get passed until the Gangrene Plan can take affect."

The Hill reports that Senator Harry Reid’s requested that Speaker John Boehner send him a “path forward” in the debt debate and claiming that they have some nebulous plan. Maybe he is referring to the Senate Gang or even the former McConnell plan as showing a path for the Senate. One thing is certain, Reid doesn't have a plan other than doing what the President wants.  Reid was re-elected by "hook and crook" via the efforts of Barack Obama. The citizens of Nevada have a Senator in name only who is too busy playing Mini-Me to Mr. Teleprompter.

This morning, Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) tweeted "Gang of Six Plan? Try the Gang of 234 Plan, #CutCapBalance", and issued the following statement, “In case Senator Reid didn’t notice, a bipartisan ‘Gang of 234’ just sent him the way forward. It’s called the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act. This is the only plan that can fundamentally solve our debt problem, and it is waiting for Senator Reid to bring up on the Senate floor for an up-or-down vote. The House made its position in the debt debate crystal clear. It’s Cut, Cap, and Balance.”

Right on Congressman! Why would 6 Senators trade the properly represented position of 234 Representatives to support 1 President who has taken us to the abyss of economic ruin?  Obama's prior trump card, "it's Bush's fault" was worn out long ago. He and his White House minions, Czars and bureaucrats have done more damage in two years and seven months than considered possible by people who are responsible and ethical. Just shows what can happen when unscrupulous and unqualified people are allowed to run the Ship of State.

The AP noted  that the House “voted Tuesday night to slice federal spending by $6 trillion and require a constitutional balanced budget amendment to be sent to the states” before the debt ceiling could be raised. The story notes, “The legislation, dubbed ‘Cut, Cap and Balance’ by supporters and backed by tea party activists, would make an estimated $111 billion in immediate reductions and ensure that overall spending declined in the future in relation to the overall size of the economy. It also would require both houses of Congress to approve a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and send it to the states for ratification. The amendment itself would require a supermajority vote in both houses of Congress for any future tax raises.”

According to the Senate minority leaders office, Senate Republicans are pushing for a vote on Cut, Cap and Balance as soon as possible.  The Hill reported yesterday. “Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that Senate Republicans are hoping for a vote on the balanced-budget amendment this week. ‘As you know, the issue on the floor next, after the Military Construction bill, will be the “cut, cap and balance” proposal that we anticipate will pass the House tonight,’ McConnell said. ‘The majority leader has indicated we will move to that next.’”

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), one of the authors of the Cut, Cap, and Balance bill in the Senate, said in an interview last night, “The fact is, I want us to reach a deal before we get [to the debt limit deadline]. And Sean, that’s why I’m excited about the vote tonight in the House. They are going to pass a bill that puts us on a path to a balanced budget. The president would get the debt limit increase he wants. And all we’re asking for him is join us on putting our federal budget on the path to balance. Don’t have to get there overnight. But how controversial, how crazy an idea is it to balance the budget?”

He also echoed the frustration many Republicans have had with the way the Obama White House has approached debt limit negotiations and a balanced budget amendment: “But let’s face it. There’s never been any evidence that they have any interest in really cutting spending and shrinking government. This administration has been all about the opposite. So, we need the American people to say, Mr. President, we’re really insisting now. You know, the last time we had a Democratic president, he agreed that we ought to balance the budget and working with the Republican Congress, they actually did it. So why is it so unreasonable now?”

Leader McConnell responded yesterday, “Republicans have tried to persuade the President of the need for a course correction, but weeks of negotiations have shown that his commitment to big government is simply too great to lead to the kind of long-term reforms we need to put us on a path to balance and economic growth. So we’ve decided to bring our case to the American people. And that’s why this week, Republicans in the House and the Senate will push for legislation that would cut government spending now, cap it in the future, and which only raises the debt limit if it’s accompanied by a constitutional amendment to balance the federal budget. The Cut, Cap, and Balance plan is the kind of strong medicine Washington needs and the American people want — and Republicans in both houses of Congress will be pushing it aggressively this week.

“I heard one of my Democratic colleagues say yesterday that the votes simply don’t exist to pass any bill in the Senate that balances the budget. My question is, why in the world not? If you can’t vote for a bill that says you’ll live within your means, then you’ve given up and you agree that the unsustainable path is the only one we have. And that’s completely unacceptable.”

It is time for people to know who is and who is not for saving the United States from destruction and the continued overreach and expansion of Big Government.  As just one example, the people of Arkansas now know the truth that Rep. Mike Ross was NOT willing to support action to limit government growth and to pull America back from the brink of the financial abyss.  He not only failed to follow his own rhetoric which he uses back in Arkansas, he skipped past the lap dog  stage and even went against the leadership of the Blue Dog coalition. Ross voted with Nancy Pelosi against the Cut, Cap and Balance bill.

The American people are willing to look at the issues of entitlements, but first, they need to see the Government curtained in its gluttony. And, since the Federal Government has proven itself incapable of limiting itself, it needs to be bound by the representatives of the people with "Cut, Cap and a Balanced Budget Amendment."

Proud to Be a Republican Woman

Katherine Beard, Townhall: Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s recent accusation reeked of feminism when she announced that Republicans were “anti-women.” This claim was also absurd and completely false.

In fact, her statement is almost laughable in face of the fact that the Republicans have at least one, and possibly two, female presidential candidates.

But while Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann continuously correct lame-stream media myths, they rarely have time step off the defensive field and explain what Republican women are all about.

But the truth of the matter is that the Republican Party promotes the ideals that women across the country deal with every day. Republicans stand for family values and economic responsibility. They believe in small business and in job creation. Ultimately, Republicans foster a prosperous America, so that the children of today will have a brighter future tomorrow.

Watch as Republican House representatives explain why ladies can and should be proud to be a Republican woman, too.

“The Republican agenda is indeed pro women.”

Sanity: Seven Reasons Why August 2 Isn’t the End of the World

STOP THE SPENDING
by Dean Clancy, FreedomWorks’ Legislative Counsel and Vice President, Health Care Policy: Washington is currently borrowing about 43 cents out of every dollar it spends, and is close to maxing out its credit limit.

Current law says Uncle Sam cannot borrow more than $14.3 trillion. A few months back, the Obama Administration demanded that Congress increase the national credit line by $2.5 trillion by May 16, or else, it warned, the United States would default on its debts, causing an “economic Armageddon.” ($2.5 trillion is just enough to aver the need for another debt hike until after the 2012 election.)

When May 16 came and went, and nothing happened, the Obama team set a new “Armageddon” date: August 2.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks in Washington and Wall Street – including some who should know better — seem to be taking this new deadline at face value. While it’s true that, at some point, the government will hit the ceiling and have to reduce spending by about 40 percent, exactly when that day will arrive, nobody knows for sure. And don’t believe anyone who tells you he does know. “No man knows the day or the hour.”

Maxed Out Day could be August 2. It could be August 22. Or it could be in September. The exact date really depends on whether the President is willing to tap certain reserves available to him, or decides to force a political crisis.

I cannot tell you when Maxed Out Day will be. But I can – and will — prove to you that August 2 doesn’t have to be it. Before I do so, here are three key numbers to remember:

1) We are projected to take in between $170 billion and $200 billion in August, in revenues.

2) We will likely spend about $300 billion in August.

3) Therefore, we face a gap of somewhere between $100 billion and $130 billion.

So what will happen, come the August 2 deadline?
  1. The U.S. will still be able to pay its creditors (i.e., it won’t default). There’s no reason why the government needs to stop paying its creditors. Ever. Debt service payments (interest on the national debt) will only cost $30 billion in August. As I’ve noted, we will take in $170-200 billion.
  2. Social Security checks will still go out. On July 12, President Obama suggested that, come August 2, he might not be able to send out the 50 million Social Security checks slated to go out in August. But since those checks only cost $50 billion, compared to $170-200 billion coming in, there will obviously be sufficient funds to mail them.
  3. Medicare and Medicaid payments will go out as usual. Experts predict we’ll owe about $50 billion to doctors and hospitals. Well, with $170-200 billion coming in, granny will get her health care, just like always.
  4. Veterans and active-duty military personnel will get paid. Paying our veterans will cost about $3 billion. Ditto our soldiers in uniform. That $6 billion is chump change by DC standards.
So that’s a total bill of $136 billion, easily covered by the $170-200 billion we’ll take in. Of course, we won’t be able to afford everything the government currently spends on. The Departments of HUD, Transportation, Commerce, Energy, and Education, for example, may have to take a pause while Congress works out a deal with the President. But is that really “the end of the world”?

Earlier, I mentioned the reserve funds the President can tap. As the Senate Finance Committee Republican staff helpfully point out:

5. The Treasury Department has $5 billion sitting idle in an account at the Federal Reserve. It can tap this account any time.

6. Treasury has close to $100 billion in mortgage-backed securities it can sell. It bought these securities during the financial crisis to bail out housing markets. Just last month, it sold $10.6 billion worth.

Finally, there’s a seventh reason why August 2 needn’t be anything more than another pleasant summer day in America.

7. Congress can pass the Cut Cap Balance Act (H.R.2560). This bill would give President Obama his $2.5 trillion debt increase — in exchange for three things: 1) $111 billion in cuts this coming year, 2) tight spending caps for the coming decade, and 3) congressional approval of a strong Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. By strong, I mean one that makes it much harder for Congress to spend more than a fixed share of the economy, raise taxes, or add to the debt.

The Cut Cap Balance Act – which the House is slated to vote on today — would make this the last debt ceiling hike, ever. Unfortunately, President Obama has threatened to veto it. If he does, whose fault will it be when Maxed Out Day really does arrive?

Today, House Votes On Cut, Cap And Balance Bill

Update 7:10 p.m.: House passes the Cut, Cap, and Balance bill 234-190. It now goes to the Senate where it expected to be shelved or defeated. Today a "Gang of Six - Now maybe Seven" in the Senate is trying to broker a separate non definitive agreement to cut $3.7 trillion over 10 years via more taxes and not cutting spending. Once again, a few Senators are taking away the voices of the other elected members of Congress sent to Washington, D.C. by their constituents.

Obama has already signaled he may support "THE GANG" verses reducing  spending -- which he opposes Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, applauded passage of Cut, Cap, and Balance legislation by the House of Representatives.

Today in Washington, D.C. - July 19, 2011:
Today, The US House will vote on Cut, Cap, and Balance. Their goal is to puts the U.S. on a fiscally sustainable path.

The Senate resumed consideration of H.R. 2055, the Military Construction-Veterans Affairs (Milcon-VA) appropriations bill. Votes on amendments are possible today. Yesterday, the Senate voted 80-13 to confirm J. Paul Oetken to be a District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

The Hill writes today, “Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday urged Democrats to get onboard with the GOP's ‘Cut, Cap and Balance’ act. ‘Cut, cap, and balance is the kind of tough legislation Washington needs and that Americans want, and Republicans will spend the week trying to convince Democrats to join us in supporting it,’ said McConnell. . . . McConnell said many Senate Democrats ought to be able to support the part of the bill that would require the federal government to balance its budget through a constitutional amendment. ‘At least 23 of them have either said or suggested they support the idea or told their constituents that they’ll “lead” on the issue,’ said McConnell. ‘I urge my colleagues in the strongest possible terms to join us.’”

In fact, Democrat senators have indicated in the past that they support spending cuts, capping spending, and a balanced budget amendment. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) said earlier this year, “Over the years, I have supported a balanced budget amendment, spending caps, and spending cuts.” Budget Committee Chairman Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) admitted two months ago, “We have a spending problem . . . .” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said, “Cutting is essential, and the public wants us to cut . . . .” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said early this year, “ . . . I have supported caps in the past. That's got to be part of this.” And last year, 15 Senate Democrats actually voted “to establish 3 year discretionary spending caps.”

Meanwhile, around 20 Senate Democrats have expressed their support for a balanced budget amendment in the past. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) said in 2006, “I stood up to a President of my own party . . .  In support of the balanced budget amendment, in restoring fiscal sanity to our government.” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said earlier this year, “[T]he balanced budget amendment's very, very important to me and to every governor, to every state, to every household, especially in West Virginia. And if they can do it, they think we can do it also.” In March, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) said, “I voted yes and support a balanced budget amendment that allows for flexibility in times of war and for natural disasters.” And the last time Congress seriously considered a balanced budget amendment, even Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), now the Majority Leader, said, “. . . I believe we should have a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. I am willing to go for that.” And Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), now the Majority Whip, said that “we need to move toward a Balanced Budget Amendment.”

As Leader McConnell said on the Senate floor today, “Every single Republican in the Senate supports a Balanced Budget Amendment. All we need is 20 Democrats to join us in supporting this common sense legislation. . . . We think they should have an opportunity to follow through on their statements with a vote. So I’ll repeat what I said yesterday to my Democratic friends: if I were you, I would take a long look at the Cut, Cap, and Balance legislation the House is taking up today and ask yourself a question. Ask yourself: are you so committed to the status quo that you’d vote no on a bill to balance the federal budget?”

Republicans Make The Case To Cut, Cap, And Balance, While Obama Threatens A Veto

Today in Washington, D.C. - July 18, 2011:
The Senate reconvened at 2 PM and at 3:30 PM  will resume consideration of H.R. 2055, the Military Construction-Veterans Affairs (Milcon-VA) appropriations bill, one of the annual appropriations bills that are considered by Congress. At 5:30, the Senate will vote on the nomination of J. Paul Oetken to be a District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

The AP reports today, “The next step in the weeks-long saga over how to increase the government's borrowing cap is to let House tea party forces try it their way. A Republican ‘cut, cap and balance’ plan set for a House vote Tuesday would condition a $2.4 trillion increase in the so-called debt limit on an immediate $100 billion-plus cut from next year's budget and adoption by Congress of a constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget. ‘Let's let the American people decide,’ said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on ‘Fox News Sunday.’ ‘Do they want something common sense as cutting spending, capping the growth in government and requiring a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution?’”

And National Review Online’s Andrew Stiles wrote Friday, “What started out as the brainchild of freshmen and tea-party members — strongly supported by the likes of Club for Growth and Heritage Action — ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’ has quickly become a mainstream GOP position. Conservative senators including Jim DeMint (R., S.C.), Mike Lee (R., Utah), and Rand Paul (R., Ky.) introduced ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’ legislation last week. On Thursday, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) and GOP conference chair Lamar Alexander (R., Tenn.) both signed on to the bill, a clear indication of the momentum building behind the proposal.”

As Sen. McConnell has reiterated for weeks, “What Republicans want is simple: We want to cut spending now, we want to cap runaway spending in the future and we want to save our entitlements and our country from bankruptcy by requiring the nation to balance its budget. We want to finally get our economy growing again at a pace that will lead to significant job growth.”

In making the case for a cut, cap, and balance plan, Senate Republicans have been arguing the need for a balanced budget amendment, which all 47 GOP senators are cosponsoring. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) explained the need for a balanced budget amendment to Townhall.com, where Elisabeth Meinecke writes, “Though the Senate GOP introduced a one earlier this year, President Obama has stated emphatically otherwise, telling Americans last week during a press conference that the country does not need a balanced budget amendment. ‘Yes, we do,’ Lee told Townhall when asked to respond to the president, adding later when talking about simultaneously raising the debt ceiling and cutting spending, ‘We can’t bind what a future Congress will do. We can pass laws that will affect this year, but there will be a new Congress that takes power in January of 2013, and then another new one that will take power in January 2015. And they will make their own spending decisions then -- we can’t bind them unless we amend the Constitution to do so.’ Lee points out that the American people support the idea of a balanced budget – 65 percent, according to a Sachs/Mason Dixon poll from this year . . . .”

And yet President Obama is still not getting the message. After the president said on Friday that “we don’t need a constitutional amendment” to balance the budget, the White House today announced on a conference call with communications director Dan Pfeiffer and top economic adviser Gene Sperling that Obama would veto the GOP cut, cap, and balance plan.

As Sen. Orrin Hatch, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said in the Weekly Republican Address Saturday, “The only reason this Administration doesn’t want a constitutional amendment is because they want to keep spending the American people’s money. And the only reason congressional Democrats would refuse to pass it, is because they know the people of this country would rise up and quickly ratify it. A balanced budget amendment makes sense; its time has more than come. Now, Congress must act.”

After the Administration announced that the President would veto H.R. 2560, the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act of 2011. which the House is expected to vote on this legislation tomorrow, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said: "It’s disappointing the White House would reject this common-sense plan to rein in the debt and deficits that are hurting job creation in America. While American families have to set priorities and balance their books, this White House obviously isn’t serious about making the same tough choices. While the House is once again acting responsibly, the Administration still won’t say what cuts it’s willing to make to end Washington’s spending binge and the economic uncertainty it’s creating. This unfortunate veto threat should make clear that the issue is not congressional inaction, but rather the President’s unwillingness to cut spending and restrain the future growth of our government. If we are going to raise the debt limit and avoid default, the White House must be willing to demonstrate more courage than we have seen to date. The House will proceed as planned with its vote on the Cut, Cap and Balance Act.”

To quote Reince Priebus, RNC Chairman, "Make no mistake -- it is too much spending that has gotten us where we are, not too little revenue. Barack Obama has burned through $3.7 trillion of taxpayers' money, bringing the debt to an astonishing $14.3 trillion -- $46,000 for every man, woman, and child in America. The Obama Democrats' irresponsible call for massive tax increases on the already overburdened American people is a non-starter. It's time for serious reform. It's time for a Balanced Budget Amendment."

It amazes me that President Obama would threaten a veto this bill. His arrogance exceeds all expectations.

Each American’s Share of National Debt is Growing

by Abigail White, Heritage Foundation Foundry Scribe:

Throughout the debate over the debt limit these past few weeks, Americans have become increasingly alarmed with our nation’s staggering $14.3 trillion debt. Many might wonder how the government is ever going to repay its mounting debt.
Unfortunately, that responsibility will fall to the Debt-Paying Generation (ages 5-30). Currently, every citizen owns $31,871 of the national debt, but each American’s share of national debt is growing. If current spending patterns continue, by the time 5-year-olds are 45, they will each be responsible for $279,738 of the debt.

Bill Beach, director of Heritage’s Center for Data Analysis, warns that the 115 million Americans in the Debt-Paying Generation could end their lives as the least improved generation. Without a doubt, the mounting debt will reshape the lives of future generations.
