Real Patriots Cut Taxes

Morning Bell, The Heritage Foundation: According to the Tax Policy Center, Barack Obama plans raise the tax burden on all Americans by $627.1 billion over the next 10 years. Defending this policy on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Joe Biden told Americans they should enjoy paying higher taxes because “it’s time to be patriotic … time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.” Apparently, the rest of the world does not view higher taxes as “patriotic” as Biden does.

Over the last decade almost every member of the European Union has cut its corporate tax rate. . . . High corporate tax rates are undermining U.S. international competitiveness. In today’s global economy, high rates deter companies from taking advantage of new market opportunities in countries they otherwise would be eager to compete in. . . . [Read More] [Image source]

Alert: Pelosi 'Drill Nowhere, Drill Never' Scam Headed for Senate Vote

Jeff Mazzella, Center for Individual Freedom: More political games designed to dupe the American people! Increased prices at the pump! More dependence on oil from Iran, Venezuela and other foreign countries that HATE America! That basically sums up Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her liberal cohorts' plan to address our nation's energy crisis. Indeed, leave it to the Pelosi Politburo to pass a bill, literally in the dark of night, that EFFECTIVELY PROHIBITS domestic drilling and then try to sell the legislation to the American people as a measure that opens up domestic drilling!

In case you missed it, here's the play by play on Pelosi's energy "hoax": On Monday evening at 9:45 PM, Pelosi dropped a 245-page bill on Congress (H.R. 6899, the so-called "Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act."). Then, using arcane procedural maneuvers, she effectively stifled substantive debate, by-passed the committee process, prohibited amendments and forced a vote within 24 hours! And on Tuesday evening, the House of Representatives passed this "sham bill" on a mostly partisan vote of 239-189!

And Pelosi's bill is NOTHING BUT SMOKE AND MIRRORS. It will ACTUALLY PROHIBIT DOMESTIC DRILLING, RAISE YOUR TAXES, and has a 'mother-load' of Congressional pork!
  • Republican House Minority Leader, John Boehner, had this to say: "It would permanently lock up 80 percent of our nation's offshore energy resources -- holding hostage billions of barrels of American oil."

  • Congressman Jeb Hensarling called it "a hoax bill that would permanently prevent exploration of nearly 90 percent of the Outer Continental Shelf for American energy and block energy production in arctic Alaska and the Inter-Mountain West."

  • House Minority Whip Roy Blunt said; "I'm offended.... And the American people should be offended that we're not doing the job for them that really matters."

  • The liberal media is already giving Pelosi political cover and repeating the lie. Within minutes of the passage of this "sham legislation":
  • Reuters wrote: "The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday that lifts a longstanding ban on offshore oil drilling, opening most of the U.S. coastline to exploration."

  • The New York Times wrote: "The House on Tuesday night approved a measure that would ease a longstanding ban on offshore oil drilling..."

  • CNN: "The House of Representatives on Tuesday night passed an energy bill clearing the way for more oil drilling off U.S. coasts..."

  • But the sad truth is that this legislation DOES NOT lift the ban on offshore drilling; it actually effectively puts MORE RESTRICTIONS on offshore drilling! Right now, this "Pelosi sham bill" is on the fast-track to the Senate and the only thing that may stand in its way -- and the passage of REAL energy legislation that will actually open up domestic drilling -- is YOU and millions of other concerned Americans! If we don't take action right now, the mantra of "drill here and drill now" may be replaced by a policy of "drill nowhere, drill never and raise taxes on the American people." Contact Your Senators!

Lake County Illinois Says Enough to Crimes by Illegal Aliens

Jake at Freedom Folks reports that Lake County Sheriff has announced their desire to pursue a 287(g) agreement with the federal government. This will allow Lake County Sheriff’s Police to act as ICE agents when dealing with illegal alien criminals. While deciding whether or not to pursue this agreement, the Sheriff performed an audit of the jail to see just how many illegal aliens they were holding and what crimes they'd committed; results:
    DUI — 25
    Aggravated DUI — 24
    Sex offenses — 22
    Drug offenses — 18
    Murder — 7
    Burglary — 7
    Gun offenses — 4
    Theft — 3
    Home invasion — 3
    Robbery — 2
    Other offenses — 7
Now these numbers may not seem terribly high but its important to remember that Lake County is a semi-rural area with pretty low crime rates. In fact, according to the Sheriff without illegal aliens the murder rate wold have been cut in half -- illegal aliens accounted for half of all murders in Lake County Illinois.

A complaint by open borders supporters is that set is that Mexicans and Hispanics are being picked on or somehow discriminated against when immigration law is actually enforced. Below are the facts on the origins of foreign born criminals in the Lake County Jail:
    Mexico — 105
    Poland — 5
    Puerto Rico — 4
    El Salvador –3
    Canada — 2
    Honduras — 2
    Philippines — 1
    Columbia — 1
    Vietnam — 1
    Pakistan — 1
    Guatemala — 1
    Cuba — 1
    Russia — 1
    Germany — 1
    Barbados — 1
Seven (7) inmates were unwilling or unable to provide information about their country of origin. The result show that In Lake County, IL, illegals from Mexico account for the magnitude of illegal aliens criminals in their jail.

The Sheriff in pursing participation in the 287(g) program, noted the salutary effect on crime in Prince William County, Va after implementing the 287(g) protocol: 19.3% drop in crimes against persons, 43.8% drop in homicides, 22.5% drop in robberies, 18.2% drop in aggravated assaults, and the deportation of over a 1000 criminal aliens. He also noted that neighboring Fairfax County, VA who did not participate in 287(g) program experienced the inverse in their crime rate rising equivalent to the decrease in Prince William county. . . . Report: Obama attempted to delay Iraq withdrawal

WorldNetDaily: While touring Iraq in July and publicly calling for troop withdrawal, Sen. Barack Obama was reportedly trying in private to delay plans for an American draw-down until after the next president took office. New York Post columnist Amir Taheri writes that he interviewed Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, who confirmed the Democratic presidential candidate met with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad to demand delay in the withdrawal of American forces. "He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the U.S. elections and the formation of a new administration," Zebari reportedly said.

The column states that Obama insisted it was in Iraq's best interest to avoid an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion." Such a position in private negotiations would be a stark contrast with Obama's public record on the issue. "The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq's leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops," Obama said last year at a university in Iowa. "Not in six months or one year – now." [Full Story]

    Sarah Palin - Tough Cookie

Mona Charen, National Review:— The vice-presidential debates are still two and a half weeks off, yet Governor Sarah Palin has already demonstrated a toughness under pressure that bodes well for her performance that night and throughout the remainder of the campaign . . . The pressure on Sarah Palin to perform well in her interview with Charlie Gibson was monumental. The country was almost literally panting to see it. And Gibson, as we have all noticed, felt obliged to play the role of inquisitor and prosecutor far more than interlocutor. One’s first primetime network interview would be terrifying under the best of circumstances. In this case, when she presented herself for questioning, the mainstream media had been in full bay for two weeks. Under these conditions, it’s a triumph that she didn’t tremble and stumble all the way through. As it is, she did fine. . . . Sarah Palin is not perfect — she’s just the most exciting, authentic, fresh, and talented politician to debut in a generation. . . . [Palin in the pressure cooker] See also:

    E-Gate?

Gary Bauer, Campaign for Working Families: The shocking news that hackers broke into the E-mail account of Governor Sarah Palin is yet another disturbing example of the level of hostility men and women of faith are facing in the political arena. It could be the random act of one individual. But Barack Obama is certainly the most famous political celebrity to burst onto the scene in decades, yet his E-mail account has not been hacked. The FBI and the Secret Service are investigating. Whoever is responsible should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But it seems very likely to me that this outrageous invasion of privacy was a political dirty trick, especially given how unhinged the radical Left has become since Palin's selection as the GOP vice presidential nominee. Sarah Palin and her family have had to endure unbelievable ridicule and scorn from the Left and the liberal media. Sadly, it isn't likely to end anytime soon.

Consider this: Nicholas Provenzo, a libertarian columnist who writes for a group that claims to be "dedicated to advancing individual rights," condemned Sarah Palin in a blog posting this week for exercising her individual right to give birth to her son, Trig, who has Down syndrome. Provenzo labels the decision to have a child, any child, "a profoundly selfish choice." This echoes the twisted reasoning of some radicals who refuse to have children because kids are burdens on resources and the environment. These confused ideologues seem to think that the human race is a disease infecting Mother Earth. Provenzo contends that by bringing a child with special needs into the world, the Palins are essentially stranding the cost of their child’s life upon others. Well, you could make the same argument about public schools, and maybe this individual would. But here we have crossed the line from abortion being a "choice" to it being a requirement determined by the demands of society at large.

What kind of society would make such demands? Communist China with its "one child" policy or Nazi Germany with its eugenics program, which valued only blue-eyed, blond-haired Aryans and decided that Jews should be exterminated. The author concludes his column by agreeing with the view of another radical leftist who described the decision of Sarah Palin and many other families to welcome their children into the world as the worship of retardation.” How progressively tolerant.

Meanwhile, in Nevada yesterday, Obama issued these orders to his followers: "I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face." Once again, we are seeing the totalitarian impulse of the Left. The Obama campaign tries to silence its critics by harassing radio stations that dare to host conservatives, and now he is telling his followers to get in your face.

Can you imagine the media's outrage if James Dobson urged his supporters to "get in the face?" of liberals? He would be accused of inciting hatred and violence. Liberals have passed "buffer zone" laws to "protect" abortion centers from peaceful pro-life protestors. Can we get "buffer zones" to protect us from rabid Obama supporters who "get in our face"? No. Instead the Left wants to pass the Fairness Doctrine to shut down conservative and Christian talk radio in order to "protect" us from James Dobson, Rush Limbaugh and Chuck Colson. . . .

But, ultimately, you will decide who wins this election by voting in 47 days. Let me urge you to make sure that you and all your like-minded friends and family members are registered to vote. The deadline to register in most states is October 6th. Please make every effort to get your friends and family members registered. . . . I won't ask you to get into anyone's face, but I will ask you to get into the voting booth on November 4th!

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is once again coming to America to address the United Nations. The man should be arrested and put on trial for the Iranian regime's support of terrorism. Let me remind you once again about who he is and what he promotes. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly denied the Holocaust. He has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map." He has called Israel, our most reliable ally in the Middle East, a "stinking corpse." His regime is the world’s leading sponsor of Islamic terrorism, backing Hezbollah in its war against Israel and radical Shiite groups that are murdering civilians and American soldiers in Iraq. He is also aggressively pursuing nuclear technology in defiance of U.N. inspections. If Americans should be united on anything, it ought to be the need to expose Ahmadinejad as the evil thug he really is.

But, sadly, politics is once again trumping the national interest, and New York Senator Hillary Clinton has really let America down. Hillary was scheduled to speak at an event protesting Ahmadinejad’s visit next week. But yesterday Sen. Clinton's staff shocked the organizers of the event when they cancelled and backed out after it was reported that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin had also been invited. How incredibly petty!

Once again, we are seeing that grand tradition of American consensus on foreign policy, that partisanship ends at the waters edge, being subverted by bitter partisanship. It shouldn't be too much to ask, for the sake of all those who love Israel and freedom, for politicians on both sides of the aisle to put their differences aside for a day, just as we did after 9/11, to unite against the same evil ideology that attacked us on that dark day and which dares to step foot on our soil now. But for Hillary and many on the radical Left, hatred of Sarah Palin outweighs any other consideration. My friends, we can't afford to have such petty partisans in the White House. Let's put country first by putting John McCain and Sarah Palin in the White House!

    Today in Washington D. C. - July 19, 2008

The House and Senate are not in session. On Monday ( Sept 22), the House will return at 10:30 a.m and the Senate will reconvene at 3:00 p.m. Last night, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, and SEC Chairman Chris Cox met with congressional leaders to discuss potential legislation to address the current financial crisis. Members of Congress will be considering the proposals through the weekend and will likely begin working on legislation next week.

On Tuesday, the Senate will begin consideration of H.R. 6049, the vehicle for the tax extenders compromise. Three amendments will be offered: a substitute amendment from Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus (D-MT) and Ranking Member Chuck Grassley (R-IA) containing energy tax credits, a Reid amendment with an alternative minimum tax (AMT) fix paid for with tax increases, and a Baucus-Grassley amendment with an AMT fix not including tax increases. All three amendments will need 60 votes to be adopted.

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-ND) will be allowed a point of order against the Baucus-Grassley amendment, which can be waived with 60 votes. After amendments have been considered and voted on, the Senate will vote on final passage of the bill.

From Senate & News Sources: Several Senate aides report that the (Gang of 20) bipartisan group of senators who sought a compromise in the rancorous energy debate won't introduce their bill before lawmakers adjourn for the elections. Leading Edge News reports,
"Since the group won't offer a bill, it's unclear how the energy debate will unfold days before the scheduled Sept. 26 adjournment. Since consideration of the bill was expected to play a significant role in the debate, some senior aides expected Democrats would scrap next week's energy debate, in light of the packed scheduled before the recess and the heightened focus on the economic downturn. But no decisions have been announced, according to a Democratic leadership aide.

Democrats, under pressure to lift a nearly three-decade-old ban on drilling, seemed open to the plan to deflect criticism that they were standing in the way of finding more domestic supplies. But many Republicans criticized the plan, raising concerns that by offering a compromise to Democrats and their presidential candidate Barack Obama, it would blunt a potent election-year attack that has gained traction at the polls. GOP presidential candidate John McCain opposed the plan, and Democrats were preparing to attack the Arizona senator for standing in the way of a bipartisan compromise. . . . Lawmakers have run into roadblocks as the election-year dynamics have shifted. For instance, in a dramatic reversal, the House passed a Democratic energy bill this week that allowed coastal states to drill more than 50 miles off their shores. Plus Democrats are signaling that they will not try to renew the offshore drilling ban after it expires on Oct. 1."

Take Away Planned Parenthood’s Government Funding, Tax-Exempt Status

Jeff Poor, Business & Media Institute: Minnesota Republican Michele Bachman says the nation’s largest abortion provider, with revenues of $1 billion, needs no help from the taxpayers. It's time to stop government funding and tax breaks for "Big Abortion." That's the message from U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R.-Minn. . . . Bachman detailed how Planned Parenthood – a controversial non-profit “family planning” organization that reportedly performed 289,750 abortions in 2006 – has expanded significantly. She cited a June 23 Wall Street Journal article by Stephanie Simon that revealed 501(c)3 organization had a record $1 billion in annual revenue in a recent financial report. . . .

Bachman noted the absurdity of an organization bringing in record revenues and boasting a budget surplus of $115 million needing any help from the government in the form of tax breaks and government grants. . . . They are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, which means they pay no taxes . . . and they receive over $300 million per year in grants from the federal government. . . . House Passes Bill To Repeal D.C. Gun Ban

GOA: The U.S. House of Representatives passed Representative Childers' D.C. gun ban repeal verses the anti-gun bill sponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton -- which would have allowed D.C. to continue enacting gun control.

The bill now goes to the Senate, but unless there is a ton of pressure put on Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), the bill will languish in committee. Thankfully, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) is spearheading an effort to get a vote on the House-passed bill. She is asking her fellow Senators to cosponsor a letter which she will then deliver to Sen. Reid.

The Hutchison letter points out that, "In DC v. Heller, the court affirmed that the District of Columbia's ban on ownership of handguns was an unconstitutional restriction on that right." After noting that D.C. has continued to deprive its residents of their Second Amendment rights for more than 30 years, the letter asks Sen. Reid "to ensure that D.C. residents do not have to wait any longer to realize their constitutional rights by allowing the full Senate to consider H.R. 6842 before the 110th Congress concludes."

(Norton's bill was the original HR 6842, but it now contains the Childers pro-gun language instead -- thanks in no small part to your efforts.)

There are not many days left before Congress recesses for the remainder of the year, and Sen. Reid is expected to try to run out the clock on the D.C. repeal bill. That's why it's important to act quickly and contact your own two U.S. Senators. This is the last chance we have this year to put some teeth into the Supreme Court's decision in Heller. Gun Owners of America will score the signing of this letter in its upcoming congressional rating.

ACTION: Please contact your two Senators and ask them to cosign the Hutchison letter to Senator Reid. Contact Your Senators!

    Today in Washington D. C. - July 18, 2008

On The Floor: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has indicated the Senate has a lot to do in the next week, including passing a tax extenders bill, voting on several energy proposals, potentially considering a second stimulus package sent from the House, and passing a continuing resolution to fund the government. Yet Reid is apparently looking to return to an omnibus bill (S. 3297) he put together back in July consisting of measures Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) has objected to, mostly over spending concerns.

Yesterday, the Senate passed the fiscal 2009 Defense authorization bill (S. 3001). Last night, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed cloture on the motion to proceed to his omnibus bill and on the motion to proceed to a shell (H.R. 6049) for the Senate’s tax extenders compromise. If no agreement is reached between Reid and Coburn, a vote on cloture on the motion to proceed to the omnibus bill is likely Friday.

The House yesterday passed Representative Childers' D.C. gun ban repeal verses the anti-gun bill sponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton -- which would have allowed D.C. to continue enacting gun control. But The Washington Post reports that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) is vowing to block the legislation from moving in the Senate. A seperate Gun Owners of America call to action follows this post.

From Senate & News Sources: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said today that “Americans are reading stories about our economy and they are looking for answers. They are looking for leadership.” It’s unfortunate that the Democrat leadership in Congress hasn’t shown much.

After starting yesterday comparing President Bush and Sen. John McCain to “the ghost of Herbert Hoover,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid spent time in the afternoon castigating Bush for his handling of the economy and blaming his administration for the current financial crisis. However, even casual reviews of the facts are already reveiling that Democrats were behind the policies and were the primary financial beneficiaries of the banking, lending, and investment practices that are presently assaulting our economy. While Reid points a finger, in realty, four fingers are pointing back at both he and his cronies.

ABC News reports that when Reid was asked yesterday about what Congress could do in this situation and Reid replied, “No one knows what to do. We are in new territory here. This is a different game.” Indeed, Bloomberg reports that “[t]he Democratic-controlled Congress, acknowledging that it isn’t equipped to lead the way to a solution for the financial crisis and can’t agree on a path to follow, is likely to just get out of the way” and adjourn until after the elections. So apparently Reid knows what the president should have done, but not Congress.

Democrats in the Senate have spent a lot of time complaining about a lack of leadership from Republicans when they hold up questionable legislation they claim is bipartisan. Yet this week we find Democrat senators blocking important legislation with bipartisan support. Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed a bill to bring Washington, D.C.’s gun laws into compliance with this year’s Supreme Court ruling that they were unconstitutionally restrictive. The Heritage Foundation’s James Jay Carafano notes that E-Verify, “a system that allows employers to verify electronically whether their newly hired employees are legally authorized to work in the United States” expires at the end of November unless Congress reauthorizes it. But the bill to reauthorize the program, which passed with over 400 votes in the House, is stuck in the Senate, because of demands by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) that could derail the bill.

Democrats took over Congress in 2007 boasting of their judgment on Iraq and proceeded to criticize and attempt to hobble the troop surge. They repeatedly cited surveys showing the public disapproved of how the war was being handled and disagreed with the decision to boost troop levels to allow for a revamped counterinsurgency strategy. Today, there is a very interesting New York Times/CBS News poll showing for the first time that a majority of respondents said the surge “is making the situation in Iraq better.” Not only that, for the first time since February 2005, a majority also said that U.S. efforts “to bring stability and order to Iraq” were going very well or somewhat well. This is only the second time that a majority responded this way since the first year of the war. But if Democrats had their way, it’s unlikely we’d have seen such progress towards stability in Iraq. Americans are looking for leadership, but they might want to consider Democrats’ track record if they’re looking towards Congress.

    An American Carol

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: I joined others invited to a special pre-release showing of David Zucker’s new political comedy "An American Carol" and to meet the cast. The event was by invitation only during the week of the Republican National Convention 2008.

An American Carol is a comedy that reformats the tale: A Christmas Carol. Instead of Ebenezer Scrooge, we have a cynical, anti-American documentary filmmaker named Michael Malone (obviously representing Michael Moore), who sets out on a crusade to abolish the July Fourth holiday with his film Die You American Pigs. On the fourth of July, he is visited by three ghosts who show him the meaning of Independence, instead of Christmas. Chris Farley’s brother Kevin Farley stars as the filmmaker, alongside Kelsey Grammer as General Patton, Jon Voight as General Washington, Leslie Nielsen as himself, Bill O’ Reilly as himself, Dennis Hopper, and James Woods.

The film is rated and Children under 13 should not view this film without their parent's prior viewing. Funny - yes. Child safe - no! Obviously any thing remotely addressing Michael Moore is not going to be "child safe." the film is now being promoted by Vivendi Entertainment who will release the film on October 3, 2008. All good conservatives, freedom loving patriotic Americans, and anyone who despises Michale Moore questionable documentaries need to see this film! Rating -- "Funny" and PG13.

CNN Covers for Obama & Kid's Sex Education

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Liberal CNN again showed their true colors by trying to cover for Barack Obama on the real content of a "comprehensive sex education for kindergartners." Did you grasp those words -- a bill addressing kindergartners an sex? Not only about sex but about "the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including the prevention, transmission and spread of HIV." Read the words out loud! The end result of this bill is forcing "K" trough 3rd grade children to absorb more fears and responsibility. These are young innocent developing minds. I just checked my copy of the US Constitution and it doesn't give the U.S Congress this authority. What kind of perverted society they trying to legislate? Congress has no business being in the sex-education business in the first place . Nor should they be forcing their will on the States via grants and pittance funding.

Kathy Morrison at Purple People Vote reports:
In last nights CNN broadcast Cambell Brown, Jeffery Toobin, and others called the McCain campaign's ad about Senator Obama's support for a bill for 'comprehensive sex education for kindergarteners' a lie. One problem, they're wrong. The text of the bill states,
"Each class or course in comprehensive sex education in any of grades K through 12 shall include instruction on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including the prevention, transmission and spread of HIV."
They repeated the Obama campaign's explanation that the bill was about 'inappropriate touching'. *

Second problem, the bill isn't about 'inappropriate touching'. Byron York of National Review researched this bill and provides and an explanation along with the text of the bill in his article On Sex-Ed Ad, McCain is Right. However, when this article was brought up during last night's CNN broadcast it was dismissed.

CNN didn't do their homework and they should apologize and retract their statement that the McCain campaign lied. Contact CNN and demand a retraction: Election Center Feedback Form and Report an error/Headline News feedback form
    * Note: There is a section of the bill that does address identifying abuse. While it is not stated directly as ‘inappropriate touching’ that is the idea of that section. However, that is not the primary directive of the bill.

Chris Matthews Trash Talks Palin & Thomas

The blatant media bias of Chris Matthews' insulting comments continues. If Matthews had said these same comments for liberal women and blacks, he would have literally been summarily dismissed by MSNBC. Geoffrey Dickens at NewsBusters: You'd think Chris Matthews would learn his lesson. First he insulted Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell as "showcase appointments," only to apologize for it later. Then, on Tuesday's "Hardball" he essentially called Sarah Palin an empty "vessel" with no "independent thinking" of her own, just "like a Clarence Thomas."

Matthews made the following gaffe during a discussion about Sarah Palin's readiness, on the September 16, "Hardball":
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me ask you Paul [Begala], because I Know your politics. But is this a, like a Clarence Thomas where they wanted to pick an African-American for the Supreme Court so they picked the kind they wanted, which was in this case, a guy who was very conservative who hued to the, sort of the, the line of the conservative court. They have a person [Sarah Palin] here, who's apparently, to some extent, in terms of foreign policy, tabula rasa. Someone they can fill up with all this neo-conservative thinking, including vocabulary, apparently based upon her performance with Charlie, Charlie Gibson. Is that what they wanted, just sort of a vessel to sell and carry their product, rather than someone with independent thinking on foreign policy?

    Today in Washington D. C. - Sept 17, 2008

On The Floor: The Senate will resume consideration of the fiscal 2009 Defense authorization bill (S. 3001). Yesterday, the Senate voted 61-32 to invoke cloture on the Defense authorization bill.

From Senate & News Sources: At a time when Americans are looking with concern at the troubles on Wall Street and other economic difficulties and people in Texas, Louisiana, and other states are recovering from costly and destructive hurricanes, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid certainly showed his priorities yesterday, not missing an opportunity for hyper-partisan rhetoric. Reid began in the morning by comparing President Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to “the ghost of Herbert Hoover.” Reid said, “No matter what George Bush, John McCain, or the ghost of Herbert Hoover may think, this economy is not strong, and the American people deserve better.”

Though Democrats are fond of trotting out Hoover to hang around Republicans’ necks every time the economy faces difficulty, it is in fact Democrats who are pushing the very policies Hoover championed that hurt the economy in the 1930s. Hoover went along with one of the most infamous tariffs in American history, the Smoot-Hawley Act, which accelerated the contraction of international trade in the 1930s. Similarly, Democrats have turned to protectionism of late, refusing to pass beneficial trade agreements with Colombia and South Korea. The obstruction on Colombia alone has cost American companies over $1 billion so far.

Another of Hoover’s mistakes was to raise taxes at a time of economic troubles. Today’s Congressional Democrats voted for a budget that would allow for the largest tax increase in American history, including “allow[ing] income tax rates to go up on individuals making as little as $31,850 and couples earning $63,700 or more,” as the AP put it.

Reid also made sure to take time to attack former Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX). Reid said, “The same Phil Gramm who, as a senator, was responsible for deregulation in the financial services industries that paved the way for much of this crisis to occur. It was Phil Gramm who pushed legislation through a Republican Senate that allowed firms like Enron to avoid regulation and destroy the life savings of its employees, and it was Phil Gramm’s legislation that now allows Wall Street traders to bid up the price of oil, leaving us to pay the bill.”

However, The Hill reports, “ . . . the 90-8 Senate vote in 1999 that sent the legislation to President Clinton’s desk included ‘aye’ votes from Reid and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden (D-DL).” Reid might want to pause next time before assailing people for sponsoring bills he voted for.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell took a different tack this morning, saying “Now more than ever is the time to rise above politics and work together. Our constituents don’t want campaign speeches and hyper-partisan accusations - they want security for their home and savings. They want energy security and lower costs for gas and oil. And they want protection from future tax hikes on their income.”

Desperate Liberal Media Step Up Attacks Against Palin

Last night Media Research Center (MRC) founder Brent Bozell appeared on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes," and lambasted Huffington Post Editor Roy Sekoff for denying blatant liberal media bias in this year's election coverage. You don't want to miss the online video of ithey s spectacular appearance of Brent at his finest.

In the last two weeks, the liberal media has continued to scrutinize GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, while Barack Obama and Joe Biden have remained unscathed. The liberal media have been in full-scale attack mode for several weeks!

  • In the Sunday edition, The New York Times penned four "hit pieces" and devoted more than 6,000 words to attack Palin, while nary an ill word was uttered against Obama!

  • More egregious was ABC's "out-of-context" editing of a recent Palin interview--a blatant, unscrupulous effort to mislead the public!

Democrat Energy Legislation is a Fraud Agqainst the American People

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: The American people, democrats, republicans and independents have overwhelmingly called for more access to America's resources and drilling now for oil. However as expressed below, the Democrat leadership in the Us House of representatives introduced a new bill in an attempt to defraud the American people again by using a nice sounding name while restricting what Americans need. The only real thing Congress needs to do is get out of the way of and allow Americans access to American resources. An analogy would be your being denied access to your own savings account to cover critical needs or to reduce your costs by being able to buy something at a savings. [Oops, hope Nancy Pelosi was not listening, she already wants to retroactively add another tax on 401K plans.]

Rep. John Boozman today expressed his opposition to H.R. 6899, the ‘Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act’ introduced by the House majority late last night and debated for the first time today. The bill appears to be another Democrat fraud on the public. Congressman Boozman said:
There are nine working days in the legislative calendar to vote on a commonsense energy plan. It’s something my constituents in Arkansas’ Third District have asked for and it’s something every American deserves. Unfortunately, the legislation has been labeled ‘energy’ when in fact it’s a no-energy bill.

The nearly 300 pages of legislation provide no solutions to expand our American energy. It permanently locks up to 80 percent of American energy on the Outer Continental Shelf, and permanently locks up more than one trillion barrels of oil from oil shale in the Inter-Mountain West and permanently locks up more than 10 billion barrels of oil on Alaska’s remote North Slope. The only thing that we need to make permanent is the ability for Americans to utilize all of their natural resources to increase energy.

We need to consider a comprehensive plan that uses an ‘all-of-the-above’ approach
to utilizing all of America’s energy sources. This plan is a ‘none-of-the above’ approach.

    Today in Washington D. C. - Sept 16, 2008

On The Floor: The Senate will resume consideration of the fiscal 2009 Defense authorization bill (S. 3001) at 3 PM. Later in the week, the Senate could be action on tax extenders or an energy package, depending on what agreements are reached on consideration.

The House is set to vote today on an energy proposal being offered by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat leadership. Unfortunately, the Democrats’ plan falls short in a number of areas.

From Senate & News Sources: USA Today described the House drilling provisions as “look[ing] timid” in an editorial last week. And a McClatchy article noted that the bill lacks provisions for revenue sharing with states. Louisiana Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu said yesterday that a bill without revenue sharing would be “dead on arrival” in the Senate. Roll Call points out that the bill also includes “a 15 percent renewable electricity mandate.”

The left leaning, New York Times urges support for Pelosi’s energy plan, lest the offshore drilling moratorium simply expire which would allow drilling in a much larger area than the Democrats’ proposal. Given the Times’ steady opposition to more offshore drilling, the editors write, “Congress has sensibly renewed the moratorium each year for the last 26.” The "Drill Here, Drill Now" efforts appears to have had a major impact when the The Times are so eager for its passage.

Clearly, the Democrats’ bill is problematic. This might explain today’s Roll Call story discussing how desperate Democrat leaders are to prevent defections to a Republican alternative that could be offered in a motion to recommit. Roll Call writes, “[Democrat leaders] will be nervously watching the scoreboard on the Republican alternative.” Indeed, “Democrats chafed at the possibility of Republicans hijacking Pelosi’s carefully whipped strategy.” The article goes on to observe that “[f]ailure to support the Speaker would be a huge embarrassment for Democrats on such a high-profile measure with the elections just a month away.”

While House Democrats work feverishly to secure the votes they need for their energy bill, Senate Democrats are looking beyond the energy debate and calling for a second economic stimulus package. Sen. Carl Levin told reporters yesterday, “The uncertainty of the future of markets confirms need for another economic stimulus package.” Politico reports, “Levin and Sen. Sherrod Brown, outlined the contours of the roughly $50 billion package Democrats will be pushing in the coming weeks, which involves a large increase in spending on infrastructure, an extension of unemployment benefits, aid to states facing rising Medicare costs and an extension of alternative energy tax credits, among other proposals.” What these proposals have to do with stimulating the economy wasn’t immediately clear.

Roll Call notes Republican skepticism of Democrats’ calls for a new stimulus, writing, “They contend that Democrats are bound to overreach and lard up the bill with what voters will think is pork-barrel spending. . . . Plus, Republicans said they believe Democrats are just setting up the stimulus bill as a political ploy in advance of the November elections.” It seems that Democrats are always quick to turn to big spending and political plays. A senior Senate aide commented, “Perhaps if Democrats spent half as much time monitoring the slowing economy as they did holding political Iraq votes in 2007, American taxpayers wouldn’t be on the hook for all their ill-prepared knee jerk reactions to this economic crisis.”

Charlie Gibson Fumbles VP Nominee Interview

Bill Smith, Editor: Five days ago, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had her first major media interview after being coming the vice presidential nominee for the Republican Party. She agreed to meet with Charlie Gibson on "ABC World News Tonight." Every since that interview, the media pundits have been weighing in with their tate-to-tate. I was one of many who were shocked that Charlie Gibson did not act with his usual demeanor of being a gentleman. It was rather disappointing, to see Gibson both demean himself and Gov. Palin by his behaviour. Gibson seemed to leave his role of investigative journalism and appeared to be competing for the roll of the former Tim Russert and his bulldog' approach. Gibson's proved that he is "no Tim Russert." While Russert was a bulldog, he did not allow his mannerisms or actions get out of hand during an interview. Gibson evidenced that he was intent on attacking (even mocking) Sarah Palin. I guess working for ABC and needing to bring home stories that support the ABC liberal agenda, is now getting to Charlie Gibson. Here are a few recent published comments on the interview:
    - ABC's bungles: Botches mar Palin interview
    - The press: mad as hell, and not going to take it anymore
    - Glenn Beck: The Sarah Palin smear-fest
    - Charles Krauthammer: It was Gibson’s gaffe
    - L.A. Times rebukes ABC for distorting Palin remarks
    - Hollywood Republicans to mobilize for Palin
    - "Values voters" eye a leader in Palin as others fade
    - Dick Morris: Prepare for Sarah Palin versus Hillary Clinton in 2012
    - Why our elites fear faith
    - Palin: U.S. shouldn’t "second guess" Israel
    - Palin's statements on climate change at odds
    - Contrary to ABC report, Palin’s global warming views have been consistent

Return of 'hate crimes' plan looms in Congress

by Bob Unruh, WorldNetDaily: A federal "hate crimes" plan to criminalize speech or thoughts critical of homosexuality -- dropped from Congress' agenda earlier because of a veto threat from President Bush -- may be resurrected before the election, according to an opponent of such advocacy laws. "Here's ultimately what we expect," Mathew Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel and dean of the Liberty University School of Law, [said] "The hate crimes plan is to be offered as an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2009 Department of Defense reauthorization bill. That's what the word is, that it's going to be offered as an amendment."

Pro-homosexual advocates long have sought such a law but opponents fear it would be used to crack down on those who maintain a biblical perspective that condemns homosexuality as sin. Observers note that it would criminalize speech and thought, since other criminal actions already are addressed with current statutes. Canada already has an aggressive "hate crimes" law, and there authorities there have gone so far as to tell a Christian pastor he must recant his faith because of the legislation that bans statements that can be "perceived" as condemning another person.

Some states already have similar statutes, too, and in New Mexico, a photography company run by two Christians was fined $6,600 by the state for declining to provide services to a lesbian couple setting up a lookalike "marriage" ceremony. Also, Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter recently signed a bill into law that opponents describe as draconian, with one analyst expressing the opinion that it actually could be read as outlawing publication of the Bible in the state because of its injunctions against homosexuality . . . Gangs of the Senate

Chad Pergram, Fox News — There is nothing that strikes more fear in the hearts of Senate leaders than legislative gangs. And they're back. Border agents lose appeal in shooting

San Antonio Express-News: Two Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a drug smuggler near El Paso and covering it up lost an appeal Thursday. The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans refused to reconsider the ruling a three-judge panel had issued in late July that affirmed most of the charges against Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.

The men shot Osvaldo Aldrete Davila of Mexico, hitting the unarmed smuggler in the buttocks after he abandoned a load of marijuana and ran across the border into Mexico. The agents said they fired because they thought he had a gun in his hand, but were sent to prison for more than a decade after a jury determined there was a cover-up. Aldrete Davila was given immunity for transporting that load, but was sentenced last month to 114 months in prison over a separate drug load. . . . [Source]

    Today in Washington D. C. - Sept 15, 2008

On The Floor: The Senate reconvene at 3 PM and resumed consideration of the fiscal 2009 Defense authorization bill (S. 3001). There will be no votes today. Later in the week, there could be action on tax extenders or an energy package, depending on what agreements are reached on consideration.

From Senate & News Sources: Roll Call out the bottom line on energy for the next couple of weeks today: “The biggest question remaining this Congress is whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) really want to cut a deal with the White House before the elections to allow more offshore oil drilling — or whether they are going through an elaborate exercise to give their Members a heaping dose of political cover.”

Many Republicans remain skeptical. Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl said, “Is this just an opportunity for Members to have a cover vote? To vote for something so they can say they did, knowing that it will never become law? Or is it a real exercise? I don’t yet see a willingness on the part of the majority, if you look for example at what the House Democrats have now come out with, to confront the issue of drilling in a meaningful, substantive way.” And House Republican Whip Roy Blunt said, “I’m not sure there’s any real intention to get a bill that could be signed into the law.”

Though it appears that House Democrats will try to move toward getting a vote on their energy package this week, there are real concerns about the bill. Foremost is the fact that the bill would not allow revenue-sharing with states that opt to approve drilling off their shores, giving them little incentive to do so. The headline on McClatchy’s story today sums the concerns: “Democrats’ offshore drilling plan would give states nothing.” Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) apparently sees things the same way. In CongressDaily. Landrieu said, “It is dead on arrival in the Senate. The Senate will never pass a bill without revenue sharing, in my view.”

On the subject of drilling, USA Today noted, “the compromise plans being floated by House Democrats look timid, with 50-mile or 100-mile buffer zones that would leave much acreage off limits and force drilling into the deepest and most expensive areas. . . . Current domestic offshore production is also dangerously concentrated along the Gulf Coast. Drilling elsewhere would diversify risk away from an area that has to shut down every time a major storm approaches . . . .”

Still, it’s worth noting that the renewed focus on production is a positive step, especially given how Democrats spent the summer looking for scapegoats to pin high oil and gasoline prices on, finally settling on “speculators.” Unfortunately for them, The Wall Street Journal writes, “In one of the broadest and most authoritative studies to date, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has offered hard statistical data that financial trading hasn’t been driving [oil] price moves.” So now that Democrats are looking to production, are they willing to have a real debate about real solutions? Americans may have an answer by the end of the week.

The kind of leaders we need

The below editorial (less supporting links) by a fellow Arkansan is commended to you. Please visit the original article for supporting links, source references and to leave comments. Editorial by Kenny J. Wallis, Keep Arkansas Legal: The 2008 election will be a time when we choose people to run the US. Everyone from President to Alderman will have their duties to the people who elect them. Groups such as LULAC, La Raza and The Chamber of Commerce will make an effort to fool voters into electing pro-illegal immigration candidates. These groups along with some in the media have portrayed an image that some industries would cease to exist without millions of uneducated fraudulently documented criminals who could be thieves, rapist, murderers or even terrorist.

The idea that America needs an exploitation system to be successful has been argued before. Many of our Founding Fathers wanted to end slavery when they created this country, but delegates from the South argued that ending slavery would destroy the economy. Early in the 19th century, as the Abolitionist Movement gained strength, pro-slavery politicians used the term "peculiar institution" to describe slavery. They also created The Slave Power a pro-slavery lobby group. The effort to maintain slavery was so successful, that it took the deaths of thousands of Americans in The Civil War to end it.

Then there was practice of Child Labor, which was very popular among mining, agricultural, and oddly enough the newspaper industry. The infamous Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst used underpaid homeless boys called “newsies” to sell papers. The media moguls were forced to reform their exploitation system after the Newsboys Strike of 1899. Perhaps this is the reason why the New York Times and other newspapers cheerlead for another exploitation system, illegal immigration. Federal regulation of child labor was achieved in Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938.

In 1954, [under] Dwight Eisenhower . . . Some 750 agents targeted agricultural areas with a goal of 1000 apprehensions of illegal aliens a day. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. Around 488,000 people fled the country for fear of being apprehended. Operation Wetback deported around 80,000 Mexican nationals in the space of almost a year, local INS officials estimated that an additional 500,000-700,000 had fled to Mexico before the campaign began.

Despite the ending of slavery, child labor, and a massive reduction in illegal immigration, America was able to become the greatest agricultural and industrial nation in the world. Today companies like Tyson Foods, Cargill, and Swiftco, are trying to create for themselves an exploitation system that destroys the middle class and creates a culture of corruption similar to that of the Third World. For Arkansas, they fund groups like The AR Farm Bureau. Stanley Reed, President of the AR Farm Bureau recently stated, “If legislation fails to take into account the unique needs of agriculture – which includes our increased dependence on immigrant labor, our vulnerability to competitively priced, foreign-grown produce and our inability to pass along cost increases – we will all watch as Congress literally takes billions of dollars out of the pockets of farmers and sends it to our competitors overseas”. Tyson Foods, one of the companies that is “dependent on immigrant labor”, paid their CEO Richard Bond $1.14 million in salary according to yahoo finance.

Illegal aliens are 4.4% of the U.S. workforce, according to the Dept. of Labor. Legal workers are doing over 95% of the jobs illegals aren’t doing. Illegals are not the “backbone” of the U.S. economy yet, but many want them to be. Fortunately, we have leaders who want to stop illegal immigration like Mayor Lou Barletta of Hazelton, PA. Despite his law that required proof of citizenship to get an apartment being overturned in the Supreme Court, Barletta managed to force out several illegal aliens from Hazelton. Oklahoma recently passed an immigration reform bill that is forcing thousands of illegals to leave despite repeated lawsuits. Georgia has passed similar legislation. In Maricopa County Arizona, Sherrif Joe Arpaio is enforcing the laws that many Federal officials refuse to enforce. This election, we need to help the Eisenhowers, Barlettas and Arpaios who will actually fix the illegal immigration problem.
