Gary Bauer Reponds to Mike Huckabee's Attacks

by Gary Bauer, Human Events: Ronald Reagan used to quip that the 11th Commandment is: Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican. While there are times for Republicans to call one another out for un-Republican behavior, such arguments are best kept inside the family and should not be aired openly to unsympathetic media. It is therefore unfortunate that, at a time when the GOP needs to close ranks and seek unity, Governor Mike Huckabee has aimed his fire at his fellow Republicans. In the just-released Do the Right Thing, which he has been promoting on news shows and in major newspapers, Governor Huckabee takes shots at several prominent Republicans, including his one-time rivals for the GOP presidential nomination Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

He also takes a couple shots at me, claiming I told him that the issues I have worked on most of my professional life -- the sanctity of human life, the preservation of marriage and family and religious freedom -- were no longer a focus of mine and that my focus has shifted to foreign policy matters. Gov. Huckabee writes of being puzzled about why I didn’t endorse his presidential candidacy, stating, “Gary Bauer reportedly wasn’t impressed at all and set forth from that day onward to find an ever-changing reason to deny me his support.”

Huckabee is wrong on a couple of counts. First, my passion and work on behalf of values issues have in no way diminished. Second, I have believed since 9-11 that the West’s battle against Islamofascism is a crucial component in the fight for our civilization. Thus it is a values issue. That Huckabee fails to understand all this gets to the heart of why I did not support him.

Huckabee said that during a private meeting we had, “it was like playing whack-a-mole at the arcade -- whatever issue I addressed, another one surfaced as the ‘problem’ that made my candidacy unacceptable.”In fact, talking with Huckabee was like playing whack-a-mole, because he had a number of issues that posed problems. It wasn’t just that he didn’t get it on foreign policy. His record on taxes and spending, illegal immigration, his apparent backing of Al Gore's carbon cap and trade scheme, support for voting rights for Washington, D.C., and cozying up to unions like the NEA all worried me. Huckabee can call it whack-a-mole. But for me there were just too many items where he wasn’t sufficiently conservative coupled with a lack of attention and experience on foreign affairs.

. . . Mike Huckabee has a bright future in public life (which is why I wanted him to run for Senate, where he would have added a needed voice of reason on values issues). After he is finished attacking all those who he thinks denied him the GOP nomination, I look forward to working with him to reform the GOP and revitalize the conservative movement. . . . Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) Nov. Porker of the Month

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) November Porker of the Month for remarks he made during a speech on October 27, 2008 in which he praised the idea of wealth redistribution and maligned the idea that people who create wealth should be entitled to keep it. Rep. Moran, who entered politics soon after graduate school, stated in part, “Now, in the last seven years, we have had the highest corporate profit ever in American history, highest corporate profit. We’ve had the highest productivity. The American worker has produced more per person than at any time. But it hasn’t been shared and that’s the problem. Because we have been guided by a Republican administration who believes in this simplistic notion that people who have wealth are entitled to keep it and they have an antipathy towards the means of redistributing wealth.” . . .

Detroit Blames Alabama's Worker-Choice Option

The Union News Editors: In Detroit yesterday, the leader of the union that helped drive the American automakers toward bankruptcy seemed to lay some of the blame for the Big Three's financial predicament on Alabama. Meanwhile, in Washington, the well-paid Detroit executives who accepted gold-plated union contracts proved they're as ineffective at lobbying as they are at managing auto companies. The CEOs of Chrysler, Ford and General Motors tried to persuade Congress to bail their companies' out of their financial woes. But instead of a handout from taxpayers, the executives received angry lectures from congressional leaders.

One of the union honchos who helped negotiate Detroit's demise lashed out at right-to-work states where foreign automakers have located assembly plants. United Auto Workers union President Ron Gettelfinger cited Alabama as a state that has provided incentives to attract foreign automakers. Mr. Gettelfinger equated these incentives with the proposed bailout for the Big Three, and implied that Alabama and other Southern states are subsidizing Detroit's competition.

Gov. Bob Riley must have chuckled when he responded to this nonsense. "With all due respect to Mr. Gettelfinger, great workers making great products is a proven recipe for success in Alabama — and it doesn't require a bailout," the governor said. Indeed, Hyundai, Mercedes, Toyota and Honda aren't asking for bailouts. They're manufacturing first-rate cars in Alabama and other states, and they're doing it with workers who receive about $25 per hour less in pay and benefits than UAW members.

Detroit is getting killed by that multi-billion-dollar union surcharge, not by the Southern states' success in attracting foreign automakers.

The Ad Nancy Pelosi Apparently Doesn't Want You To See

CBS Refuses to Air ‘Card Check’ Ad Targeting Dems Due to Pelosi Appearance. "Americans for Job Security attempted to advertise on the CBS Network but our advertisement titled 'Secret' was denied. It is one part of a serious and ongoing public policy debate on the Employee Free Choice Act. According to our media buyers, CBS officials cited the appearance of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom the advertisement shows in visual form only, as one of the primary reasons for the denial of the advertisement. One CBS representative felt that viewers would be 'confused' by its contents within their program. The advertisement was approved by other broadcast networks." But you can see the ad below:

Turkey Vultures Seen Leaving Washington D. C. - Nov 21, 2008

Couldn't resist the title for today's Washington update. When one of the most unpopular Congresses in U.S. history heads home for Thanksgiving, it is hard to wish them well. It seemed more appropriate to send out a warning that the Turkey Vultures, who try to pick our bones clean while they are in Washington D.C., are returning to their nesting grounds.

Congress is in recess but could return for a lame duck session beginning December 8th to consider a rescue package for auto companies. Yesterday, the Senate p by voice vote a bill to extend unemployment insurance (H.R. 6867) which was signed by the president later in the day.

As Congress leaves town for Thanksgiving, The Wall Street Journal has a couple of must-read pieces looking ahead to the 111th Congress:
  • First, Kimberley Strassel examines the challenges facing Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell in keeping Republicans together when faced with some of the more troubling legislative proposals that are likely to come from an Obama White House.

  • Next an Editorial discussing yesterday’s overthrow of House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell (D-MI) by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA): “John Dingell’s fall from power yesterday is an important inflection point in the history of the modern Democratic Party. The House purge marks the final triumph of the Congressional generation that came of political age during the 1970s over the last lion of New Deal liberalism, and it is symbolic of the party's change in culture and policy priorities in the Barack Obama era. . . . Mr. Waxman, speaking for the upscale precincts of Beverly Hills, wants to phase out coal and cars that use gasoline. The coastal elites who now dominate Democratic politics will happily trade the blue collar for the green collar.”

  • Democrats in Washington are clearly energized to make a renewed push on a number of bad bills that Republicans were able to stop over the last two years and are positioning their chess pieces to do so.

Arkansas - Missouri MOU May Take Away Your Rights!

ACT QUICKLY---TIME IS SHORT! It is difficult to play catch-up when Government officials operate off record, or with short public notices to the public, or outside of established constitutional guidelines. Complete and total transparency is a friend of the Citizen but seems to be avoided whenever possible by governing officials. There must be a human gene which turns on when a person is elected to office. A gene that causes elected officials to believe that they now know what's best for the people even when the majority of the people would not have agreed with them if full disclosure had been made. The gene's effects to intensify as a person is elected to "higher levels" of positions and authority. Dictatorial tendencies appear and we eventually notice (if we are watching) that they are limiting, taking or surrendering our personal and property rights. A current example requiring quick action is detailed below:

Secure Arkansas shares an immediate need for Citizen action: We as free people of the United States of America are having our civil liberties and rights constantly being attacked. This proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Watershed Pact identified below is one more way to take away our personal property rights and ability to use oversight on the various government agencies which this affects. Please consider making the phone call to the people and agencies listed below. It will make a difference and help out fellow PATRIOTS who are fighting along side you (just on different issues) to try to keep this STATE and all of the others FREE for us, our children, and future generations.

Request from a fellow Patriot Citizen: ****URGENT****
Three years ago, ANRC and ADEQ almost persuaded Gov. Huckabee to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (Watershed Pact) with the Missouri governor, which would have given undue power of bureaucratic agencies over the state legislature and county and municipal governments. Public pressure caused him to withdraw from signing.

Now, a surprise announcement in the ARK Dem/Gazette last week says that Gov. Beebe will be participating in a signing ceremony NEXT Monday morning, Nov 24 (10:30 a.m.) at Bass Pro in Springfield, Mo. for the same kind of watershed pact. (Their decision will be made TODAY, Nov. 21st!) TIME IS SHORT to accomplish the same persuasion to convince Gov. Beebe to refrain from signing. Immediately call the governor’s office: 501-682-2345 fax#: 501-682-1382 and insist that Gov. Beebe NOT sign the MOU with Missouri governor next Monday nor ever.

    Reason for Action:
    • “The proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Watershed Part is in violation of the Constitution because it provides the way for non-elected bureaucratic agencies to have authority over land and water resources without public input, and without accountability to our elected state and county officials.
    • IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO ERASE STATE AND COUNTY BOUNDARY LINES THEREBY ALLOWING FOR UNELECTED REGIONAL COUNCILS TO GOVERN US, RATHER THAN OUR CONSTITUTIONAL AND ELECTED LEADERS TO MAKE AND ENFORCE THE LAW.
    • It also usurps County Conservation District authority as provided by Act 197 of 1937.”
Call your State Legislators and Senators and County Judges requesting they contact the Governor with same message. ALSO contact your LOCAL AND STATE FARM BUREAU offices with same message insisting that they require the State Farm Bureau office to send an official message of opposition to the Governor because the MOU / Watershed Pact conflicts with Farm Bureau Policies, especially Policy #N-11. Farm Bureau State Office: 501-228-1280
    ACT QUICKLY---TIME IS SHORT!

Arizona Gov. Napolitano to head Homeland Security

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Is this is the best President-elect Obama can offer Americans for the protection of the U.S. from 1) attacks by terrorists, 2) protecting our borders, and 3) providing direction in the time of National Crisis? Considering Napolitano's strong support for the "amnesty" guest worker program, it will be interesting to see what NumbersUSA, Veterans for Secure Borders, Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, and others feel about her nomination.
POLITICO — "Arizona Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano has been chosen to serve as secretary of the vast and troubled Department of Homeland Security for President-elect Barack Obama, Democratic officials said Napolitano is a border governor who will now be responsible for immigration policy and border security, which are part of Homeland Security’s myriad functions. Napolitano brings law and order experience from her stint as the Grand Canyon State’s first female attorney general. ..." (more)

The Role Education Has Played In Bringing America Down

"Nobel Laureate winner Elie Wiesel: 'If to be free is the most important goal of all, then to help someone else to be or to become free must be the most sublime and rewarding of human endeavors.' That is not only a sublime and rewarding human endeavor, but also one of the most important obligations of citizenship in the greatest democracy in the history of the world."
By Herb Denenberg, The Bulletin: There is an ongoing epidemic in the land that may be more dangerous than any we've experienced before. It's not spread by bacteria or viruses, but can be fatal not simply to a person but to a nation. That epidemic is one of anti-Americanism or what might be called hate-Americanism. It is spread in many ways, including by politicians and a political party, by a president-elect and his associates, by the mainstream media and by colleges and universities. One of the most important ways it is spread is by the teaching of history in our colleges and universities, which is facilitated by historians and history textbooks that are profoundly anti-American. . . . Ford Motors Operates Efficient Plant in Brazil

This is a video of a new Ford plant in Brazil.
Quite fascinating 3.5 minute video of a Ford plant in Brazil shows why there are manufacturers wanting to leave USA, even in spite of a battle against Brazilian politicians' demagoguery before they allowed Ford build it there. Unions prevent this to happen in the USA and yet hope to compete with the robots the Japanese use.

Romney Advises "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt"

[The following opt ed appeared in The New York Times but has also been sent out via the Internet.] Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: On Reflection - The Republican Party had an opportunity to put forth Mitt Romney as its candidate. While National Security was in the forefront, the GOP passed over more qualified people able to address domestic affairs of our country. While many social conservatives did support Mitt Romney, there were outspoken social conservative leaders who influenced there followers to add to the Constitutional requirements: "No Mormons for President." To them, it did not matter that Romney was pro-life, understood the economy, business and global issues and threats, was able to organize and recruit top leadership, and proved he could turn a sows purse into a success (US Olympics). The consequence: the Republican Party put forth a candidate with less expertise to resolve the pending economic crisis. The result: a liberal administration prone to socialistic ideals will now address the economy and global affairs for the next 4 years.

By Mitt Romney: If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed. Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped to run American Motors when its president suddenly died. The company itself was on life support — banks were threatening to deal it a death blow. The stock collapsed. I watched Dad work to turn the company around — and years later at business school, they were still talking about it. From the lessons of that turnaround, and from my own experiences, I have several prescriptions for Detroit’s automakers.

First, their huge disadvantage in costs relative to foreign brands must be eliminated. That means new labor agreements to align pay and benefits to match those of workers at competitors like BMW, Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.

That extra burden is estimated to be more than $2,000 per car. Think what that means: Ford, for example, needs to cut $2,000 worth of features and quality out of its Taurus to compete with Toyota’s Avalon. Of course the Avalon feels like a better product — it has $2,000 more put into it. Considering this disadvantage, Detroit has done a remarkable job of designing and engineering its cars. But if this cost penalty persists, any bailout will only delay the inevitable.

Second, management as is must go. New faces should be recruited from unrelated industries — from companies widely respected for excellence in marketing, innovation, creativity and labor relations. The new management must work with labor leaders to see that the enmity between labor and management comes to an end. This division is a holdover from the early years of the last century, when unions brought workers job security and better wages and benefits. But as Walter Reuther, the former head of the United Automobile Workers, said to my father, “Getting more and more pay for less and less work is a dead-end street.”

You don’t have to look far for industries with unions that went down that road. Companies in the 21st century cannot perpetuate the destructive labor relations of the 20th. This will mean a new direction for the U.A.W., profit sharing or stock grants to all employees and a change in Big Three management culture. The need for collaboration will mean accepting sanity in salaries and perks. At American Motors, my dad cut his pay and that of his executive team, he bought stock in the company, and he went out to factories to talk to workers directly. Get rid of the planes, the executive dining rooms — all the symbols that breed resentment among the hundreds of thousands who will also be sacrificing to keep the companies afloat.

Investments must be made for the future. No more focus on quarterly earnings or the kind of short-term stock appreciation that means quick riches for executives with options. Manage with an eye on cash flow, balance sheets and long-term appreciation. Invest in truly competitive products and innovative technologies — especially fuel-saving designs — that may not arrive for years. Starving research and development is like eating the seed corn.

Just as important to the future of American carmakers is the sales force. When sales are down, you don’t want to lose the only people who can get them to grow. So don’t fire the best dealers, and don’t crush them with new financial or performance demands they can’t meet.

It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others. I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today. The research could be done at universities, at research labs and even through public-private collaboration. The federal government should also rectify the embedded tax penalties that favor foreign car makers. But don’t ask Washington to give shareholders and bondholders a free pass — they bet on management and they lost.

The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk. In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

    Today in Washington D. C. - Nov 20, 2008

The Senate will resume consideration of the motion to proceed to a bill to extend unemployment insurance (H.R. 6867). Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed cloture on the motion to proceed to the unemployment insurance bill. A vote on the bill could come later today. Also yesterday, Reid floated a number of unanimous consent agreements to try to pass a massive Democrat stimulus package (S. 3689), a bill to bail out states for their medical spending, and a Democrat bailout plan for the auto industry. All three requests were objected to by GOP senators.

A key theme during this lame duck session week was for whose interests Democrats in Congress are looking out. Taxpayers? The UAW? Automaker CEOs? The AP reports today that the answer appears to be environmental pressure groups:
“A Democratic Congress, unwilling or unable to approve a $25 billion bailout for Detroit’s Big Three, appears ready to punt the automakers’ fate to a lame-duck Republican president.” President Bush has suggested allowing the companies to use “a $25 billion loan program created by Congress in September — designed to help the companies develop more fuel-efficient vehicles — to meet the auto giants’ immediate financial needs.”
But Democrats “are vehemently opposed to letting the car companies tap the fuel-efficiency money — set aside to help switch to vehicles that burn less gasoline — for short-term cash-flow needs,” according to the AP story.

The ultimate responsibility, though, rests with Democrats to decide what to do here. Roll Call (a private subscription service) has an interesting read on the future of the next two years. In addressing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's, planned governance of the House (i.e., the same Sen Reid who led the Senate to one of its lowest rating in History) :
While Reid is known for often having a strong temper — and a difficulty in controlling his tongue — those who know Reid said he is focused on legislating and will look to keep politics out of the chamber as much as possible.

“Sen. Reid is focused on governing. We have an enormous opportunity over the next two years to pass meaningful legislation for the people of Nevada and the people of this country. And that’s where he’s focusing his energy,” one Democrat familiar with Reid said.

But one veteran Democrat warned that Reid is not afraid of a fight, saying the Majority Leader “ain’t afraid to whip out the old Searchlight sling blade and cut their N--- off.”

    Obama Daschles Hopes of Pro-Lifers

Tony Perkins, Famlily Research Council: Breaking news this afternoon suggests that President-elect Obama is unlikely to govern from the middle. By appointing former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D) as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, the 44th President provided a frightening glimpse of his new Cabinet. According to Politico, "Daschle was also considered for health care czar in the White House, but the transition team decided he could be more effective with Secretary in front of his name." As Majority Leader, Daschle was a notorious opponent of every pro-life measure. He blocked the partial-birth abortion ban, voted for taxpayer-funded military abortions, and supported a measure that would have forced Americans to pay for the distribution of the morning-after pill to young school girls. Apart from his extreme political ideology, the selection of Daschle is even more troubling because the South Dakotan lacks any experience in the public health arena. To most Americans, who thought this election was about "change," these appointments must seem incredibly ironic. So far, the new Obama administration has only managed to change the titles of the same old liberal leadership. See also: AP: Daschle accepts HHS Cabinet post

    Crouching Fascism, Hidden Media

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: We are posting an advance copy Brian Fitzpatick article. CMI will add it and a link in a few days. David is one of the up and coming great minds and writers of our day. by Brian Fitzpatrick, Senior Editor, Culture and Media Institute: A wave of quasi-fascism has descended upon California and touched several other states. But instead of exposing the abuse, the media are ignoring it.

On November 4, California voters approved Proposition 8, the state constitutional amendment declaring that only marriages between a man and a woman are valid in the Golden State. Since then, militants have vandalized property, threatened individuals and mailed white powder to Mormon churches. Most Americans probably are not aware of this fascistic behavior, because the media – the people who are supposed to be the first line of defense against domestic tyranny – are absent.

Fascism is a powerful word, but often used imprecisely, so let’s define our terms. The following definition comes from former Columbia historian Robert O. Paxton, author of The Anatomy of Fascism:A form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion. How does the term “fascism” apply to America? A national network of angry gay rights demonstrators is screaming for the use of force – judicial force – to nullify Prop. 8. They’ve committed numerous acts of verbal abuse and physical violence (check out the account and video of Christian evangelists being hounded out of San Francisco’s Castro district) and are openly seeking revenge against churches and businesses that supported Prop. 8. As they did previously in Massachusetts, they have uncovered lists of citizens who supported marriage and targeted them for abuse and boycotts. Is this a form of Paxton’s “internal cleansing?”

This network of homosexual protesters is far from nationalistic, but otherwise it’s quite similar to Paxton’s definition. It’s easily seen as a “mass-based cult of unity or energy,” motivated by perceptions of victimhood, and abandoning “democratic liberties” to pursue its goals without the ethical and legal restraints customary in American politics.

This mass movement is also collaborating effectively, but not at all uneasily, with traditional elites. First, the politicians. Same-sex “marriage” has been imposed in three states by rogue courts and governors who ignored the rule of law—Massachusetts, California and most recently Connecticut. Prop. 8 was a popular backlash against the California Supreme Court edict. Now Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is calling for the court elite to strike back by declaring Prop. 8 unconstitutional. California Attorney General Jerry Brown, an outspoken supporter of gay “marriage,” is calling for the court to issue a new decree quickly. California’s top elected officials want the court to overrule the clearly expressed will of their own citizens.

Maybe “citizens” is the wrong word. Citizens govern themselves. Golden State elites seem to be turning Californians into subjects. On to the news media elites. Democracy itself is under attack in California, and what are the supposed watchdogs of freedom, the free press, doing about it? When they’re not applauding, they’re strategically averting their eyes.

Within two days of the popular passage of Prop. 8, the media began defining the story as gay civil rights denied, rather than civilization defended. Media outlets began to caricature supporters of Prop. 8 as bigots, and refused to allow them to tell their side of the story. (See last week’s Culture Links for details.) The prevailing media attitude toward legalizing same-sex “marriage” is exemplified by a five minute, on-air editorial by MSNBC’s resident attack dog, Keith Olbermann. Olbermann called the Prop. 8 vote “horrible, horrible.” The poor guy was so emotionally distressed, he forgot to shout.

The moral credibility of homosexual agitators is based on public perception that they are “victims,” so the media have virtually ignored numerous examples of gay activists victimizing their political adversaries. Broadcast television networks have failed to show gay protesters hurling racial and religious epithets at African-Americans and Mormons, two groups largely responsible for Prop. 8’s victory. Normally, such outright bigotry would be front page news.

The media are even ignoring sacrilege and violence. Until Bill O’Reilly showed a video clip on Nov. 17 on Fox News, only one major newspaper, and no broadcast networks, covered the carefully planned Nov. 9 assault of Mt. Hope Church in Lansing, Michigan, by homosexual activists during a worship service. No national networks, to the best of our knowledge, have shown the dramatic footage at Palm Springs City Hall of screaming protesters roughing up an elderly counter-protester, tearing a cross from her hands and stomping on it.

Even a reprise of the anthrax scare has gone almost unreported. Only a handful of newspapers and NBC’s Today show have noted that domestic terrorists have sent packages containing white powder to Mormon churches. Entertainment media elites are getting their licks in, too. CNN reported yesterday that Roseanne Barr, for example, said African-Americans are “as bigoted and ignorant as their white Christian white right wing counterparts.” Ah, the sweet sound of tolerance.

America hasn’t yet seen political violence of the kind that led to takeovers of Germany and Italy by Fascist thugs before World War II. But if media outlets don’t investigate these incidents, expose the perpetrators, and pressure the government to press charges, we can only anticipate greater political violence. Eventually, the media themselves will be the targets.

    Mike Hucabee Survives The View

Michael Steele Defended on Pro-Life Issue

Responding to false smear anonymous emails to RNC committee members, David Brody, The Brody File - Christian Broadcasting Network: . . . [S]ome anonymous emails are circulating within Republican circles suggesting he’s not pro-life enough to be chairman. . . .
[In Response] Joyce Lyons Terhes, an RNC National Committeewoman, from Steele’s home state of Maryland is sending the following letter around to RNC members: Part of it is below: Dear fellow RNC member: I wanted to write personally because I'm angry … and because you should know the truth about Michael Steele.

Michael is a wonderful man who has given generously over 20 years of service to our party and to conservative causes – as a volunteer, county chairman, Maryland State Party Chairman, statewide elected official and now as Chairman of GOPAC.

But some of Michael's opponents in the race for RNC Chairman have started an anonymous mudslinging campaign. You've probably seen the emails. They claim Michael is not as pro-life as he needs to be. Well as someone who has known Michael for almost 20 years I can tell you these charges are absolutely false. No wonder the people behind these emails won't reveal their identities.

Here's the truth. Michael is the only current candidate for RNC chairman who has ever been endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee. I've attached the endorsement Michael received when he ran for Senate here in Maryland two years ago. Oh, and by the way, it's not easy running for public office in Maryland as a staunch pro-lifer. But that is exactly what Michael did. He never backed down. Never made excuses.
Look, here’s the reality. Steele’s critics have a huge task ahead of them if they’re going to make the case that the guy is not pro-life enough. He’s got the solid track record on the life issue. It’s hard to argue against it.

. . . The challenges for the incoming chairman will be numerous including how to brand the GOP a certain way without sacrificing conservative principles. Steele has quite a few advantages in the race. He’s well liked within the party, he’s an effective communicator, he seems to have the social value and fiscal discipline package and because he’s African-American it also may send a greater signal to the country that the GOP is not the same old “bunch of white guys” party. The GOP needs to start a new conversation with Americans. Steele could be the bridge to that next step.

    Today in Washington D. C. - Nov 19, 2008

The Senate will be evaluating the Auto-industry manufacturers' request for a bailout. On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid began the process of bringing up four bills that could be brought to a vote later this week: the House-passed unemployment insurance extension bill (H.R. 6867), the House-passed “stimulus” bill, which includes unemployment insurance (H.R. 7110), a bailout for domestic auto manufacturers and unemployment insurance (S. 3688), and large package containing the stimulus bill and auto bailout (S. 3689). It is likely only one of these will be voted on, if any.

If the Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats stand strong their will be no bailout for the auto manufactures. Many are advocating that a business going bankrupt is not a lost industry but an opportunity for the auto manufacturers to restructure and especially correct the overburdened high priced union labor contracts that are driving up the cost of auto's beyond market price or demand. In addition, with retooling an mechanization like ford Motors has done in the plants in other countries, higher quality is achieved while labor costs are reduced thus making better quality cars at lower prices.

The Wall Street Journal notes an important subplot of these discussions. The Journal writes, “[L]ook closely and you can see that what's really going on is an attempt to use taxpayer money to remake Detroit in the image of the modern environmental movement. Given a choice between greens and blue-collar workers, Congress puts the greens first. . . . Earlier this year, Congress had approved $25 billion in loans to the car companies for ‘green retooling,’ and the White House said Friday that Detroit could tap that money quickly for more general purposes with a couple of conditions. . . . Democratic leaders refused. They are insisting instead that the Bush Administration give Detroit another $25 billion in cash from the Treasury’s Troubled Asset Relief Program. ‘The Bush Administration’s proposal is unacceptable,’ declared Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.”

One question for Democrats appears to be which they consider more important: creating an auto industry that serves green goals above all else, or saving the blue-collar jobs they’re concerned about.

Video: How Obama Got Elected ... Interviews With Obama Voters

HowObamaGotElected.com looks at how media coverage of the 2008 election impacted what Obama voters knew (or thought they knew) about the campaign.

On November 4th, 2008 millions of Americans were shocked that a man of Barack Obama's limited experience, extreme liberal positions and radical political alliances could be elected President of the United States. For many of these Americans, the explanation was rather simple... the news media, completely enamored with Obama, simply refused to do their job.

On Election day twelve Obama voters were interviewed extensively right after they voted to learn how the news media impacted their knowledge of what occurred during the campaign. These voters were chosen for their apparent intelligence/verbal abilities and willingness to express their opinions to a large audience. The rather shocking video below seeks to provide some insight into which information broke through the news media clutter and which did not.
    Zogby Poll

    512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points

97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates

Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions

57.4% could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)

81.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)

82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)

88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)

56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing).

    And yet.....

Only 13.7% failed to identify Sarah Palin as the person on which their party spent $150,000 in clothes

Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter

And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her "house," even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!

Only 2.4% got at least 11 correct.

Only .5% got all of them correct. (And we "gave" one answer that was technically not Palin, but actually Tina Fey)

Anybody Listening - The Global Threats Will Kill Us

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: The media is presently focused on the vetting of potential nominees for the Obama administration, on the planning for the next inauguration, and on the Congressional weeping and gnashing of teeth over the Economy or at least the Democrats present inability to save their brotherhood of auto-union contributors from the consequences of over priced wages and benefits. The media does little to focus on the global threats. The election was about the economy (me, mine and maybe my family) verse the unmentionable National threats. After all, who want to think about being killed or another 9-11 event on American soil. But - the following referenced current events, extracted from the Global Security Newswire, remind us that we live in a dangerous world where others, in a blink of an eye, could destroy our economy, our country, family, friends and us.

Nuclear Terror Risks Demand Global Attention, Report Says
Despite progress toward securing nuclear weapon-usable materials around the globe, nations must do more to prevent terrorists from acquiring the means to create a nuclear nightmare, a major new Harvard University report urged today (see GSN, Sept. 27, 2007). Securing the Bomb 2008, the seventh report in an annual series, warns that it is difficult the estimate the likelihood of a terrorist nuclear attack, but the consequences of such an event require world leaders to take immediate steps....Full Story

And when we catch a terrorist: Alleged Al-Qaeda Member Deemed Unfit for Trial...Full Story Just a minute, wouldn't you agree that a Muslim terrorist who is willing to kill innocent people and even themselves while trusting in a self-promotion effort to meet Allah and 72 Virgins in paradise might also be "unfit for trial." But in this case, the terrorist is a woman. I guess by definition she doesn't qualify for the 72 virgins so she must be "cra--zy." Another example of why non-American terrorist cases do not belong in the American civil court system.

The Senate is not in session today and will reconvene at 9:30 AM on Wednesday.

However, Senate Republicans met this morning to elect the following leadership team for the upcoming 111th Congress:
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell (KY) - Republican Leader

  • Sen. Jon Kyl (AZ) - Republican Whip.

  • Sen. Lamar Alexander (TN) - Republican Conference Chair.

  • Sen. John Ensign (NV) - Republican Policy Chair

  • Sen. John Thune (SD) - Republican Conference Vice Chair.

  • Sen. John Cornyn (TX) - National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair

  • From Senate & News Sources: According to Roll Call, “Because of Senate rules, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is temporarily shutting down the chamber to bypass floor time so that the stimulus bill can be taken up when the Senate reopens Wednesday morning.”

Republicans and Democrats instead each met to hold their leadership elections.

Yesterday, Reid began the process of bringing up four bills that could be brought to a vote later this week: the House-passed unemployment insurance extension bill (H.R. 6867), the House-passed “stimulus” bill, which includes unemployment insurance (H.R. 7110), a bailout for domestic auto manufacturers and unemployment insurance (S. 3688), and large package containing the stimulus bill and auto bailout (S. 3689). "The Reverend" Al Sharpton Slapped With $500,000 FEC Fine

Thanks NewsGuy at The Right Perspective for pointing us to the New York Post story that the "Reverend" "race-hustling, poverty-pimp Al Sharpton has been slapped by the Federal Elections Commission with nearly $500,000 in fines for jumbling expenses from his private businesses with those for his failed 2004 US presidential campaign."
An exhaustive audit of Sharpton's American Express charges between 2002 and 2004 - a time when he lived lavishly in top hotels while crisscrossing the country - found a hodgepodge of sloppy record-keeping and dubious expenses. Investigators say Sharpton jumbled personal expenses with his private businesses, his National Action Network and his Sharpton 2004 campaign in violation of strict campaign-finance rules - a civil infraction. . . . In all, he owes $497,803, the FEC ruled.

"It is the opinion of the audit staff that the candidate used funds raised by NAN to promote his presidential campaign," they said. Sharpton - who settled with the IRS earlier this year over millions in back taxes - had long feuded with the FEC since it demanded in 2004 that he return $100,000 in federal matching funds for his presidential campaign. Auditors said the amount of improper financing could be as high as $735,314, but because of shoddy records, they could substantiate only $486,803. . . .

    A Little History on Guns

The tragic effect of gun bans throughout history. Statistics of exterminations in different countries where gun bans were applied. CANTOR TELLS THE TRUTH

William J. Murray, Chairman Religious Freedom Coalition: Congressman Eric Cantor, who will soon be number two in the leadership of House Republicans, has cut through the fog and said publicly what is wrong with the GOP. He told the Washington Times, "Where we have really fallen down is, we have lacked the ability to be relevant to people's lives. Let's set aside the last eight years, and our falling down in living up to expectations of what we said we were going to do." He went on to say, "It's the roads, it's going to the gas station, that's still there when the price will bump back up. It's education, it's health care. These are the issues, frankly, that we have not been on offense with" At last someone in the GOP that wants to talk about today rather than rest on the laurels of Ronald Reagan's accomplishments.

    Today in Washington D. C. - Nov 17, 2008

The Senate reconvenes at noon today. Votes could come this week on a new rescue package for domestic auto manufacturers and a collection of public lands bills that Reid wants to move over the objections of Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). The House will reconvene on Wednesday, but it’s not clear if any new legislation will be offered.

From Senate & News Sources: As the Senate returns today for a lame-duck session , attention is focused on proposals for a potential rescues package for domestic auto manufacturers. The companies are looking for $25 billion in loans. Some leading Democrats are pushing to introduce a bill today, but no one has provided any details of what would be in such a bill.

However, there doesn’t appear to be much public support from Democrats for this approach. USA Today notes that “among Democrats, there has been a lack of full-throated support. Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, home to three American-owned auto plants, said in a statement Friday, ‘We are going to have to do more to protect tax dollars for me to vote for this.’” According to USA Today, “The Bush administration opposes using part of the $700 billion financial rescue package to help the automakers. The White House has instead proposed freeing up a separate $25 billion in loans that were designed to help carmakers retool factories to build more fuel-efficient vehicles.”

The White House proposal is something to consider, but “Democrats . . . don’t want to divert that money. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada on Friday called the idea ‘unacceptable.’” Democrats don’t seem to want to go down this road since it pits two of their key constituencies against one another: environmental groups who wanted the green vehicle incentives, and unions who want the auto industry rescued. Kimberley Strassel had a good discussion of this dilemma in her Wall Street Journal column on Friday.

Indeed, as Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday, “It would be helpful to know if a majority of [Sen. Reid’s] caucus even supports what he will propose. The silence from the Democrat rank and file on this matter has been deafening.” As discussions on the auto industry continue, Sen. McConnell identified an important issue that hasn’t received as much attention: “We owe it to the people of Nevada, Kentucky and all across America to make known the impact this bailout would have on the deficit; the taxpayers deserve to know if this bailout would increase the national debt and raise their taxes.”

    Obama Supports Dividing Jerusalem!

The Liberty Sphere is reporting: There is breaking news this afternoon indicating that rumors concerning Barack Obama's secret meetings with Hamas and other Palestinian leaders can now be confirmed.
The Obama administration plans to advance a 'peace plan' for the Middle East that calls on Israel to withdraw her boundaries to their pre-1967 levels, which will essentially split Jerusalem in half, giving away a large part of the ancient Jewish city to Israel's enemies. . . the Obama team had secret meetings with Hamas during Obama's trip to Europe and the Middle East during the campaign. The purpose of those secret meetings, according to the anonymous sources, was to cut a deal to give away half of Jerusalem to Middle East terrorists in exchange for 'peace' in the region. . . . Two special reports, one by Middle East expert and journalist Caroline Glick, and the other by Gateway Pundit, will provide complete information on this highly disturbing development. If Israel cannot count on the United States as her closest friend and ally, then who can she count on? Big changes are ahead in our foreign policy toward Israel under Barack Obama, and those changes will be disastrous. . . . [CONFIRMED! Obama Supports Dividing Jerusalem!]

Crowded Field for Arkansas GOP Chair

ARRA Editors comment: Lord knows, the Arkansas Republican Party needs a new leader. One that is well spoken, motivated, even handed, center minded, new media savy (willing to work with conservative state blogers), and who can stand center stage offering solutions and confronting a Democrat controlled Little Rock. Hum - the same type that the GOP needs as its new RNC Chairman.
by Jason Tolbert (The Tolbert Report): Former state representative Jake Files confirmed today to “The Tolbert Report” that he is considering running for the chairman position of the Republican Party of Arkansas, joining a crowded field which includes Joseph Wood, Doyle Webb, and possibly Bryan King. Files states that he expects to reach a decision by this weekend. Files currently serves as chairman of the Sebastian County Republican Party and works as a real estate developer with Foster, Files, & Harris LLC. Previously, Files represented the Fort Smith area in the state house of representative from 1999 to 2002. Files made national headlines recently with his outspoken criticism of Gov. Huckabee during his Presidential Campaign, particularly the Governor’s tense relationship with the state legislature. Files has achieved success as chairman in Sebastian County included the election of Republicans Terry Rice and Stephanie Malone and the near upset by John Van Gorder over incumbent Steve Breedlove.

Post Election: Huckabee Remains on the GOP Radar

Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: The presidential election is over, Sen. John McCain is is a candidate no more and showing deference to president-elect Obama, but the GOP primary runner up Mike Huckabee is busier than ever. Besides the release of his new book, speaking engagements, raising funds and directing HuckPac, he has very own Fox News weekend evening Mike Huckabee Show Huckabee which has a growing audience (which includes me). The former Arkansas preacher from Hope, Arkansas, turned Lt Governor, then Governor, then presidential candidate, has never relented from his premise for the America to give "Hope another chance." I am one of many conservative Arkansans that would like to see Gov. Huckabee run for the U.S. senate in 2010 to replace liberal democrat Sen. Blanche Lincoln.

Regardless of my druthers, only Mike knows his plans for the future and continues to evidence that he is a prime prime time player on many different fronts and in fact may still be in the run for the presidency in 2012. The following posts depict that Mike will now be a regular on ABC Radio, will be on "The View" this week, and is traveling to Iowa to promote his book - yes, Iowa where he gained national recognition as a viable GOP presidential candidate. He is also stumping for his former campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, for RNC Chairman.

While Mike owes Saltsman a lot for running his campaign with minimum resources, I am question whether Saltsman is the right person to be the "voice" of the Republican Party. Of the candidates so far, I favor Michael Steele's even handed, center minded, new media savy personlity to stand center stage offering solutions and confronting a Democrat controlled Washington. But, what if we urged Mike Huckabee to step forward to be the RNC Chairman? Howard Dean did it for the Democrats and proved to be more successful as his party chair than as a presidential candidate. Image, the impact on the Republican Party if Mike Huckabee were the new voice of the RNC.

ABC Radio Networks is launches “The Huckabee Report.”
"ABC Radio Networks has signed former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to its roster of news/talk talent. “The Huckabee Report” will be broadcast weekday mornings and afternoons and provide listeners with the top news stories of the day while also drawing on Huckabee’s experiences as a former governor and presidential candidate. The short form news features will launch on Jan. 5.”
Fellow Arkansas blogger Jason Tolbert reported in The Tolbert Report on Friday that Mike Huckabee will be on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday:
Gov. Mike Huckabee will be on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday, November 18 which is also the day his new book “Do the Right Thing” is released. It should be interesting to see how the ladies of “The View” respond. Gov. Huckabee always does well on this type of show and I am sure this will be no exception. I predict he will have them all giggling like crazy by the end of the show. In Central Arkansas, “The View” airs on KATV at 10:00 AM, so set your DVR's. If I can find the YouTube of this, I will try to post it here on Tuesday.
The American Chronicle reflects on Huckabee's future political asperations:
Mike Huckabee is wasting no time in starting his 2012 Presidential campaign. He will be traveling to Iowa next week to promote his latest book, as was mentioned today in the Des Moines Register. Huckabee is also taking time to promote his former campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, for RNC Chairman, above such luminaries as Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele.
