Republican Senator Brownback to Run for PresidentJan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), one of the closest congressional allies of social conservative activists, said today that he will run for president in 2008. "Ours is a great nation and I make one pledge to you, to use our greatness for goodness,'' said Brownback, 50. With that goal in mind, Brownback, who made his announcement in Topeka, Kansas, said that he supports "the institution of marriage as a union of a man and a woman for life.'' He also called for finding a cure for cancer, U.S. self- reliance in energy, winning the war in Iraq and a flat tax as an alternative to the current income tax system. A member of the Senate Appropriations and Judiciary panels, Brownback is best known for the central role he takes in debates on social policy. He is one of the Senate's most outspoken critics of abortion and embryonic stem cell research. Read More ... The Wall Street Journal - STILLMORE, Ga. -- After a wave of raids by federal immigration agents on Labor Day weekend, a local chicken-processing company called Crider Inc. lost 75 percent of its mostly Hispanic 900-member work force. ... For local African-Americans, the dramatic appearance of federal agents presented an unexpected opportunity. Crider suddenly raised pay at the plant. An advertisement in the weekly Forest-Blade newspaper blared "Increased Wages" at Crider, starting at $7 to $9 an hour -- more than a dollar above what the company had paid many immigrant workers. ... Of 400 candidates sent to Crider -- most of them black -- the plant hired about 200.
Crider is still about 300 people short of its work force before the immigration raids. It is now bringing Laotian Hmong immigrant workers and their families from Minnesota and Wisconsin, with hopes that they'll stay on the job and build new roots in Stillmore. Read More ... Grassroots Restrictions Removed from Ethics Bill which passed. In a victory for grassroots groups across the country, Republicans stood united Thursday night and helped strike Section 220 from the Senate Ethics Bill. This section would have put undue regulations on the activities of grassroots organizations free speech with their constituents. Almost all Democrats voted to restrict grassroots groups and free speech by keeping Section 220 in the bill including Arkansas Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor. (Senate Recorded Vote).
The restrictions would have affected any group conducting the smallest amount of lobbying, and local issue advocates who didn't comply properly would face fines and jail sentences for noncompliance. Groups including National Right to Life, Family Research Council, American Family Association, Focus on the Family, Traditional Values Coalition, Gun Owners of America, "church pastors", and others, were worried about bill S. 1. retricting their rights to identify issues and to ask their constituents to express their congressional representatives. The provision were so onerous that even the American Civil Liberties Union sided with conservative groups in opposition to them. There have never been more media choices. Nothing -- except consumer resistance -- precludes liberal entry into the talk radio market. But the First Amendment doesn't require people to listen to and support your message. Liberals had no interest in balance before the advent of conservative talk radio. They don't have any interest in balance now; indeed we're finally approaching a balance: new media versus old media. But to them "balance" means dominance, just like "bipartisanship" means Republican capitulation. With the Fairness Doctrine liberals would use government to micromanage the content of talk radio, realizing that they simply can't compete on an equal playing field in that medium.Read More ... Thursday, January 18, 2007Bush's Totalization Plan threatens Social Security![]() Totalization is the bureaucratic buzzword for the plan to put millions of illegal Mexican workers into the U.S. Social Security system. They would collect U.S. benefits based on their U.S earnings under false or stolen Social Security numbers plus alleged earnings in Mexico. U.S. citizens must work 10 years to be eligible for Social Security benefits, but the totalization agreement would allow Mexicans to qualify with only 18 months of work in the United States, and pretend to make up the difference by assuming work in Mexico. It is highly doubtful that the illegal immigrants ever paid into a Mexican system for eight and a half years. ... The Bush totalization plan would put millions of Mexicans onto the rolls of the U.S. Social Security system just as the baby boom generation retires. The White House won't deny that imposing higher taxes on U.S. workers is "on the table" to deal with the expected shortfall. The Bush totalization plan would lure even more Mexicans into the U.S. illegally in the hope of amnesty and eligibility for Social Security benefits for themselves, as well as for their spouses and dependents who may never have lived in the U.S. Totalization is part and parcel of the Council on Foreign Relations five-year plan for the "establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community" with a common "outer security perimeter." Wednesday, January 17, 2007A travesty - Border Agents to report to prison today![]() Compean and Ramos were sentenced in October to 12 and 11 years, respectively, in federal prison for the non-fatal shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler. Both men said they believed the smuggler was carrying a weapon during a foot chase along the Texas-Mexico border on Feb. 17, 2005. Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila, the smuggler, was given immunity by the U.S. government in exchange for testifying against the agents. He also received medical treatment at a U.S. Army hospital after the shooting. He is suing the Border Patrol for $5 million. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, who along with more than 50 other congressmen has been advocating for the agents since August, said more than a decade in prison for each man is a harsh punishment. "The government had to choose between supporting a drug dealer or supporting their own border agents," Poe said. "They chose to support a drug dealer. The federal government was on the wrong side of the border that day." Repeated attempts by numerous members of Congress, grass-roots organizations and supporters to get a presidential pardon for the two agents have fallen on deaf ears at the White House, said Andy Ramirez, chairman of the Chino-based Friends of the Border Patrol. Once more: It's time to drop the Arkansas grocery tax
Baxter Bulletin Editorial 1/15/06: It's safe to say people in the Twin Lakes Area believe Arkansas' state sales tax on groceries should go the way of the dinosaur, the dodo and disco. As we've said time and again, the grocery tax is regressive, oppressive and offensive even though the Legislature's seen it as a key element in providing state revenue. Now, however, with an $843 million revenue surplus the time is right to give Arkansans — all Arkansans — a break and get rid of the grocery tax. It's what the people want. It's what Gov. Mike Beebe wants.
But it's not what House Speaker Benny Petrus, D-Stuttgart, and Senate President Pro Tempore Jack Critcher, D-Batesville, want. They plan to fight the governor — and the people — on the grocery tax issue. The two legislative leaders recommend other means of providing tax relief. Mr. Petrus recommends a state income tax break. Mr. Critcher thinks eliminating the sales tax on used cars, and maybe property tax relief, would be better. If you buy a used car, it probably would. But not all Arkansans buy used cars, or even drive for that matter, so it wouldn't be that much relief. Besides, how often do people buy used cars? However, all Arkansans do eat, and every family in the state buys groceries regularly, which means dropping the grocery tax would provide a greater benefit for more people. Granted, everybody's looking for a piece of the surplus pie, and there are other financial needs in the state, such as schools and highways. But for years Arkansans have pleaded for tax relief, and legislators have said they'd do something someday. Well, someday is here. There won't be a more opportune time to finally rid Arkansas of the state grocery tax. For a change, the Legislature could do something the people want that really does help them instead of adding taxes or creating breaks only for some. The 86th General Assembly is just getting under way, but people need to keep reminding their lawmakers of how they feel and what they want. ... Contact your lawmakers and let them know your opinions. by Wes Vernon: So the polls say Americans want us out of Iraq. Of course, the pollster rarely asks his interviewee to think through the consequences of whatever position he or she takes. It's quickie journalism. I remember working newsrooms where some of my colleagues would get all excited and build entire stories on polls, even those of dubious credibility. Sure, we could pull the troops out of Iraq tomorrow. The question is -- what happens then? Think that's not our problem? Think we can just quietly turn tail and withdraw to our shores as we did in Vietnam and forget about it? No consequences? . . .
To sum it up... If we walk away from Iraq, we face the prospect of a strengthened Iran with a half-crazed madman threatening nuclear annihilation, the entire Middle East in flames, as our economy here in the U.S. takes a nightmare nosedive beyond anything even imagined in the Great Depression. America's enemies would have us by the throat. The Islamofascists and Marxist regimes the world over are just waiting for the time when this nation is as helpless as Gulliver was when tied down by the Lilliputians. That's when they will move in for the kill. On top of all that, of course, the "sleeper" cells of terrorists here on our soil would be emboldened. What follows such chaos is almost beyond what any of us wants to contemplate.
