Hillary Clinton wanted to be a Marine

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: From the 1994 archives of the NY Times before the NY Times was taken over by empty headed left leaning reporters, we get our trivia for the day:
The First Lady has offered a kaleidoscope of images to the public, but today she added the most curious one yet: Private Hillary. Speaking at a lunch on Capitol Hill honoring military women, Hillary Rodham Clinton said that she once visited a recruiting office in Arkansas to inquire about joining the Marines.

. . . she became interested in the military in 1975, the year she married Bill Clinton and the year she was teaching at the University of Arkansas law school in Fayetteville. She was 27 then, she said, and the Marine recruiter was about 21. She was interested in joining either the active forces or the reserves, she recalled, but was swiftly rebuffed by the recruiter, who took a dim view of her age and her thick glasses. 'Not Very Encouraging'

"You're too old, you can't see and you're a woman," Mrs. Clinton said she was told, adding that the recruiter dismissed her by suggesting she try the Army. "Maybe the dogs would take you," she recalled the recruiter saying.
My first thoughts after reading her words from 1975 was boy do I wish we could find that recruiter now. We should give him a medal. But like 99% of our readers, we recognized quickly that Hillary back then did what she still does best now - she prevaricates (or as we taught our children - she lies!). Even in 1975, the press documented that the First Lady's words were in fact incredulous:
The First Lady's cascading, contradictory images have been the subject of much commentary. . . . "We sense that we aren't seeing the 'real' Hillary, and this makes us very nervous." But, even given the fact that the nation has become accustomed to Mrs. Clinton's intriguing shape-shifting -- from liberal do-gooder to high-risk commodities trader, from power lawyer to cookie baker, from health care czar to housewife supervising the menu for the state dinner for the Emperor and Empress of Japan -- the latest one is still jarring. Macho Contrast to Clinton. . .

And it did not seem to fit in with the First Lady's own persona. After all, Hillary Rodham was an up-and-coming legal star involved with an up-and-coming political star. She had made a celebrated appearance in Life magazine as an anti-establishment commencement speaker at Wellesley College, where, as president of the student government, she had organized teach-ins on her opposition to the Vietnam War. She was a Yale law school graduate who had worked on the anti-war Presidential campaigns of Eugene J. McCarthy and George McGovern.

Mrs. Clinton told friends that she had moved to Arkansas for only one reason: to be with Bill Clinton. . . . She and Mr. Clinton married on Oct. 11, 1975 in Fayetteville. So, if she was talking to a Marine recruiter in 1975 before the marriage, was she briefly considering joining the few, the proud and the brave of the corps as an alternative to life with Mr. Clinton, who was already being widely touted as a sure thing for Arkansas Attorney General? . . .

Huckabee told to quit playing Boston song

Thanks!MSNBC: In a letter to the Republican presidential hopeful, Tom Scholz complains that Huckabee is using his 1970s smash hit song “More Than a Feeling” without his permission. A former member of the band, Barry Goudreau, has appeared with Huckabee at campaign events, and they have played the song with Huckabee’s band, Capitol Offense. Scholz, who said Goudreau left the band more than 25 years ago after a three-year stint, objects to the implication that the band and one of its members has endorsed Huckabee’s candidacy.
“Boston has never endorsed a political candidate, and with all due respect, would not start by endorsing a candidate who is the polar opposite of most everything Boston stands for,” wrote Scholz, adding that he is supporting Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. “By using my song, and my band’s name Boston, you have taken something of mine and used it to promote ideas to which I am opposed. In other words, I think I’ve been ripped off, dude!” . . . [Read More]

NRCC & RNC Fundraising has increase

by Ed Sistrunk, Grassroots Conservative Forum (GCF): The National Republican Congressional Committee narrowly outraised its House Democratic counterpart in January, ending a lengthy trend of losing the monthly money battles against the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. In FEC reports filed last night, the NRCC reported raising $3.79 million in January, compared to the DCCC’s $3.72 million. The NRCC still badly trails the DCCC in cash on hand, banking just $6.4 million to the DCCC’s $35.4 million. The NRCC has also paid off a small part of its existing debt, which now stands at $2.3 million. On the Senate side, Democrats continue to hold a narrow fundraising advantage for the month. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised $3.9 million in January, ending the month with $30.5 million on hand. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, meanwhile, raised $3.5 million and banked $13.2 million.

The Republican National Committee's had solid fundraising numbers for the month of January. The RNC has been the only GOP campaign committee to consistently outraise its Democratic counterpart, raising $11.6 million in January to the Democratic National Committee's $5.7 million. For the cycle, the RNC has significantly outraised the DNC, $95 million to $56 million.

Barack Obama and Us Ordinary People

by Bob Parks, Outside the Wire: Words mean things. On one hand, they can be meaningless. Their use can be a coincidence. They can be taken out of context. They can be unintentional. Or they can be an example of how someone thinks. This may be coincidence, but it may also be an indication of what Barack Obama thinks of the America he may inherit to lead. After last Tuesday night’s primary victories, he was talking to thousands at a rally in Houston. Near the close, he said:
“I was convinced, most of all, that change in America does not happen from the top down. It happens from the bottom up. Some of you know I used to work as a community organizer with churches on the south side of Chicago after the steel plants had laid thousands of people off. And we brought together black and white and Hispanic to try to create job-training programs for the unemployed and bring economic development to neighborhoods that had fallen on hard times.

And it was the best education I ever had, because it taught me that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they're given an opportunity.” – 2/19/08
Who are “ordinary people”? I know what he means, but especially when you’re running for the job with the most clout in the world, one must be very careful about the words you use. . . .

Whether it being all the offers of free this, or subsidized that, or promises he may or may not be able to keep once he has a friendly or hostile congress to deal with, Barack Obama is displaying a certain arrogance to the “ordinary people” he may have to lead. If this is what he thinks of us now, imaging what he’ll think of us should he move into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? . . . [Read More]

Times Executes A Well-Timed Ambush

by Michael Reagan, GOPUSA: If John McCain weren't such a trusting soul he would have wondered why The New York Times endorsed him -- a member of the hated Republican Party -- as their (slightly) preferred candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, especially when he knew they were preparing a slanderous, largely anonymously sourced, story bound to damage his candidacy and his reputation. The very wording of their endorsement should have been sufficient warning that eventually they'd be out to get him. He was merely the lesser of several evils facing GOP primary voters and they had at hand a weapon they believed they could use to scuttle his candidacy once he had snared the nomination and thus prevent a hated conservative from winning. . . .

Senator McCain, fully aware of the story the Times was holding in their arsenal of sleaze, should have instantly rejected their endorsement as being akin to an endorsement by the likes of Osama bin Laden or the Boston Strangler. He didn't then, but now that the Times' trap has sprung he should avoid having anything to do with The New York Times or any of it reporters, editors, employees or advertisers in recognition of the fact that the newspaper is toxic and dangerous to his health and the health and welfare of the American people.

He should refuse all of their requests for interviews, and make the Times and its minions persona non grata for the duration of the campaign and forever thereafter. And he should urge all of his fellow Republican office holders to do the same. Who needs the Times, especially since we already have al Jazeera? Time after time, The New York Times has shown itself to be the Typhoid Mary of American journalism, and as such should be quarantined to prevent its viruses from further infecting our body politic and endangering both our national security and the safety of the American people. . . . Court clears roofer who protested ‘illegals’

As reported on the Political Pistachio Radio: Terry Funderburk appeared Thursday evening on the Political Pistacio Radio program. Funderburk, 52, who calls himself "The Lone Protester" and was featured on a national TV news program, was arrested July 16 in an affluent Columbia subdivision after police said he caused a disturbance while protesting illegal alien workers installing copper roofing on a home. Funderburk believed the workers were illegal immigrants because he said they looked Hispanic. He had bid to work on the home, but the owner chose another roofer.

Funderburk asked for a jury trial, saying he had not violated any laws during the protest. Funderburk said he had refused plea bargains because he believed he had not committed a crime. He was found not guilty of disorderly-conduct charges Wednesday in Columbia Municipal Court. “I’ve been vindicated,” he said Wednesday after the trial.

Funderburk gained national attention in August when CNN’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” featured Funderburk’s story. He has appeared on many radio shows and has published a story about his "victory" website at The Lone Protester.

Now Raúl the Terrible Runs Cuba

Castro's Orphans - Americas columnist Mary Anastasia O'Grady talks with Carlos Eire, a Yale professor and author of "Waiting for Snow in Havana," about a Cuban tragedy from the 1960s.
- - - - - - - -
ARRA Editor: Just because Castro has stepped down and given his office to his brother, Raúl Castro, does not mean that things will be better in Cuba for children or their families.
Jennifer O'Shea reports: Raúl acted as an executioner during the revolution as well as after his brother took power. He was known for his ruthlessness and brutality. Years later, he suggested that his nickname should be "Raúl the Terrible" for his role in hundreds of killings. He even executed a close friend, Gen. Arnaldo Ochoa, on orders from Fidel in 1989. Raúl was his brother's designated successor for 47 years. He headed the Cuban military during that time, becoming the longest-serving defense minister in the world. He was also vice president of the Council of State and second secretary of the Cuban Communist Party. Raúl Castro worked closely with the Soviet Union during the first decades of his career. Without Fidel's knowledge, Raúl made Cuba's first official contact with that nation in 1959. He also negotiated with the Soviets to place missiles on the island, which led to military conflict with the United States and the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 . . . [Read More]

Hutchinson Family Politics Reflects Arkansas GOP

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Consensus within Republican Party in Arkansas (RPA) reflects a wide range of individuality. Republican opinions vary and this is no less true within families when it comes to 2008 GOP presidential contenders. Today's THV reported:
Supporting Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign is no longer a family affair for the Hutchinson clan. Former congressman Asa Hutchinson said Thursday he's no longer backing Huckabee's presidential campaign and he endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain. Hutchinson's brother, former U.S. Senator Tim Hutchinson, is a top Huckabee supporter.

The Hutchinson family has had split loyalties in the presidential race. Tim Hutchinson has been one of Huckabee's most outspoken supporters, while his ex-wife, state Representative Donna Hutchinson, campaigned for rival Mitt Romney while Romney was still in the race. Tim Hutchinson's son, Jeremy, had backed Fred Thompson's unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination before the Tennessee senator dropped out of the race. Asa Hutchinson says, "I would say that the discussions at Hutchinson family events are always interesting."
If several candidates had not withdrawn before the Arkansas preferential presidential primary, the differences in opinions would have been even broader. There are many factors for the variation in choices of candidates that Arkansas Republicans (including family members) have supported and will be supporting in the nomination process:
  • Republicans would have voted and suppored a number of candidates had they not withdrawn.
  • The RPA is not the majority party even though the GOP's principles are those of Dixie Democrats who now fear their party's slide into liberalism. Many Democrats have become Independents. The increased number of voters in Arkansas "open" Republican presidential primary indicates that Democrats and Independents crossed over to vote for a Republican candidate.
  • Many who have joined the RPA are Republican in Name Only (RINO) – not conservatives.
  • Many Arkansas Republicans do not align with ALL three conservative wings in the Republican party: social conservatives, economic conservatives and national security conservatives.
While other Southern states have recognized the Democrat Party's liberal, anti-traditional family values messages, Arkansas still remains a Democrat dominated state. One reason may be the liberal Clinton connection. Another reason may be the influence of funds funneled to Arkansas Democrats from the DNC and liberal sources. Regardless, in Arkansas, Republicans have worked hard to be represented as a political party. When the GOP presidential candidate is determined, Arkansas Republicans will work for and vote for the GOP nominee. They understand that NOT voting would be the same as voting for the Democrat Party's socialist choice for president. They know they will NOT be better off under Obama or Clinton. They will vote Republican!

Rep. Marion Berry Voted Against Economic Stimulus

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Rep. Marion Berry (D-AR) voted against the Economic Stimulus package and his reasons are incredulous. Remember Marion Berry is the king of legal personal pork. He has coordinated and received millions of dollars in federal farm subsidies for himself, family and friends. All these dollars have added to the National debt. But, Berry saw no problems when it was for his personal gain.

Now that the bipartisan effort in the US House and Senate passed an economic stimulus package to refund money to taxpaying citizens and others, Marion Berry objected. KAIT reported that:
Arkansas congressman Marion Berry voted against the economic stimulus bill that recently passed both the House, the Senate and the White House and he says he did it because of where the money is coming from and who gets left out.

Berry says those on social security and disabled veterans were left out of the original plan but even the revised version doesn't cut it for him. He says even though those on social security and disabled veterans are getting half of the standard amount, it still isn't good enough.

Another big reason cited as to why Congressman Berry voted nay is where the money is coming from. He says he voted "no" also because the money is borrowed. The package will issue $180 billion dollars in refunds to taxpayers this spring. The government is encouraging individuals to "spend" rather than "save" in order to help stimulate business.
We believe Rep Berry "doest protest to much." He doesn't mind it when the money goes in his pocket or at least into the pocket of his key supporters but he objects to his constituents receiving refunds. The bill passed the US House by a vote of 380-34. All of the rest of the Arkansas delegation voted for the bill. Marion Berry was one of only 6 Democrats voting against the bill in the US House. Berry has never been a real supporter of the "little guy" even though he has pulled the "wool over the eyes" of the voters while chuckling all the way to his personal bank accounts. He is a would be plantation master forced to accommodate and tolerate the voter to achieve his ends. We can only hope that someday soon his days in Congress and fleecing the public will finally end.

NY Times Smears McCain

by Gary Bauer, Campaign for Working Families: The New York Times ran a front page hit piece on Senator McCain today that reached new lows for "yellow journalism." The article, written by five - count them, five - Times reporters used innuendo and gossip to hint at an inappropriate relationship between Senator McCain and a female lobbyist. Senator McCain and his wife, Cindy, held a press conference at 9:00 AM this morning to confront the charges directly. He flatly denied their accuracy and both expressed their extreme disappointment that the New York Times had engaged in such a baseless smear.

Here are some additional points to consider: This is not new "news." The Times has dredged up old stories from eight years ago that it chose not to report then. Why are they suddenly relevant today? Because John McCain will be the Republican nominee, and they are trying to destroy him. Moreover, Senator McCain's staff provided numerous examples of votes he cast against this particular lobbyist's interests, which strongly suggests he was not being unduly influenced. The Times did not include any of those examples in the report, which strongly suggests that the Times was not being "fair and balanced" in its reporting.

Unfortunately, there is something else at work here. This is now the predictable reaction by liberal Big Media to any Republican presidential candidate. In 2000, they dug up a decades-old DUI charge against then- Governor George W. Bush that almost cost him the election. In 2004, CBS and Dan Rather tried to take down Bush again by basing a story on what turned out to be a fake memo suggesting the president had gotten special treatment to avoid the draft. The target is always the same - conservative candidates - and the goal is always the same - to suppress voter turnout among people like us who care about character and moral issues.

Meanwhile, liberal favorites, like Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, get a free ride. I could cite three "scandals" about Obama right now that the media are virtually ignoring. No doubt the New York Times is just too busy digging up dirt on Republicans to investigate anyone else. I believe this smear against McCain will backfire, just as similar smears against other conservative candidates have. But don't miss the main point: The political Left and its allies know they must stop McCain at all costs if they are going to reach their goal of controlling Congress, the White House and our courts, and turn our country sharply to the left. They want to see the United States in retreat; they want the courts ordering same-sex "marriage"; they want socialized medicine; they want to preserve abortion-on-demand; they want higher taxes and bigger government; and they will do whatever they have to do in order to destroy conservatives. Today's New York Times hatchet job is just a taste of what we can expect in the days ahead.

But the Times may have another motive too: It is diverting the public's attention from the very real divisions confronting Democrats. As Obama's insurgent campaign builds momentum, the Clinton machine is getting increasingly desperate, and Democrat elites are getting increasingly nervous. In recent days, one top Clinton campaign advisor said that Obama's primary victories are "irrelevant," and he arrogantly predicted that Hillary would win the nomination with the support of "super delegates" at the convention. Another Clinton strategist essentially said that Hillary is now prepared to go negative and knock Barack down for his inexperience and the obvious fact that he is not qualified to be commander-in-chief. Knowing that Hillary still has a few cards up her sleeve, Al Sharpton is making demands of Howard Dean and the Democrat National Committee to not seat delegates from Florida and Michigan, while Jesse Jackson is warning both Clinton and Obama not to "hurt themselves substantially, perhaps irreparably."

Here's a final point to ponder about the timing of this story: Perhaps the New York Times is panicking, too. A national poll released yesterday by Rasmussen Reports showed that John McCain is beating Senator Hillary Clinton 47%-to-43%, and he is only a few points behind Senator Obama, even though the media is "All Obama all the time!" Nuclear Family Hardly Down for the Count, Says Census

by Tony Perkins,Frc Wahington Update: Those who are quick to say that the traditional family is nearing extinction would be wise to check out the latest report from the Census Bureau. According to the most recent data, a majority of American children (70%) live in two-parent homes and the vast majority (90%) of those live with both of their biological parents. This means that of all American children, 63% are living with both their biological parents (60% married biological parents, 3% cohabiting biological parents). The other bit of good news is that the intact married family is getting stronger among Asian-Americans, where the proportion increased significantly between 2001 and 2004, from 76.4% to 80.5%--making the strongest family ethnic group even stronger yet. The rest of the news is not as optimistic. For all American children in all ethnic groups, there has been a slight decrease (1.4%) between 2001 and 2004 in the proportion living in the married, intact family. White American children are the second strongest group, after Asian-Americans, with 65.9% (down from 67.1%) living with their married, biological parents. Hispanics are next at 57.1 % (down from 58.2%) and African Americans last at 28.2 % (down from 29%). The data come from the SIPP (Survey of Income and Program Participation), a very detailed report produced periodically by the U.S. Census Agency. Secure America Act is Needed to Thwart Terrorist Attacks!

Jeff Mazzella, President, The Center for Individual Freedom: Pelosi and the Democratic leadership blocked a vote on the Protect America Act knowing full well that since 9/11, our intelligence agencies have used these tools to thwart major plots to commit unspeakable atrocities:
  • In mid-2002, U.S. agents uncovered a plot to hit targets on the East Coast. The plotters intended to use hijacked airplanes. By the way, one of the plotters of this caper was also involved in planning 9/11.
  • In May of 2002, our intelligence network busted a plot to bomb U.S. apartment buildings.
One of the plotters, Jose Padilla, planned to explode a "dirty bomb" inside the U.S. A dirty bomb is filled with conventional explosives and radioactive materials.
  • Padilla was recently found guilty of Conspiracy to Murder, Kidnap, and Maim Persons in a Foreign Country and Conspiracy to Provide Material Support for Terrorists.
  • Intelligence agencies -- with the help of telephone companies -- intercepted 70 calls by Padilla and his cohorts to their handlers. Enough said!
In 2006, U.S. and international authorities foiled a plot hatched by eight terrorists to blow up a commuter train tunnel connecting New Jersey and Manhattan. According to CNN:
  • "[L]aw enforcement sources said the suspects wanted to cross the Canadian border into the United States."
  • "Once in New York City, they would board trains with backpacks full of explosives, which they planned to detonate when the trains passed through a tunnel under the Hudson River."
In addition to these plots to attack us on our home soil, the U.S. helped to uncover and thwart a number of major plots throughout the world. For example:
  • A 2003 plot to attack London's Heathrow Airport, using hijacked airliners.
  • At least two plots in 2004 to blow up targets in Britain -- strategies designed specifically to kill civilians.
  • At least two plots to attack ships in the Arabian Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz.
Much of that information was obtained through the surveillance capabilities of our nation's intelligence community. And what U.S. and British intelligence agencies did, PELOSI IS NOW PREVENTING -- simply by walking away from HER responsibility. Let's make sure she stops playing petty politics and brings the Protect America Act to the floor first thing when Congress comes back into session! Contact your representatives!

Schools Accommodate Muslim Students

Education Reporter: Public universities across the nation are making unprecedented efforts to accommodate Muslim students, provoking round after round of debate over the role of religion in public life and the point at which accommodation becomes an unconstitutional establishment of religion. It is clearly constitutional to set aside a room on campus for students of any faith to use for prayer; but what about accommodations that meet the needs of only one religious group? The mere fact of a religious basis for a request does not mean universities should refuse the request. But unequal treatment of various religious groups does present a problem if it occurs at public institutions.

The Muslim Students Association (MSA), a national group, has formed a Muslim Accommodations Task Force (MATF) that now leads efforts to bring foot baths, halal food, and Muslim prayer rooms to schools everywhere. As of the summer of 2007, MSA announced that at least nine universities had set aside prayer rooms for Muslims only. At least 17 universities had installed footbaths for their Muslim students or were in the process of doing so. . . .

At Normandale Community College, a public institution in Bloomington, Minnesota . . . a meditation room on campus has become a Muslim-only prayer room with a number of features that make students of other faiths unwelcome. A sign posted at the entrance asks visitors to remove their shoes. Another sign lists the schedule for Islam's five daily prayers, and an arrow inside the room points in the direction of Mecca. Most noticeably, a chest-high barrier partitions the room to separate men and women during prayer. The college building crew erected this barrier, and college officials placed the signs asking students to enter barefoot — "basically a courtesy to Muslim students," says Dean of Student Affairs Ralph Anderson.

On the side of the barrier intended for women, there is a pile of shawls and head-coverings, or hijaab. A pamphlet entitled "Hijaab and Modesty" instructs women on proper attire and comportment according to Islam. Women should stay at home, according to the pamphlet, and their speech must not "be such that it is heard." The same pamphlet speaks disparagingly of Christians and Jews, "the enemies of Allah's religion. . . . Remember that you will never succeed while you follow these people." "For all practical purposes, this meditation room is essentially a Muslim prayer room," Normandale history professor Chuck Chalberg told Kersten. "Something this unprecedented goes beyond religious toleration." . . . [Read More]

John Murtha Porker of the Year (2007)

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) today announced the final results of its online poll for the 2007 Porker of the Year. Rep. John “Jack” Murtha (D-PA) won in a landslide victory, receiving 63.4% of the vote. A distant second, Rep. Don Young (R-AK) received 10.6%, while Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) came in with 9.9 percent, Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) had 6.7%, and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Rep. James Oberstar (D-MN) both finished up with 4.1%. The finalists were chosen by CAGW staff from among the 12 Porker of the Month winners for 2007.

Rep. Jack Murtha has long been known inside the Beltway for using threats, power plays, and backroom deals to control spending decisions. There is an area of the House floor known as “Murtha’s Corner,” where the legendary appropriator dispenses earmarks. The overwhelming vote for Porker of the Year vote shows that his shameful behavior is attracting attention throughout the country. The congressman inserts pork whenever he can to serve himself and his district. In fiscal year 2008, he brought home 72 pork projects worth $149.2 million. . . . [Read More]

Supremacist Judges Attack Our Military

by Phyllis Schlafly, Eagle Forum: Two separate federal courts, one in San Francisco and the other in Los Angeles, just ordered the United States Navy to limit its use of sonar, the underwater radar essential for tracking enemy submarines and detecting the ocean floor. These rulings tie the hands of our Navy and are the latest outrage committed by judicial supremacists. The lawsuits were brought by environmental groups on behalf of whales and other sea creatures, using the claim that their ears and brains might be damaged by the sonar. The court rulings allow environmentalism to trump what the Navy needs to do to protect our national interest.

These February rulings followed an anti-military ruling last November by the Ninth Circuit, which invited injunctions against the Navy to restrict its use of sonar. In NRDC v. Winter, the Ninth Circuit held that an "injunction would be appropriate" against the Navy to restrict its use of sonar. The Navy says it already minimizes risks to marine life and has used sonar for decades without seeing any injuries to whales. . . . So, chalk up another victory for enemies of our armed forces, internal and external. It seems that the anti-military leftists have picked up judicial activists as their allies.

Why should our Navy have to grovel to federal judges for permission to defend U.S. national security? Most of our Navy's activities are not even in the United States, and judges should not have the power to interfere with the Navy's protection of our national interests. . . . Judges in black robes should not be telling our generals and admirals what they cannot do, and federal courts should not be interfering with the Navy's duty to patrol the oceans. The Constitution did not make the federal judiciary our Commander in Chief. Environmentalists have no compunction about filing lawsuits to protect animals at the expense of national security. . .

Unaccountable federal judges should not be giving orders to the United States Navy as it tries to defend our freedoms. . . . It's time for Congress to assume responsibility to protect our national security by stripping the federal courts from jurisdiction over the U.S. Navy. . . . [Read More]

Keeping Arkansas’ Economy Strong: Why Should We Care?

by Rep. Aaron Burkes, Arkansas Republican Caucus: Arkansas continues to maintain a strong and thriving economy during a time when many states are struggling with budgetary deficits and faltering economies. So why then should Arkansans be concerned about a tax increase when our state is fiscally strong and enjoying a time of economic growth? It is human nature to become complacent in times of excess but in reality that is exactly the time we as involved citizens should become informed and proactive; ensuring continuance of the infrastructure that is providing sound support for our vital economy. This is the time for us as concerned citizens to make critical decisions impacting the future of Arkansas’ economy for years to come. Sound decisions sending the right message to those impacted most!

What are these critical decisions? Arkansas’ economy is strong in large part due to the energy industry. According to a study conducted by the Center for Business and Economic Research in the Sam W. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Shale is estimated to create almost 10,000 full-time jobs and generate $357.7 million in state and local tax revenues. Additionally, the study estimates direct expenditures of $3.8 billion from land and mineral leasing rights, drilling and other related activities during 2005-2008. Fayetteville Shale’s investment in our state presents an “economic jackpot” of new jobs for Arkansans. Their investment is equivalent to the economic impact of three to four automobile plants in our state.

Why then would Arkansans want to support raising a tax that would discourage economic investment in our state? Why would Arkansans not want to keep Arkansas strong? A vote to raise the severance tax is a vote that sends the wrong message! Raising the severance tax is a vote for higher energy bills. Energy companies will simply counterbalance their additional deficit, created by the increased tax, by passing along their costs to working families already struggling with through-the-roof fuel bills and increasing food costs. Therefore, a vote to raise the severance tax is a vote to decrease expendable income for working families; working families already living paycheck to paycheck.

Raising the severance tax would make any industry interested in Arkansas think twice about making a commitment requiring large investments of time and money in our state if only to increase taxes on them once they’re established. Why should we as Arkansans give incentives to a windmill plant that is projected to produce nominal amounts in future investments compared to an established industry that is already producing billons in investments today?

Why should Arkansans care? Less industry investments means fewer jobs and lower productivity for our state. If Fayetteville Shale is taxed today then who will be taxed tomorrow? Farmers and agriculture? Small businesses? The trucking industry? Or perhaps homeowners? Another income tax surcharge may be just around the corner.

Arkansas’ current strong economy and fiscal surplus were created by the citizens of our state through hard work and ingenuity. Aren’t we as Arkansans already working hard enough to make Arkansas strong? Why then should our government ask us for more? The first issue of Talk Business quarterly featured a survey of 608 registered Arkansas voters polled by Global Strategy Group of Arkansas. This survey reported 66% of the people in our state believed state leaders could be doing more to encourage new jobs and businesses in their area.

Why aren’t we as state leaders listening to the people of our state? We, as state leaders, should be supporting the businesses and entrepreneurs who are creating new jobs in our state and requiring far more from our government in helping to keep our economy and state strong. As state leaders, we need to be providing leadership that is concerned and informed; making decisions for the good of all Arkansans.

Michelle Obama Unplugged

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Although we posted yesterday Michelle Obama and America by Gary Bauer, we just couldn't let the story pass without offering readers the insightful views by Bob Parks on the would be potential first lady of the United States. Bob Parks is one of our favorite writers because of his conservative, balanced and tounge-in-cheek articles. Bob is our co-laborer for Reagan style conservative ideals and for today's unique perspective, a black American. He addresses Michelle Obama statements in a manner that we should all be able to freely address without reverse labeling and criticism by the very liberals who's favors Michelle Obama solicites but at the same time appears to resent.

by Bob Parks, Outside the Wire: I must admit, up until yesterday most of us were hoping the Republican nominee for president would go up against Hillary Clinton. She has the obvious negatives and would be a statue of a sparring partner for her GOP opponent to beat up on. The Barack Obama tidal wave was, and still is, a disciplined, Pied Piper-like phenomenon that enjoys the love and admiration of his supporters and media alike. As I said, that is, until yesterday.

Remember the damage an unleashed Teresa Heinz Kerry did to her husband’s campaign. Yesterday, Michelle Obama may have started down that same road, and did so sober. In front of 600 or so adoring supporters at the Capitol Theater in Madison, Michelle Obama said:
“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction. And just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic, common issues and it's made me proud.”
Because of the delicate elements involved, the press has been asking what she meant more than why she meant it. It’s obvious she’s caught up in the historical nature of her husband’s candidacy, as many Blacks and/or liberals felt they’d never see this day in “racist America”. Judging from the history of the Democrat Party, I don’t blame them, but I’ll not get off topic at this time.

This has got to be one of those “one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind” moments. Speaking of Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, Michelle Obama would have been around five years old when we landed on the moon. “We” meaning America. She may not have been old enough to be proud of America back then, but she had to have thought that was kind of cool.

Michelle Obama was gushed over by the media, that is, until yesterday. Now she’s struck a nerve with many Americans, and the collective judgment, like it or not, may be a little more unforgiving. As she’s too proud to clarify her statement, some of us will try to explain it. While most in the mainstream media are pussyfooting around the subject, Michelle’s lack of pride in America comes down to race. In the introduction to her 1985 senior thesis “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community”, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson [Obama] wrote:
“My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my ‘Blackness’ than ever before. I have found that at Princeton no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my White professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don’t belong.”
Did she get into Princeton based on her previous academic achievement or did she fulfill a quota? Affirmative Action does breed resentment and alienation. She concluded:
“I wondered whether or not my education at Princeton would affect my identification with the Black community. I hoped that these findings would help me conclude that despite the high degree of identification with Whites as a result of the educational and occupational path that Black Princeton alumni follow, the alumni would still maintain a certain level of identification with the black community. However, these findings do not support this possibility.”
Funny how it was the white liberals who she said made her feel as if she “didn’t belong.” It must eat her up inside that Barack has to suck up to so many of those same white liberals to win the nomination. By the way, the Princeton Library will not make her thesis public until November 5, 2008: the day after the general election.

Timing is everything. Michelle Obama later earned a paltry $320,000 a year as a "Community Affairs" director for the University of Chicago Hospitals, and currently lives in a $1.6 million home in Chicago. While a hospital director, she was also named to the corporate board of TreeHouse Foods, a Wal-Mart supplier. That $51,200-a-year gig began in 2005; the year Barack entered the United States Senate. Was she qualified for that board seat? Obviously, that doesn’t matter now. She resigned from that board in 2006 when Barack joined in on the trendy liberal trashing of Wal-Mart. Very few of us could just up and leave a supplementary income $50k-a-year job because of political differences with a spouse. Isn’t that a reason to be a proud American?

At the risk of sounding sappy, I say the following from experience. Most people in America know little about being truly “disenfranchised”. Most people in America know little about being truly “downtrodden”. Most Americans have never left our borders and visited the Third World and experienced real poverty, real hopelessness, real despair, and true futility. Of all the nations in the world to be born in, the United States of America is hands down, the best place for ANYONE to be. Michelle Obama need get out more. Maybe then she’d be a little more proud to be an American.

Because of her educational opportunities, being fortunate enough to not only marry one of the statistically few Black men who not only stuck around and is efficiently sprinting up the political ladder, Michelle Obama is living a life few in this country can even imagine. America is why she is where she is today. She doesn’t have to publicly thank anyone, or show that patriotic pride. Michelle Obama, like her husband, doesn’t have to wear an American flag pin or put her hand on her heart during the Pledge. But to not be proud of an America that has allowed her to walk where she’s walking now is just plain selfish. No apologies sought here, Michelle. I doubt it would be sincere. We know whom we’re dealing with, and we’re learning more every day.

Boozman Named Ranking member of Water Resources & Environment Subcommittee

Boozman Blog: Rep. John Boozman replaces former Congressman Richard Baker as the top Republican of the Subcommittee with jurisdiction over water resources development, conservation and management, water pollution control, water infrastructure, and hazardous waste cleanup. Federal agencies under the Subcommittee’s jurisdiction include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Representative Boozman is a dedicated and hard-working Member of Congress with an excellent command of the critical issues before this subcommittee,” Mica said. “With his legislative experience and knowledge of the issues, John is the perfect choice to lead Subcommittee Republicans in their work to address the nation’s growing need for water infrastructure, port and waterway improvements, flood control projects and environmental stewardship.” “I want to thank Congressman Mica for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to working with Congresswoman Johnson,” Boozman said.

Boozman has represented the 3rd Congressional District of Arkansas since 2001, and has served on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee since first being elected. Boozman is also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, having served as that panel’s Economic Opportunity Subcommittee Ranking Member. Boozman is an Assistant Whip for House Republicans, and serves on the House Policy Committee.

Democrats Allow FISA to Expire -- Pelosi's Shameful Pandering

Republican Party of Arkansas: Last week, Democratic members of Arkansas' Congressional Delegation joined in lockstep with their liberal leadership and left Washington without renewing the Protect America Act, which expired at midnight on Saturday. This important national security legislation gave our intelligence professionals the tools they needed to monitor threats to America's security, specifically terrorists' communicating and plotting abroad. The Senate was able to reach a bipartisan agreement, the President said he was willing to postpone his trip to Africa, and yet Democrats in the House . . . thought it was more important to go on vacation than to renew the Protect America Act. These Democrats claim to be representing the people of Arkansas, yet they continually vote with the left wing of their party.

The Congressional Democrats' inaction leaves the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence unable to authorize new certifications against foreign intelligence targets, including international terrorists, abroad. Private companies assisting the United States in the surveillance of terrorists will now be exposed to legal liability, and our intelligence community will be stripped of the power to compel the assistance of private companies that are not already helping monitor terrorist communications. It is time for Congressmen Snyder, Berry, and Ross to reject the political games being played by the Democratic leadership and their candidates for President. Some things are more important than politics. I call on Arkansas Democrats to do the right thing and give our intelligence community the tools they need to keep our nation safe.

See also: Pelosi's shameful pandering: "21 relatively moderate Blue Dog Democrats led by Rep. Mike Ross of Arkansas have signed a letter to Mrs. Pelosi urging her to yield on FISA, the speaker realized that she was in danger of suffering yet another humiliating political defeat on the issue. So she pulled the bill from the floor and sent the House on vacation. . . . The most critical question now is whether Mr. Ross and his fellow Blue Dogs can somehow persuade Mrs. Pelosi that pandering to the kook fringe on national security will damage her politically."

    Michelle Obama And America

by Gary Bauer, Campaign for Working Families: Michelle Obama, wife of Democrat frontrunner Barack Obama, shocked a lot of people over the weekend when she said this: "For the first time in my adult lifetime I am proud of my country." Wow! That takes my breath away. Mrs. Obama is 44 years old, so for over roughly 24 years of "adulthood," taking her at her word, she has never been proud of our nation. Is there a theme here? You may remember that last year Senator Obama said he refused to wear a flag lapel pin because it represented a "substitute for true patriotism." And what precisely is true patriotism? According to Senator Barack Hussein Obama, it is opposing the war in Iraq.

Apparently nothing America did from 1982 to 2008 caused her heart to swell with pride. Not our successful effort to defeat Soviet communism and liberate millions of people in Eastern Europe? Not our relief efforts around the world, through which we spent billions to help the downtrodden? Not anything? When she learned with all the rest of us how her fellow citizens on United Flight 93 bravely fought back against jihadist hijackers and prevented another disaster on September 11th, did she not fill up with pride? As Americans of all races and classes rallied together in defense of our nation in the aftermath of September 11th, did her spirit not jump with love for her homeland? Apparently not.

The Obamas are living examples of the American Dream. Both Michelle Obama and her husband have Ivy League degrees. They make a joint income of over one million dollars a year. They live lives that most ordinary Americans can only dream of. Yet, Mrs. Obama, who wants to be first lady, has been unable to find the pride in America that millions of ordinary Americans feel every day. Sadly, her attitude is not rare among leftwing American elites. We are "educating" millions of Americans to be globalists first and foremost, and we are doing precious little about educating our children to be proud and unashamed Americans. The Obamas are flying high politically right now, but I don't believe many Americans will want to cast their votes this November for a couple so out of touch with traditional American values. Persecution of Christians in China Increasing With Pending Olympic Games

Tony Perkins, Family Research Council: Within days of a key meeting between U.S. diplomats and China's head of religious affairs, China Aid released its annual report on the persecution of Christians in communist China. Both China Aid and the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China agree that the religious crackdown is becoming more pronounced in the months leading up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The cases of persecution against house churches are up more than 25 percent from 2006, and the number of individuals harassed or imprisoned grew from 665 to 788, including unprecedented antagonism against foreigners. Ambassador John Hanford has an opportunity to pressure Ye Xiaowen, head of China's State Administration for Religious Affairs, to release dozens of Christians and pastors still in government custody--including the many whose fate FRC has repeatedly called on the State Department to address. While Secretary Condoleezza Rice has refused to reply to our letter of December 11, we join 12 members of Congress in asking Hanford to express America's outrage at the routine discrimination against and persecution of Christians in China. Dangerous Delay in Background-Checking Legal Immigrants

by Paul M. Weyrich, Chair & CEO of the Free Congress Foundation: It seems that immigration, legal and illegal, is too numerically overwhelming for the Federal Government to handle properly. Yesterday in this column I praised the Department of Labor (DOL) and Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao for the decision to change the wage and visa application rules governing farm laborers in an attempt to reduce the demand for illegal immigrants. This was a positive step after the debacle last year of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, in which Americans were told that illegal immigrants live among us in the shadows and that the Federal Government has no way of knowing who they are. DOL’s proposed changes acknowledge that most of the agricultural workers in this country are illegal immigrants.

But how are Americans supposed to trust the Federal Government to enforce the border and deport those who arrive illegally when it is incapable of checking those who are here legally? This is an egregious problem, one highlighted earlier this month when President George W. Bush’s Administration announced that it will grant permanent residency status to tens of thousands of legal immigrants without first completing their required background checks against the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigative files because the backlog of legal immigration cases is too large and growing rapidly. The change in status will affect an unknown number of applicants whose cases otherwise are complete but whose FBI checks have been pending for more than six months. The backlog has left many legal immigrants in limbo. I applaud these immigrants for following the rules and applying to live here legally. They are not the problem; the Federal Government is.

Part of the problem is that the system of background checks is inefficient. The FBI stores more than 86 million investigative files which electronically complete the background checks for about 90% of legal immigrants within three months. The remaining 10% can take years to finish through paper-based searches for any mention of an applicant’s name in records stored in 265 locations across the country. What type of signal does this send to those who may be criminals in their home country or who seek to destroy America for ideological reasons? The signal is loud and clear: those with criminal records, including violent ones, or those who would mount terrorist attacks against us can beat the system because the Federal Government is too uncoordinated and lethargic to check their backgrounds. This is a serious threat to our national security, not because all these legal immigrants have criminal intentions but because it only requires a few to slip through to wreak havoc on our cities and country. The decision to grant permanent residency status to tens of thousands of legal immigrants without first completing their required background checks is a disservice to American citizens, as much as the lengthy wait period is for legal immigrants, many of whom may have jobs and families in limbo hinging on the outcome of their residency status. The Federal Government is failing both groups.

Congress has approved more money to speed the FBI name checks. Unfortunately, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency handling the background checks for permanent residency status, plans to use the increased funding to hire more FBI contractors. As has come to be expected from the Federal Government, this is an outdated way to handle the matter. What USCIS should do is mount an intensive campaign with the FBI to make all FBI files electronic, so that it will no longer require so much time and manpower to dig through paper files across the country. But such a common-sense idea rarely occurs to bureaucrats. The Federal Government needs to get a handle on immigration, both legal and illegal, and to do so soon. It has failed the American people on this issue more than any other and will continue to fail unless we demand an immediate overhaul of the current system. And that does not mean more bureaucracy.

    McCain Says No New Taxes

GOPUSA via AP: Republican John McCain says there will be no new taxes during his administration if he is elected president. "No new taxes,' the likely GOP presidential nominee said during a taped interview broadcast Sunday. McCain told ABC's "This Week" that under no circumstances would he increase taxes, and added that he could "see an argument, if our economy continues to deteriorate, for lower interest rates, lower tax rates, and certainly decreasing corporate tax rates," as well as giving people the ability to write off depreciation and eliminating the alternative minimum tax. . . . In election 2008, Don’t forget the Angry White Man

by Gary Hubbell, Aspen Times Weekly: There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.

Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.

There is one group no one has recognized, and it is the group that will decide the election: the Angry White Man. The Angry White Man comes from all economic backgrounds, from dirt-poor to filthy rich. He represents all geographic areas in America, from urban sophisticate to rural redneck, deep South to mountain West, left Coast to Eastern Seaboard. . . . [DONT MISS THIS ONE -- Read more]

    Voting McCain

    Radical liberalism will bring conservative
to their senses to vote for John McCain.

We all know about the dangers of Hillary Clinton. On the other hand, Barack Obama (the man for "change") is touted as a Constitution scholar. Image the damage he will do promoting the misinterpretation of the Bill of Rights and his placing judges in the Court system that will dismantle our Constitutional freedoms. Example: Obama has already sponsored the United Nations “Global Poverty Act" which commits nations to banning “small arms and light weapons” and ratifying a series of treaties, including the International Criminal Court Treaty, the Kyoto Protocol (global warming treaty), the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
