Clear Channel says Rush Limbaugh has right to free speech
Mark P. Mays, CEO of Clear Channel has responded to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in a letterconcerning Rush Limbaugh. Although respectful, Mays made some definitive points: "I can say, that over the years, Mr. Limbaugh has repeatedly praised the dedication and valor of our brave men and women in uniform. Given Mr. Limbaugh's history of support for our soldiers, it would be unfair of me to assume his statements were intended to personally indict combat soldiers simply because they didn't share his own beliefs regarding the war in Iraq. . . . "
"While I do not agree with everything Mr. Limbaugh says on every topic, I do believe that he, along with every American, has the right to voice his or her opinion in the manner they choose. The First Amendment gives every American the right to voice his or her opinion, no matter how unpopular. . . . As Chief Executive Officer, I support each of our on-air talent's right to express his or herself freely, along as the do it within the confines of the laws set forth by Congress. For this reason, I have not and will not impose my own views upon any of our on-air talent. Doing so would, quite frankly, undermine the integrity of the broadcast, undercut the trust with our listeners that they are receiving the true and honest opinions of the radio host, and more importantly fly directly in the face the right of free speech that we hold so dear. . . ." by Michelle Bradford: The first person arrested by Northwest Arkansas’ newly formed immigration task force was charged Friday with a federal crime. Heriberto Gonzalez-Rodriguez, 44, was charged in U. S. District Court in Fayetteville with illegal re-entry by an aggravated felon. He’s being held without bond. A complaint alleges Gonzalez-Rodriguez returned to the United States after being deported to Mexico in 2006. He was arrested Sept. 24 when he went to the Washington County sheriff’s office to register as a sex offender, the complaint states. Police learned Gonzalez-Rodriguez was convicted in 1999 of sexual abuse in Benton County Circuit Court. . . . Gonzalez-Rodriguez was previously deported in August 2006. At that the time, he worked at Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies in Springdale . . . When he was arrested last month, Gonzalez-Rodriguez was working under his brother’s name at Superior Industries in Fayetteville. [Read More] Editor Comment: Great another sex-offender & illegal alien off the street. However, let's face the fact that this special task force, the federal 287 (g ) program, would not have existed if the ACLU, Mexican Consular Office, and possibly even the current Governor had their way. Now we need to know why Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies & Superior Industries permitted an illegal alien sex offender managed to have a job working with them and then who else is working illegally at these companies? What would be their response if Rodriguez has or had assaulted someone? The Conservative Post details why electing liberals might get you killed. No joke! A few points from the story follow:
In 2006, 822 American soldiers were killed in Iraq. In 2006, 12,720 Americans were killed in America’s large cities, or over 15 times the Iraq casualty rate. Where is the outrage from our socialist media, and the Surrendercrats in Congress? . . . But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a much more alarming fact… 80% of all murders happen in America’s large cities . . . [List of large cities with high murder rate with Democrat mayors] . . . Notice a pattern here? All these major cities have liberals running them and their police departments. It is their crime policies, or more accurately lack thereof, that have a direct impact on the murder rate. This is what happens when you have the liberals running your government. They care more about the criminals’ rights than do the victims’. They would rather coddle the criminal element, and focus their efforts on liberal feel-good initiatives like trying to “understand” the reasons they kill, versus enacting tough-on-crime legislation. . . . by Steven Ertelt, Editor, LifeNews: That a handful of pro-life advocates are considering a third party bid for president next year holds no attraction for former Govs. Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. Both Republican presidential candidates have worked to attract pro-life voters and say they won't look to third party bids. . . . No, I think a third party only helps elect Hillary [Clinton]," Huckabee said of the pro-abortion New York senator. "I don't see that being a good strategy for those who really care about pushing a pro-family, pro-life agenda," he added. . . .Romney last week met with about 200 members of the conservative Council for National Policy and assured them of his opposition to abortion. . . . "As Governor Romney has repeatedly made clear, like many other Republicans including Ronald Reagan, he wasn't always pro-life." . . . Salem-News: In the wake of the exclusion of presidential candidate Alan Keyes from next week's Dearborn, Michigan, Presidential Debate, conservative leaders in the Wolverine State today criticized Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis, whose neutrality in the presidential race has been repeatedly called into question. . . . "I think it is shameful that someone with Dr. Alan Keyes' experience in government and credentials in the conservative movement is being kept out of the debate," said Judy Zabik, Genesee County Republican Party Board member. "Voters in Michigan and across the country deserve to hear what this man has to say about where this country is and where it's going. He brings a principled, moral perspective to this race that nobody else brings." . . . [Read More] ARRA Comment:If Michigan GOP is going to let any of the lower tier candidates debate ( many with less than 2% in the polls), then let Alan Keyes debate. I would bet that if Newt had declared himself a candidate, Michigan's chairman would have found away to let him attend the debate. Fred Thompson Fundraising Going Well - Campaign staffers pleased
Updated data:Fred Thompson's campaign funds were higher than potentially expected by his staffers on Monday.Donations this 1st Quarter = $9.3 million (mostly since September 5th);Total Donations since June 4th = $12.7 million (yes people donated $3.4 million before Fred Thompson even announced). Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: In an effort to learn more about what is going on inside the Fred Thompson campaign, we probed sources inside the campaign who revealed that campaign fundraising is going well. Despite officially entering the race less than one month ago, Fred Thompson will soon be announcing fundraising totals in the area of $8 million. Additional facts worth noting are that:
(1) More than 60% of that $8 million came in after Thompson’s Sept. announcement. This first "quarter” was mostly the month of September.
(2) Donation levels post-announcement equaled approximately $200,000 per day.
(3) Donor base is now around 70,000 people. That is a first quarter donor base larger than that revealed by other Republican candidates. The campaign appears to be finding financial success as the Fred-heads rallied to the campaign.
Staffers were also pleased with a The New York Times article yesterday by Jo Beckerabout Fred Thompson's time as a U.S. Senator. The story identifies that the “lazy like a fox” charge stems from the fact that Thompson avoided the DC song and dance / schmoozing in favor of detailed study of policy. Thompson chose to prioritize issues – entitlements, term limits, tax reform – that had more impact on the government than on the headlines. Excerpts from the article reveal that:
“Mr. Thompson brought a lawyer’s sensibility to his deliberations, rather than that of a rote partisan…”
“Records show that Mr. Thompson delved into the areas that mattered most to him, regularly writing his own speeches and demanding detailed memorandums that often ran well past the one-page limit favored by some senators.”
“He focused on green-eyeshade issues like budget and regulatory reform that, while not exactly the stuff of headlines, have far-reaching impact.”
“On the lazy charge, I have to chuckle because I was there sometimes until 1 in the morning working with the man,” said Paul Noe, a Thompson aide when the senator led the Governmental Affairs Committee.
“In confidential surveys sent out by the Senate Republican leadership, Mr. Thompson recommended giving priority to issues like Congressional term limits and overhauling welfare, entitlement programs and the tax code.”
“In an interview, Mr. Thompson said his priorities had not changed. The government’s primary responsibility is to address such problems as “a growing bureaucracy becoming more and more incompetent,” he said, adding that keeping the focus on such issues is 'a politically good thing, too.'”
Reagan’s Disciples Plan Relaunch Of Conservative Movement
by Marc Ambinger: Fed up with neocons, theocons and convict cons, a group of former aides to Ronald Reagan want to reanimate the Republican Party by reviving the organization that brought Reagan to power. The revitalized Citizens For The Republic -- or CFTR -- has already secured $17 million in solid financial commitments, according to an official involved in raising money for the organization. Craig Shirley, a Republican strategist and historian, has agreed to serve as chairman of the board. Others who will participate or who have agreed to raise money are Paul Laxalt, the former Nevada Senator and close Reagan friend; former Reagan attorney general Richard Allen; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and conservative activists Brent Bozell and Gary Bauer. . . . Citizen Letter Condemning Harry Reid’s Attack On Rush Limbaugh, Free Speech
MRC Action: Liberal activist groups and the liberal media have launched an all-out attack against Rush Limbaugh by falsely claiming that Rush called any soldier opposing the war a “phony soldier.” As MRC has documented, the attack is unfounded. . . . To counter the actions of Reid and the liberal media, the Media Research Center is moving rapidly to rally 50,000 citizens to personally respond to this attack by signing a group letter that will be delivered directly to Sen. Mexico Government to bolster illegal immigrant defense
KeepArkansasLegal has posted an article with comments about the Mexican Government again moving to interfere in the US with the opposition to illegal immigration Comments in parenthesis are by KeepArkansasLegal:
The Mexican government (The property of Carlos Slim, Drug Cartels, and other monopolies) is giving its consulates in the U.S. (one of these cancers is in Little Rock, Arkansas) wide latitude to ramp up a campaign to toughen their defense of immigrants and plans to give them more resources as well, officials familiar with the strategy said. The move comes as deportations reach an all-time high in the toughest crackdown in decades by the U.S. government and police authorities. (not tough enough) Among the actions under discussion are the creation of an anti-defamation league similar to that focused on protecting Jews (Jews created a civilized nation while under attack from Islamic regimes and don't blame the US for every problem they have. The Mexican "Government" has squandered a nation rich in resources and has abandoned it's people to Communist and Drug Cartels) budget increases for some of the 47 consulates, especially in regions such as North Texas, where Mexican migration has been swift and plentiful; and a media campaign aimed at counteracting groups opposed to illegal immigration (keeparkansaslegal and the majority of Americans) and sometimes legal immigration. The effort underscores the tension in U.S. communities grappling with problems created by illegal immigration. And it is sure to further incense groups demanding a crackdown on immigration, both legal and illegal. "Our fight is no longer inside the Beltway," said one senior Mexican official, who agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity. (what's he afraid of?) "We have been forced to change our strategy." . . . [Read More]

Generals Shoot Demonstrators & Switch off the Internet
by Seth Mydans: BANGKOK, Oct. 3 - It was about as simple and uncomplicated as shooting demonstrators in the streets. Embarrassed by smuggled video and photographs that showed their people rising up against them, the generals who run Myanmar simply switched off the Internet. Until Friday television screens and newspapers abroad were flooded with scenes of tens of thousands of red-robed monks in the streets and of chaos and violence as the junta stamped out the biggest popular uprising there in two decades. But then the images, text messages and postings stopped, shut down by generals who belatedly grasped the power of the Internet to jeopardize their crackdown. “Finally they realized . . .their biggest enemy, and they took it down” . . . From Senate sources:CQ Today (subscription only) reports on Republican efforts to permanently ban Internet access taxes and notes Sen. McConnell’s video on the subject. The Weekly Standard reports on Congressional Democrats slow-walking action on extending the current ban. Grover Norquist joins the chorus calling for permanently extending the moratorium in an op-ed at RealClearPolitics.
The positive news of the day is the continuing strength of the U.S. economy. 110,000 jobs were added in September, and the numbers were August were revised upward to show 89,000 jobs added that month (previous reports said the economy narrowly lost jobs in August). The APreports the news but continues the MSM’s relentless attempts to talk down the economy by complaining about the 4.7% unemployment rate. What the AP leaves out, though, is that the revised August numbers mean that the American economy has now set a record of 49 consecutive months of job growth, the longest ever.
Sen. McConnell said of the good economic news, “This report is a milestone, showing the American economy has created jobs for 49 consecutive months, breaking the record set under President Reagan. Smart economic policies led principally by a lowered tax burden created the economic environment necessary for sustained growth, and the American workforce took it from there.”
Meanwhile, The New York Times hasdiscovered that medical malpractice reform actually works where it is implemented in a report on doctors moving to the state. The Times writes, “Four years after Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment limiting awards in medical malpractice lawsuits, doctors are responding as supporters predicted, arriving from all parts of the country to swell the ranks of specialists at Texas hospitals and bring professional health care to some long-underserved rural areas.”

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: I have been more than concerned about the press spreading the rumored threats that Christian conservatives will leave the GOP if Giuliani wins the nomination." Rasmussen Reports has identified that "27% of Republicans would vote for pro-life third party instead of Giuliani." Most of the members of Republican Assemblies are Christian conservatives - or better yet Reagan conservatives, and they are not involved in the alleged movement.
Today, Bobby Eberle has an excellent article:Would I Vote for Rudy Giuliani? A few quotes follow, but please read this his article: "This past weekend, Christian conservative members of the Council for National Policy met in Salt Lake City to discuss the state of the Republican Party and the idea of bailing out of the party if a social conservative is not picked as the Republican presidential nominee. Ideas were floated about possibly supporting a third-party candidate. . . . Such a bid could prove disastrous for the GOP by splitting the vote." Disastrous? Yes! Impossible? Yes! The country is not set up for third-party candidates to succeed. That is just a fact. Arguments about the role of government fall naturally into two camps: conservative and liberal -- those who feel more power should reside with the people and those who feel more power should reside with the government. And thus, we have the Republicans and the Democrats. . . .
"I get e-mails all the time saying "if so and so isn't the nominee, I'm not going to vote." Ok, congratulations, you are directly helping the Democrats and far left take over the country. Perhaps you will feel good hanging out with your buddies saying, "Yep, I didn't vote for that Republican. I just stayed home." In the mean time, the country will endure possibly irreparable harm from complete left-wing control.
"We have no perfect candidate in the field. Currently, my top pick is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. I have written about him on several occasions, but even he has some issues regarding taxes levied in Arkansas that he needs to explain. Will I continue to support him? Likely so. But what happens if he doesn't win? What if former Gov. Mitt Romney is the nominee? Will I vote for him over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Will I vote for Sen. John McCain over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Will I vote for former Mayor Rudy Giuliani over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Will I vote for former Sen. Fred Thompson over Hillary Clinton? Yes! I will do so, and I will do everything I can to help our Senate candidates and get the message out to the American people that conservative values are what is best for the country. I will also continue to work to change (not abandon) the Republican Party. That is what we should all be doing. Let's fight in the primary. Then, let's come together and fight for our country." . . . [Read More]
As ARRA editor, I received the following written comment by Gary Bauer from his press manager. Gary Bauer is a Christian conservative political advocate and former presidential candidate. Bauer believes that there are certain core issues for the Republican Party -- low taxes, strong defense, and pro-life" However, he does not support the formation of a third party. Bayer issued this terse warning that sums up the consequences of a third party. "I can't think of a bigger disaster for social conservatives, defense conservatives and economic conservatives than Hillary Clinton in the White House."
History has evidences third parties disasters. Teddy Roosevelt, former Republican President, in a tiff ran as a third party candidate and lost. William Jennings Bryan, a Southern Conservative Democrat, ran on a third party ticket and lost. Ross Perot lost his bid for president and his third party antics split the conservative and the Republicans lost the White House and as a result we experienced the adventures of Bill and Hillary Clinton in the White House for eight years.
Conservatives' worst nightmare will return if influential people run a spoiler third party conservative candidate. Voters for the alleged Christian conservative third party candidate will fracture the Christian vote which the liberal Democrats will love because they are not expecting these votes in the first place. The liberal backed media would have a field day using the 3rd Party candidate as a weapon against the Republican candidate.
I concur with Bobby Eberle and Gary Bauer. Christian conservative should not be misled to vote for a third party candidate or to stay home. In either situation, they will be casting their vote for the Democrat Party's liberal choice for the day, most likely Hillary Clinton. I am very disappointed in the leaders of the Christian groups who meet and discussed such an option. They have depicted a vote my way in the primary or else arrogance. If these leaders continue to use their influence to sway their faithful constituents to accept a third party candidate, then I will be required to ask why would they do the work of left-wing Democrats. Their actions surely would be supported and approved of by left-wing radicals.
Frankly, conservatives of all types have a powerful influence when working together. Ronald Reagan proved this. But going it alone on a litmus issue is a definite looser. Unlike Bobby Eberle, my top pick is Fred Thompson but I also like aspects and positions of other candidates. But what happens if Fred doesn't win? What if former Gov. Mitt Romney is the nominee? Will I vote for him over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Will I vote for Sen. John McCain over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Will I vote for former Mayor Rudy Giuliani over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Will I vote for former Mike Huckabee over Hillary Clinton? Yes! Like Bobby and other conservatives, I will do everything to get the message out to other voters that conservative values are what is best for the country. I will also continue to work to change (not abandon) the Republican Party. That is also the way of the Republican Assemblies. That is what we should all be doing. Let's fight in the primary. Then, let's come together and fight for our country. [Bobby thanks for the use of your words; they fit me perfectly because like many other conservatives we also were already using them or had them in our hearts. I hope readers will join us in using them as well.] Tags:Arkansas Republican Assembly, ARRA, Bill Smith, Bobby Eberle, Election 2008, Gary Bauer, GOPUSA, National Federation of Republican Assemblies, presidential candidates, Rasmussen Reports, RepublicanTo share or post to your site, click on "Post Link". From Senate sources: On November 1, the ban on taxes for internet access expires. This would leave state and local government free to impose taxes on your ISP bill, just as there have been taxes on your phone bill for decades. Many states are looking for new revenue sources, and consumers and small businesses could pay the price. Fox News reported on the looming expiration of the ban last night.
Senate Republicans want to permanently extend the ban. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell recorded a video yesterday declaring his determination to make sure the ban on internet access taxes is made permanent. Don Surber highlighted statements from Sens. McCain and Sununu on their bill to ban internet access taxes.
Also yesterday, Senate Republicans successfully added $3 billion in border security funding to the Defense appropriations bill. Among other things, the money will go to hire and train more border patrol agents and build border fencing and vehicle barriers. Also included is $60 million for employment eligibility verification.
Meanwhile, Democrats continue to demagogue the president’s veto of the expanded SCHIP program with outrageous rhetoric. In contrast, Sens. McConnell, Kyl, Lott, and others will hold a press conference this afternoon to spotlight a Republican alternative that reauthorizes SCHIP and covers more kids without turning the program into a first step on the road to government-run healthcare.
Today On The Floor: The Senate reconvened at 9 AM today. The chamber will begin consideration of the fiscal 2008 Commerce-Justice-Science (CJS) appropriations bill (H.R. 3093).
Senate Majority Leader Reid indicated his desire to complete work on the $56 billion bill today.
CQ’s SenateWatch reports, “Tom Coburn, R-Okla., will offer several amendments ‘that will force senators to make choices between questionable earmarks and vital priorities,’ . . .”
Yesterday, the Senate passed the fiscal 2008 Defense appropriations bill (H.R. 3222) by voice vote.
Reid announced on Wednesday that following completion of the CJS bill, the Senate will move to the consideration of the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill (H.R. 3043). A Real American Hero Defending the US Flag [Video]
A Big Hat Tip to TexasFred for passing on a message addressing that Reno, Nevada, FOX News did a story, Reno Vet Cuts Down Mexican Flag Illegally Flown On Top of US Flag, which identifies U.S. Veteran Jim Brossard cutting down the flags and taking possession of the U.S. flag, tossing the Mexican flag to the ground and daring the Mexican bar owner to JUST TRY and take the U.S. flag away from him. Below is a copy of the news video from DailyMotion.com:
To quote TexasFred: "When it is displayed from the same flagpole with another flag - of a state, community, society or Scout unit - the flag of the United States must always be at the top except that the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for Navy personnel when conducted by a Naval chaplain on a ship at sea. Fox News: President Bush kept his word and vetoed the five-year, $35 billion expansion of the current State Children's Health Insurance Program, SCHIP, because the expanded program offers government-run health care to too many Americans who don't need it. Under the vetoed plan, government-sponsored health coverage would have been expanded from 6.6 million people, mostly children, to include an additional 4 million kids and 700,000 adults. SCHIP is available to people who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid, but are not able to afford private insurance.
Bush said, "I just vetoed a bill today, and I want to explain to you why. It's called SCHIP, children's health insurance policy. The intent of the program was to focus on poorer children, not adults or families earning up to $83,000 a year. It is estimated that if this program were to become law, one out of every three person(s) that would subscribe to the new expanded SCHIP would leave private insurance. The policies of the government ought to be to help poor children and to focus on poor children." The president has said that the 61-cent tax on each pack of cigarettes to pay for the measure is regressive, and the government should not be providing health care to families whose income is as much as $80,000 a year. He also expressed concern that the offer of low-cost, government-provided health care will encourage many people who already are covered by private insurance to switch, adding considerable strain to the government system.
Democrats are seeking to find enough votes in the House to override the veto. The Senate already has enough votes to override. House Minority Whip Roy Blunt said he was "absolutely confident" that the veto will be sustained. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Wednesday that Congress sent the bill to the president knowing that he wouldn't sign it, and it's now up to lawmakers to come up with an alternative. Bush had requested $5 billion more for the program over five years. Perino said Congress must negotiate a bill that will ensure that children in families that make less than 200 percent of the poverty level are taken care of before the program is expanded beyond them . . . Thompson Leads for 4th Week in Poll; Giuliani almost even
Rasmussen Reports: This week was the fourth straight week that Thompson has led Giuliani in the national poll for the Republican nomination. Fred Thompson 25%; Rudy Giuliani 23%; Mitt Romney 13% and John McCain 10%. Still leading the lower tier is Mike Huckabee with 6%. Four other candidates split 4% of the vote while 19% are undecided (weekly results). Even though Thompson leads by 2%, Giuliani is within the poll’s margin of error, meaning that the race is even. However, Mitt Romney leads in Iowa and New Hampshire. Rasmussen Reports noted that Romney needs to win big in both Iowa and New Hampshire if he is to remain a viable top-tier candidate. Polling data, however, shows that his lead is shrinking in New Hampshire . . . Tax Wolf at the Door - Internet Tax Moratorium About to Expire
The Tax Wolf is at the door. And if nothing is done quickly, you will soon be seeing higher cost for Internet services and purchases. There’s been a ban on Internet access taxes in place for several years now by it will expires on Nov. 1. There are a lot of states out there that are looking for revenue, and plenty of them are eying this as a potential income source. Letting the moratorium on Internet taxes expire is a back door tax increase. Americans don't need tax rs on their modems. Sen. Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, is seeking to extend the ban permanently. He’s recorded a video addressing the situation, which you can see below or click here:
Dan Riehl at Riehl World View presents an interesting comparison of two vote lists: Michelle Malkin lists the Dems condemning Rush Limbaugh. TPM's list of Dems condemned the General Betray Us ad. Riehl noted the following Democrats Senators who took the time to condemn Rush Limbaugh on trumped up charges but couldn't be bothered to condemn the now infamous General Betray Us ad. He asks, "Where was their outrage when the current commanding General in Iraq was having his integrity impugned and why should we believe they are now standing up for the troops, when they couldn't even bother to stand up for the man leading them just a week or two ago?"

The Agenda: The dems fear Rush Limbaugh's speaking out for truth! One man -- free speech! Ditto Rush! Michelle Malkinmaintains the vote on Rush is a backdoor restoration of the Fairness Doctrine. She identifies that The Hill underscores her point. In regard to the Moveon.org ad condemning General David Petraeus, these dems showed their contempt for authority and integrity. They would rather score points discounting and demeaning the word of the US Military Commander in the field. They do not understand "Duty, Honor, Country." ICYMI - Arkansas US Representatives Praise General Petraus & Condem MoveOn.org’s
In case you missed it, last Wednesday, Arkansas' four U.S. Congressmen (Marion Berry, John Boozman, Mike Ross and Vic Snider) were in agreement! They joined in passing a House resolution praising the patriotism of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, and condemning a MoveOn.org ad that referred to Petraeus as “General Betray Us.” The final vote was 341-79 (with 79 Democrats voting against the resolution). The resolution was attached to a stopgap measure funding Cabinet budgets until mid-November. The roll call! Fred Thompson's Campaign Themes & the 12th Commandment
Fred Thompson is discussing campaign themes, and talking about how he intends to win back the Reagan Democrats by offering them a clear choice: 1) Limited Government VS Big Government and 2) States’ Rights VS Nanny State. In the Politico, Thompson acknowledges that the Reagan Democrats are still there – it’s the GOP that needs to be rebuilt: I asked him if that meant his party needed to find Reagan Democrats again. “I don’t think we need to find them; I don’t think they have gone anywhere,” he said. “I think we [Republicans] are the ones maybe that have moved in some cases.” Thompson said he meant that big spending and “ethical lapses” by Republicans were having a “dampening effect on our own people” and others but that “hopefully we are moving away from that situation.” At a time when fewer and fewer people are identifying themselves as Republicans, Thompson said he hoped to attract the votes of independents. Thompson believes that a clear choice between Big Government and Limited Government will rebuild the 1980/1994 ideals that brought people into the Republican tent, rather than driving them out . . . Fred also follows a 12th Commandment. California Yankee reports:Roger Simon asked Fred Thompson if he is an 11th Commandment man — Never speak ill of a fellow Republican — Fred responded: I am more of a 12th Commandment man: Don’t speak ill of them until they speak ill of me. And then really speak ill of them. Thompson is starting to go after fellow Republican candidates. His stump speech contains a not so subtle dig at Giuliani and Romney, warning that Republicans must “stay with our principles” when it comes to choosing a nominee . . . Politicol, The Crypt: Three senior House Democrats are proposing a new tax to pay for the Iraq war, as well as vowing to oppose any funding bill for Iraq that does not include a policy for ending the conflict. House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-WI), Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA), chairman of the Defense subcommittee on House Appropriations, and Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), will soon unveil a "surtax" on taxes owed by Americans to help cover the cost of the war, the trio announced this morning. The tax is designed to raise $140 billion to $150 billion annually, and would range from a 2% surtax on low-income Americans to as much as 15% for wealthy taxpayers. Obey and Murtha also said that they would not move an Iraq supplemental funding bill, needed to pay for combat operations in 2008, unless a "goal" of having all U.S. combat troops out of the country by January 2009, troop deployment times are shortened, and President Bush demonstrates that will engage in "an intensive, broad scale diplomatic offensive involving other countries in the region." . . . Tony Perkins, Washington Update, FRC: Over the past few days some of the usual suspects in our nation's debates over religion and politics have lambasted Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for saying in an interview that he would prefer that the U.S. President be a Christian. Specifically, McCain reportedly told Beliefnet.com, "I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles ... personally, I prefer someone who I know . . . has a solid grounding in my faith." McCain has been harshly, and unfairly, criticized for the remarks, and most of the criticism, ironically enough, has come from a chorus of groups that have over the years raised divisive, identity-group politics to an art form. These are the same folks who write breathless editorials wondering when our nation will elect its first "woman President," as if that should be an overriding consideration - to somehow make history, rather than lead the nation in the right direction. McCain clearly prefers a leader who thinks, as the overwhelmingly Christian founders of this nation did, that our rights - to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness - are gifts from God. He is speaking a core truth about the origin of human rights. These rights include religious liberty, and it is no accident that essentially Christian nations first enshrined this insight into their basic law. . . . Jim Davis, a longtime Pulaski County Republican Committee member and defender of small business, recently published a guest column in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette critiquing the Democratic Congress's plan to raise taxes on energy companies. Davis points out that the tax hike would drive up costs for small business owners. Davis writes: "Small business owners don't ask for a helping hand from the federal government. Unlike many larger concerns, they are not the recipients of corporate welfare. They can't afford to retain expensive lobbyists in Washington like big corporations. Instead, they merely ask that they be left alone to do what they do best: create jobs, serve customers and live the American dream. Why must Congress insist on standing in their way?" by Bobby Eberle. GOPUSA: Democrat Sen. Harry Reid took to the Senate Floor on Monday for a speech in which he blasted conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh. In his rant, Reid accused Limbaugh of using the term "phony soldiers" to apply to any serviceman or woman who opposed the war. As you might imagine, Reid had his facts completely wrong and wasted the Senate's time instead of debating serious issues. But, what's more remarkable is the fact that Reid took his marching orders from the far left group Media Matters, who originally spun Limbaugh's remarks to suit their needs. ARRA Editor: San Francisco federal judges are using their positions to protect the jobs of illegals and interfering with addressing the hiring of illegal aliens. It is time that the US Congress use its authority to limit activist left-wing judges interference in addressing illegal immigration employment. The article below addresses the latest interference by activist San Francisco judges. Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee have gained laughs by making fun of the government's inability to identify illegal aliens. The article evidences the government use of technology to identify those who cannot be confirmed as legal. The government was prepared to issue "141,000 no match letters, covering 8.7 million employee." Let's see, the government uses technology and liberal courts intervene, will Gingrich and Huckabee continue to mock government agencies or finally address the activist court system? by Julia Preston: A federal judge in San Francisco yesterday extended for 10 days a temporary ban on a central measure in the Bush administration’s campaign to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. After a two-hour hearing, the judge, Charles R. Breyer of Federal District Court, strongly suggested that he was leaning against the government in the case. The ban further delayed the start of a rule, which establishes steps an employer must follow after receiving a notice from the Social Security Administration, known as a no-match letter, reporting that an employee’s identity information does not match the agency’s records. . . . In an Aug. 31 decision, Judge Maxine M. Chesney, also of the San Francisco court, delayed the rule from taking effect before yesterday’s hearing and barred the Social Security Administration from sending out about 141,000 no-match letters, covering 8.7 million employees, which include notices from the Department of Homeland Security about the rule . . . Christian leaders meet in Salt Lake City to plan options in presidential campaign
WorldNetDaily: Some of the top leaders in Christian pro-family activism – including James Dobson of Focus on the Family – met in Salt Lake City yesterday to plot a strategy should Rudy Giuliani or another supporter of legalized abortion be nominated by the Republican Party as its presidential candidate. Not only was there a consensus among activists to withhold support for the Republican nominee, there was even discussion about supporting the entry of a new candidate to challenge the frontrunners . . . U.S. Rep. John Boozman (R-AR) today joined with the U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Arkansas, and members of several local law enforcement agencies, in announcing the formation of a regional task force to combat sexual predators in the Third District.
Boozman said: “Today is an important date for the children and families of the Third District. Today, four of our district’s largest counties will come together to take on sexual offenders, and I am happy to join the men and women of ten local and federal law enforcement agencies in announcing this important combined effort which will serve as a vital weapon to protect our families.
“In the age of the Internet, and the ease of travel among the I-540 corridor, it is important to create a regional effort to take on sexual predators on all fronts,” Boozman said. “I am extremely pleased with, and proud of, the leadership offered by U.S. Attorney Bob Balfe, Marshal Richard O’Connell, and the chiefs and sheriffs of both the River Valley and Northwest Arkansas to create this regional task force. It is my hope that this task force can serve as a model of how a region can come together to combat crime and solve the needs of its residents.”
The regional task force will combine the efforts of the Benton, Crawford, Sebastian and Washington County Sheriff’s Offices; the Bentonville, Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Rogers, Siloam Springs, Springdale, and Van Buren Police Departments; the U.S. Marshals Service for the Western District of Arkansas; and the Western District U.S. Attorney’s Office. The task force will be funded by grants awarded to the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office ($507,850) and Benton County Sheriff’s Office ($550,000) announced in September. The grants come from the Dept. of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program, and will be used to develop a multi-jurisdictional task force, which will identify, investigate, arrest and prosecute sex offenders. The task force will designate investigators from the participating agencies and use purchased equipment, public and private computer databases, confidential informants, anonymous tips, and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies to bring criminals to justice. Bipartisian Effort by Senators to Support Democracy in Burma [Video]
As we continue to hear the news coming out of Burma, we are pleased with the bipartisian efforts by Senators: Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) , regarding their support for the protesters in Burma as expressed in the following video:
ARRA: This week we learn that the Democrats have forced through an expanded State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) that would double -- from 4 million to 8 million -- the number of children covered. The reauthorization bill "fails to focus on poor children, and instead creates a new entitlement program for higher-income households," said White House Press Secretary Dana Perino in a written statement. "The president will veto this bill because it directs scarce funding to higher incomes at the expense of poor families." See:Senate passes children's health insurance bill, Bush vows to veto
It is time again to focus on "Crafting a Better Compromise to Cover Kids." Such and approach is provided by Nina Owcharenko and Stuart M. Butler, Ph.D. of the Heritage Foundation: On September 21, House and Senate leaders announced a deal to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) by $35 billion over five years, to $60 billion. This "compromise" does little to bridge the differences in opinion on how best to address the needs of uninsured children. Instead, Congress should consider a bipartisan approach that is broad and balanced. Congress should reauthorize SCHIP and use innovative policy tools to expand access to private coverage for children. Read Full Article

by Bridget Johnson, GOP Vixen: The march toward autocratic rule in Venezuela continues, with Hugo Chavez crafting new textbooks that teach Marxism and glorify his Bolivarian revolution. And if private schools do not use the government texts, they'll be shut down:
Last year Chavez' Minister of Education, Aristobulo Isturiz, laid the groundwork for the new 'Bolivarian' education program to be imposed in Venezuela when he announced: 'Teachers should be the first soldiers of the revolution ... No Director of a public school shall have his, her job validated unless an evaluation is made, so that we are certain that they know what is the type of republic we want.'
Having already consolidated control over Venezuela's public schools and universities, including bringing in Cuban indoctrination experts to consult and injecting Marxism into the curriculum even in the medical schools, Chavez is now assaulting the last bastion of academic independence, the private secondary schools to which business and intellectual leaders send their kids. Objecting that the private schools teach 'capitalism' and 'consumerism,' Chavez has declared that if these schools do not allow inspectors to keep them compliant with the socialist agenda of the 'new Bolivarian educational system,' the schools will be shut down.
Zulay Campos of the Bolivarian State Academic Commission, which will carry out inspections to make sure that private schools comply with the government's curriculum stated: 'We must train socially minded people to help the community, and that's why the revolution's socialist program is being implemented ... If they attack us because we're indoctrinating, well yes, we're doing it, because those capitalist ideas that our young people have — and that have done so much damage to our people — must be eliminated.'"
It's so nice that all of our American actors and activists who've gone to worship at the Temple of Hugo support the thought police. Also -- quite amusing considering the above photo -- Hugo has blamed the U.S. for big boobs:
"The president went on to discuss what he considers to be the brainwashing of the capitalist world and criticized the major media and mainstream movie industry that penetrate other nations and cultures with the values and ideas of the United States. He criticized, for example, the increasing popularity of breast implants among young women and blamed it on young women's desire 'to be like Barbie.'" . . . [Read More]
