ARRA Issues Pamphlet: Eight Reason to Oppose a State Lottery

Dr. Pat Briney, President of the Arkansas Republican Assembly has issued a pamphlet detailing "Eight reasons to oppose a state lottery." The document was released in response to limited number of Arkansas lawmakers who are proposing a state lottery.

Lt. Gov. Bill Halter previously announced a proposed constitutional amendment to create a state sponsored lottery in Arkansas. Presently, the state’s constitution bans lotteries. Halter hopes the Legislature will approve the constitutional amendment in time for the November 2008 general election. Arkansas Rep. Will Bond (D-Jacksonville) filed
HJR 1005 an bill to refer to voters an amendment to establish a State Lottery.

Is a state lottery a good source of revenue for Arkansas, and will it promote well being of Arkansans? The facts says no. Read the "
Eight reasons to oppose a state lottery." It is critical that voters understand the pitfalls and problems associated with a lottery. After reviewing the info, please contact your Arkansas State Representatives and Senators about the proposed lottery amendment and share the following link with your friends and family:

Bad News From Pakistan (humor)

We really ARE in trouble now!
This morning, from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Migration, Mohammed Omar, warned the United States and Canada that if Military action against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities will cut off America's and Canada's supply of convenience store managers and taxi drivers.
And if this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by AOL & Dell customer service reps. It's getting ugly! [Source: unknown]

North American Union "Conspiracy" Exposed

By Cliff Kincaid, Accuracy in Media Special Report: Accuracy in Media attended an all-day February 16 conference devoted to the development of a North American legal system in order to produce this report and shed light on a process that is being conducted largely beyond the scrutiny of the public or the Congress.

Robert Pastor, a top Democratic Party foreign policy specialist and a former official of the Carter Administration and director of the Center for North American Studies at American University, said that a "very small group" of conservatives is unfairly accusing him of being at the center of a "vast conspiracy" to implement the idea of a "North American Union" by "stealth." He called this "absurd." But, his remarks were made at an all-day Feb. 16 conference devoted to the development of a North American legal system. The conference itself was evidence that a comprehensive process is underway to merge the economies, and perhaps the social and political systems, of the three countries.

Overruling the U.S. Supreme Court: Academic literature distributed in advance to conference participants about a common legal framework for the U.S., Canada and Mexico included proposals for a North American Court of Justice (with the authority to overrule a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court), a North American Trade Tribunal, a North American Court of Justice, and a Charter of Fundamental Human Rights for North America, also dubbed the North American Social Charter. Under the latter concept, according to Laura Spitz of the Univ. of Colorado Law School, North Americans might be able to enjoy "new rights" essential to "human flourishing" such as gay marriage. She argues in one paper that U.S. economic integration with Canada will make it nearly impossible for the U.S. not to recognize same-sex marriage so long as it is lawful in Canada. ... conference literature disclosed that the CNAS is sponsoring an event in May in which students participate in a model "North American Parliament." The concept suggests creation of a regional body to supersede the U.S. Government.

Attacking Conservatives: Stephen Zamora of the Univ. of Houston Law School, denounced the idea of a wall separating Mexico and the U.S., in order to control illegal immigration, asking, "What does citizenship mean anymore?" ... Another speaker, Tom Farer, Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies at the Univ. of Denver, said that his representative in Congress, Tom Tancredo (R-Col.), a staunch advocate of U.S. border security, was a backward thinker.

No Border Control: Pastor acknowledged that the U.S. Government doesn't want to enforce its immigration laws. He said that the solution is not a fence, ..., and it's not to punish companies for hiring illegal aliens, since identity documents can be too easily forged. His solution is a national biometric and fraud-proof identification card that identifies national origin and legal status and a $200-billion North American Investment Fund, is for the purpose of narrowing the income disparity between Mexico and the U.S. and Canada. Little Rock School District released from court supervision

Little Rock, Arkansas: Yesterday, February 23, 2007, U.S. District Judge Bill Wilson Jr. ruled that the Little Rock School District has achieved unitary status. After nine years the LRSD is no longer under Federal Court supervision and monitoring. In the ruling, Judge Wilson declared that the Little Rock School Board "can now operate as it sees fit" and is "answerable to no one except the LRSD's students and patrons and the voters who elected them to office." Judge orders 'gay' agenda taught to Christian children

Rules kids need teachings to be'engaged and productive citizens'

By Bob Unruh, WorldNetDaily: A federal judge in Massachusetts has ordered the "gay" agenda taught to Christians who attend a public school in Massachusetts, finding that they need the teachings to be "engaged and productive citizens. "U.S. District Judge Mark L. Wolf yesterday dismissed a civil rights lawsuit brought by David Parker, ordering that it is reasonable, indeed there is an obligation, for public schools to teach young children to accept and endorse homosexuality. Wolf essentially adopted the reasoning in a brief submitted by a number of homosexual-advocacy groups, who said "the rights of religious freedom and parental control over the upbringing of children ... would undermine teaching and learning" . . . Kennedy - McCain Senate amnesty bill nearly complete

More lenient toward illegals than last year's bill

Washington TimesSenators and lobbyists are putting the final touches on a comprehensive immigration-reform bill that includes an easier citizenship path for illegal aliens and weaker enforcement provisions than were in the highly criticized legislation that the Senate approved last year. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), who ardently supports citizenship rights for illegals, will introduce the bill as early as next week, according to Senate sources knowledgeable about the negotiations. If the Senate Judiciary Committee can make quick work of the bill, it could be ready for floor action in April. Sen. Kennedy drafted this year's bill with help from Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and outside lobbyists. McCain and the outside groups share Kennedy's support for increased immigration and leniency for illegals already in the country. . . [Click for more]

Priceless Politics

By Thomas Sowell: Among the many rationales used to defend the welfare state, the most powerful is that it is necessary, in order to take care of the poor and the downtrodden. But the amount of money required to bring every poor person in the country above the official poverty line is a fraction of what is spent by government on the welfare state. Put bluntly, the poor are in effect being used as human shields in the political wars over government spending, which extends far beyond anyone who could even plausibly be called poor. Politicians will spend money wherever that is likely to increase their chances of getting re-elected. Abraham Lincoln & Ronald Reagan Top Presidents in 2007 Survey

In a national survey by US News and World Report the to top presidents according to Americans were Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan. George Washington, the founder of our nation and the man who led the Army that freed us from British rule came in sixth behind Bill Clinton and John Kennedy. Clinton and Kennedy also led Franklin Roosevelt who led us to victory in WW2. I don't even want to know the logic behind Bill Clinton being picked over Washington and Roosevelt. No Mandatory HPV Vaccine For Girls!

By TVC Exec Director Andrea Lafferty: Merck, the giant drug company, has come under fire in recent weeks over its lobbying efforts to have their drug, Gardasil, forced upon public school girls throughout the nation. Merck, the giant drug company, has come under fire in recent weeks over its lobbying efforts to have their drug, Gardasil, forced upon public school girls throughout the nation.

TVC is calling upon the Department of Justice to investigate the behind-the-scenes scheming that Merck has done to influence the votes of state legislators to push mandates of this drug on girls. If this isn’t the sort of activity which interstate commerce regulation and federal racketeering statutes were designed to prohibit -- what is?

The public outcry has gotten so loud that Merck announced on Feb. 20 that it would stop its lobbying campaign to persuade state legislatures to mandate this HPV vaccine for all girls as young as nine years old. It was doing much of its lobbying through an organization called Women in Government. This decision to stop lobbying for mandating this vaccine is clearly intended to put off any possible investigation of the company or the drug itself. How many politicians were influenced by political contributions by Merck? How much money has Merck dropped into the political campaigns of politicians – both Republican and Democrat – in order to buy favor in state legislatures? Clearly, having a drug mandated for grade school girls is a gold mine for Merck, who will reap billions in profits each year. [Read More]

EXCRUCIATING PUN OF THE WEEK

As the ice caps of the North Pole begin to melt, some scientists have postulated the possibility of transporting the polar bears – which live only around the Arctic Circle – down to the South Pole. Sadly, it’s a non-starter because the bears are not bi-polar. Ouch! (Source: The Guardian, 20 February 2007).

Newt Gingrich & Mario Cuomo to Discuss Issues - Feb 28th

The Cooper Union Dialogue Series: A Lincoln-Inspired Event With Newt Gingrich, Mario M. Cuomo, Tim Russert, and Harold Holzer
Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Rep. (1995 - 1999) and represented Georgia for 20 years, and Mario M. Cuomo, former governor of New York (1983-1995), will meet to discuss issues facing presidential candidates in the 2008 election. Host of "Meet the Press" Tim Russert will moderate the discussion. Sharing the belief that national and international issues facing presidential candidates deserve full discussion and analysis in the style of Lincoln's time, Gingrich and Cuomo will issue a challenge to all declared presidential candidates to come to the Great Hall and address the American public in the same manner Lincoln did 147 years ago when he delivered his "Right Makes Might" address at The Cooper Union.

They will have a 90-minute, unrestricted, unrehearsed dialogue about the major challenges confronting America today. The event will remind our fellow Americans of a time when campaign debates were real debates, not a series of poll-tested, consultant-written, 30-second sound bites. They will also issue a challenge to the men and women running for President. You to can attend the event will by webcast live on Feb. 28th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm EST at www.AmericanSolutions.com.

A Bad Idea - $500 Fines for Professors

by Dr. Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Education blogs and websites are hot with discussions over a proposal in Arizona banning professors from taking "one side of a social, political, or cultural issue that is a matter of partisan controversy" and threatening them with lawsuits and fines. The chief sponsor of the bill is the State Senate Republican majority leader. The bill would ban public college and university professors, while working, from doing several items. While there are many left-wing professors who use their classrooms for political purposes and have participated in advocacy situations far beyond the scope of their employment, I must join with them and others in stating that this is a bad idea.

Some professors push the envelope beyond their positions (sometimes with the administration's support). They say and do things that are beyond any given right of free speech. As identified by David French, public university professors often forget that they don’t have “free speech rights” that are comparable to the rights of their students. University professors are public employees, and when speaking in their official capacities (such as during class time), they are speaking not as private citizens but as representatives of the state government. To read more about a court decision that begins to delineate the limits on the free speech of professors, read: Professors’ Academic Freedom and the Seventh Circuit.

Again, this legislature should be defeated. Yes, I know Arizona bill is trying to restrain left-wing professors who have gone beyond extremes in free speech and participated in advocacy beyond the scope of the assigned disciplines. I also oppose Hate Crimes legislation which would lead to limiting free speech even when repugnant to another group.

Unfortunately, many faculty members and university officials seem oblivious to the fact that their abuses are leading them down the road of regulation. For many years, professors have enjoyed academic freedom greater in scope than their rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. Abuse of this freedom is going to continue to incite legislatures and universities to roll back previously "allowed freedom" that extends beyond the scope of the discipline they teach. On the other side of the issue, there are educational institutions restricting the free speech of employees (staff as well as faculty) in areas like religion expression, speech outside of the classroom and designated workspace, speech off the campus or speech made in private associations. Officials at these institutions display arrogance beyond ignorance in restricting their employee's free speech rights. I hope that employees of these situations discover that they have far more power over their own expression than allowed by the officials at their institution.

Democrats Slow Bleed Plan Will Hamstring Military Commanders

Mike Duncan, RNC Chair: The Democrat 'slow bleed' strategy for Iraq that was proposed by John Murtha would do exactly what it sounds like: gradually take away the resources our men and women need to fight the terrorists in Iraq. It would limit reinforcements, and possibly even close the bases that offer support and shelter for our troops. The Democrats had hoped to keep the 'slow bleed' plan under the radar by adding it onto other bills, but now even the liberal press are reporting on the story.

Per a Washington Post editorial, Murtha's 'slow bleed' plan would "crudely hamstringing the ability of military commanders to deploy troops"..."Mr. Murtha's cynicism is matched by an alarming ignorance about conditions in Iraq. He continues to insist that Iraq 'would be more stable with us out of there,' in spite of the consensus of U.S. intelligence agencies that early withdrawal would produce 'massive civilian casualties.' He says he wants to force the administration to 'bulldoze' the Abu Ghraib prison, even though it was emptied of prisoners and turned over to the Iraqi government last year. He wants to 'get our troops out of the Green Zone' because 'they are living in Saddam Hussein's palace'; could he be unaware that the zone's primary occupants are the Iraqi government and the U.S. Embassy? It would be nice to believe that Mr. Murtha does not represent the mainstream of the Democratic Party or the thinking of its leadership. Yet when asked about Mr. Murtha's remarks Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) offered her support." Even the liberal columnist E.J. Dionne criticized the Murtha 'slow bleed' plan, saying that "the sense that the proposal has been crafted in part for reasons of political convenience and the intricate restrictions it would place on the military are precisely what could doom it."

Those are exactly the reasons 'slow bleed' should be doomed, and we need your help to do it: Write a letter to your editor or call in to talk radio today condemning the Democrat 'slow bleed' strategy. And then call your Congressman or Senator and tell them not to support a plan that would leave our brave men and women in harm's way without adequate resources to protect themselves. The Murtha 'slow bleed' strategy is a dishonest and dangerous response to the challenges we face in Iraq. Together, we can and we must stop Congress from passing the Murtha plan.

Two New Outrages of Justice Department Abusing Border Patrol Agents

"It appears we are giving more credence to directions from Mexican government officials than we are to the dictates of our own Constitution and the security of the people of the United States." - Congressman Dana Rohrabacher

The American Conservative Union: If you're outraged at the treatment of Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean -- who were railroaded for defending America's borders -- then make sure you've taken your blood pressure medicine before you read what's coming next. Two new outrages have surfaced -- two cases of law enforcement officers being hauled before a kangaroo court, accused of abusing illegal aliens who actually attacked them, and convicted by perjured testimony.

The first outrage: Texas Deputy Sheriff Guillermo "Gilmer" Hernandez saw a blue Chevy Suburban run a red light in Rocksprings, a favorite sneak alley for Mexican smugglers of drugs and illegal aliens. .... U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton charged Hernandez with "concealing facts" (Sound familiar?) and "Violating the Civil Rights" of an illegal alien. Yep, the same Johnny Sutton who persecuted Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean.

The Second Outrage: David Sipe, a Border Patrol agent -- while on duty in Penitas, Texas -- saw a group of 12 to 15 illegal aliens crossing the border. He ordered them to halt, but two fled into a thick patch of reeds. Sipe went in after them and, according to his testimony, was attacked by Jose Guevara, an illegal alien. Sipe defended himself and struck Guevara with a flashlight. As a consequence, Guevara required five stitches in his head. ...Sipe was subsequently charged with with Using Excessive Force and Causing Bodily Injury. That was in 2001. And incidentally, Guevara was subsequently awarded an $80,000 settlement from the U.S. government -- based on the guilty ruling. Fortunately, that's not the end of the story. Sipe appealed and was granted a new trial by the federal appeals court. Why? Because the U. S. Attorney's office lied to the court in order to gain a conviction. What happened at the new trial? Sipe was found NOT GUILTY!

THE RAMOS-COMPEAN, HERNANDEZ AND SIPE CASES -- WHEN TAKEN TOGETHER -- SHOULD ILLUSTRATE THAT SOMETHING DEEPER... IS GOING ON HERE! The similarities between the Hernandez case and the Ramos-Compean cases are simply too striking to ignore. Johnny Sutton pursued all three defendants with cruel disregard for their records of spotless service as law enforcement officers. In both instances the government's case was built on the perjured testimony of illegal aliens and smugglers. In both trials, Sutton charged the defendants with concealing evidence; and in both instances the "concealment," if it occurred at all, was trivial and irrelevant -- a measure of Sutton's obsession to shut down efforts by law enforcement to seal our borders. In both cases, the law officers were defending themselves after being attacked. In both cases, these criminal aliens were given immunity from prosecution, and treated like visiting dignitaries -- a disgusting spectacle to law-abiding citizens who despise dope dealers and smugglers of human cargo. ...

Tying It All Together! Evidence has now come to light that in both the Hernandez and the Ramos-Compean cases, the Mexican government was behind the aggressive prosecution of these three law enforcement officers! Apparently, our government genuflected before the Mexican government and rushed out to accommodate the requests! We now know that in both the Hernandez and the Ramos-Compean cases, the Mexican government sent written correspondence to our government and demanded that our government "fix" the situation.

Something smells... and it's up to the American people to make certain that Congress follows the stench to its source! An e-mail to the President or an e-mail to an individual Senator or Congressman is NOT going to do the job. The American people need a full congressional investigation and the 69 Members of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Senate Committee on Foreign Relations have the power to make that investigation happen! George Washington - an American who could have been King

Judge Roy Moore: Today we celebrate the birthday of our first President, George Washington, a man so esteemed by his countrymen that he was asked not just to be their President, but also their king. Washington wisely declined the offer of ultimate power, choosing instead to devote his time and fortune in humble service to the nation he helped create. In his Farewell Address, Washington observed that he had spent "45 years of [his] life dedicated to [the country's] service with an upright zeal." He was known as the "Father of our Country" for his service in the Continental Congress, as commander in chief of the Continental Army, as president of the Constitutional Convention, and finally as the first president of the United States. Through this devoted service, he earned the admiration and respect of those with whom he served. Chief Justice John Marshall described Washington in his eulogy as "First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen, [yet] second to none in humble and enduring scenes of private life." Some key characteristics of Washington's dedicated, selfless service desperately need to be emulated by today's political leaders. ... [Read More]

The Pelosi, Murtha, Reed (MPR) Fighting Vehicle

The Congressional Leadership initiated their new military strategy for ending the war in Iraq today with the roll-out their first new weapon. It was named the MPR Fighting Vehicle in honor of Democrats Pelosi, Murtha and Reed leading the way for reducing military funding of the troops in Iraq. Al Gore championed the effort as a victory for the environment in anticipation of reduction in global warming and in dependency on foreign oil. Alleged sources quoted Mr. Gore as stating This is the most important technological advancement since I invented the Internet.

The Axis of Evil

by Norm Allen (Out of the Norm Show 2/20/07): In high school American History, WWII was not too far in historic distance from where we were. Many of our parents had served in active duty during that war, so we “baby boomers”, were being taught first hand about the horrible things that war brings and how it destroys countries, as its sacrifice in destroying evil ideologies. There were the Allied Forces (the good guys) against the Axis Powers (the bad guys), and a simple definition of what was right and what was wrong. The word “Axis” meant that something was the center of thought and actions “turned” or rotated around that center.

President Bush called North Korea, Iran, and Iraq, an “Axis of Evil”, which needs to be toppled for the sake and safety of the free world. Who could disagree? However, the president didn’t take into consideration the fact that there is another “circle” with just as much hatred, just as much ego, and just as destructive as any country on his list. They are much more dangerous because the “Axis of Evil” that they create, forces a response from foreign enemies. The real “Axis of Evil” that is threatening the lives of Americans not just in the military, but in our daily existence is none other than some elected officials of Congress. Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, and Harry Reid are an "Axis of Evil"

Ramos attorney calls for mistrial

Claims key document withheld from border agents' defense
WorldNetDaily: The prosecutor in the high-profile case that sent border agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean to prison never showed the defense a potentially exculpatory Department of Homeland Security memo. The document, an April 12, 2005, memo by Special Agent Christopher Sanchez, was first made public by WND in a report published Feb. 6. Mary Stillinger, attorney for Compean, confirmed she learned of the memo from the WND story. "This is huge," Stillinger told WND, arguing the government's failure to disclose the document to the defense denied her client his right to a fair trial and establishes the basis for declaring a mistrial . . .

Gilmore says conservatism will help him win GOP nod

By Tyler Whitney - TIMES-DISPATCH staff writer: Former RNC Chairman and former VA Gov. Jim Gilmore said yesterday that he can win the Republican presidential nomination because he brings a consistent conservatism to the race that his opponents do not. "I am the Reagan conservative," Gilmore told the annual meeting of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association, an organization of journalists who cover the state Capitol.

Many covered Gilmore during his tumultuous term as governor, from 1998 to 2002.While he acknowledged he got into the race late, "it is very doable," he said. The states begin nominating delegates to the national convention in 11 months, and many GOP campaigns have raised far more money and have far more extensive organizations than Gilmore does. Gilmore said he would campaign as a tax-cutting governor who carried out his campaign promises and who is an expert on homeland security.

As an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, he led a national homeland security organization for five years. Asked if President Bush would be a liability to Republicans in 2008, Gilmore said Republicans should run on their own record. Asked if he could carry Virginia, Gilmore answered simply, "Yes." He left office unpopular after fighting with fellow Republicans in the Virginia Senate. He also left with mounting budget deficits that some blamed on his campaign promise to repeal the personal-property tax on cars and trucks. The Senate halted that repeal after it cost the state treasury $950 million, about 70 percent of the total repeal.

President's Day - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Today we honor Presidents Day. Follows is an informative piece by David Mark: In "honor" of Presidents Day, actors portraying Abe Lincoln and George Washington will no doubt provide faux endorsements for autos, mattresses and assorted other products. Presidents Day, though, honors all 43 chief executives -- the great, good, average, weak and downright abysmal. After all, even our most obscure presidents, those who are not featured in movies and who rarely come up in the classroom, can claim accomplishments in office (and plenty of dubious deeds as well). It's only fitting to recall a few of the mediocrities, and to remember them along with our favorites. ... [Read More]

The moral retardation of Leftists

by Doug Hagin: We Conservatives often accuse the left of having no moral compass. I am not sure that is quite correct. Everyone has a moral compass, although surely not everyone's operates in the same manner. I think Conservatives have missed their diagnosis of the left. It is not that they have no moral code, it is that they suffer from a new malady, that malady I will call moral retardation.

Liberals, I believe are often misguided and just wrong. Certainly, I would not level a charge towards them labeling them as morally dysfunctional. Liberals, while they generally disagree with Conservatives are not people who loathe America; they are not people who cannot differentiate between right and wrong. Leftists, on the other hand, as I will illustrate, suffer from such a breakdown in basic morality that they must be suffering from a very serious malfunction in their morals. They cannot at once possess a well-developed sense of basic morals and hold the positions they often hold. Allow me to explain my theory . . .

Conclusion: History tells us that Leftists look upon evil and fail to condemn it, time after time. Yet, that same history illustrates clearly that the same Leftists look upon good, and upon those that confront evil, and condemn them. Either they are evil, or they are moral retards.
Doug Hagin (age 38) born in Tampa, FLnow resides in Dallas, TX. House Nonbinding Resolution - Backstabbed US Troops in Iraq

Submitted by an Arkansan who served in Iraq and desired to express his feelings for last weeks House's nonbinding resolution to oppose the troop surge in Iraq:

An Arkansas Lottery: A Bad Bet for Education & Families?

Arkansas Faith & Ethics Council: Click to read: "A Bad Bet for Education & Families?" These research findings were compiled by Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and reveals that the lottery is a sorry economic tool, is a very regressive a tax scheme, and adversely impacts children and families.

Although all 35 state senators and all 100 state representatives need to hear from their constituents on the issue of the lottery, there are two committees critical to this process; they are the Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee and the House State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee. It is imperative that the members of these committees hear from their home folks. If either of these committees refuses to recommend the proposal for the state lottery on to their respective bodies, the senate or the house, the issue is dead.
